Dr. Loetscher often gets asked about the recovery from third molar (wisdom teeth) surgery. In general, it is a pretty quick recovery. Most of our patients experience a little bit of pain and swelling that usually goes away in the next day or so. Dr. Loetscher does a lot of these surgeries on Fridays and most of our patients are ready to go back to school/work on Monday. One the advantages of coming to Dr. Loetscher, he has additional training in anesthesia, and can offer full general anesthesia as done in a hospital setting, rather than just offering deep sedation. This provides a safe airway, for complete patient comfort. Little to none of our patients have complications with dry sockets etc. because Dr. Loetscher takes the extra time to put in sutures which closes the surgery site to prevent food and other bacteria from getting in the site.

I'm 34, and I just had all mine surgically removed.
On day 1, pain was 10/10 about 2 hours after surgery. I was prescribed Vicodin, and I definitely needed it. Pain was 5/10 after the Vicodin fully kicked in. About 9 hours later, pain was about 8/10, so I took another Vicodin, and the pain was only 3/10 while swallowing. My face was very swollen the first day, but the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th days were the most swollen. I discontinued the Vicodin the evening of day 2 and just alternated with 500 mg Tylenol and 200-400 mg ibuprofen about every 4 hours. That was enough to keep the pain down to 3/10. I discontinued pain relievers by day 4. On day 5, the bulk of the swelling went down, and I could open my jaw a little more. Previously, eating involved getting food all over my lips, but by day 5, I could open enough to avoid the mess.
I'm now on day 10. I'm still on soft foods, but the pain is only 2/10. I cannot really eat sandwiches or pizza, unless I want to hurt my jaw and risk the sites getting food in them. The only way I can effectively eat bread is by crumbling it and soaking it in water. I'm eating things like mashed bananas, mashed avocado, mashed potatoes, puréed soups, soft noodle foods, juices, and GoMacro bars dissolved in boiling water. My jaw and the sites are still sore, but I can tell it's continuing to get better.
The top of my tongue has been numb on the right side since the surgery, so I have some nerve damage. Around days 6-8, my tongue also hurt very badly intermittently. My tongue pain seems to have gone away now, but the numbness is still present, although it seems to be lessened. I'm hoping this means my nerve is healing and the damage will not be permanent like it is in some people.

@@zininzimpongwana2545 I'm on day 32, and my tongue numbness is more minor now. I think it's healing. My sockets are still open somewhat, but all my stitches dissolved and came out. One socket became infected last week, so I'm on antibiotics again. Doc doesn't know if it's the socket itself or the salivary gland that's infected. My jaw was feeling much better before the infection, but it's stiff again; however, the jaw popping I developed seems to be gone. I can eat most foods now except anything too hard and chewy.

@@70628 They will give you pain meds, but be careful with how much you take because all pain meds damage your kidneys and liver to varying extents depending on which ones you take. Vicodin really helped me during the most painful times. If you read what I took above, that should get you through. But you're really young, and you will heal a lot faster and better than I did. You probably won't need as much or for as long. Whatever you do, just don't get dry socket! Good luck!

I’m 22. Had 2 wisdom teeth removed; partial impacted upper, and horizontal impacted lower. Total surgery time was like 10 minutes lol, and I was fully awake.
Day 1 was meh, nothing Ibuprofen couldn’t handle. Mainly just slept.
Day 2 was mainly yogurt, pudding with protein powder, and some protein shakes (plant-based muscle milk or something). Again not much. Just felt like a bruise being pushed constantly.
After day 3, I stopped needing Ibuprofen, and started walking daily again.
On day 6 currently, and back to lifting weights again. I’m putting HIIT off for a bit longer. But I feel like a million bucks.

I’m 22 too and I’m having my upper wisdom teeth removed next week, I thought a lot about my protein input since I’m starting the gym and don’t want to lose any gains/weight. I’m glad your process went by nice and quickly, hopefully mine is the same brother.

I had all 4 of mine yanked at the same time when I was 25. I was prescribed pain meds and ended up not needing them. However, my face did get very swollen for a few days. Was fully back to normal after 2 weeks.
