Excelente video. Ambos estao a fazer um espectaculo, a vossa energia, as gargalhadas. Emilia foi uma estrela brilhante neste video com o seu humor e energia e, claro, a sua doce conversa e apoio a Joan. Beijinhos, 😘
I did this Levada during the summer. And I didn't want to continue at the exact same part you didn't want to go on. I also have vertigo and when the Levada got narrower without any type of fence, with the mountain walls almost pushing you towards the cliff... I said HELL NO. We spent some time sitting at the old bridge with feet on the levada and just soaking up the sun :)
There are lots of different levada walks on Madeira. Basically one for everyone. In the valley were i grew up there were two on my side and 4 on the other side of the valley. Only one was a wide path and safe to walk. This one is part of the levada tourist lists. The others were irrigation channels with narrower paths and even with stretchs not meant to be walked on. An in... no path. Remember that the primary goal of the levadas was to carry water, not be a footh path. The footh path was an afterthought in order to do maintenance. It just so happens that some have wide enough paths and have become an attraction. Yes, the ones safe to walk are beyond beautifull. But never underestimate the danger. Those cliffs are high. The vegetation hides how high up you are sometimes. If a part is closed off with signs, it's there for a reason. DO NOT GO FURTHER! You may be risking your life and the lives of who will have to come looking for you. I love our levadas and other walk paths. BUT respect them. Inform yourself before you choose one. TURN BACK if you find yourself way in over your head. It's annoying to read how some tourists decided to go on levada walks during a recent storm that closed off roads due to rain, wind, fallen trees and floods. No local will go to the forests and mountains in such weather. We know better. Oh, and no flip-flops or high heels. Also, don't go alone and inform someone of where you're going.
I remember a Portuguese lady saying to me to be careful if I hike in the Lavadas. Many tourists die there every year. I do not think the tour companies will be so happy with my statement. Happy hiking.
It's really unbelievable how the Portuguese built these levadas, I guess, centuries ago without any modern machinery! You know in my little town the authorities have not been able to organize the proper watering of the city greenery literally for decades now. Btw we're located on the shores of a massive fresh water lake as well as blessed with enormous sustainable supply of groundwater.
I really enjoyed watching this video. We are currently in Madiera and walked this lavada as our very first one, without any knowledge of what we were really getting into. Common sense and self preservation made us turn back at around the same area as you. Good choice to do so as this is very dangerous after the railings end. Better to have a story about turning back than end up a missing person at the bottom somewhere.
WOW! I'm glad you stopped and turned around, 'cause I want to see more videos from you guys. I like your sense of humour, too and that you are so generous showing us your f.ups.
I was petrified watching you both on this levada walk... so scary!!! Glad you both made it without any further injuries. Keep up the awesome video footages!
Another brilliant video. A bit of advice: Seek local knowlege of levadas before walking any. There are books and guides available that rate each levada and walk by how difficult and risky they are. Remember, people have sustained serious injury and have died whilst exploring dangerous walks and levadas in Madeira. Stay classy, stay safe!
We accidentally came across this Levada and was shot scared as also scared of heights. My partner had the most amazing idea and we walked inside the Levada! We went as far as it would let us as a gate was put up to stop people continuing! It was magical but scary! Would never walk on the edge!

Great vlog as always, you guys crack me up! P.S. sorry you got hurt Joen…again…lol
Starting from the urbanized part made all the difference. Walking a levada is actually dangerous and most tourists seem unaware of that. Good you are all safe. Epic Madeira. 🇵🇹🌍
My great grandfather used to walk the levada from our village Papagaio Verde to Curral das Freiras to pray and help fix and maintain things up there. Before there were railings. Madeirans in our older generations were just built different. It is true that tourists die every year doing exactly what you did. Just picking a levada and seeing where it goes. Glad you listened to yourself and turned back. There are now ones suggested for tourists to hike and it is strongly advised to not wander on other ones. There are also water ways that are exact engineering as Levadas in other parts of the world. For example the Acequias in New Mexico, USA. (They came with the Spanish and mixed with the Indigenous ways of doing things there) They are the same in function and similar in design and run the same for each village. People with water rights that have Acequias or Levadas on their property for farming, get water certain days and times in a week. I love the Acequia and Levada culture. It comes from the Iberian peninsula dating back to 700’sAD. It is beautiful and full of ritual. I feel very lucky to have familial ties to Levadas as my family has farmed there for many generations and I have been fortunate to work on maintaining and operating Acequias in New Mexico. Water is life.

Poor Joen...😝😅 But actually it's not the longest Levada in Madeira by a long shot. Levada nova da calheta for example is around 40.6km.
I love you Amelie on those slippery sides of the levadas, but you are afraid of cable cars? I mean, you walk on these slippery areas like you are not afraid. Funny stuff.
Haha 😂 I am not afraid of heights but I am afraid of not having control. So I think that’s why I am afraid of the cable cars and so on. But it is definitely a stupid rational as I am pretty sure the cable car is more safe than me walking on the levadas 😅
Most levadas are being walked on - especially the locals as they can plug and unplug the water for their own land. They have these little metal gates you can remove.
