I think motion activation is a fluid term defined by the way a particular camera implements it. Parking mode is not a common feature on the cheaper cameras I test, but they usually have an option for motion detection, but they power down completely when the ignition is switched off.
I did cover this in the video. You can motion activation and/or remember to unplug the camera and switch it on and off manually or get a switched power socket fitted.
Aside from pulling it apart and sticking a new heat sink on it, there probably isn't much you can do. I don't know much about really hot weather, and its not a spec that gets mentioned. It's best to get feedback from other hot climate users to see what they recommend. I believe the Mini 0801 has been working fine in some hot places.
Anyone considering a dash cam for the first time (like me) and with limited tech savvy (like me) should watch this video. You cover all the main aspects of this new consumer electronic device, one I think will become a standard item in cars of the future, much like seat belts and CD players were in the past. Thank you for a very informative video sprinkled here and there with dry humor that I appreciate so much!
All these annoying people who keep commenting that you sound like James May, I'm just glad you finally proved to them that you are actually Phil Collins. Seriously thanks for all the reviews Phil.
@Mikie C it might be an idea to get a camera with a tripod mount...like the SJCAM M10 then you can buy replacement suction cup tripod mounts. Alternatively you could try adhesive mounts, but the heat might affect the adhesion.
wish camera do you recommend for security , I need one that keeps recording when the car is parked that can record on a 360 degree angle , im pretty sure someone at work is messing with my car , help me please.
A lot of people use Registrator Viewer without any issues. You may want to have a look at the Dashcam Talk website for more info about this software. I think it's supposed to be the best software at the moment. Thank you for the kind words too.
Very very good video. Excellent public speaker with much knowledge of what all of us folks need today. I am beyond happy that I found your channel. Thank you for this much sought after information.
At the moment I'd recommend the Mini 0801 - or the Mobius if you can find a suitable way to mount it. Both are reviewed in my channel and both are small and discrete.
Shorter segments are easier to copy and import into editing software, but on the flip side its more likely that an event will be split across a couple of clips. I usually use 1 min if its an option. Really it just comes down to personal preference.
Hi Matt, thanks so much from someone who read the instructions of my new dash cam and found it so unclear to set up features. Your explanations are clear , concise and to be honest you outshine many many so called reviewers on television. I'm sure u could get a audition on many programmes and media to do this as a side line to your normal job.Well done, from a weet Wales new Subscriber !!
Assuming you are asking about car cams....so I think the bet one I've tested for low light quality is the DR32. I used footage from this camera during the low light segment in this video.
The only car cams that need to come with playback software are the models with GPS. I use a Mac myself and always say if the software for these models is PC only (all the GPS software I've used so far has been). Dashcams with LCD screens are usually self contained devices which don't need a computer. Video files can usually be replayed off an SD card on any computer. DONT PANIC.
I think I've watched all your car cam videos plus others that interested me. I learned a heckuva lot from you. The camera I eventually purchased, it's on the way to me now, is the Mio MiVue 358. It's not one you've reviewed but I saw reviews and video from it elsewhere and with the knowledge I'd gained from your videos, I knew it was the one for me. Thanks, Matt!
For a g-sensor to work like that it needs to save the file currently being recorded...so the camera would have to be recording all the time, even when parked...then we get into issues with battery drain etc. I suppose a g-sensor could potentially switch on a camera from a low-power standby state...but it would take about 5-10 secs for a camera to wake up and start recording...much too long to catch anything happening, and again the camera would have to be powered up.
I tried it with two 808 keyring cams once. It sort of worked, but then I used the Sony MHS-FS3 (3D Bloggie) and realised that I wasn't really interested in recording in 3D after all.
Absolutely excellent. Rarely do I get impressed by a RUclips review / guide, but your video content and delivery is top notch. I will certainly be visiting your website.
I did a video about the DotKlok a couple of years back...I had a look at my channel page and even I can't find it there so I need to do some reorganising. The title of the video was "Hands-on with the DotKlok"
Ray, for some reason I can't respond to your comment directly, so I'll reply here. I think that all of the playback software for the GPS cameras I've tested is Windows only. Non GPS cameras rarely come with any software. The video files created by most cameras can be played on any machine that has the appropriate video playback software. Macs will play .mov and .mp4 files natively.
My compliments, this is an excellent all around overview of dash cams. I'm so glad I found this before going out to look for a dash cam. And don't worry that your review is too long; it is perfect. Thank you!
EXCELLENT video. Probably the best instruction video I've come across. Told me exactly what I needed to know about a dashcam in VERY clear language - well spoken and to the point. I TOTALLY agree with +cvsdigital and I look forward to seeing you on ALL channels replacing the mumbling, too fast speaking nitwits who are plaguing us these days. Many thanks for your video and now I'm going to sit back an watch more (all?) of your videos....
Wow what an informative video! Thank you. I hadn't a clue how dash cams worked - re. recording loops etc - I imagined that I needed to manually delete footage every few hours lol. Now I feel informed and know the type of cam would suit my requirements. Echoing other comments ...you really have a flair for this and I'd happily listen to you for hours talking about gadgets. Thanks again
finding your vids quite useful. Thanks. Pretty much perfect presentation style, information, flow, clarity, production, which makes it pleasurable to watch. Keep it up!
Hi when some one ask me about my car dvr cam I always send them to your page you are the best person when it comes to car dvr's keep up the good work the short time my car dvr has been in my car I have put 23 vid's on here so far and have got 15 more to go on ty for your work in Car Dvr's
@Techmoan I really appreciate your reviews. Very in depth and edited with your own equipment. Also love the Virtual-Boy, block cellphone, and what looks like an edit machine slightly behind you. You sir are made of awesome. Keep it 100.
I enjoyed your common-sense approach to the usefulness of various features. I also think you left out one of the most important one (especially for a newbie-informing introduction), namely the Angle-of-View of the camera. Great reviews, by the way!
I'm not a techy guy and I just love the way you explained everything without making me feel like I usually do with tech stuff (dumb). Some might say your info' video was too long. I would say it was quite thorough. Thank you for your expertise...
Hey dude, thank you so much for this you tube, I was lost, while shopping for dash cams for a fleet of 9, and being a dinsore with this tec stuff, you have just made it so much easier for me. Thanks. Rich
So you are looking for a camera without a battery. These are usually only the really tiny cameras with no room for a battery - most cameras do have batteries. See earlier comments about non-recommendations, but check out my channel for some ideas.
I'm not recommending any cams I've tested at the moment. I liked the performance of the DR32, but since my review the price has increased and people have reported issues. It's too big for me anyway, I'm concerned it could be mistaken for a satnav.
First of all thanks a lot for this excellent production. Very informative and to the point. This video not only made me more competent about dashcams but also gave me pointers as to how to go about presenting a topic. Greetings from Mumbai, India.
What a fantastic bunch of reviews! Informative, entertaining, and honest, good show! I've purchased 3 different cameras based on your recommendations, and knowing in advance their limitations, and you've spot-on with every one. Saved me a ton of time and effort. Hope you'll soon be doing the 808 #26, love the #16.
I love the Vectrex game with the screen overlay back behind you. I have two of these but no overlay and the machines are beat up but still work! I also loved the video that you smashed the Full HD camera with the sledge hammer at the end!!!
I don't actually use one myself - All the models I've tested are unsuitable for my requirements, hence why I can't recommend one. IF I find one that I end up using I'll be sure to mention it on my blog.
I'm a professional cameraman and I'm sure you've already been told this.....but you should be on TV. You are more natural and talented at presenting than 'some' of the presenters I've worked with ....who were doing it for a living and were getting paid well for their time. Are you using auto cue on this video?....I suspect you aren't....it's all presented from your memory? Either way, I think it's time you got aired professionally on broadcast channels.
cvsdigital Yes it's all ad-libbed but there are a heck of a lot of failed attempts before I get something that works. I think my technique would probably drive programme makers crazy. Thanks for the compliments, it always a much needed ego boost to hear things like this.
Very professional, clear and informative. I confident that when the time comes for me to purchase my first Car Camera, I won't be totally disappointed in my choice. Look forward to your reviews. Thank You.
Matt You have done it yet again. Truly a professional presentation with crystal clarity and understanding Well Done. Instead of Techmoan you should be called TECHGURU or TECH PUNDIT....Once again many thanks for your review. Keep up the good work.
My camera doesn't have mic-in. I will upgrade it at some point in the future, but I haven't found a camera with a mic socket that also meets all my other long list of requirements yet. This video isn't really aimed at subscribers...I'd imagine most subscribers already know this info...but the people watching this a couple of months down the line won't know that my audio normally sounds better than this.
Awesome! Do more videos of that kind! It's really informative and way better than those lame explanations of other RUclipsrs, and it gives a good variety to your channel.
Thank you for this and all the other videos. Very informative. After researching many cameras to use in my car, one of your videos made my decision; today I ordered the Mobius. Thanks again.
good point! I live in Los Angeles where the sunlight is simply brutal. So far I had no camera (I have tried a few) fail because of heat, but I assume they will age quicker. The same is probably true for extremely low temperatures. I'm not really concerned, though. The average price is around $100 and every year a newer, better camera is out and I replace my old one anyway. So I'm not really concerned with long term durability.
I don't really recommend them - there are so many things that come down to personal preference, two or one camera, gps, tiny and screenless or large with an LCD screen ....etc - only you can really decide. It's always an idea to watch my most recent review as these things are improving all the time.
Yes.....but it'll take a loooong time before it ends up as The standard. MJPEG is probably about 20 years old now and people are still using it in the cheaper cameras.
One of the best informative videos ever very good explenations you have make a perfect job to tis video i think i don't have any questions after this video anymore and finaly i suggest to all of you first see this video is important and then look for a dashcam or else don't start to look for dashcams is very important to see this video first and sorry for my English i am not a British.
That was absolutely brilliant! I'd heard about these in-car cameras, seen videos of what they capture etc, but had a few questions about them which this video answered. Very professional well presented video too - thanks very much.
I'm not really interested in the product nor do I usually comment but I just wanted to say that your reviews are absolutely fantastic!? Most attractive offer.
Hopefully this video will still be relevant in a couple of years time, that would make the time I spent on this one worthwhile.
Confirmed, it still holds up as a nicely informative briefing on the topic.
I think motion activation is a fluid term defined by the way a particular camera implements it. Parking mode is not a common feature on the cheaper cameras I test, but they usually have an option for motion detection, but they power down completely when the ignition is switched off.
I'm about to buy a dash-cam for my newly-qualified daughter. This video has answered all my questions.
Many thanks.

Yes. There are combined Sat Nav, Dashcam and rearview mirrors on eBay.

Nixie Clocks don't often have models or names. The board and case were made by an ebayer in HK in 2006 and the IN18 tubes came from the Ukraine.

This is so very helpful its nice to see someone who knows what they are talking about, very rare.
Im getting one for my father, for this years Christmas. This video actually helped A LOT with picking a decent one! Thank you for this.

Thank you for making this video. It answers all of my questions. You do good work and are providing a service to your viewers.
As noted via comments - clear and well presented information. Thank-you for the time you put in to this.
Great introductory video to car dashcams. Anyone who wants to learn about car dashcams should watch this.
Brilliant video by a natural teacher.....a true professional.
very clear very layman terms excellent vidio thanks
Only you can decide this based on what features are important to you. GPS, LCD screen, size..... etc etc.
Yes - those are action cameras rather than car cams. The GoPro3 action cam has loop - but not auto start/stop.
I mention in the video that All Car Cams have Loop and Auto On/Off. That's what makes them car cams.
Best low light - probably the DR32.
I'm not a techy guy and I just love the way you explained everything without making me feel like I usually do with tech stuff (dumb). Some might say your info' video was too long. I would say it was quite thorough. Thank you for your expertise...
I haven't got a suggestion for that one. - I have only tested a tiny fraction of the available car cameras.
Hey dude, thank you so much for this you tube, I was lost, while shopping for dash cams for a fleet of 9, and being a dinsore with this tec stuff, you have just made it so much easier for me. Thanks. Rich
It is one of the retro phones. It would be better with an LED display...but it's still fun.
I will be doing the #26 in a few weeks.
Love the vintage video games on the shelf! Quite a collection of some great consoles!
I know...but it's a heck of a lot simpler to say that they are deleted....this was a beginners guide.

I haven't, but I don't usually test the cams for more than a couple of weeks and don't leave them in a parked car.
I am a beginner in dash camera and this video was relevant . These days everyone needs to prove something happened . Thank you .
Very good explanation of the ins & outs of the dash-cams. They can be a valuable tool
for verifying just what happened in an accident..

Eaton Moore Cox How many cox did you eat today?
As a first time buyer of a dash cam I found this video very informative. Thank you.
Thank you I'm a complete learner with a dashcam. So clear and understandable - no jargon. Thank you, now to roadtest.
Very professional, clear and informative. I confident that when the time comes for me to purchase my first Car Camera, I won't be totally disappointed in my choice. Look forward to your reviews. Thank You.
thank you for that, it was just what I needed.

Thanks Paul. Looks like you're getting plenty of material.
You can...formatting is just quicker and you don't have to remove the card from the camera. I also wanted the overlaid title in the video to be brief.
Thank you for this and all the other videos. Very informative. After researching many cameras to use in my car, one of your videos made my decision; today I ordered the Mobius. Thanks again.
Gave great advise and informed me of features i didnt know i had and weather i really needed to use them! Thankyou very much

A camera like that is unlikely to allow a firmware update. There are a lot of bad dashcams out there - I've bought a few myself.
I don't really recommend them - there are so many things that come down to personal preference, two or one camera, gps, tiny and screenless or large with an LCD screen ....etc - only you can really decide. That was absolutely brilliant! I'd heard about these in-car cameras, seen videos of what they capture etc, but had a few questions about them which this video answered. Very professional well presented video too - thanks very much.
A list of my recommended cameras is on my blog.
this is the best clip of this topic i have come across. excellent stuff.
How could 113 people rate this video as bad? Video is brilliant.
Derek Scott , for those 113 people, this may be too much information in a single video clip
Welcome back! Hope you are feeling better.
Another great simple to understand and informative video, thanks.
9 years ago Techmoan was young.
Great video....its like an Aladdins cave in the back ground, great collection.
Good video, easy to understand, plenty of information provided. Thanks for the pointers.
Thanks. I wanted something interesting for people to look at.
Good advice, tips etc for ppl like me who not that technical. Subscribed. Thanks Techmoan.
I'm not really interested in the product nor do I usually comment but I just wanted to say that your reviews are absolutely fantastic!? Most attractive offer.
Excellently informative, as ever. So for the moment ... thanks for posting.
