I have both an 0803 and 0806. Both have worked flawlessly since hardwired and I would recommend them to anyone.
BTW, my 0806 came with the four tiny little screws to attach the wedge shims to the GPS module, yours must have been packed on a bad day! Another 'easy to watch and understand' review, cheers.

FYI to get out of the "preview" video mode, hold down the bottom (down) button for 2 seconds to get to the "preview" photo mode, then hold down another 2 seconds to exit back to live-view mode.

After a few weeks in the hot Los Angeles summer I can say this camera definitely has no heat issues and thus far is 100% reliable. It was also super easy to install as it fits in the same mount of the older versions.

I have an 806 and have been very happy with it. I also live in the Chorley in Lancs area and am sure I recognise where some of the footage was made!
Thanks for a great review, BTW.

I fitted a polarizing filter to my G1WH, not as easy to do but made a huge difference, I love it. Much more vibrant colours and almost no annoying reflections.

Mine has just stopped turning on, after a long period of inactivity in the car, due to the power cable developing a fault. Don’t know if the internal battery units die if they completely run flat, but all I’m getting is a red light to indicate charging. I’ve tried holding the power on button for 30 seconds and also charging it for hours, no joy sadly.
Literally one of the most useful tools I’ve ever owned. It saved me once when a 80 yr old came up behind me when I was stopped at a pedestrian crossing. He had a dog on the passenger seat, which I believe he was talking to, just before rear ending me at 30mph. He fled the scene, i gave chase, ending with him trying to fight me, saying that I was stopped at a green light, so it was ok for him to have hit me and it was all my fault. This camera was used by the Police, to show him the clearly red traffic light and his leaving the scene and trying to assault me and knocking my phone out of my hand. He claimed that I had dragged him out of the car, whereas actually his first words were, “i’ll get out of this car and smash your face in”, or words to that effect. His relative worked for the police and a pc was round almost right after I had returned home. If it were not for this amazing camera, I suspect that they would have believed his fabrications, due to his age, despite him having a chequered history as a local trouble maker when he was young. Thanks to this review, I ended up buying one on Ebay and it literally saved me, thanks Techmoan.💪💪💪🤣🤣🤣♥️

Nice to see a review of it, still using an 0803 which has worked fine (Hdmi port gets hot like everyone else's when used for longer than an hour). Only problem I have had with most dashcams is when in weather like this the glue melts on the mount. I would advise not to have them mounted especially in this weather we are having.

  • @TwoPlusTwoEqualsFive32
    @TwoPlusTwoEqualsFive32 9 лет назад

I've always enjoyed these minicams, for both cost and usability. The 0803 I think was my first and it is still working to this day, I got the 0803 when it first came out and it's working just fine also. The only issues I have ever had was sometimes they sag in their mounts, but a little modification and you can fix that no problem.
For their cost they are exceptional i have yet to send any back for RMA.

I have had this for about 3 months now and it has been working perfectly. I was actually surprised by the audio quality, it was really excellent and sounded a lot better than that recorded in the review. I have heard of issues with it auto switching between cards when recording. Overall though it seems to be an excellent camera which has been installed so it can barely be seen. Just as well after having to return two 0805s due to focus issues straight out of the box.

Ian Leigh The sound in my video will be affected by my soft top car - the interior is noisier than a standard car - I suppose this makes it a good test as I'm completely unintelligible on some cameras.

    Excellent review as always.
You were talking about using a voltage cut-off system if the mini 0806 was used when parking in Motion-Detection mode. Obviously that's a safe and sensible way to go, but I was thinking about using a separate battery to power the 0806 and wondering about isolation when I remembered the old electrical engineering adage about not reinventing the wheel.
I probably won't do this myself but how about using a USB External Portable Battery unit, the ones sold to recharge your phone away from mains electricity. You would power the battery pack from the ACC socket and then power the 0806 from that. Those battery packs are small but for the size of a small book can have 20000 mAh or more capacity. It wouldn't flatten the vehicle's battery (as it would be powered from the ACC socket) and would last for a fair time with the vehicle not running. And the battery pack would recharge when the vehicle was running. Obviously you'd have to check that the battery pack gave an output when it was charging.

@Rob T (your comment has replies switched off) - yes I use a dual USB flush mounted 12V power adaptor - into which I have a USB right angle male to female short dongle cable adaptor and into this I plug a 2.5m USB A to Micro B cable. I never use the supplied power adaptor with any camera - they wouldn't fit in my car and are usually cheaply made and in some cases unsafe. I bought this camera based on your review. I've had some trouble and considering trashing it. My first mistake was buying two cheap sim cards. After that I bought a good sim card and solve most of the problems. However I have to use a lower resolution to keep the camera from freezing. The other issue is only the B sim slot works. The camera won't automatically switch from A to B sim cards. They have a web site for software patches that hasn't been updated in many months. Many users have the same issues. I wouldn't recommend this camera until they debug the firmware. Thx

Again another very well done informative video. I noticed that they have gone back to displaying the information at the top left corner same as it was on the 0801 which is not an ideal place for white text to appear (against the bright sky), it would have been better if they kept it on the bottom right as they did on the 0803.

Regarding all dash-cams. If using a power source that switches on/off with the ignition, very convenient. However, if you are involved in a collision or some other incident and you get out of the car, most people would switch off and remove the key. In doing so, evidence could be lost - identity of the driver, any other passengers etc.
Although more inconvenient, simply using a plug in/pull out type of 12v supply (cigarette lighter) means that recording continues. Just don't forget to pull out overnight!

    • @Techmoan
      @Techmoan  9 лет назад

Michael Thwaite My Mini keeps the power to the 12V power supplied as long as the key is inside the car (even if the engine is turned off). the power is disconnected approx 5 mins after locking the car. There are a lot of different ways cars can handle power to the 12V accessory socket.

  • @sludgeguts

The dual USB can be great if you are on a journey where something important happens & you don't want to risk losing the footage. Pull the relevant card & keep it safe! (OK, so you can lock a file - but you never know, sod's law dictates that the cam will 'fritz' & damage the cards!
As for the GPS, If the cops wanted to push it, their equipment would surely have to have some form of regular test? I've got GPS on my phone & satnav & have sometimes noticed that the displayed speeds don't always correlate - I've seen me doing 80 in a vehicle that is physically limited to 62mph. And whilst out walking along a local canal (Bucks), my GPS had me sat 5 miles off the coast of Wales!
BTW, I found your explanation of why you preferred the particular setting to be informative.

As a result of this review I bought one approximately 18 months ago. I have had endless problems with it not contacting with the mount and have tried two mounts todate. My latest problem is that I cannot access the menu easily and though I have rotated my image the written information display remains upside down. I have tried several times to correct it but as previously stated cannot always get into the menue. My other two vehicles are fitted with a Nextbase 402G and I am more than happy with them.

I purchased three (3) Mini 0806 Dash Cam's from Amazon and all three (3) of them are malfunctioning within a month or so after using them. All (3) of them will turn themselves OFF after running for about 15 minutes or so. And one (1) of them will flicker ON & OFF recording absolutely nothing. They all worked fine for the first month or so. Then only a month or two after having them, they will work fine for about 15 minutes then when I look up at the camera to see if it's still on and recording, I notice that it’s OFF again. I bought one for my son, one for my daughter, and one for myself and we’re all having the same problems. I’ve checked some blogs online and found that other people are having the same problems. Other bloggers are advising me to check to make sure I don’t have the Motion Detector ON, and I don’t. I have left all the settings at factory default settings when I got it. The only thing I set was the time Zone. I LOVE this camera, the best quality video (day & night) I've seen yet. But this problem sucks. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Yes, youtube compression leaves a lot of detail out, especially when moving.
pause at 8:02. the road looks uniform grey, except for what looks like artifacts here and there. But actually, the aritifacts are the real road texture and are the remnants of what youtube compression leaves. I watched the downloaded version and the road is indeed very textured like that.

I've had one of these for about four years and it's worked great. However it recently started to have problems formatting the SD Card and started turning on and off randomly when out on the road. Turns out the Lithium Polymer (LiPo) battery has failed which means it can't shut down properly when the vehicle power is turned off. The real risk is the battery case will swell as the battery starts to fail and if left unresolved, could potentially crack the PCB or the case. It's not to difficult to get the camera apart and you can find replacement CX402030, 200mAh, 3.7V batteries on various online websites. I have written a "How To" guide which may be helpful for anyone with a dead or dying Mini 0806 -
How To: Dash Cam LiPo Battery Replacement
    www.ttforum.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?f=19&t=2000047
The Mini 0806 also has an alarm that will go off when the SD format fails. It took me by surprise as I didn't know it had this feature. You can hear what it sound like here -

seeing all these dashcam videos of the roads in your area, i'd imagine it would be a nightmare if you were disabled or paralyzed and bound to a wheelchair and attempting to get around town in the residential looking areas. So many cars/vans parked up blocking the sidewalk, that's if there is any sidewalk at all in some of the shots, or sidewalks with lots of uneven bits/gaps at the seams.

Looks like this might be a good replacement for my 0801 I have been using since March of last year. I live in Texas and as most know it gets pretty hot here, I do remove the camera from dock if I am going to be parked for a while. Its been having a few issues with not always starting the recording when I start my car. Also I can not have it turn off the screen or it will turn it self off ( it is not set to ).
I also been thinking more about getting the K1S since it is dual camera.

  • @tradersato
    @tradersato 9 лет назад

After not getting any real help from the seller of my 0803 due to its overheating I disassembled it and looked at the internals to see just why it had become a radiator instead of a dash cam. Upon inspection of the battery it was clear that the battery perhaps due to poor quality, it had overheated quite a bit in the charge/discharge cycles and it was evident that it had warped from the heat it generated. The dash cam is very good but unfortunately the fact that it uses a battery and a cheap one at that, gives it a lethal Achilles heel. No amount of venting will compensate for a bad battery. These cameras should have a capacitor instead...

I've had about 3 Mini 0804's melt in the summer. This is the only one that hasn't melted yet. They need to make this model with a capacitor and not a battery.

Techmoan You talked about PC software within this video.
I am a Linux user and most of the software you mentioned (apart from VLC) are Microsoft Windows / MacOS based software, if you are going to start suggesting software for a workstation, please stop using generic terms such as 'PC' and specify what operating systems these applications / codecs are able to be installed on.
I understand that there will be alternative software for other operating systems (unless the software has been compiled for the alternative OS, as an example VLC has been compiled for both Linux, Windows and MacOS).
Please remember that not all 'PC' users have (or want) Microsoft / Apple products installed on their workstations.
Apart from this small issue, I enjoyed this review.

Mark Edworthy As I'm sure you know - the commonly used terminology for a Windows PC is a 'PC' - You may recall the "I'm a Mac and I'm a PC" Apple adverts from a few years ago. Both a Mac and a Windows computer are Personal Computers - "PC's", however when I mention a PC most people will think *Windows* not Mac, not Linux, not Chrome OS, BeOS, OS2, NeXTSTEP - they think *Windows*, the fact that you don't, would put you in a very small minority. However even you understand I meant Windows, because otherwise you wouldn't have even brought this up....so even you aren't in the (imaginary) minority that doesn't understand that PC now commonly refers to a Windows PC. I'm also certain that *everyone* watching this video understood that the Windows Registrator Viewer software (that I explained was just for Windows verbally and by using an on-screen banner - at 22:20 ) only worked on Windows PCs. There are plenty of more serious things that you could worry about - wars, terrorists, starvation, disease, illness, death - but the fact that the term PC might at one point have meant Personal Computer but now more often refers to a Windows Personal Computer is not something to trouble yourself (or others) (including me) with.

Question ... in order to conceal the fact that you have a dashcam, would it be feasable o have a say 2-3" graded shaded top to the windscreen. Like a graduated sun visor? That would help conceal the camera, help with sunshine and not really obstruct vision ???

To be fair, i have mine mounting right behind my rear View Mirror
(One thing i found is that if you place it right at the top of the Windscreen, the Cam is then outside of the wiper sweep and would be no good in heavy rain)
And once youi look at my Windscreen, its hard to make out as it black on black against the mirror

Hello Techmoan, love your reviews, I find the mini 0806 dashcam awesome, the only thing pushing me back is its battery. Would it be possible to replace it for a capacitor or simply remove its battery so I could install it permanently in my car? Thanks for your help!

can you please review the Blackvue DR650GW? It has built-in wifi, and being able to instantly transfer video from the dashcam to a smartphone without removing a SD card or removing the dashcam would be extremely useful in case of an accident, you can show the police what happened immediately when they arrive.

    Hi Techmoan,
Thanks heaps for all your work you put in, its absolutely outstanding!
I have a question about this Dash Cam. Does the EIS have much affect? as I am considering purchasing one for my drone.
I would also prefer a Gyro Assisted EIS Camera. Would you be able to recommend a Cam with these features for under $150AU?
    Cheers mate

I find the viewing software that comes with the camera to be well below-par, and I am using Registrator Viewer off the web.
I also had a LOT of rattling from the mount. I think that's a real issue with this camera, as I have noticed it in other people's videos too, on RUclips. I made a little wooden wedge to jam between the camera and the windscreen, right next to the mount where it can't get in the way of the vision, and that has fixed it. Of course, it falls out every time I remove the camera. I coloured the wedge black (with a marker pen) so that it wouldn't show through the windscreen and attract unwanted attention.

Had one of these for 5 years, recently it's started to have a sort of dodgy connection with the mount so I don't turn it on anymore as I can hear it starting up repeatedly. Hoping I may be able to sort the pogo pins that connect to the mount.

I hope it is more reliable than the .. 0803.. My 1st quit after a week or two of use. The second worked good for about a year now it shuts itself off after 20 to 30 seconds. Possibly the internal battery is toast...

I installed this on a 2018 Ford f150. The back cam when plugged into the front cam, causes a rf interference with fords tire pressure monitor system, tpms. The fix is 2 ferrite cores attached where the back cam cord goes into the front cam. No shielding, so rf problems.
