  • An introduction to car cameras. [CLICK SHOW MORE]
    In this video I explain why many people have decided to fit dash-cams in their cars and show how they work. This is a beginners guide, so there is no unnecessary jargon - If you are looking at getting your first car camera this is a good place to start.
    This video features the Asus Reco Classic Car Camera. Available here; amzn.to/1Nkjszr (Link goes to Amazon UK)
    Sample Clips from the Reco Classic can be downloaded from here: pc.cd/G1TrtalK
    A list of my recommended dash cams can be found here: www.techmoan.com/what-is-the-b...
    NOTE - ASUS DID NOT PAY FOR THIS VIDEO. I made it for them on the proviso that I could also use it on the channel. My hope was that Asus would feature it in a way that would get a bit more exposure for this channel and drive some traffic. It probably won't happen, but you don't know unless you try.

    There should be cars with built-in dashcams.

    • @RustyTube
      @RustyTube 8 лет назад +22

      +Brunis Kibilds Yes, with several of them. One to show what is happening in front of the car, one showing what is happening behind the car, one showing what is happening inside the car. And, ideally the outside cams should be in 3D. So, if you hit another car or just have an accident, the front view gives you evidence, if another car bumps into you, the back view gives you evidence. And if someone steals your car, the inside video will give you evidence. All those videos should be synchronized in time, so you could show to the judge what you were doing while you had an accident or someone bumped into you from behind.
      The built-in cams should start recording the moment the key is in the ignition and keep recording until it is out again. The micro-SD cards could/should be located somewhere under a key, so a thief could not get to it.

      +RichardDJLilD not to mention how fast dashcam tech is improving. the newest corvette offers a several-thousand-dollar option for a builtin dashcam (for recording at the track). while it's nice that it also includes a lot of telemetry, the actual video is only 720p. and it's a pretty poor quality 720p at that. meanwhile you can spend $50 and get a true 1080p camera and install it yourself.

    I absolutely believe a dashcam is essential for all drivers. Just this evening, I was driving in San Francisco on my way home. I came upon a stalled car in an intersection, drove around it, and went on my merry way. Just down the street from my house, I was pulled over by the local PD (30 miles away from SF!) and told my car had been ID'd and I was wanted for a hit and run! Thankfully I had my dashcam and was able to show him I didn't hit a thing. My $60 SJ4000 was the difference between a quick chat with an officer and a long night at the police station. Money well spent!
    Don't put yourself at risk. Get a frickin' dashcam.

      I’m watching this because I fell victim to a lying wicked truck driver few days ago. He reversed into my car breaking my headlight, front grill and damaged my bonnet. Came out and said he’s sorry but he didn’t see me. I felt good that he admitted he was wrong, only to call the police and he then told the officer that he was parked and I ran into the back of his truck. I could not believe my ears. I will definitely get a dash cam asap.

    I'm a big believer in dashcams being in automobiles for insurance reasons. They can save you a lot of headaches down the road as you have clearly shown in this presentation. I got the Koonlung K1S dual camera system (based on your review of it, and thank you for that) and had no issues with it, though the battery didn't survive the hot Missouri summer all that well. I think this tutorial nails it down for people who are hesitant on buying one. It's not a purchase, it's an investment, one that could pay dividends in the end. Thank you again.

    I appreciate that you re-posted it, as it provides great value for dash-cam beginners. Have you considered doing more general guides like this for other tech products? I think your biggest advantage is that you can explain complicated things in a very simple way, which proves you understand how product works, at the same time its good for newbies to have videos like this.

    as a chinese, i have access to basily every dashcam in the world (taobao.com) lol, almost 7 out of 10 dashcam ppl bought came with a menu that has chinese language init xD.

      +Liangshi Xu i won't argue that Mat (Techmoan) has an excellent channel here and does top notch reviews, but there are others out there as well (myself included) who review dashcams. Not to mention forums/sites such as DashCamTalk.com which are a wealth of information. On DCT, some of the manufacturers and retailers actively participate in the forums and not only do they support their products, they actually listen to users for ideas to improve their products.

    The Reco Classic looks to be a nice, full featured cam but I couldn't get over how long it is with its suction mount. I can see that as being a problem in some cars. With so many cars featuring info-tainment screens nowadays I think a small cam, such as the Mobius, that can connect to that screen would be a plus. It cuts the cost and size of the cam but also would enable playback or monitoring from the car itself.

    The first dashcam mount; the one with the ADHESIVE, is one for mounting the dashcam on the DASH of the car. Because in some countries it is illegal to mount anything onto the glass itself. So in those places you mount it onto the dash of the car itself, that is what I do in my car. And since the dashcam will then be upside down, you have to enter settings and have the recorded image 'inverted'.

    I know someone who bought a dash cam with built-in GPS etc. The day they were trying it out, they were driving along a bend in the road, when a truck came around, in the opposite direction, about 1/3 into the lane they were in. Just as well they were alert enough to move in time or they may have been relying on their dash cam for evidence.

    I use to be an automotive insurance appraisers for damaged autos for 21 years. These dash cams if they were in use when I was appraising would cleared up many dispute claims I had. And I had LOTS of dispute claims on liability. Lane changing accidents were a big problem. A dash cam would show you were established in your lane if someone says you turned into their lane causing a side swipe.

    Thank you, that was helpful. QUESTION: I only want to use my dashcam to record day trips (for the length of time that my card will allow). Do I need to format each time (after I've transferred the info to my computer)? How long does it take to format? Do I need to erase the card first? I'm an elderly amateur. Bought a simple (verrrrrrry cheap) All Ride dashcam and because I have no cigarette lighter, was hoping to use the rechargeable battery as my source of power. How long does this last? Do you know? I don't want to overwrite my daytrip, but fill the card with enough video so as to transfer it to my computer. How can I avoid overwriting? How do I activate the camera? Do I need to set the motion detector each time I want to use the video? Will my card let me know when it's full before overwriting? Greetings from The Netherlands.🚗

    The next big dash cam in my opinion should be an 8 way camera (front, rear, front driver and passenger side windows and rear driver and passenger side windows), with an external hard drive (an SSD would be alot better) rather than memory card slot(s) but definitely not a USB. That would be a nightmare due to potential damage in the boot of the vehicle.
    The side windows and rear camera's should be super mini and extremely descreet and the front one shouldn't be too big either (no bigger than the K1S system).
    All of these connected to 1, maybe 2 control units (like the K1S) and the external hard drive (like that of a CCTV system, a hard drive or an SSD and should easily be able to be put away in the boot of the vehicle. Also, a touch screen of around 7 inch and a remote control should be included in the package specific to this system (with user controls, emergency button, bluetooth, maybe even a built in premium sat nav - that's probably pushing it though but who knows).
    Finally,
    (i) It needs to record in 1080P (preferably all round) with excellent day and low light recording capabilities
    (ii) There needs to be a capacitor(s) rather than a battery/ batteries
    (iii) There needs to be plenty of cable and the entire system needs to be designed in a manner to which it can be installed and left in the vehicle with total descreetness but also, removing this system from the vehicle shouldn't be a difficult task for those who want to change vehicle's, say every 2 or 3 years like I do.
    Cost of the entire system (including an external hard drive, a screen and remote control) should be in the region of around:
    £500 (GBP)
    €700 (Euro)
    $750 (USD)
    $1,100 (AUD)
    Thanks for the upload as always ☺

      So Cameras on the side windows...................
      So what happens to the Cams then when the windows are opened?
      If Cams are stuck to the glass then when the windows go down - Cams get stuck.
      And the calbes to the Cams - you would have to keep the power cables loose so they dont pull
      So i guess thats the reason why this 'idea' does not exist

    Neat thing is, if you carry around an android phone that supports it, you can have a otg cable. Plug the dashcam up to your phone, and easily show someone what went on very quickly. Here in America where most speed radars are so inaccurate, I'd highly recommend getting one with a gps speed recording option.

    Been following you for quite awhile and now have a question for you?
    I am looking for a dash cam that can be hooked up directly to the 12v power supply on the car that will switch on and off with the ignition key. Let me explain... I would like the camera to mount on the rear of the rear view mirror and have all the recording done from a device under the dash. My reason for this is the electronics on my 2015 buick already has a large plastic housing with many connections and there is really no where a dash cam can be mounted safely without blocking someones view including the driver! Any suggestions would be appreciated. I really think this is the direction dash cams should be going in..Thanks for your many reviews.

    hi Techmoan,
    i like the full shot of you in the beginig . makes it more interactive, to the viewer.
    and is it just only a thing that i'm seeing but is the audio at the end part ( 12:14 ) slight off, not compleet in sync ?
    oh and keep making video's i do like them pretty much
    (yes i did subscribe a long time a go ;) )

      +Roy engineer yes it went out of sync at the end on RUclips. The original video file is fine.

    I'm not sure if you've mentioned this in any of your videos, apologies if you have, but a feature I find extremely handy these days is one I now have with my gopro hero 4 silver (I assume all the latest gopro cameras have) is being able to highlight a point in the video at the press of a button while recording aka HiLight Tagging.
    That has saved me so much hassle when finding the clips I need. I wonder if this feature is on any of the budget models that you review? Or if you think it will be included?
    edit... turns out it was introduced almost a year to the date!

      +Damian Brown dashcams usually have an emergency button that moves the file currently being recorded to a safe place on the SD card that won't be overwritten.

    • @DamianBrown
      @DamianBrown 8 лет назад

      That would make sense. Seems like a vital feature to me. I don't fancy what I used to do, going through minutes of footage, maybe even an hour or two, to find a 5 second clip

    Are there any cameras that upload the video automatically (and/or constantly) to a secure online storage app?

  • @TheKnightsShield

    With a few years experience with dashcams, have you got a clear idea as to what cameras can and can't be used as a dashcam from an insurance and or legal stand point? The reason I ask that, is what happens if you decide that you want to install a computer in your car and then install a hidden camera system? Are these official dashcams the only "recognised" systems that can help you get discounts on your insurance?
    Great channel by the way. I'm in the UK also and have been watching for a while now. All these small cameras you review look pretty awesome and it's nice to get an honest review from someone who actually tests more than one.

    • @Techmoan
      @Techmoan  8 лет назад

      +TheKnightsShield That depends on your insurer - they often have deals with particular manufacturers - however the company I use (Swiftcover) just give a discount if you say you have a camera. I'd imagine that in the event of a claim you couldn't (or wouldn't) provide the video evidence, they'd back-charge whatever discount they gave you.

      +Techmoan Cool, thanks for the reply. I hope you never have to use your footage, unless it's down the pub to impress your mates. ;)

    Hello there - any chance of an update on Dash-Cams? I assume things have moved on a lot! - I have been waiting for the dust to settle on the new ideas from way back when you used to do regular reviews on them, it's been a while and i am ready to dive in!!.. i can of course take a look at Amazon and just go for it, but wondered if you had any updates or something in the pipeline - thank you! :0

    I'm glad to see that someone is paying you for your skills. I really thought that someone from the major broadcasters would have snapped you up by now.
    Your delivery style seems a lot less relaxed than usual. Did you feel a bit more under pressure because you were being paid? If so, I hope you get a lot more experience of it and relaxed about it.

    Strange you need to set the UTC offset based on your location considering by definition the GPS unit should know where you are.

    • @musaran2
      @musaran2 6 лет назад

      To be fair, UTC is much less ambiguous.
      Local time is more relatable, but with daylight saving time or crossing time zone it could hinder the legal proof aspect.

    I wish I had one of these last December. I was stationary waiting to turn onto a main road a woman shot across the traffic cut the corner and smashed into the front drivers side of my car. She lied to her insurance company and said I smashed into her. It was a matter of my word against hers. So angry and annoyed she got away with it. Im getting a dashcam.

    Was that a Vectrex in the background? :D
    I recently installed a dashcam in my car, a G1WHT... the usual cheap Chinese thing for £30, and I believe a variation on one you've already reviewed. The difference is the "W", for wide, as it has a wider field of view.
    I can highly recommend it for anyone looking for a cheap dashcam with excellent image quality, a wide field of view, and good low light performance.

    • @Techmoan
      @Techmoan  8 лет назад

      +Steve Benway (Retro Gaming Collector) I plan (at some point) to revisit the G1W range - perhaps do a comparison between a few models. Yes, it's a Vectrex and there's another one at the other end of the room, next to the Virtual Boy.
