Hailing an Apollo Go robotaxi in Chongqing's Yongchuan district can be a surprising experience. The cars sometimes arrive without anyone behind the wheel! The Straits Times' China correspondent Danson Cheong catches a robotaxi for the first time. READ MORE: str.sg/wzA4

The most science fiction thing about this is that the roads are empty....
actually the most amazing thing is that Elon Musk will be introducing a RoboTaxi like this one, by 2030
40km per hour, on sparsely traffic condition. Its still at experimental stage but a good start.
As far as I know, it's been in operation in an experimental stage for well over 1 year.
But it was required by law to have a driver sitting in the driver's seat.
So this is the 1st city where the government has relaxed the law. But not the 1st city to have autonomous robotaxis.
Driverless cars abide by speed limits.
Just. Wow.
I hope I could test it in Beijing.
so high-tech and convenient as a traveler -> All you do is you download the App, you book the trip, the car based on GPS drives automatically to your location, you look for license plate (maybe with a correct code, you can open the door) -> and they drive you to your destination, and the payment is digital
One drawback is it is taking jobs away from taxi drivers in big cities, which is very sad!
2 years ago auto x robo taxi China have already started driverless taxi
China boleh!!
Where is everybody?
First in the world fully driverless tech. The sensors, the ai and the vehicles are all so futuristic.... Wonder when this will happen anywhere else
US alr did it first. sorry
@@-The-Grim-Reaper- really? Yet they still have drivers. Remember, the ai is there to assist you, lest you end up under a white trailer with your top cleaved off. Guess that makes the Chinese ai that much smarter
Too many sensors used, chances of sensor malfunction is high. Also regular sensors calibration needed. Beside the wireless technogy and electronics need to improve further. Still a distance to true uselful application.
Usually, they use multiple sensors as redundancy i.e. still functioning even if some sensors broke down
F that car lol I trust a real person behind the wheel more
Even if it's a Chinese driver?
@@soupnazikitcheneverett as long as it's not a female driver and a man behind the wheel I'm good lol
Imagine can sent suicide bom inside this driveless car.. Can sent drug using this technology.. Just wonder 😅
Need to add some soundtracks with vulgarities to improve the realism of real driving.
Good Job China
Why would i want a robot taxi??? I want a human taxi.
What if it's cheaper? Humans are expensive.
Bye2 to taxi job! In Singapore tis type of tech make ppl lose job ! A small nation must take small step, not to follow the hype n excitement.
Totally agree......imagine tens of thousands of taxi drivers losing their driving job in such a small city-state as Singapore
Do you really want to drive in Chyna's vehicles? They will crash at any time!
Now even my government (Malaysia 🇲🇾🇲🇾) is wasting money on china infrastructure projects! These houses have no people and will crash at any time
They are wasting taxpayer money and making the rakyat suffer!

The taxi drivers will have to retrain. Find other work. Automation makes our lives better.
soon many people will be jobless
Thanks government ☺️
Endangering your life!!
Maybe in your city, but definitely not in China.
Autonomous robotaxi services have been in service for more than a year in different cities in China.
This is the 1st city to not require a driver sitting in the driver's seat by law. But *NOT* the 1st city to have autonomous robotaxis.
Imagine your business partner want to takeover your business share and the easiest way is to create a fatal car accident. That can be easily done simply by remotely taking over the control of the vehicle.
@@flyinghorse1878 But the whole world is going the same direction.
Automation will eventually spread to the whole world whether we like it or not. It's only a matter of time.
I was waiting for the "but" followed by why China is going to destroy humanity with this technology. Pleasantly surprised ST managed to produce *a* non-colored piece on China. Probably the first time they've done this in years.
They're probably going to add that part in in the next report.
If u can't handle the truth, go back to your Global Times, CCTV, CGTN etc. u have so many options from the same source
Well done China, you are the second country to do it after the US company Waymo.
These autonomous robotaxi services have been in China for well over 1 year now.

Why we need humans now?
Up to now, many major and minor vehicle accidents are caused by human errors. 😁
Give the driverless cars a chance.
More road accidents on the way
