Whether this song is performed as "The Heart is Slow to Learn" or "Our Kind of Love" from ALW's show "The Beautiful Game" or penultimately as "Love Never Dies" from the musical of the same name, what remains true is Andrew Lloyd Webber has written a most exquisite piece of music that has, from this very introductory performance, deeply resonated in my heart and soul. No matter what others think or feel about this music, it has made an indelible mark in my heart and is the single most meaningful, important, and powerfully beautiful piece of music that has forever changed my life. Thank You ALW!
I saw this program on public television. Great performances by all. Yet when Dame Kiri Te Kanawa came on near the finale it was as if the children had sung and now the master is here.
I was trained by Dame Sister Mary Leo who trained our Dame Kiri, Opera was unheard of as an International art in NZ at that time. Our Kiri set the magnificent bench mark, but I'm sure she'd pay huge homage to her training. She is wonderfully special.
They are simply two different kinds of artists. Dame Kiri is one of the greatest singers in the world and set the gold standard for generations to come. Now retired from public performance, she is teaching the next generation of classical singers. Sarah Brightman, though a decent singer, does not have the technical command over her instrument that only comes from years and years of training and hard work that Dame Kiri went through. Could Dame Kiri sing Christine? Yes. Easily. Could Sarah Brightman sing the Marschallin? Not bloody likely......
Sarah does that weird thing with her mouth that makes me think of choir boys made from china. Voice and presentation nowhere near Kiri's level. Apples to oranges.
Glenn Close may have received more rapturous applause at the event, but with this performance Kiri should have left no one in any doubt who is the greatest soprano of the modern era. That last high note in the happy to you shook the cobwebs out of every corner of the auditorium. Breathtaking.
I’m not sure...I was thinking the audience was comprised mainly of fans of musical theater, and were perhaps unappreciative of the brilliance of Kiri Te Kanawa in her field.
Opera singers are oftentimes only popular with classical music fans. I don't get it when some young pre teen girl (a la Charlotte Church or jackie evanchoo) manipulates her instrument to imitate a mature women and the public calls them an 'angel" and goes wild. Here you have Dame Kiri Te Kanawa at the height of her powers and the non classical public doesn't even know who she is. I was once told by a world class singer "Nobody knows me outside of New York.....I went to a store once and used my credit card and the clerk said "you know you have the same name as this really famous singer!"
I think it is the song. Glenn sang a song from a musical she was in, and Kiri's song at that time was one only heard for the first time that night. (Then it was not used for the musical it was intended for) Lyrics were changed for another musical.
1) There is no comparison. Kiri is an opera icon and Glenn is a musical theater icon. 2) Glenn sang a popular song that people know from a show she is known for. Kiri sang a less known song. 3) Kiri sang (greatly at that) and Glenn acted and sang her bit. A "full-on performance". All in all, they both gave smashing performances.
This birthday tribute included many great singers and performers. Then, near the end, Dame Kiri Te Kanawa sang. She did not set the bar, she is the BAR.
now that you say that i only heard that version on the lnd soundtrack and said ''wait...this is the heart is slow to learn but with different lyrics.'' truth be told i love how he encorporated it into THAT musical plus added little musical hints of POTO as well so that fans never forget the age old prequel!
I do not like musicals anymore so I would not know. I just knew it was supposed to be in the sequel and ALW changed his mind. Since I do not listen to ALW music again I would not know. I knew it went into another musical. The one time I heard the song with the new lyrics was at one of the 9/11 benefits/memorials in 2001. I recognized the tune, but the new lyrics were not good.
As a little NZ kid I was absolutely obsessed with this beautiful performance. Then imagine my horror at finding a little gem called Love Never Dies years later.
The video doesn't show the beginning where Kiri walks out, but everyone looks at Kiri respectfully as she walks down....as they should, she is vocal royalty, even if they're not all opera fans.
Sir Andrew L.W. and Dame Kiri Te K… two living legends… could there be a more exquisite combination in the world of music? This beautiful heartfelt rendition - sung on ALWs 50th birthday at the RAH - will be remembered for generations… ! ❤❤
This is the far superior version. I had seen this before I saw the sequel play and I was blown away that he would have changed it from this magnificent version... the official version's lyrics feel almost camp to me by comparison.
This melody was later used in Andrew Lloyd Webber's "Love Never Dies." You can listen to Sierra Boggess sing it. Though this is absolutely the best version of the melody sung.
Have had absolute privilege of seeing Dame Kiri sing in concert 3 times, the last one in my beloved Tassie. No words to describe how magnificent Dame Kiri is. THANK YOU.
Just stumbled upon this wonderful video. Kiri is part of a very small group of "opera" singers that can sell popular music. No hearvy portamento and scooping, just pure dedication to the written note. I can name Eileen Farrell, Eleanor Steber, Helen Traubel, and Dawn Upshaw as discrete members of this special club. Brava Dame Kiri!
And these lyrics which were put together at the very start are not sang in today production .This is superior even to Sierra Boggas version from the musical....
"The Heart Is Slow To Learn" The heart is slow to learn The heart is slow to learn These feelings that I feel Are foolish but they're real I'm wise enough to see This love will never be And each day's like the last, When living in the past I know it's mad and you won't return But then, as I have said, The heart is slow to learn I'll live alone, as I have loved you Why is love cruel? I wish I knew! Say what you will, it doesn't matter Until I die, there's only you Until I die, there's only you The heart is slow to learn, The heart is slow to learn You'd think there'd be a way To shut out yesterday Perhaps if I just thought Of all the times we fought I've tried all that but no There's just no letting go I know it's mad and you won't return But then, as I have said, The heart is slow to learn Why is love cruel? I wish I knew! Say what you will, It doesn't matter Until I die there's only you Until I die there's only you Why is love cruel? I wish I knew! Say what you will It doesn't matter Until I die there's only you Until I die there's only you. The Heart Is Slow to Learn
Our Kiri - we are so proud of her - she captured the World with her stunning voice - I am so amazed at the many Artisans a tiny little country like New Zealand produces.
One year after her divorce! A 30 year marriage.... she looks wonderful and was happy to be singing this for the first time anyone ever sang it. ALW chose her to sing it and I saw a video of her with ALW practicing the song.
I still remember seeing this with my grandparents as a teen and I cried so much. Being obsessed with the phantom... this was such a treat and still is xx stunning
I just wished that she sung Love Never Dies! I know that this was in 1998 but imagine her singing Love Never Dies. With that voice and that heartbreaking lyrics will really be magical!
Dame Kiri Te Kanawa’s performance at Andrew Lloyd Webber’s 50th birthday Gala concert was nothing short of breathtaking. Her voice filled the Royal Albert Hall with grace and elegance, capturing the timeless beauty of Webber’s compositions. Dame Kiri’s artistry brought a sense of grandeur to the celebration, making the night unforgettable for all in attendance. Her vocal spin, throat tilt and tone are just gorgeously produced. The song is very Puccinian. The entire effect is magical and full of yearning.

OMG totally.
Exactly!

The best rendition of this song by any artist and Dame Kiri is not an artist, she is a legend, beautiful....
No one since Tebaldi can attack a high note with such passion and maintain the vocal quality.
Oh, boy. Here we go...
Pure and what singing is supposed to be
She is one and only.
@yortko1
Tebaldi could only sing it if it didn't go above a Bb -- 60/40 she'd be seriously flat if so
😎😎😎
Perfect pitch as usual. And breath control. Now that's a real opera singer!!!
I do prefer Dame Kiri's voice to Sarah Brightman
She sang without drama so the beauty of her voice came through.

@@baritonebynight SB. Too shrill, theatrical, lacks warmth doesn't want to mature gracefully. That's showbiz!
...that moment when you applaud with standing ovations although you're just watching in your living room at home....😊
Her voice is so powerful, so pure. I literally feel myself going into another world as she sings.
Amen.
Glenn Close may have received more rapturous applause at the event, but with this performance Kiri should have left no one in any doubt who is the greatest soprano of the modern era. That last high note in the happy to you shook the cobwebs out of every corner of the auditorium. Breathtaking.
I don’t think people were expecting Glenn to be that good, though, whereas they knew Kiri is an opera star.
I’m not sure...I was thinking the audience was comprised mainly of fans of musical theater, and were perhaps unappreciative of the brilliance of Kiri Te Kanawa in her field.

I could listen to Kiri singing this wonderful classic all day.
Magnificent!!!!!
Excellent! Nobody could sing this song so beautiful other than Kiri. A great performer either in pop or opera. Thank you.

Before Love Never Dies, there was the Heart Is Slow to Learn. Brava!
Billy Lin Brava, indeed!
And the Our Kind Of Love in Billy Elliot
@@darkangelw8472 The Beautiful Game.
I think this version is far superior to the one that eventually ended up in the Phantom sequel.

This was the song intended for the sequel, but they changed the lyrics and put it in another musical.
It’s also Our kind of love from Beautiful Game

Very dignified performance of a beautiful melody, wonderful sentiments, lovely.
Absolutely stunning , beautiful performance by Dame Kiri Te Kanawa.

Her voice is amazing and her tuxedo suit is so fresh.
a true vocal masterclass. that was everything and more.
I've never heard of Dame Kiri until I saw this performance in another video last March. I was mesmerized by her performance.
Sir Andrew L.W. and Dame Kiri Te K… two living legends… could there be a more exquisite combination in the world of music? This beautiful heartfelt rendition - sung on ALWs 50th birthday at the RAH - will be remembered for generations… ! ❤❤

Sierra Boggess and Ana O Byrne were way better than this performer
@@Travisvader22 I've never heard Ana O Byrne. I'll check it out! Sierra Boggess is amazing though, I have to agree.
Simply STUNNING!
👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
Have had absolute privilege of seeing Dame Kiri sing in concert 3 times, the last one in my beloved Tassie.
No words to describe how magnificent Dame Kiri is.

Absolute VOCAL PERFECTION!!!! BRAVO 👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
Thank you, Dame Kiri, for all you have given us.
Breath taking, sends goose pimples right through me. Thank you so much Dame Kiri

What an incredible version, absolutely beautiful
what a wonderful performance by Dame Kiri
Beautiful song, sung beautifully!
Such a great songbird
Spectacular! The song combines the best of Kiri’s talents - her ease in the pop style, combined with her soaring soprano voice.
Lhģ
Thank you dear Kiri for giving us your music so generously……..❤❤❤❤❤
Exquisite. And so moving!
This song has been playing in my head the past two days… I finally have time to sit down and listen to the legend!
And these lyrics which were put together at the very start are not sang in today production .This is superior even to Sierra Boggas version from the musical....
Thank you Edith for introducing me to her. The New Zealand songbird we call her.
One of the greatest of the last century, I hope the new ons listen and learn
Beautiful voice and beautiful lady!
most beatiful note (absolute perfection): 4:56
Amazing, I've been listening to the song for years, goosebumps every time
THIS song should never had been replaced in the musical!! 😡
I love Kiri and her wonderful voice.
Brasil 2019
So Amazingly Wonderful!
😊😊😊
magnificent/////
My Grandma recently passed away, this was one of her favourite songs
"The Heart Is Slow To Learn"
The heart is slow to learn
The heart is slow to learn
These feelings that I feel
Are foolish but they're real
I'm wise enough to see
This love will never be
And each day's like the last,
When living in the past
I know it's mad and you won't return
But then, as I have said,
The heart is slow to learn
I'll live alone, as I have loved you
Why is love cruel?
I wish I knew!
Say what you will, it doesn't matter
Until I die, there's only you
Until I die, there's only you
The heart is slow to learn,
The heart is slow to learn
You'd think there'd be a way
To shut out yesterday
Perhaps if I just thought
Of all the times we fought
I've tried all that but no
There's just no letting go
I know it's mad and you won't return
But then, as I have said,
The heart is slow to learn
Why is love cruel?
I wish I knew!
Say what you will,
It doesn't matter
Until I die there's only you
Until I die there's only you
Why is love cruel?
I wish I knew!
Say what you will
It doesn't matter
Until I die there's only you
Until I die there's only you.
The Heart Is Slow to Learn
great
Thank you 😃💚
I think "I'll live alone..." is "I'll never love as I have loved you..."
Thank you
Wrong lyrics. Love never dies. Love will continue hearts may get broken
Dame Kiri Te Kanawa is the legend.
Our Kiri - we are so proud of her - she captured the World with her stunning voice - I am so amazed at the many Artisans a tiny little country like New Zealand produces.
Wow!!! So beautiful!!! By the way, Dame Kiri looks like a million bucks!!!
One year after her divorce! A 30 year marriage.... she looks wonderful and was happy to be singing this for the first time anyone ever sang it. ALW chose her to sing it and I saw a video of her with ALW practicing the song.
and that entrance ,setting the mood from her first step ,then takes it further with this performance .stunning
Absolutely stunning.
I was surprised to learn Love Never Dies was a reincarnation of this! Very cool!
the other performers in this think they can sing but only kiri knows she can no body to touch her
Such a powerful voice, whenever I heard this song or the Love Never Dies version by others, tears roll.
When class , talent and skill is all that’s needed. Just the music and the voice. Glad I’m seeing good comments. Not everyone is dumb. Phew
So beautiful, thank you Kiri
I love her voice and I love this song!
She’s the best in my book! Love her and saw her in person once 10 years ago!
This is how it’s done, stunning
Dame is privilege.. all participans should be grateful. Expression, nuances 🍀🌟💙🎭🌹😩😭😘 bravi tutti
This song for me is a tear-jerker..... but so beautifully sung by this gracious opera singer...!!!! Bravo...!!!!
Exquisite!! I am vibrating with emotion here! And in tears....so lovely!
haha I was in tears hearing love never dies live. when Meghan Picerno sang the title song with this same tune, I was bawling!
Gorgeous lady Gorgeous voice
I still remember seeing this with my grandparents as a teen and I cried so much.
Being obsessed with the phantom... this was such a treat and still is xx stunning
Brava! Very beautiful voice!
So beautiful 😍
I just wished that she sung Love Never Dies! I know that this was in 1998 but imagine her singing Love Never Dies. With that voice and that heartbreaking lyrics will really be magical!
Lord Loyd Webber composed this song for Dame Kiri
I love how she get's that great high note in at the end of 'happy birthday' lol
Me too.
She is one of a kind !❤
Perfectly dressed ❤
That happy birthday song really made my day!!!
Will say it again so beautiful I really adore this song 🎵 ❤️
Beautiful Lady, God given voice......!
What a magnificent beautiful voice and her diction was suberb
I love the lyrics to this piece so much better than the ones Webber decided to go with. too bad
The whole sequel is awful, so it's just as well this rendition or variant didn't go down with the ship.
The Sequel was awesome. I loved the musical Love Never Dies.
@FMLover1986 nah...
Maravilhosa. Esta música é uma verdadeira declaração de amor sob a mágica música de Webber.
This song’s lyrics are so much better than Til I Hear You Sing Once More!!
What a true in voice of that madame! Commplimenti!
Simplemente maravillosa.!!
Beautiful voice from Newzland
She...owns the Music...
Until I die there's only you... Everlasting love...
My love for you!
Perfection !
Bravo! 👋
Bravissima! E' la prima volta che la ascolto. Eppure sono un appassionato di lirica da decine di anni. Mi piacerebbe leggere un commento di Bodiloto.
