How interesting. You’re the best tour guide, I love your narratives, they’re loaded with history but also full of vitality and insight. The obese dude, King Gorgehimself, and his cemetery of poor dead animals hanged in the kitchen, with the dragons, serpents, and other dark references all over the place, gave the estate an uneasy resonance. Yet you made it upbeat and delightful. Enjoying this adventure. God bless you and Phillip in your travels.

I found it amusing that in that splendiferous kitchen there was still an “elf on the shelf” in the background 😂😂 The wee little mice were a lovely touch too.
It boggles the mind that there was so much excess everywhere but the pavilion is certainly splendid!

Love Brighton my son lived there for some years during the '90s. Before it became "gentrified" and rents were cheap. The old Georgian houses were being bought up by the Londoners and eventually refurbished. Hope it has still retained some of its charm as a seaside day trip from London. The seagulls are the size of Eagles and very bold.😂 The pavillion is a must visit. Its out of this world. Thank you Stephanie for the memories.

When I was 18 I had a crazy best friend and one day he came to pick me up from college (St Martins) in one of his sports cars, and drove me to Brighton, except I didn't know where we were going. It was raining and dark and he parked by the sea and then blindfolded me and guided me across the road and into a building. I could feel the thick carpet and lovely smell of beeswax as we walked up some stairs and then into an apartment. In the middle of the room he took off the blindfold and put on the light and it was an incredible room with huge Murano chandelier and an enormous marble fireplace. Each room had a Murano chendelier and the main room had a wall of bookcases and you pushed the central one that opened into a bedroom and in the corner was another jib door leading into a tiny bathroom clad in Lapis Lazuli. Along the front of the apartment was a glazed walkway/veranda overlooking the sea. The apartment took up the whole floor of what was a huge white Victorian building and he had bought it a few weeks ago and I was the first to visit! I spent many many weekends there looking after his two Great Danes, Alexandra and Alexia when he was away travelling. He turned the veranda into an incredible kitchen as the original kitchen was small and very defunct! There was even a separate part of the flat for the servants and children.

Just to be a little more accurate on the history, Queen Victoria disliked the pavilion and only spent one Christmas there. She sold it to Brighton council in 1850. Prince Albert had nothing to do with the design of the building. In 1815, George IV, then prince regent commissioned John Nash to begin the transformation from modest villa into the magnificent oriental palace that we see today.

Yes - being a very prudish woman, Queen Victoria heartily disapproved of the self-indulgent Georgian monarchs who reigned before her. She inherited the throne from her uncle, King William IV, who was the younger brother of George IV, who built the Brighton Pavilion. The only reason Victoria became queen, was because her uncle William had no legitimate heirs of his own - but he did have 10 healthy children - five girls and five boys - by his long term mistress, the Irish actress Dorothea Jordan. His daughters, in those unenlightened times, were not even considered as potential monarchs, being mere females, and his sons could not succeed to the throne either, because they were born, as the English say - 'on the wrong side of the blanket.'

So great to see you here ! I love The Pavillion so much. There are many really old bits of Brighton dotted all over. Note the sad remains of the West Pier in the background sea view.. I often think of what an extraordinary place it must have been with it's huge ballroom. On a happier note the old Hippodrome music venue is being restored..from the days of Brighton rock etc, the Beatles and many of the old greats played there. So much history.Happy travels.
