    I've been using circle hooks for years Gamakatsu Octopus Circle Hooks and I've never snelled my hooks, I use a modified improved clinch knot on my hooks, I have let them load up on the rod and bend it over and I have reeled down on them. Knock on wood haven't missed one yet.

      Many knots will work with circle hooks. Scientifically, the snell knot works the best. I love an improved clinch knot and use them for my swivels. Thanks for watching good luck and tight lines

    I've heard the snell knot argument before but nobody has been able to show me the physics of why the connection from your line to the hook makes a difference. If anything the hook type (straight eye vs bent eye) seems like it would be a bigger factor.

    • @JustinFraleyJustCatchFish

      I used to use a clinch knot on circle hooks and it actually made it worse and lost confidence in them. Had a friend go fishing with me and he didn’t have an issue and I was impressed. Studied a few different techniques on certain ways to tie a snell and found the one I liked the best. Thanks for watching good luck and tight lines!

    Do you find that the offset circle hooks tend to gut hook more fish than the inline circle hooks?

    • @JustinFraleyJustCatchFish
      @JustinFraleyJustCatchFish  3 года назад +3

      Both do a fantastic job of not gut hooking a fish. The offset I find does a better job of a quicker cleaner hook set

    im a bit confused, i thought having an offset in a circle hook defeats the design purpose for it to hook on the lip ,with offset are you not gut or deep hooking them? or does that bend in the shank do something to prevent that?

    • @JustinFraleyJustCatchFish
      @JustinFraleyJustCatchFish  3 года назад

      The circle hook design helps prevent gut/deep hook sets by setting the hook quicker than a traditional J Hook. The circle hook will start to set as the fish turns its head compared to having to set the hook manually with a J Hook design. The offset helps prevent the fish from spitting the hook. The design of the circle hook vs. the J hook is found at the point in the hook not the shank.

    • @ARCSTREAMS
      @ARCSTREAMS 3 года назад

      @@JustinFraleyJustCatchFish the in line and the bend of the hook point design are what helps keep this hook from deep or gutting set ,when you offset that in line you make the hook set right away possibly in the wrong place ,you might as well offset a j hook and get the same results ,if you are getting good lip set results its most likely because you are manually setting the hook fast upon a bite

      @@dand1587 just make your line tight. When they bite start reeling. I wouldn’t use less than a 5/0 or even 6/0. I use 8/0 and 10/0 but I’m targeting 40 pound fish. Just like catching a bluegill when the bobber goes down set the hook, if they are eating too long they will eventually swallow it.
