In this video, I point out that you do not need to play Resident Evil 1 before playing Resident Evil 2 to understand the story. That's definitely the case, however, you absolutely should play Resident Evil 1 because it's bloody brilliant. The remake is available on PC, PS4, and Xbox One. You should seriously consider checking it out.

11:05 I believe I read in an article or seen in some video that each of the zombies had individually set health and a set number of bullets it would take to kill them, I think the developers said they did that to give them unpredictable lethal blows to add suspense to every encounter.

As far as damage goes what it is is that if the reticle is fully zoomed in you do full damage. If it is not then you do like 70% damage. Your thoughts on head shots and crits are correct in regards to damage, however damage to the head is more likely to trigger a stagger animation (where they can not attack you) than say a chest shot, although that can still happen. Head, and then legs for most effective stagger locations.
Puzzles have to be able to be usable with enemies nearby because Mr.X chases you by every puzzle in the station pretty much and he would quickly become unbearable if you couldn't do anything just because he was close by.
The trick to the G monsters in the sewers is two fold. If they're submerged in water except for a tiny piece. Get to a middle distance and hit it with the pistol and then sprint past on it's left. It will take a few seconds to get out of the water and that's the time you use to run by. If it's already above water then take a step towards it then immediately back. it will take a swing at you and then while that animation is going you run by it on the right side.
There is a difficulty curve called adaptive difficulty. It does about what you'd expect.
Good to see you back nerd.

Theres debate over wither it starts out at 100% and letting it set does 170% or the like.
For weapon data that fucks with me a lot, because there are some really sick resources showing that the damage does increase at max readiness and that there are secondary crit modifiers that enhance crit chance by a substantial amount if you fire a shot in the frames where the reticule just sets totally :
      Part 1 : www.reddit.com/r/residentevil/comments/an1xcr/fact_finding_weapon_damage_part_1/
      Part 2 : www.reddit.com/r/residentevil/comments/anjas3/fact_finding_weapon_damage_part_2/
Part 1 covers HP for all enemies, curiously all zombies have hand picked HP values while all non zombies have fixed HP.

I love the review in the fact that much of what you base it on is extremely similar to my experience and opinion, growing up on the original as well. I played RE2 first and was a teen when it came out. Resident Evil 3 stands out to many, mainly because of Nemesis perhaps, but felt like half a story to me as well, although enjoyable and I played it many times. I was iffy at first when this remake was announced but I wanted to give it a chance and was incredibly happy I did. It felt nostalgic and all the little Easter eggs polished that feeling, plus keeping the original background score and sound effects as an option was a nice touch.
The things I will note is that when Claire consistently shouts, “what is up with you?” It feels less like she doesn’t realize she’s fighting zombies and more so frustration that they haven’t died yet. Which I’ve said myself sometimes out loud after a few head shots.
I do also appreciate them contextualizing the theme behind the precinct and why it is the way it is. But maybe I also just assumed it had so many mazes and puzzles because it was being ran by ***spoilers*** a psycho chief who was being paid an incredible amount of hush money, and well, perhaps his ego, eccentricities and resources helped make the trap doors and halls have such weird ways of accessing them. Them using the museum backstory helped because he seems like the type of loon who “appreciates art” despite some of his examples of art being rather morbid, immoral and macabre.
One thing I wish they paid better attention to was linking up the scenarios. In the original, it seems to have a higher level of detail in showing what character B was doing while character “A” was running around. It really felt like they were dealing with slightly different puzzles, etc.. because “A” already did X, Y, Z or vice versa. So in the end it really felt like two separate, rounded-out stories depending on who was the “A” character.
This time, it felt more linear. Like playing the B scenario didn’t change much story-wise, or navigation-wise. It definitely felt jarring compared to such level of detail they added overall that they didn’t have to (i.e. light coming through the bullet holes of the press room door after you turn on the light in the room, etc..); so I expected them rounding out the scenarios to be solid. but it’s something I guess I can look past since the story itself is laid out extremely similar to the original via plot, characters, etc.. I love Sherry’s role a lot better. It was more emotional. Kendo’s appearance gutted me as well.
Love your review and although, like you, I hold RE2 as my favorite and still do now because of this remake, I’m excited for RE3 and 8 if they can keep going at this rate of development improvement.

3 doesn't feel like a sequel because 3 WASN'T a real sequel. I forget the details but sony(i think)'s contract demanded a 3rd numbered game in the series. Capcom just slapped the number on a side story it to satisfy them (like a band fufilling a contract with a low effort filler album). The 3rd game is Code Veronica.

    • @PeacefulJoint
      @PeacefulJoint 5 лет назад +3

You are correct. Capcom had a deal with Sony to make 3 Ps1 "Exclusives". Code Veronica was planned to be 3 but a stand alone titled "The last Escape" was about 80% done so they slapped a 3 on it in Japan and renamed it nemisis is the US.

lol The zombies grabbing you is kind of a good example of why cops shouldn't go hands on/use less lethal until they have back up. Just imagine the zombies mouth as your gun being used by an attacker on you in a struggle. Firearms are a distance tool. If you bring a gun to a fist fight, it's no longer a fist fight. It's a gun fight. So they need complete cooperation before the get close.

I wish I felt as strong about the game. After finishing Leon A and than Claire B I felt more or less just "meh" after it.
I had enjoyment for sure; and the of rhythm of picking up items, back tracking, and fighting was enjoyable. But it just felt like I needed more from the game. I suppose it being a remake of an already existing game kind of limits the new things they can add. I still think its vastly better than RE7 in every way.

@@planescaped For sure. I was so disappointed how Leon and Claire barely met each other or even developed any friendship; and the story was so cringy lol. Maybe because I don't have any personal attachment to OG RE2 it's ruined for me. But at the same time, even as a game on it's own I didn't think it was that spectacular either. Your lack of a "total absence of light" is most likely the result of your display of choice as well as your display settings (and/or game settings). I'm playing on PC and without the HDR option enabled as well, but I'm using a calibrated OLED TV as my display and let me tell you, the blacks in the RE2 remake can be at 0 cd/m² without losing a significant amount of detail.

Graphics are great and level building is still incredible. This said, if u keep nostalgia at bay and unless u are a fan of RE, story and writing are super weak and these days this is not as acceptable as it was. I promised myself to finish the games I buy and I did not beat the B scenario yet (not sure I will now that death end request, sekiro and devil may cry come out). If u are not nostalgic or a fan of RE in my opinion this game will not win u over.

I mean it is an AAA game and maybe the best in its category but if u are not into AAA games that one won't win u over either. When it comes to norse settings Hellblade was the AAA exception for me being more of a niche gamer.

GOW and RE2 are still among the best ps4 games between 2018 and now (Kingdom Come and Vampyr apart... Dragon Quest was mediocre, Ni No Kuni 2 just bad... 2018 was not 2017!).

Great review! although if i do have one criticism about this game, it would be how lickers respond to the player. i can't tell if me walking VERY slowly will still cause the AI to hear it as a faint footsteps. plus their AI pathing is only limited to the room they spawn in, which can be exploited by going in an out a room and taking pot shots at them (which is what i did as Claire in the parking lot sequence). But overall, great game!

I played this on PC with HDR (I use my TV as PC monitor) and can confirm the elevated black levels are present even with HDR. It's just how they wanted it to look. If I remember correctly you only get elevated black levels in the Police Station. Later parts of the game use a more plain style where blacks look like you'd expect. But I haven't played the game in over a week so I might be misremembering. What HDR does in this game is simply enhance the art style you're already getting in SDR. For example in SDR artificial light sources like lamps can look a tad overdone, like they're burning into the screen. In HDR those lamps instead look completely natural.

My complaints are the enemies are incredibly bullet-spongy, their reach is incredible, you don't stab them in the skull with your knife and there is no melee combat or dodge capabilities. Also I wish the sound design for Mr. X's footsteps was better. It can be hard to tell what floor he's on sometimes. Great game but it's more a 4.5 for me.

You're absolutely right about standard mode, purists will condemn you for not playing hardcore but replaying a huge chunk of the game in a system with limited saves is a recipe for potential disaster. I only wish there was a way to play hardcore, or maybe even a more difficult mode that used infinite saving and autosaves.
Just because the original save system worked like that with ink ribbons it doesn't mean it's better.

I don't give a fuck what purists say. When I want a quick scare with friends we don't even put it on standard. We put it on assisted. Have some fun and play a good horror game that lets us fight back. Never let someone else define your fun for you. Whether you're playing assisted, standard, or hardcore nothings wrong with that. I beat the game in 2hours 1min and 22seconds on hardcore. I'd play it on assisted any day of the week over hardcore.

Fantastic video. It's great to hear a review from an old school fan who isn't steeped in nostalgia. The old RE games have been giving this martyr status that has lead to a lot of people not accepting any change. Resident Evil got burned hard with RE5 & 6, but the change in camera perspective was for the better. REmake is an incredible game, but if you've played the original you know it's mostly an improved version of the 1996 game with new stuff. This game managed to redesign the whole thing from the ground up and it worked out better than any remake I think.
I've noticed a lot of people get confused by the weird camera transitions. This is a completely VALID complaint but I'm going to go against the grain and say that it's a creative decision. The post processing in RE2 is meant to make it look shot on film with stuff like the camera distortion, chromatic aberration, film grain. As someone who works regularly with cameras as a hobby, I can tell you that weird transition is in line with changing white balance on a camera when lighting & its source change, something your eyes naturally do almost instantaneously. You wouldn't normally notice this on movies because they either make sure every set is lit identically, it's fixed in post, or you just don't see such a direct transition from one light source to another without a cut. It's kind of funny, but in games one of the best examples of this would be the original RE2. There are rooms with wildly different white points in every location, but you have an entire door transition to make it look like a separate entity. So, in this remake, if you wanted the RPD main hall to have it's same warm color pallette, but redesign the East Hallway to have this new colder one this kind of transition is in line. The same kinda goes for the weird black levels. When combined with artificial film grain it's aligned with being able to see more detail in the shadows. If you wanted deep blacks AND good color and fidelity on a lit subject you're in for a hard time since cameras don't really act the same way as our eyes. Totally ok to not appreciate or like the effect, but I think it's one of the best games I've ever seen in replicating the look of film. Even the motion blur is in line with the correct amount if shot correctly.
RE7 did this extremely well, too. One of my favorite moments is when you're speaking to Lucas on the CRT television and it's a legit piece of interlaced video. These are all things that are relics of the time they're from. Objective visual fidelity is kind of a given now, so to see the flaws of old replicated to give something a distinct style I really appreciate it

I played REmake but I didn't like it. I had just come off the heels of playing Ninja Gaiden Black after it became backwards compatible, and REmake was so boring for me in comparison. I guess I'm just not into survival horror, but I did greatly enjoy the first TEW.
If I had to he honest, though, I think Mikami's best works are his action games - God Hand and Vanquish. His best survical horror game is TEW, but RE4 is also a good answer.

The evil within is nothing but a buggy mess. Once Mikami was taken off as director it became half decent in the sequel. I say that from a technical perspective, as the story wasnt that great. @@PeacefulJoint I encountered not one bug in 2 playthroughs on TEW. It's one of the most refined games of the generation. Everything works in that game except for some minor hiccups.
The Evil Within 2 gives me the same issues as the new God of War, and the Sigma Ninja Gaiden games. The sigma games changed things for literally no reason, when they worked the first time. The Evil Within 1 just needed a spit shine, but the second one was a complete overhaul and everything was made worse.
God of War is an example of a game that does everything fairly well, but excels at nothing. TEW2 is much the same. It's a functioning game and quite competent, but it doesn't excel in any are. Story? There are games with better stories. Gunplay? Even the first one was better at this. Upgrade system? Changed when it wasn't broken to begin with, all they did was add more "stuff" as if that makes it better. Gunplay? A complete joke compared to dedicated shooters like Doom.
TEW2 excels at neither gunplay, enemy engagement, nor resource management. You say TEW was a mess without providing examples, and say TEW2 is competent without providing examples. There are few things TEW2 does better than the first one, and these are all minor elements that do not matter in a game, like Seb taking his knife out before a stealth kill.
Speaking of stealth, it's far undercooked in this game, another thing it doesn't excel at. Dedicated stealth games like Splinter Cell, Thief 2, even Dishonored do Stealth better, yet the game pushes for stealth so heavily that it's laughable.
I can go on, but I see no reason to further discuss game design with the idiots that plague the internet.

I switched off HDR and tweaked the brightness levels in game and it made a big difference. Even the colour was more vivid than HDR. It also helped that my TV is calibrated to the right settings, (Basically, a fine adjusted 'Standard' or 'Movie' mode with zero enhancements on) If you are on PC, you'll have loads more options there. REmake 2 is slowly approaching that “too praised for its own good” territory. Where a product is so universally praised that it becomes cool to hate on and draws out the snobs who have to announce that they actually think it’s shit or weren’t impressed. That random youtuber with like 237 Subscribers spends 19min of pretentious dialog explaining why it’s not as good as everyone thinks. The Last of Us, The Matrix, RE4, The Dark Knight, P.T. Etc all suffered from this....phase

Are you saying that Resident Evil is the Darksouls of horror games?
I think the series has always been about exploring tightly interconnected environnements but the lack of loading does make things more seamless. That and having full control of the camera.
Characters with repeting lines always seemed forced to me. It's good when they're scripted for moments but otherwise it becomes annoying and ruins moments because they talk to much. Also there is apparently a dodge but it's hard to pull off.
Edit: the station was always contextualised as a museum. Unless you're comparing puzzles from the other games.

I disagree a lot about Mr X. I think he was implemented better in the original game. He follows you too much in this, to the point where he just becomes a nuisance, and stops being scary. The scripted moments, like when he lifts the helicopter or busts through walls were good, but he was too commonplace overall, especially on the B scenarios. The different scenarios were handled better in the original game too.
I think the game is overhyped. It’s definitely a good game, but it’s not genre defining, because it’s not as scary as the scariest games and the action isn’t as good as other games in the series. The level design is good, but the Spencer mansion is a much better location than the police station. I replayed REmake recently, and felt that that was the better game, even though this game does make some improvements that would have been carried over from RE7.
I do hope this phase of characters talking to themselves dies out in games at some point. I blame Uncharted for popularizing this trend. But at least in that game it suited the tone. It just seems out of place that two characters barely in their 20s in a city full of zombies, would come out with some of the shit they do.

Yea, I feel the same. The reason the Tyrant worked better in the old game was he was exclusively in the B scenario. By then you are familiar with the game and him showing up is a nice break from the monotony.

    • @demongrenade2748

I disagree somewhat. In the original I felt he was under utilized, and wasn't all that menacing given his incredibly slow speed. I'm a big fan of changing him to be a more constant threat. Plus he's not that hard to avoid or lose once he gives chase. I honestly wish he had more ways of combating the player, like being able to grab you across a table or counter.
I also don't mind characters talking to themselves. I talk to myself aloud when I'm alone, lots of people do. I'd especially do it if I was stuck in a batshit insane police station filled with walking corpses that were trying to eat me. Shits stressful, and a natural response to that would be to talk yourself through it. So it doesn't bother me personally.
I do agree that the game is somewhat overhyped. It's a great game, but as you said, putting the label of 'genre defining' on it is going too far. Mostly because its following the rules of its own genre without doing anything new. The mechanics are pulled from resident evil 4 with the addition of walking and aiming and the level design of resident evil 2. All the other choices that the game makes mechanically are to balance that combination until it becomes survival horror.
Resident evil 1 was genre defining. It created the rules of survival horror that all games in that genre are judged by. That's what it means to be genre defining.
Resident evil 2 remake is still just survival horror. It didn't recreate it or redefine it, or expand it. It fits neatly into that category and all its expectations. That's just adhering to genre, not defining it.

@@demongrenade2748 I think Nemesis was the ideal balance between the two.
I didn't mind some of it. Their first reaction to Mr X was cool and Leon's reaction to one of his much later appearances also made me laugh, but there was too much of it, and it didn't make sense why they'd say a lot of what they did.
The mechanics are even somewhat dumbed down from RE4. RE4 had a lot more depth to its hit zone locations on enemies system and none of the enemies felt like huge bullet sponges.
I'd say even RE4 is more genre defining than this, because it caused lots of other games to have over the shoulder shooting interfaces. But that's not entirely a good thing.

Despite not being a horror gamer, I purchased Dead Space upon hearing so much good about it, and *loved* it.
Naturally I did the same thing here... and frankly, I found RE2 remake utterly mediocre. The story is terribly dated and the gameplay, while fun once, wasn't great enough to entice me to get through it more than once. In this instance, I don't think the hype is justified... I beat it in 4 hours, and I usually take forever beating games, and with how bland the story is I have no desire to play it again.
Perhaps it is because I have no nostalgia for this series, and a personal distaste for "evil corporation wants to take over the world" weak ass plots, but I did not see the magic here...

Res2 is really good for what it does but defenetly aged in some departments, and i thougt you were someone that tells it for what it is like you did with evil within. Dissapointing.....and i finished res2 on ps4pro but defenetly not the best horror game out there, the most technological advenced 1080p60fps Yes! But not the best horror game!
