    I would LOVE to have William back. His voice is so posh yet the things he says are some of the funniest I've heard. Would be great to review Pretentious Ingredients or have some sort of etiquette game!

    This was such a hilarious and fun episode to watch. As Mike pointed out there is a negative connotation to etiquette in terms of it being very posh and classist, but it's really nice to see someone break it down to something as simple as being confident and kind, as well as something that changes with time.
    I think my favorite bit though was just Jamie laughing all through the podcast. You can tell he really enjoyed this interview.

      @@Psylaine64 I was taught not to shame but don't copy. I'm to ignore the faux pas. If you don't see it, it didn't happen. I'm not to mention it so no one gets embarrassed. We don't make assumptions and we just carry on doing what we were taught to do. The reason for this is there is always the slim chance that if I copy and the person who made the mistake learns of their mistake, they might think I was mocking them, and mocking them publicly.

      @@lunatickgeo As long as the food gets in their mouth without getting on them or the table/floor or otherwise making a mess, then it doesn't fucking matter what utensil is used. If someone wants to eat with a knife and can do it without cutting themselves or making a mess then I don't give fuck.

      @@dealbreakerc I don't know if this is your intention so I apologize in advance if it isn't, but there's this attitude some people have (like the one you're describing) that implies having standards is somehow pretentious and ridiculous. If someone ate with their hands at a sit-down formal dinner and put one foot up on their seat so they can rest their elbow on their knee as they eat and disregards the utensils, I'm sorry but I will give a fuck.
      I will ignore the person as I was taught, I will not shame them or correct them, but you bet they will never get an invite from me again. Etiquette goes both ways, respect to the guest but respect to the host as well.
      If a person can't be bothered to subscribe to society's norms, then they better find a society with behavior they are more in line with.

    I love the description of why teach etiquette.
    Working with students from marginalized backgrounds, and important part is etiquette. Both workplace and social. It gives the confidence to navigate the world and workplace they'll be entering.
    It might be worth teaching most students some if that... Even the email etiquette I'd expect seems to be missing - but in other ways they are ahead of many older people when it comes to things like Ms, Mx and just respecting others.

    As an american, it's fun to see all these wonderful UK guests on the podcast! I would think it would be difficult to pin down the "highest person of etiquette" seeing how much you guys care about proper etiquette in general, but I can see that he is on an upper echelon of prim and proper.😂

    I fully agree on the force of habit thing. I am a registered nurse and I notice if people have good veins on their forearms to put IV catheters in wherever I am. And I say to my girlfriend sometimes "Oh, that cashier had very good looking veins". 😅

    This posh system of etiquette and conversational style, the whole ruleset, has something incredibly calming to it. The structure somehow ensures a certain safety on a social level.
    Absolutly makes sense to me.

    I’ve always thought the two most important things you can teach children are (1) good reading skills (because they can then learn anything) and (2) good etiquette skills (because they can then be comfortable anywhere). 💙

      Absolutely agree! I’ve learned so many (potentially questionable) things from reading and was taught basic etiquette by my family. My finer etiquette was surprisingly taught through my high school and the US Marine Corps

    Loving this! In the 80s, my family and I became fans of the books of Judith Martin from the US who had a syndicated column as "Miss Manners." Her hilarious examples of questions and responses were wonderful (I still have and reread many of her books) and truly reflected the principles of kindness and awareness as well as educating many about the history of how some of the customs came about and why they varied in different places.

    I had an experience similar to Em's. I had just taken a lasagna out of the oven. It was in my nice cobalt blue Pyrex baking dish and had been considerably overcooked. I set it down on the cupboard on a thick hot pad and left the room (fortunately) to do something else. I could hear an odd ticking noise, so I turned around to head back into the kitchen, just as the lasagna dish exploded spectacularly. There were bits of noodles, sauce, ground beef, and crumbles of blue glass all over the kitchen. I am assuming that the hot pad was a bit damp; otherwise, I have no idea why the dish exploded. Thank goodness no one was hurt by the flying glass and scalding hot ingredients, but it was hell to clean up. Peter and I love watching Sorted Food.

      I had a pyrex dish explode on me too!! I had just made a spinach pie which I normally add a bit of milk at the end to crisp up the pastry and so it doesn't dry out. I turned off the oven when it was done but mum decided to turn the oven on to "heat" it up a bit more and we heard a huge bang of glass shattering.
      My theory has always been that there was no longer any water/ liquid left and that's why it exploded, but it has always been a mystery to me.

      Was your kitchen fairly cold that day? Even if you lay something on a hot pad if the rooms fairly cold the scalding hot glass rapidly changing temperatures probably caused it to shatter also it could be micro cracks formed while it was heating up and expanding then cooling down and de expanding causing it to break again!
      Not a scientist though had the same thing happen during a very cold day after heating up a jug to boiling temps as soon as I heard the cracking I placed it in a washing up bowl and booked it out of the room 😅 a few seconds later it went boom luckily not to much mess

      @@JakkuTheMagicalCattu That's a good question. This happened several years ago, but our kitchen isn't normally cold except for first thing in the morning. It has a large south-facing window and a baseboard heater in the dining area.

    Listening to this podcast shows me how etiquette can be slightly different from country to country.
    As being born in Northern Germany and raised pretty old-fashioned I was taught for example to be on time for a dinner party, because too early was the same like you said, but being too late might "ruin" the prepared meals. Like my granny said: Too early is also not on time.

    I didn’t finish this as I have to return from my break at the office. I can’t wait to listen to more of this podcast on my way home. What a marvelous inside about the British etiquette! As a born and raised South American, I couldn’t help but laughing out loud about arriving on time -or early- to a dinner party. There is a wonderful viral video of three guys dressed like their Italian mothers yelling orders to each other in controlled chaos, putting the food in plates, school cafeteria style. Those are the dinner parties I’m more used to! 😂

    Very interested to see the impact that other cultures have when you're trained in etiquette for your country/culture. Back at home, we definitely stagger the arrival times but we tend to prioritize mini-plates for people to pick at rather than large dinners with everyone sitting at once.

    This was a great interview. Much more interesting and fun than I expected. Thank you William.
    My favourite example of etiquette in action was attending a formal banquet in China. We were told beforehand that the last course (of many) would be oranges. This is the signal that the banquet has ended and it's time to leave. I think that's such a good idea.

      I remember being told that "it's not over til the rice arrives", rice being the last savoury item normally served at a normal "posh" meal in China (not a banquet). Super super useful to know!

    On the subject of bigger burgers, there are a few factors that come into play. The main one is practical: increasing the size of a burger by stacking another patty means that the same size bun can be used for all permutations. The second is more about visualization vs geometry. Your eyes want to believe that a burger patty that is twice as wide is twice as large area-wise when it is in fact FOUR times bigger, and not believe that the one that actually is twice as large is only 50% wider.

    I just wanted to say, this is the first of your podcasts I have listened to and I loved this. Thank you. I love the idea of thinking of etiquette as confidence! I was definitely the person who said "it's not important" because I didn't understand it but I love the idea of it being able to KNOW those things so you can focus on the big picture. Obviously part of the reason rich people are (often more) successful (than equally talented less rich people) is because they have money/education/connections behind them but there also has to be something said for the people who are maybe a little bit more posher KNOW all this etiquette stuff and maybe that makes like thinking about the big picture and doing the networking/hobnobbing easier? I don't know. Have I made it political?

    As as USA viewer.... you should try to talk to Alton Brown. He had an amazing show called Good Eats. Started off in Cinematography and became a chef. He's also a staunch critic of unitasking kitchen gadgets. Worth a look at getting him to London or meet him near Atlanta, Georgia.
