  • I continue work on the septic trench between the utility building and the septic tank. I cover the trench and pipes with sand, foam board, sand, detectable tape, sand and native fill. This was filmed in October 2023.

We love learning! That's how we are able to accomplish projects like this with no experience.

Hey Diana, have you ever calculated how many calories you are burning in a day?? SO much physical work! Glad to see you again.

Haha, I haven't! But my watch counts steps and sometimes I get 20k steps a day on work days!

It's interesting, my septic engineer didn't require I do foam and I'm way above frost depth from house to septic and septic to leach field. My slope is very steep from the tank to the field though. Yours looks shallow I'm guessing that's the difference?

That is interesting. Yes, our slope makes the required drop for a septic pipe, but otherwise it is not steep. That could be the difference. Another reason could be whether the snow on top of it will be plowed or not as snow does provide insulation too. Ours is under driveway so it will be clear of snow at all times.

It seems to me that you guys have been doing a septic system for almost four years, does that sound right?

At least it seems like 4 years!

We cleared the trees for the leach fields in May 2022. The leach field and tanks went in September-October 2022. The system stayed like that until we added this pipe extension in October 2023.
Doing everything ourselves, things take time. And they don’t always happen linearly. Sometimes we have to do a bit of one project, then move onto something else before coming back to the first project.
There’ll be more septic work in future when we have to plumb in the utility building and house too.
