  • DEAR CVP's!
    TODAY IS THE DAY!!
This is episode you've all been waiting for!
MY Golden CONURE has Feather Destructive Behavior! He’s plucking!
Behavioral causes of feather-picking may include stress from various sources, including lack of stimulation ('boredom'), sleep deprivation, and sexual frustration. Boredom may result from lack of appropriate toys, not enough foraging opportunities, or not enough interaction with other individuals (human or avian).
    Feather Destructive Behaviour
Feather plucking, also known as FDB (Feather Destructive Behaviour) is not seen in wild Parrots. It’s a behaviour of captive bred or wild caught Parrots, living in homes or aviaries.
You can take a look at some products that can stop feather plucking here.
    Causes of Feather Plucking
When you examine reasons for any particular bird plucking there can be one of many causes or a combination of several. A plucked bird might be a rehome or second-hand Parrot or may be a pet Parrot who begins this worrying habit. The first thing to do is to stay calm, look for possible causes and then possible solutions.
Causes of plucking can be described as fitting into three groups (though there can be some overlap): Medical, Environmental and Behavioural
For medical causes, you will need the help of an avian vet, who will discuss the Parrot’s home environment and behavioural issues in detail.
    Medical
    · Skin infections or inflammations
    · Parasites like ringworm
    · Feather cyst
    · Liver disease
    · Cancer
    · Poisoning by heavy metals like zinc
    · Metabolic disorders
    · PBFD
    Environmental
    - Malnutrition
    - Allergies to environmental factors or food
    - Dryness of the skin due to low humidity
    - Dyes and preservatives in the food
    - Not enough time to rest in a too busy household
    - Lack of natural sunlight and fresh air
    - Nicotine in the birds’ vicinity
    - Lack of enrichment items
    Behavioural
    · Boredom
    · Emotional stress

Poor baby. I feel so bad for him. Heaps of love and care and attention, loads of chew toys, a fabulous diet, some really good playstands and trees so he can get lots of climbing exercise, and hopefully he will stop plucking and chewing.
I feel so bad for you, Caroline. They may never fledge properly now, which is an absolute tragedy. I can't believe the breeder lied to you (well yes, I can, because some people are greedy a-holes).
I'm glad they are in your capable hands.

Poor little Star, but luckily is his situation temporarily. In 9 or 10 months his feathers have grown back. I am sure that you give him all the attention and love that he need right now, I hope that you will find your diamond, he is too big for a small bird to eat. I hope that everything will be all right within time. But in the mean time, these birdies are both sweet and beautiful, have patience, they are worth to be loved.❤😊

I did notice the seller said they don't fly, then that they fly well, be careful. But he behaved as though he wasn't concerned about them flying away at all.
People who do this to birds make me so damn angry, too.

What a shame, 😢 but they have you now and eventually they will fly, I’ve never heard of FDB, poor baby, one of my birds lost his flight feathers after a night fright, cockatiels are prone to them, and it broke my heart to see him disabled, he would crawl up on my leg to be carried, it took a while but they grew back eventually, give your bird a kiss from me ❤

Clipping is just awful... it takes away a bird's natural innate ability. Very sad, but hopefully, you will be able to help him overcome this. I can truly understand why he has this destructive trait.
Carolin, wishing you, hubby, and flock a very Merry Christmas. 🎄💗

That's so sad, because of a trauma that a nonsense breeder caused. From my golden conure experience, what I would say if you don't mind giving my opinion. Get your birds into harness and click training asap. by getting him out and desensitizing, regular baths (my golden showers everyday with me, he is like a golden retriever, he loves water, and goldens love water) and also giving toys, he will recover. My male golden is obsessed with wood toys. I buy wood rings 1 inch size at Amazon and I spread around, he chews all day long and his anxiety gets controlled.

      Great advice!
I give them daily bowls with filtered water.
      so chew toys.
But I will buy them more.
I did already hardness training and get them out the house.

I would never buy from someone in a carpark.. don't care if he had reviews or not! Im surprised, seeing you have a few birds already! Only buy from reputable people, or better still, adopt!!

That is so sad what the breeder did to Star. I think I would trust Omar's, Magnolia Farm and Agustin's for buying a bird before I went to a private breeder in California where exotic birds are moved so fast in selling.
If this bird has a good chance to recover it will be with you, Carolin. 🦜💖

It’s impossible to find golden conures in a pet shop. No one has them. The only way to get them is through a private breeder.
