My Dad rescued a sun conure from a dentist's office in town that had an aviary that was being torn down. He was a known bird person so everyone called him first to rehome. We brought her home and learned that she had no interaction apart from feeding for 23 years, but we let her out and she flew around our house to explore with no trouble. She sat on the side of our bowls that night to share dinner and managed to sleep in bed with my dad. She was always very welcoming to new people and would fly down and greet them most of the time. The fact that she didn't have interaction for so long made it so surprising but she turned out to be a really perfect bird. Lived to be 29

I'm new to this. We are thinking about a therapy bird.
I have an African grey. He will be with us for 2 years on May 4th. His worst sound is the smoke detector. It's his "I'm nervous" sound. My favorite thing he does is a fart or burp sound followed by hysterical laughter. I love my grey. He talks a lot and it's a huge mix of wild bird calls, digital sounds, and a few words and song bits. He whistles a lot too. He is not overly social with being held but he loves to say hello to kids, dog walkers, and the neighbors when he's outside.
I am the owner of initially a Quaker Parakeet since last September 2020;
However , I love both the SunConure and the African Greys..
When I was looking for a parrot to bring home, I was really thinking I was going to get a Sun Conure , but because I live in an apartment with neighbors above , on the sides and behind me, I was advised that getting Sun Conure would most likely not be a good idea , since their volume levels can get pretty high and may cause my neighbors to start complaining about the noise my bird is making ..
As for going with an African Grey instead, ( which is my Dream Parrot ) I had to unfortunately for go because , Well the price for that particular breed of parrot is quite a bit out of my price range 🥲...
So I ended up going with my Quaker “Luna”...
I love her to pieces, but find that she is just a loud as a Sun Conure at times with her screeching...
Fortunately my neighbors haven’t complained so far & so good 😊
So I am thinking now that maybe just maybe I could’ve gotten a Sun Conure like I I initially wanted to go with ...
Oh well, it what is, and either way I will would love to have either a Sun Conure or an African Grey hopefully in the future..
@@sharonwheat4288 I got Sailor for only 300, at the age of 20. I agree the prices are crazy, and the wait-list for babies is ridiculous too. If you find yourself a rescue, prices should be much more reasonable. Mine, I got on craigslist from a man who was moving. Just be careful of scams.
I have been looking into buying a bird but can’t find any. I’ve lined for sanctuaries and can’t find any nearby and none on Craigslist or through breeders. Maybe I’m just bad at finding them, but the only place I’ve found is at a flea market. I would rather do a rescue or find a young bird through a breeder but if you could lmk any other forms that you tried looking it would be super cool
@@sharonwheat4288 I know a quaker wasn't your first choice, but they really are wonderful birds. I had the pleasure of loving a rescue quaker for a time. He was an older bird with some health problems and wasn't with me for long, but he was so charming and inteligent. I tried to teach him to say hello whenever he heard someone knock, but he learned to knock with his beak and say hello instead. He was my first parrot and I miss him every day.
@@laurenmellen654 Don’t get me wrong, Now that I have had my Quaker baby girl “ Luna” ( 9 mos. old now) I have grown very attached to her even though she is quite Bratty most of times & very highly intelligent... I wouldn’t trade her in for the world...

conures are great! my little guy is so playful and mischievous :) they are a lot less dusty than many other species of birds as well, which is a big consideration in a household with an asthmatic
African Grays, Cockatoos, and Cockatiels are very dusty birds.
I have a sun conure and an African grey! I have had the grey for 10 years so introducing the conure was a big change. Much more noise and a lot livelier! But the grey defiantly has a more chill and talkative personality as apposed to the conure who's very active and tends to scream when excited.
My conure is so loveable and cute. The noise sucks but it’s not the worst. He is however so clingy. He wants to be with his people constantly which can be a bit of a problem. Working on stationing and staying. He also has bad manners with new people. The pandemic set back socialization

Same here on the clinginess. I live alone and have no other birds, so I'm pretty much the "mate".
I find that greys, at least mine, is really shy and doesn't talk when there are strangers in the house. But when there is something going on in the kitchen like I'm putting the dishes in the dishwasher, she starts to talk A LOT. Greys are also easy to train to talk. Whenever I come home, too, my Grey always does this ear piercing screech and rings her bells
my gray is so jealous over the dishwasher, totally get it lol
Until a year ago, I had both a Sun Conure and an African Grey. Pete, my Sun Conure passed in the night at age 20. :(
While I would agree with everything you have said, I will add that the Greys CAN be quieter--until they begin imitating the Conures! More than once, Riley, my Grey could be heard 'doing' Pete's screech, and then saying, "Pete, Shush". Pete however was sitting next to me, silently. lol.
When I came home at night, Pete would hear and recognize the sound of my car, get excited, and start up his squawk. How I miss that greeting now.
African grey is the best talker ever!! The smartest bird, but also with lots of needs.
for me budgies are the best talkers xD... They literally hold all the guinness world records

@ChosenML guiness is a terrible organization that doesn’t do their due diligence. They’re about charging people for so called “verification”. Their business isn’t in being correct. Citing guiness is not an acceptable source of information in any serious context. You could publicly break a record tomorrow and they would not change their records until you paid them several tens of thousands of dollars. It’s a scam. They even let proven cheats keep their records simply because the cheaters paid them and the true record holders didn’t.

I help out my local pet shop with cleaning cages and I was right next to the sun conure cage and their scream deafened me a bit 😂
Sun conures all the way. I feel like sun conures also have this really sweet cuddling and clown like personalities. They may be loud but they are so beautiful. I love my sun conure.
what do you think of mexican green conures? they are kind of like cherry head conures but all green. Are they similar to sun conures in personality?

I have a Catalina Macaw and African Gray and my Catalina Macaw is a total velcro bird. My African Gray likes to have me near her but doesn’t show the same level stress when I get ready to leave for work in the morning. Macaws can also make extremely loud contact calls, much louder than anything an African Gray can produce. In my experience African Grays are more independent and just love to be in your presence while the Catalina Macaw wants to be with me all the time. I try to split my time up pretty evenly between my three birds but my macaw is a lot more demanding of my time.

I love my grey because she talks and rarely squawks. But she does get moody. I can’t leave the room without my grey getting upset.

@@ryanmichalski3490 Birds can be potty trained. It's not that difficult. It's Very nice once it's done too. A lot of people don't realize that but it is quite common. I think it took like days to potty train my cockatoo. When she had to poop, she ran or flew back to her cage pooped and resumed playing, hanging out, cuddling, or whatever she was doing at the time. Mine and others remind me of a toddler or small child they get this look run to the bathroom and then return like nothing happened. Again, it NOT hard to teach or train a bird to be potty trained. And if I remember right, Jamie (BirdTricks) has a video on it as well as others. I used to know a guy that had an Amazon that went everywhere with him. Most of the time on his shoulder(s), And the guy's back was completely covered in bird poop. Now that was gross.

I love having a jenday conure. She's only loud when I come home or after long silences when she hears me coming. Though I have to say, if I'd not fell in love with one of my friends conures first, a grey would've been next on my list of parrots.
I'm pleased you did this Jamie. Rio my sunconure is insane!!!!! Screams all the time and always wants my attention. He was a rescue bird. He choose me as his human and could not leave him. I love him so much but man they can scream. Throw in an Ecelctus and a Gallah and you have a real bird party!!
i have a very very young GCC and i'm glad to know i'm not the only one struggling with bites!! when she gets behind my head or something it's SO hard to see what's going on or why she's biting me
We inherited a grey and we didn't think we'd ever be able to hold her and let her out of her cage because she didn't have any freedom nor any socialization in years but we've had great improvement with her. I'd pick a grey all day any day
i've got 4 green cheeks & 1 african grey. this is all fairly spot on behavior wise !

Do your RESEARCH, RESEARCH, RESEARCH before purchasing ANY bird. We had great experiences with parakeets and then two cockatiels. After the cockatiel died, we decided on a conure. The noise level was overwhelming. I hand fed the conure, but he decided that my father was HIS person. He was great company for my father who was in his 80’s. When my father passed away, we couldn’t get near the bird without ending up bloody. Wish we had the benefit of your videos at that time. We ended up surrendering the bird to a shelter out of ignorance of what to do.
That’s interesting. I’ve not long got my cockatiel and I’m three weeks he’s basically just a shoulder buddy. Not sure if he’ll get more playful after his first molt but I been looking at sun conures for the playfulness. Caique’s are too much but they look like the best players. Maybe a conure wouldn’t be the answer

My Green Cheek isn't loud at all. She does say a few words and phrases which is a great surprise. She's such a sweet and fun girl. Big personality in a small package. We adore her❤ I definitely did my homework with conures and went with Pyrrhura species. Our personalities blend well

When I worked at a pet store, they only sold conures. They were so noisy, especially if they couldn't find anyone to play with (usually it was me). And they were quite clingy but I enjoyed working with them! So rewarding
Your voice must be very bird attractive! My Quaker was so interested at your video when I play on tv! He normally doesn’t give a damn about tv.
We had both when I was a kid. The conure scream was no joke, but the conure was much more of a people bird, the African Grey preferred to do it's own thing.
I love the little zoom noise when they fly lol. Also I've always wondered how people with more than one of the same kind of bird tell them apart, it always seems impossible to me. Good to know even you sometimes make mistakes, haha
It's so cute how you can tell the birds apart by the tricks they know :D That could be a thing then, to do it on purpose :D
I have an African Grey love him to bits, he’s a very good talker. He likes to get into things he’s not aloud to lol.
I have an African gray. I love that he is so social (nosy, friendly, interested, doing activities together, talking/making noises to make contact and if he wants something etc.). He's so calm/mellow, mainly. He can be a little needy sometimes. And he will be frustrated if he wants something and it takes to long or he doesn't get it. He's also a real dust machine, with ultra fine 'talcum' powder. An air purifier with a good HEPA -filter is no luxury haha. Yes, I'm very happy I choose an African gray, It just fits! The connection is strong between us, he's more than just a pet. Laico flies fine. True, he is not an elegant flyer. Maybe it's because of the wingspan and strong muscle structure (no belly fat)?
I have trouble telling a few of my sun conures apart, too, ha!
My Dusky Conure is pretty mellow for the most part, but definitely has his "conure moments"!
My African grey Merlin is super obsessed with me and the kitchen because , he loves to guard the kitchen for some reason and one of them is he is a foodie . We have breakfast together and dinner together and I love him!

I have a 9 month old sun conure and he's a sweetheart except for the screaming when I walk away or leave the room. He will continue to call until I return to him. OMG!
They’re both awesome birds! I’ve loved African Greys for some time now due to their intelligence (I was amazed when I learned that they could actually learn the meaning of words!), and their general laidback personality. Not to mention, while I don’t mind the screeching, I’m going to be getting a dog whose ears will inevitably be far more sensitive than mine, and a less screechy bird would probably be something he’ll be grateful for!
Conures love to get involved in every thing I do,...(they can be a pest at times!). They tend to love to go under my shirt to hang out, or dangle from my shirt.

I have a green cheek conure who is *shockingly* not-screamy. The parrotlet that’s currently made of hormones? So. Loud. 😂 The conure’s alarm call, though, is super loud and SHRILL. Conures really have some pipes at any given moment they choose to showcase them!
Parrotlets can be shockingly loud. People need to stop recommending them as good apartment birds
@@AbigailM231 I think price needs to not be the top corn for whether or mot bringing an animal into your life is “worth it,” and I strongly believe if that’s your first question - getting a bird may not be the best decision for you longterm. Its a living animal that needs ongoing care, attention, and training - not a one time $500 investment in something cute.

@@AbigailM231 i don’t care if you “want a bird,” I care if you’re committed to wanting to care for, nurture, and train that bird. Its effort, not money, than you should be thinking about in regards to an animal that lives close to thirty years long when cared for properly.
@@WonderfulWorldofAwesomeness totally agree. I rescyed three birds from a bad situation and had no idea what I was getting myself into. Thankfully I’m not educated and fully willing to provide a heavy-foraging environment to work around het extra energy, but absolutely agree. People should be more carefully warned prior to be given a parrot of any kind.
We just rescued a senior sun conure and she's the sweetest most loving bird I've ever met. I think she's much easier to handle then our blue gold macaw lol
I'd love to see a comparison between the personality of an African Grey & one of the Aussie parrots (like a gallah or cocky, or lorikeet). I get the feeling the Aussie ones are all far more boisterous & outgoing & into everything, while the African Greys are much more timid & nervous about new things, is this right?

I’m very excited, I am planning on getting a green cheek conure sometime in the future.
I unfortunately can’t find a place to get a rescue so I decided on a very good breeder that lives near me, I get to pick out my baby to bond with them. I am getting a flight cage, with tons of toys and natural perches, stainless steal Bowles, and I will switch him/over to some pellets and veggies etc (I really want to get your natural feeding system)
I have one teil with basically all of that, he gets lots of out time, I respect him body, he is target trained, clicker trained, we are improving him flight skills because he was clipped before I got him (not my decision, I am letting his wings grow back) he knows how to spin, crate trained, wave, scatboard and he can pick up a ball put it in the shopping cart and push it.

@@agentt9235 Yeah...they are both awesome! I have my biases towards the African Grey due to their intelligence (they actually learn the meaning of words, and have used their vocabulary to communicate with humans, which I think is just awesome!), but Sun Conures are super beautiful and agile, and have such lively personalities! I can see it being hard to choose! At least this video, though, helped give you some ideas of what to consider for each bird. Have fun with whichever one you decide on!
I have had African grey, green cheek conure, ringneck and couple other species already on nineties. Those all have passed away.
On last autumn I had finally possibility to have a parrot again! And I chose 3 months old (young) African grey and I live in my own house and dont care a bit about noise.
They are just so clever ones and teach me at least as much as I teach them.
Conures are really funny clowns.

My 24yr old African Grey Samantha has this PIERCING smoke alarm sound and we live in an apartment. When she makes that sound I know she’s annoyed with me, and feels she isn’t getting enough attention. However, she’s quite mellow, quiet and chatty when she’s up or getting ready for night night. I love every aspect of her and wouldn’t have her any other way!
I love my african grey because as you said, she is more calm, than my BG macaw who is a energy ball :D, she is so cuddly and does a lot of funny sounds and not high annoying 'BEEEPP' like sun conures ! i would say that one of the "bad part" of greys (i had 3 greys in my life) is that they are very "exclusive birds"and harder to socialise than my macaw or my conure for example, but of course it depend of the bird :) and also she gets so easily hormonal, than sometimes i just can't hang out with her :/, but shes awesome
All of my bird research has gone around rainbow lori for the most part I'm going to be fostering a sun conure soon and I'm super excited not so excited about the screech however lol but doing my research has been fun they seem like sweet funny little birds

I had to laugh because Cressi's like "pet meeeeeeee" and Jamie's just so not fooled by the hormones.
My greys are talking and talking and barking and talking and making every noice they hear from around the garden, the donkey of the neighbours 🙉🙉🙉😅, we laugh so much with them
I have a Timneh Grey and he is amazing. I've noticed that Timnehs tent to be more nervous than Congos, but their voices tend to be a bit less robotic. My Timneh is shy with new people, but easily won over with time and treats. He only screams when something is genuinely wrong or the vacuum is near. Mostly, he loves to talk, mimic noises ranging from cute to annoying, sing random song lyrics, and get you to whistle for him. I love his mellow nature and am constantly blown away by his intelligence.
i went with a CAG. almost all the ear piercing sounds have been trained out. spring/fall horror-mones are quite mellow. no complaints but they can be a little demanding. for me it's all about training. he's not overly social but neither am i :)
I had a sun Conure and Congo grey growing up. They were best friends. That sunny lived for over 28 years
The conures are colourful ..... but would love a Grey on its own, most intelligent.
Suns are my favorite flock members. I love my macaw and all my other birds but i definitely have a special love for suns. I dont mind the noise mine arent to loud as they are always to busy to scream for long lol but i love their playfulness and sweetness. 💜 sidenote i love your hair!
No parrot is "noisy" compared to a cockatoo. Nothing compares. Macaws maybe, but cockatoos are in a class of their own. Both greys and sunnies are great companion birds...their adorability makes up for the occasional racket. It's like having a great boyfriend who burps loud from time to time.

parrots, true, but in the wild in Australia, the Channel bill cuckoos make a flock of 100 cockies seem like quiet little mice. Equally, try a whole street of trees FILLED with rainbow lorikeets in breeding season, where they decide to stay up half the night & so midnight there is noise so loud you can't have a conversation with another person unless you're at least 100 metres or so away from the closest tree - and the trees full of them will stretch for a good 50-100 metres, so there's an area of 200-300 metres, where it's impossible to even hear a human conversation & basically it just sounds like a rock concert next to the speakers in volume & continues without interruption for hours & hours (actually I have no idea how long for, no-one in their right mind would stay anywhere near it when it's in progress, would literally go deaf if you tried!)

Cockatoos are noisy and moody but they are so friendly
@@twin2482 They are extraordinarily friendly and cuddly! -until they’re not. The moodyness could make you lose thousands of dollars from stitches, ER visits and other medical bills from cockatoos.

The thing I like best about my conure is his talking abilities. The thing I like least is his biting. I would love the chance to experience other birds. That would be amazing!
I had a Quaker and a Greencheek conure and I diffidently noticed a difference in their flying. The green cheek was more agile and seemed better at swooping and making sharp turns
I love my Sun Conure, it is definitely so true that they are always getting into things,. I would love to hear some tips or advice from you - I got my bird last year around when quarantine started and I’ve been working from home. He ALWAYS wants to be out of the cage and playing around the house when he knows someone is home but is calm when we leave and loves to play with the toys in his cage. I just wonder if theres anything that can help all of that crazy energy he starts feeling when I’m home but can’t have him out due to work etc.
I volunteer with greys and my ekkies remind me a lot of greys. Very quiet and chill but hormonal. I love Greys

I have a green cheek conure, and my friend has an african gray. My green cheek is still WAY louder than her african gray. They are both seem pretty playful and a great companion!
Have you had the chance to work with Brown Head parrots? There's very few people who own them and information is scarce. I adopted a re-homed baby last summer and they are absolutly fascinating.
Definitely would go for conures! (We do love African Greys too!)
Me and my girlfriend are both big conure fans, we have three rescues. But don't have a sun conure! (yet!)
It's interesting you mention that sun conures are safer to fly than the grey! I wouldn't have thought that would be the case, them being smaller, but it's cool!
Do you think other conures are similar when it comes to free flight? I've only seen a few people actually doing it with various types of conure.
I have a grey and boy if I got lucky with her! Shes so calm and not noisy at all, she will talk and make noise but not screaming. I did rescue her a few years ago and was told she was around 27 ish...
Have a sun conure and nanday conure which are a hilarious combo together - the sun conure was more vocal at first but the nanday takes the crown after time. Different from the grey we have a red fronted macaw which I can’t say enough good things about.
I’ve fallen in love after watching a lot of your videos. I want to be well prepared for what I take on. I’m thinking a conure and found a man not far from me who breeds them. I’d be sooooo upset with myself if I bought one, took a few nips, and didn’t know how to address is immediately. The amount of videos you have is overwhelming 😅 are there any ‘go to for beginners’ ones that I should train myself with 😂
