  • Globally, tuna stocks are heavily over fished. But the fishermen in the Maldives - catching their skipjack by pole and line - are giving their skipjack tuna a brighter future.

For all you people nagging about of they should use a net, a net would catch mostly bie-catch (fish they don't want and would throw back dead) and it would destroy reefs. With the poles there is almost zero bie-catch. I know this because I live in nove-scotia and have oceans as a class on its own.

I think this is a much better method than the nets so they do not have any bie-catch so all the sharks that would have been caught if they used a net are still roaming free.

    • @doodl4898
      @doodl4898 6 лет назад +1

This method of fishing is better than nets so animals that are not targeted do not get caught in a net and usually, the animals that are not wanted that are caught in a net are out of water for too long before they throw them back, so basically they are throwing a dead carcass into the water. That is why this method is better, if you are against bie-catch.

Fish 4 ever was the canned tuna company but was only sold in the UK if you don't live there you could probably buy it on amazon or request for a local organic store to try to sell it. Maybe even get your community to sign a petition and ask for that product at most of your stores would be great for that company and the environment hope this helps

This technique was popular in the pacific islands during WWII as a way to feed the native populations on captured island using landing crafts for fishing boats and native fisherman.

  • @spy8951

This is a good educational video, I don't see why people make such a big fuss over it. It's pole and line caught which is slightly time consuming than net catching although it provides us with a better sustainable approach for future stocks. Tuna is one of the most favourite fish in the U.K, we consume over 12bn tins a year and it's got to come from somewhere like the Maldives.

Fantastic to see sustainable eco friendly fishing for a change!
This style of fishing doesn't catch unwanted catch, which gets thrown out and wasted with nett fishing. Also, net fishing nets the whole school, never to be seen again, where with poling, some fish escape and the school will grow again in numbers.
I have bought skipjack tuna before from coles and it tastes fantastic!
Keep up the great work lads,I'm happy to buy these tasty tuna off you by the bucket!

4:35 - Flattening the product with a tool but with bare hands.
4:46 - Throwing cooked tunas from one container to another using bare hands(full contact)
Sure the product could be sterilized later on, but how is this 'OPERATED TO THE STRAIGHTEST REGULATIONS'????? Sure they washed their hands, their palms don't sweat because they are Maldivians.
When I looked at the way this 'managing director' Charles Redfern walks up to his tuna(3:44), I seriously thought it was a joke. No wonder 'Fish 4 Ever' is having a hard time competing in the market.

I'm a sport fisherman, generally releasing the vast majority of what I catch but I do take some fresh fish home when I get better (and legal size) fish. I had never heard of this type of fishing and I'm glad to see it ...
I would buy this tuna if it were in a store near me and if it was in the same vicinity price-wise as the other tuna on the shelves. Given the choice and all else being equal this is what I would choose unless it turned out to be inferior quality.
So let's assume it's as good as any other tuna and have a look at price. Price is a function of the free market and competition. IF these hook-and-line Maldivians can compete with other tuna offerings then they'll sell more fish. If they charge more because of their "sustainable fishery" then they won't sell as much because they will be narrowing their market to those who are willing to pay more on ideological grounds. They would go from a main stream market to a niche market, the results are obvious. Higher price per can and fewer cans sold. It's a balancing act that all industries do to some degree so this isn't just about tuna. Tuna is just a good example.
That is still a fair market and it's a market they voluntarily choose to serve if they go that route. There are certainly people who will voluntarily pay more for fish caught in this manner. I'm not one of those people, I would buy these Maldivian fish over net-caught fish if the price were the same and the choice was available but I would not pay significantly more for these fish. That's how free market and free will operate. THIS KEEPS THE PRICE OF FOOD DOWN FOR EVERYONE.
Enter the government, any government but we'll assume it's my government. A bunch of well meaning but misguided and frankly narrow minded "tolerant" people decide that the Maldivians need to be supported because of their sustainable fishing methods. They want to encourage the Maldivian method and discourage net catching. So they lobby the government to increase tariffs on net-caught fish to bring the price of net-caught fish up to a par with a comfortable profit for hook-and-line caught fish. The overall price of fish is forced upwards accordingly. THIS RAISES THE PRICE OF FOOD FOR EVERYONE.
Generally people who ideologically pivot on ecological topics are also politically liberal. That's not to say that non-liberals do not take ecological matters into account at all, it's just that for everyone else ecology is a vital facet not an immovable fulcrum in decision making. The conundrum is that net result problem of RAISING THE PRICE OF FOOD FOR EVERYONE. It's very hard to credit people as being sincere when they claim concern for the poor as a foundational principle -- while raising food prices which causes under-nutrition and even starvation for poor people.
I'm not politicizing this topic of hook-and-line fishing by the Maldivians. I'm simply pointing out an easily observable phenomenon as it applies to this topic. We are after all talking about FOOD here. I do not see that people who style themselves as "liberal" actually live up to their own stated ideals. What I do see is that those who practice that brand of liberalism are generally not the people who will suffer the consequences of being helped by "liberals". If you can't see this then you're probably one of those people. Such people are not the preponderant majority they think themselves to be and thankfully the rest of us can offset the noise and fumes they give off by bringing some common sense to the table.

How exactly is this sustainable? They claim it's very selective, but they just pull in every tuna that bites. They say they leave the juveniles, but all of those fish looked very small. Most of those fish were under 20 pounds while they can grow to over a thousand.
