I didn't get the guitar backing at first, but it worked as I kept listening, and reminded me of a time my older brother (drummer) and I (bass guitar) were asked to accompany a small black church that was having a special event. The pastor encouraged us to play as he got into it. We looked at each other like "whaaaat??" - cause we had never done that in a church before. At one point, I dredged up part of a lick from Led Zeppelin, and my brother just shook his head. I thought it worked, but he thought we might get tossed.
There are probably tens of thousands of vids of comedians with no musicians on the set. Mr. Breuer rocks! And he is definitely not a cookie cutter comedy personality.
So, from what I’ve learned listening to comedians talk about these comedy specials, the guitars are actually a ploy to ensure their set doesn’t get cut and moved around. It ensures continuity. Actually pretty genius!

The pastor encouraged us to play as he got into it. We looked at each other like "whaaaat??" - cause we had never done that in a church before. At one point, I dredged up part of a lick from Led Zeppelin, and my brother just shook his head. I thought it worked, but he thought we might get tossed.

So, from what I’ve learned listening to comedians talk about these comedy specials, the guitars are actually a ploy to ensure their set doesn’t get cut and moved around. It ensures continuity. Actually pretty genius!

Back in the '80s, I heard a story about how some old white lady was riding the elevator in an expensive hotel. The elevator stopped at a floor and Eddie Murphy and his minders stepped in. The lady got nervous, and when Eddie said 'Hit the floor', meaning that one of his entourage should press the button for the floor he wanted, she lay face down on the ground and offered them her pocket book and jewelry. Eddie paid her hotel bill.
