    The Championship playoff final remains the richest game in world football, and the favourites to win it this year are Nottingham Forest. A European giant with as many continental crowns as Chelsea and Juventus, Forest have bene out of the Premier League for 23 years, but under Steve Cooper, they’re a team reborn, making stars of Tottenham-linked Djed Spence, Manchester United loanee James Garner, and Brennan Johnson to rise from the edge of relegation to rival Fulham and Bournemouth for automatic promotion. On today’s FD Explained, we look at Cooper’s impact, and his work developing stars like Foden, Sancho, and Smith Rowe to see how he’s got Forest flying again.

    Even after relegation under Clough in 1993 we got promoted then came 3rd in the Prem League in 1995. Scholar and Wray really broke the club after promising to spend big then forcing Dave Bassett to sell Campbell and Cooper after we'd got promoted and this led to the infamous Van Hooijdonk strike. Nigel Doughty rescued us from bankruptcy but despite twice making the play offs we were a poor side after that and shambolic under Fawaz's ownership. Amazing to see the turnaround under Cooper and hopefully we now have a long term owner and strategy.

    • @febweb17
      @febweb17 2 года назад +1

      Nigel Doughty spent a lot of time, and a small fortune, trying to resurrect the club that he loved, but to no avail. We've had some great managers at the club but also a fair share of terrible ones. David Platt helped to wreck the club and Billy Davies's ego did us no favours either. As for Chris Hughton I feel sure he'd send the players onto the field saying " Don't lose, don't lose". Whereas Cooper send them out saying "You can win this" I want to see Forest in the EPL but I hope we can keep the same players and bring in some additions who aren't just has-beens looking for a final big payday. Please let Steve Cooper have the final say on who comes and who goes.

    Nothing more annoying as a Swans fan than seeing yet another manager who we plucked from practically nowhere leave because all his players were being sold and he was being given maybe 10% of the funds to reinvest. And then he becomes a massive success elsewhere. Lets add Cooper to the list that contains Brendan Rogers, Graham Potter, Roberto Martinez and to a lesser extent Paulo Sousa and Michael Laudrup. I'm sure Russell Martin will be kicking ass for another team sooner rather than later.

    • @SonnyK248
      @SonnyK248 2 года назад

      @@jonahthrane812 For a little Championship team, Swansea do have a pretty solid identity. Ever since Martinez got the job in the mid 2000's and gave the team a continental possession based style and every guy who came after had to just keep that wheel turning. And most of those guys weren't playing that way before they arrived. Rogers' mentor when he was a coach at Chelsea was Jose Mourinho. He got the Reading job on his recommendation and got fired a few months later. Then he comes to us and two years later he's the Liverpool manager. and the two front runners for that job were Rogers and Martinez. I think managers just come in and learn the Swansea playbook and take it to a bigger team with way more ambition and thrive.

Is there enough financial strenght to boost up the squad? The players on loan, who have contributed a LOT to this team will all leave. I d love if Forest can keep Spence, Lowe, Davies and possibly Zinkernagel and make them their own. But how much would that cost? 50 millions? I sort of hope they get promoted, then relegated again, their stats suggest they'll do poorly in the Prem. But I don't want them relegated because I dislike them, really it's because even the lowest team in the Prem gets a bunch of money, more than winning the championship. So with that money, they should hopefully keep all the players they want to keep, and sign new exciting youngsters to help grow in the championship, and after a year of development, get more ready for the Prem. The parachute payments as they are called, could be instrumental if used properly.

    • @PrehistoricPro
      @PrehistoricPro 2 года назад +1

      We won't lose Johnson if we get promoted. It's very rare promoted teams lose their best players as other Prem teams would rather wait a year to see how they handle the league before fishing out. Brentford kept Toney, for instance. Norwich only sold Buendia because it's part of their financial strategy to cash in and he had already had a successful Prem season. It's also very realistic we could sign Davis and Zinckernagel on a permanent basis. Lowe has barely played this season, he's not integral to the side. Although we would definitely need to sign a left wingback, every promoted team needs to strengthen. Re-signing Garner for another season long loan isn't outside the realms of possibility either, as Man Utd will want him to get more Prem experience and he is happy at Forest. Will probably come down to whether Ten Hag thinks he's ready for their first-team or not. If not, we are likely to be first in line. Spence is the only one who we're fairly certain to lose, as signing him on a permanent basis from Middlesbrough is the only option and it's likely bigger Prem teams with deeper pockets will also be in for him.

      @fatbelly27 2 года назад

      @@PrehistoricPro Unless they get an offer they can't refuse. Newcastle have been reported as interested; also Palace, Brentford, Leicester. Anyway, it's still 50/50 whether they get promotion.

      @@fatbelly27 As if he's gonna go to an average Prem team like Palace, Brentford, or Leicester if they get promoted! 😂 They're all well run clubs who don't over pay for players either. Not really the types of teams to make irresistible offers. Newcastle are the only one of those who could/would pay silly money but they've been linked with everyone and he's unlikely to be top of their list with the funds they have.
      Of course it's no guarantee that they get promoted, but we're talking about 'if' they do? Do you understand what 'if' means?

    A lot of people including most bookmakers have been saying that Forest are favourites to win promotion to the Premier League through the EFL Championship playoffs but I have my doubts.
    Please don't get me wrong, I think that Steve Cooper has done very well to get them into 4th place and a guaranteed shot of going up.
    But I remember his time at the helm of Swansea City and at least two occasions he got them into the playoffs I think, and on each occasion he couldn't quite get the ball over the line, a lot of huffing and puffing but no end result.
    Of course it could well have been sheer bad luck, but another issue could be is that he's just not able to deal with that kind of pressure.
    I would like to see Nottingham Forest return to the Premier League I really would but I have some reservations. Plus Sheffield United are a helluva outfit to be facing right now.
    Huddersfield Town would be my other personal choice If Forest cannot do it.
