The trend of people discovering cool new RPGs that exist out there is my favorite thing that came out from this whole WotC situation. The sense of wonder on display from some people who previously didn't bother to look around the depth of the hobby is magical.

yeah, as much as it sucked to move off a comfort zone, it d be nice if we could have that approach in general with all things, without the need of some cataclysmic event or smt to work as a trigger.

That's what happens when you don't look beyond D&D. But hey. Typical players. Whenever I've suggested to my players running anything else, they instantly shut me down. BUT NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOW everyone is looking for alternatives.

    It has begin!
Congrats on the first of 99! This is such a wholesome start to the series.
I wonder if you might be able to pack like three one-page RPGs from the same author/publisher in one video just so it doesn't take you several years to get through all 99 😅

I think the point was to take a long time to reach that goal.
Would love to see some bite sized systems mixed in though.

If you like this game for the Ryuujin, try reading Fellowship! The GM isn’t the GM, they are the Overlord and make their own character (the BBEG) using their own character creation rules. The Overlord’s player creates master plans that advance as time passes unless the heroes stop them, they have an army and create mini-boss lieutenants to do their dirty work, that sort of thing.

Ryuutama is not at all what i expected from the images i had seen! which is exactly why i'm so excited to watch all your next 99 more videos. Great job Wintry!

The Ryuujin is such a clever way to blend the GM role with a players', but I gotta say... What really pops out from this to me is the artwork. It is just so delightful. Are those manga strips you highlighted in the video from the rulebook itself?

I discovered a dust covered copy of this game on a hobby shop's bookshelf a decade ago and have been in love with it ever since. Remarkable game whose ideas and mechanics I've transplanted into other games over the years. The actual book, though, is a literal pleasure to hold and peruse. Exceptional print quality.

Great choice. I found this game a while ago and added to my collection.I love this game, especially the theme of making interesting stories for a dragon. I'm glad others are discovering it! I look forward to learning about other games from you!

This sounds great, I am really excited for this series! I might have to give this one a shot, if I find the correct group for it. It really sounds special and I love to have options for a game, that is less combat and more adventure and discovery. And the Ryuujin sound like an interesting concept

It looks like an interesting kind of game, but I might have trouble convincing my group to add it to the repertoire. I do agree with the concept of not having to have epic stories born solely from heroes, and that's what I try to do in a lot of my games anyway.

Next time I get a chance to DM DnD since convincing people to learn a new system seem like a reach right now I definitely want to incorporate some of the collaborative world building and Maybe make an npc that fills a similar niche as the Ryujin

OMG I actually love the idea of that "abstract" battle map to keep track of distances.
Grid combat can be kind of fiddly, but knowing which of the three unnamed goblins the PCs are fighting is where? Which of them has how much HP? That gets a little annoying otherwise.

Gotta be honest, I didn't expect a game like Ryuutama to have a spell called "Bloodbath Blades." The Kurenai-Ryuu truly demand sacrifices.

The Ryuujin is easily the best aspect of this game for me as a long-time GM. The fact that I have a "guardian angel" character is cool on its own, but the fact that they took common GM conventions like fudging dice rolls, rewinding time, assisting the party with helpful narration, etc. and made them into game mechanics that are done by spending a resource is such a cool way to make the GM feel like they're "playing" the game too.

There's a genre of Japanese TTRPGs called "Honobono", heart-warming slice of life. Another excellent example is Golden Sky Stories, also available in an English translation through Indie Press Revolution. In it you play magical animals in a small rural Japanese town who can turn human. It is fun and extremely cute.
