  • My Opinion on Ryuutama, a condensed version of the livestream.
In Short: Ryuutama is a lovely game that hands you a simple set of tools to tell an evocative tale of hardship and victory on the open road. It is handmade for beginners, to the point where it may be a tad too "simple" for veterans.

Ending Music is: The Trail We Blaze from El Dorado
This is entirely my own opinion and nothing else, the stream can be found in the Curious Case Playlist.

I wish I could bring this game to the table; I like it so much, and I've only managed to play it *once*, all this time! This is definitely another game for the "to play solo" list, if I can't convince my players 🤨

I wanted to talk about how Ryuutama is one of my favorite games of all time, but then you had to put Marine in the video and now I'm just thinking "AHOY!"

Ryuutama has the single best GMPC system I've seen. Simply because it defines the GMPC's abilities to the players and those abilities just help or hinder the PCs. It is an elegant way to avoid GMPCs disrupting the player's struggle or pulling some Deus Ex Machina out of nowhere.

I really want to run this game and I have had zero luck finding anyone who wants to play it. I like the Yuru Camp reference.

One thing I have noticed with Ryuutama is that it really doesn't have much guidance for creating suitable challenges. It has terrain difficulties and weather modifiers but nothing really on what would be a suitable difficulty for a given level. It's the same with combat and the monsters. Monsters have a level which represents their overall power but there's no guidance on what level or number of monsters will present what level of challenge for a group of characters of a certain level. There might be random events that give conditions which the GM "may feel free to include". That's all you get. How many of these should you include? There's no indication.

I've been running this and I've done a lot of work on the world, lore and setting to give my players a great time exploring and discovering wonderful places during their travels. But I fucked up, as my players are indeed veteran tabletop players and I'm afraid they are finding the mechanics too simple to the point of boredom

Getting mad about it being “High school bullshit drama” instead of fighting giant robots, sounds like it’s the perfect Evangelion RPG.
