A bit of information in case anyone is interested (from an Austrian person) Those super talented kids are actually students of the prestigious Vienna Staatsoper Ballet school (like, the famous Vienna Opera) and if the successfully go through the very very rigorous selection and training they will be ballet dancers at some point. The debutants are also selected like in september, have to be younger than 24 and are trained by Elmayer Dance and Manners School, Mr Elmayer is basically Mr Manners in Austria, what he says goes. And the tiaras are made by Swarovski which happens to be an Austrian company.
That is incorrect, the debutants don't have to be under 24. My brother danced when he was 26. I believe the age limit is 24 or 25 for women and a few years above for men.
I was one of the debutantes this year, the age limit is 25 for everyone. And the selection process was in october and is not done by the elmayer school. It’s always a group of ppl: the choreographers and ppl representing the opera.
The kids are pretty much the most professional you can get at this age. They are not just talented but highly trained professionals (for their age). Like this is not a random elementary school dance performance 😅
@@thehuntress4303 I'm sorry to hear that... on the one hand, compared to other Western European capitals it's not that expensive. Inflation has been pretty rough in Austria, though. Hope you find a better place that suits you!

I am glad you liked this Event, Austria has still a big Ball Tradition , there is one that is a Ball for Scientists, Medicine, Pharmacie etc. and they are for everyone(who can afford the tickets((but there are cheaper and more expensive ones like yours) and the food and drink(ludicrously high prices))
@Karaltar79 I think it depends 🤔 I'll never be able to afford Opern Ball, but O attended other balls. You just need to fill a flask before entering and reuse your Ballgown... I got mine for 80 euros in a sale 7 yrs ago.
There are definitely nicer balls than the Opera Ball in Vienna (there are tons of balls between January and February in Vienna), but glad you got to experience the Viennese ball culture :)
@@garak55 Yes but because Zuckerbäckerball is very early in the Ball-season it tends to be pretty crowded as far as I know (not as crowded as the Opernball but still). I think Ball der Wiener Wirtschaft is pretty nice, because it is in the Hofburg too and not as crowded usually, because it’s later.
This happens in NewOrleans at all Debutante Balls. The ones I attend are just like this. How fortunate were you to have been there to witness such ancient rites of passage! I assure you my dear you belonged there. Don’t sell your self short. Otherwise you would have been unceremoniously ejected. That did not happen. I’m proud to say.
We have a lot of different ball's in Vienna, that I personally like more than this one. My favorite used to be Life ball, before they stopped. The founder felt like people had forgotten the reason for why they held the ball and not just another excuse for a masquerade party to get drunk at. I got to work there and then enjoy the ball for free. They always had new themes every year, and if you Google it, you'll see some amazing costumes, debutant dances, etc. Blumen ball, in English Flower ball, is also magical 😊
The waltz itself you need to do well to even apply as a debutant. You have to send a video. The opening choreography isn't practiced for a long long time. It is practiced within relative short notice before the ball. But that training is intense af, all day training, for a couple of days. There is backup dancers to replace those that possibly faint.
The Vienna opera ball is a strange thing. While it is said that you can open the ball as debutant only once in your life, I have a couple of friends, all dancing teachers, who probably opened the ball like 6 or 7 times already. What usually happens is that there are kids of well-known business men or people of culture among the debutants that barely can dance, even after an intense preparation week. These kids then usually do the walk in, get their moment on TV and then get replaced by actual dancers which do the opening for them. It is just to risky for the organizers of the Opera Ball to have debutants who can't keep up with the routine or get sick of all those spins. There is even a thing called "taxi dancers" which are volunteers that you can pick up if you want to dance in the ball room directly. Usually you tip them a bit of money (that's why they are called taxi ^^) for their service.
Before the Vienna Opera ball there is a thing called "The Magic Flute for kids". That has pretty cheap tickets (for the Vienna Operahouse) I have been going with my cousins and it is a good way to witness that
I am from Austria (born in Vienna to be exact) and you don't want to know which strict rules the debutants have to follow. You are only allowed to join at a specific age and you have to go through a though audition. Also, you mustn't participate as debutant twice. And don't get me started on how hard it is to do the dance and (even worse) stand there for a looooong time without fainting..
I live in Vienna and i never think to go. I go through Karlsplaz almost everyday and never think ‘Hey, get a standing ticket for this year.’ We’re just busy out here. 😂

Mr. Elmayer hasn’t been a part of the ball for a long time
