‎ Lizzie shows us step-by-step how to set up a simple 5-gallon planted tank for a betta fish. This island nature aquarium includes driftwood, seiryu stone, aqua soil, and live aquarium plants like cryptocoryne wendtii 'red' and bacopa. She also teaches us how to cycle the tank and minimize algae growth before adding a gorgeous blue and orange marbled betta fish.

THis is the best “set-up” video I’ve seen. Hits all the high points without getting condescending. I was looking for something like this a couple weeks ago when setting up a new tank, just to confirm my process, but could not find anything as complete - including the nitrite/nitrate acceptable range levels in order to add fish. Thank you for posting! You are wonderful!

My only question is how you changed the water without disrupting the plants etc. I've had a betta tank long and when vacuuming the water it would turn very murky and while adding new water. Sigh!! I wish Aquarium Coop products were available here in Australia, everything is perfect, well designed, works properly and reasonably priced. I tried to cut the middle out of a sponge filter, so I could get an air stone down there, but it was impossible to get down inside the thing to get everything out and the air stone still doesn't fit properly. My plain blue betta fish is happy though, living in a water jungle with snails and some guppies, in spite of being surrounded by expensive, poorly designed, crappy technology. This build was a pleasure to watch, but sadly, not a reality for everyone.

Yes, bettas need a temperature of at least 78 degrees Fahrenheit to maintain optimal health. Low temperatures will not kill them, but they won’t thrive and it can make them prone to constipation and bloat because it slows down their metabolism too much.
