From OATS Director Neill Blomkamp. First of the OFF THE GRID Cinema short films. The new game in devlopment from GUNZILLA GAMES. Brought to life by UPP VFX.
So apparently, this is a cinematic made for a game called Off The Grid, made by Gunzilla Games. It’s a 150 player PvP battle royale, but there are also PvE missions. The article I read also talks about how the narrative will be a big part of the game, somehow even in the battle royale part. Curious to see what comes of this game.
Sounds like they are spreading themselves too thin. I think blompkamp and Oats would translate best to the gaming world in a single player story/character driven campaign. I love blompcamp and all the Oats shorts but this 'trailer' is a mess.
Any battle royal game with 100 or more players is gonna be a shit show. Too many issues. They promise a lot .. just as long as you keep Buying those skins. This looks like the crew for bf2042 did this. I was waiting for the missile chick to pull out a wing suit.
But that would be too imaginative, people need more Disneyremakes remakes of animations or basically any remakes of anything which made money couple of decades back.
And Rakka, both really should be movies. Hollywood is such trash these days they have no idea what people want to see, can't end a movie if there lives depended on it. A Firebase movie and a Rakka movie would do insanely well in comparison to the normal drivel. But sadly it seems the drivel is the point. It's not what the viewers want to see anymore, it's what the funding ideology wants people to see. Sucks pretty bad.
Aye totally bro that story was mental I loved it. Same with the Rakka I so badly wanted to see more of that story but I get that Sigourney Weaver would have probably been pretty expensive to hire 🤷♂️ but it was brilliant.. Cooking with Bill is just puzzling though 😂

As much as I love Oats Studios, something feels off here. So this is a promo cinematic for a new game by Gunzilla Studios, but it almost seems like the original Oats Team is not involved or maybe a smaller team. For something that definitely has Neill's sci fi design themes incorporated in the weapons, gear and prosthetics the rest of this production just feels very "flat" to me. There's also no sign of bullet impact when he shoots him either, not even a spark. It feels like this video was about 80% done, but had to go to final render early to meet a deadline, maybe for Gamescom. I hope the development of part 2 gets more cooking time and has a bit more story context to add to part 1. I just really hope the game itself comes together well, because I'd love to see a well made Neill Blomkamp video game. And I'd love to see some actual gameplay in the near future.
Re-watch the scene, it's not very flashy but there is definitely a small bullet hole that gets added to the guy's chest in the slow-mo flip shot but I had to re watch a few times to tell it apart from a random decal/detail on the suit... I do agree it would have been nice to have a definitive headshot or some sort of spark/splatter
Agreed. While they did some great motion capture, they sure didn’t smooth out the skeleton range of motion to ensure the objects actually make contact on interactions -so many interactions have air between the avatar and the environment, or the avatar and another avatar. Armature mistakes that would be corrected by a senior director of animation -if they had one with experience on this project. Also, lots of missing textures to demonstrate: weathering, material distress, trash, skin irregularities, hair, etc. Combined with really minimal smoke, debris, particle effects leave the world feeling sterile. Finally, a lot of the head/eye movements fail to line up with what the avatar is meant to be observing, commenting on, speaking to or even just registering emotion. Dear Oats Studios and Neil Blomkamp, I love you guys so much for all you have done with Oats. I have watched some amazing never before seen content from you all. I saw concept art of soldiers helicopters in like a medieval setting from you and it would be great to see that in live action. Also where is Lima lol
While this looks super cool... There's a lot of stormtrooper aim while people are standing out in the open with the only exception being the one with a shield. Also, the flip over the armless dude at 3:16 didn't show any connecting shots despite his death? Then, either the flanking character at 3:21 forgot to shot or deciding he couldn't hit uncovered people being pulled into cover.
yeah, cool short but the combat left a lot to be desired, why shoot while standing up when you can crouch or use the perfectly good cover that's right next to them, I'd expect more from augmented soldiers with high tech limbs
I think the main problem was sizing of the main set, if they were like 100 to 200 meters apart shooting across an outdoor loading area of an airfield or factory its a different thing than if they are 40 feet from each others missing all their shots while in the open. Especially with enhanced limbs like cybernetic arms.
I would love to see a channel focused on the staff, production, the making of on the oats studios, just like corridor does with the corridor crew channel
Got excited upon seeing there was a new oats video... but ngl, something feels very off about this. My best guess is that it just didn't get the polish it deserved, which is such a shame. Cool ideas, flawless rendering... but dang the animation and even general direction work just feels rough.

Nice to see more content from Oats Studio. I wish you guys could be part of the next season of Love, Death & Robots, I feel Oat's aesthetics really match that of the show. Also please add english subtitles to these shorts, it's a little hard to make out what is being said at times.
Friggin amazing...my day is made so much better every time i get a notification of a new Oats Studio video and it never disappoints. I am super excited to see part 2 !!!
All this is certainly wonderful, but why is there no news about full-length films? Where is the Zygote? It is unfortunate that such a potential is not realized in any way. I thought short films would become a springboard for full-fledged films and series.
Hollywood is bankrupt of ideas...and unwilling to take risks with such things like zygote...that's why we keep getting remakes, prequels etc...and endless rubbish marvel stuff (I was onboard with marvel up to end game) and that's why cinema is dying
I'm sure Neill would love to make a feature length film out of a bunch of the OATS short films but nobody is financing it and the crowdfunding they did went very poorly.
@@TheMrKlump Really? That sucks; I hadn't even heard about it. Not till now, anyway, & I try to keep up with his stuff. Crowdfunding is, imho at least, a really shaky, "in the moment" kinda thing; it depends on people knowing what's up in real time, which can be tricky. People gotta eat, pay rent, med bills, etc. Sometimes it's hard to be on the ball re entertainment if that's a requirement. And folks have been burned on it a number of times. Hope whatever's next works out well, for him & us. This was a banger, if a short one.
They never made any numbers public regarding how much money they managed to get but if memory serves me right they cancelled the crowdfunding quite a while before the final date and ended up refunding all the money. This is actually one of few times I have contributed to a crowdfunded projects.
So happy to see a new short! Always love the themes and aesthetic. Although, the camera work on this sort of confused and annoyed me to the point of thinking about it more than what was happening. Super claustrophobic focus in a big, wide open space with the addition of super shaky cam, at 24fps means it's pretty much impossible to tell what's happening (which may be the intent).... Frustrating for me. :( Maybe others really enjoy watching things like that, but it's just not my jam.
As usually the render quality is top notch, but the acting leaves a lot to be desired, though I think thats all due to the mocap. When the characters are shooting there's no recoil, and with no recoil they have no impact. It really brings you out of the action when it looks like the characters are waving around toys, because well, they are, or at least the mocap actors were. Then there's cool ideas implemented poorly. "Storm" locking on a missile, then firing from behind cover is cool, but then the missile curves *away* from the target and does random swirls before heading for the target. It just doesn't make sense. Then there's the sound design, everything about the guns, from the muzzle flash, to the spent casings, and especially the way the projectiles impact the car window imply they're shooting regular gunpowder firearms. And yet the guns all have needlessly laser-y sounds, and the gun that sounds most like a regular real life firearm is the most futuristic one in the hands of energy-shield guy. At least the effects on the shield are kinda cool. Finally, the worst offender, the guy getting shot during the jumping flip. Now I don't have anything against the tactical combat frontflip, the problem is the complete lack of reaction on the guy getting shot! No blood, no sparks from the projectiles piercing the guy's weird forehead plate, nothing. No blood I might accept if this were a trailer for a T rated game, except the guy being presented as your main character literally says fuck in the first 30 seconds. This is not the Oats Studios we remember.
I'm gonna paste the comment I was typing before I saw yours : Okay but for real it's good to have more Oats content but this one felt kind of cheap compared to what you guys are capable of, the guns have no punch, animations are wonky (jump sequence particularly, from the feet close up shot, to how random guy falls into a rigid ragdoll), facial expressions are not believable (almost uncanny valley), at teh same time the particles are incredible, is it still Unity Motion capture ? I think it's starting to show its limits. Looking back at ADAM ep 3 it felt a lot more real because of how stylish everything was, here it's mostly just human heads on top of robots? idk it doesn't look that great, it feels like a good in-engine game cutschene, but if you're going to make a series of short films based on that upcoming game, maybe they deserve their own proper attention to detail.
I guess you missed the part where like none of them have non mechanical limbs so there wouldn't be blood? Are the guns supposed to be mini mag rails? Hard to say as I only noticed one gun ejecting spent casings. The missile I don't know how you can derive any of what you are seeing in the fraction of a second they show it. Again this is meant for gaming and is using futuristic weapons and bio-mech, shouldn't that be the stuff that takes you out of the action because it isn't "realistic"? But for sure that weird flip was maybe a bit over the top. This video feels like it isn't 100% finished, especially compared to some of the other stuff they have put out. Maybe some of your issues will be addressed as they finish it.
I've been waiting for a new video for a long time. And the first thing that came to my mind was if you were a game studio and you made game versions of these videos. I'm sure it would be great work.
What made Zygote, Raka and Firebase great was the story with the CGI. This is like a Michael Bay clip (all stunt, no story). Kinda week. How is it that Raka, Zygote or Firebase have not been made into a feature length film?
This was cool, very much enjoyed it but I'd still rather have a full length Firebase Mr Blomkamp. I really hope that was part of the production deal you made with Netflix.

Honestly, this scene seems like waste of potential. All this technology used for a poorly choreographed generic post-apocalypse sci-fi gunfight scene in which you can barely tell who is who.
While I'm happy to see a new upload I don't really understand why people are happy to see something not even close to what we used to see from Oats Studio. It's way below the halo series or the new aliens films and I truly hope we'll get to see more of these brillant short animations that you used to do. I love what you do but this is not representative of what the Studio was
Shame they never got the funding - bunch of people watching youtube videos and clicking like is obviously not enough for a producer to actually fund them
True. Animation is smooth for the most part but human faces look really rough, it'd be better if they had helmets instead. And in some scenes impact of the bullets is really weak/non visible at all.
"It's way below the halo series or the new aliens films" huh, a youtube video is way below the quality found in tv shows and movies, who would have thought..?
@Jey @Ghillie Hoplite I realise it needs funding, time and experience but there is no denying it isn't as good as before. a youtube video can be way better than a film. Music, sounds, story telling, graphics, real 3D models and no inexpressives dolls, camera plans etc... this short has none of that whereas their firstshort films did
I just got home from work, I'm exhausted, but when I get an Oats Studio notification I click. I've watched this channel for years and it's always an absolute visual treat and interesting concepts. Ty, may the creative gods continue to shine on you lol 💯😻💕
Obviously fine with a lot of details but wow... so slow, there is no atmosphere, too smooth. Where is the Blomkamp with rough and raw images? where is the realism? Its only my point of view... You dont agree?
Personally, I don’t think this looked good at all. I don’t know what everyone is seeing. Looks just like those bad Unreal Engine shorts Corridor makes, except those aren’t actually meant to look good. And then, reading the description and finding out this belongs to that one NFT game made the whole thing even worse.
This looks really generic and confusing, cause they all look the same, there's no context to the action, and the grayness makes it not visually pleasing. But this is promotion for an equally dull looking generic NFT battle royale game, so at least it's consistent?

And the explosions were... weak? I dunno, something about both those cars exploding (the missile and the gas tank shot) felt off
There's a chance the budget is lower because it's been a while. Let's see how the next video is once this gets more views
Was waiting for this comment. Thank you. Criticism is welcome but you've got to be a bit understanding.
It's good to see you all on my YT feed again! This was awesome!
Glad to see another upload! Can’t wait for the rest.
I've been waiting for a new video for a long time. And the first thing that came to my mind was if you were a game studio and you made game versions of these videos. I'm sure it would be great work.
That one with I think it was Dakota fanning ...with that hand monster ...screamed dead space remake
You might like Love, Death and Robots, amazing visuals and compelling stories, or the DUST short movies.
This is promoting a game. See the description.
@@skepticalbadger and not a very good looking one at that..
I absolutely love this team!! Always amazed at the lengths you push these demos!
Like a phoenix risen from its ashes, Oats Studio is back!
I am always looking forward these neat little moments where I can sit and watch some new Oats Studios releases! We need more!
Oats Studio and Neil Blomkamp ! Let the Force and Power be with all of you ! Keep it up !
Wow! That was amazing! Can’t wait for part 2!
Oh hell yes. Is this fresh hot newness from Oats!? I'm so glad I found this while in my antique Oculus Go headset. BRING IT!
Man this draws you into it, great job
My God it's been so long, video was awsome . Give us more
It is a good day now 🔥 can’t wait to see more!
I need a team like OATS to bring MY projects to life!
4/5 stars for this. the "yeah baby" and the force field shield ruined the perfect mode
lol. Kina entitled
@@lucbloom does the truth hurt you? you need a safe space? "LOL"?
Lmao.. I'm glad I'm not the only one that thought the " yeah baby" was cringe af.
@@atsekjoker Please, Mr. 20 subs, don’t hit me with the “truth”!
You have too much knowledge for me. I fold.
Oh wait, I don’t until you made the perfect incel military short film.
@@lucbloom 1st: i have a youtube channel to consume, not to provide
2nd: in your way only chefs may say food tasts bad, only shoemakers can say shoes are bad and only film makers can criticize movies. and only, if they can make it better ... go back to your safe space, internet with multiple opinions is not made for you
Amazing work. I need more
Loving those CryEngine Palms, classic
I’m shocked love, death, & robot hasn’t invited you guys to make a show for their Anthology series.
Honestly, this scene seems like waste of potential. All this technology used for a poorly choreographed generic post-apocalypse sci-fi gunfight scene in which you can barely tell who is who.
Love the ambient dredd backing sounds. For me that's oats all over 🙂
You are back. It's priceless ❤️❤️❤️
😭😭😭 Can u believe this after many years Long they returned.😭😭😭
Nice to see some new material from you guys, looking forward to a new content and maybe a longer film, series.....
Amazing!! I can't wait for part 2, 3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10 etc ❤️❤️❤️❤️
Your back!!!!!!!!!!! Thank God you guys are back at making movies and videos. I really missed your content.
While I'm happy to see a new upload I don't really understand why people are happy to see something not even close to what we used to see from Oats Studio. It's way below the halo series or the new aliens films and I truly hope we'll get to see more of these brillant short animations that you used to do. I love what you do but this is not representative of what the Studio was
Shame they never got the funding - bunch of people watching youtube videos and clicking like is obviously not enough for a producer to actually fund them
You do realise that this is not easy and it requires funding right?
Welcome back Oats! We've missed you.
I'm stoked for new content! I was starting to think It died.
Its a REAL shame this is a battle Royale and not a proper game.
You haven’t finished your previous projects (like Raka), and you already starting a new one? You are a master of procrastination!
So glad you guys are back!!
Oh heck yeah! I'm officially waiting for part 2
This is interesting. The action and shots have some rough edges but the concept is cool.
Obviously fine with a lot of details but wow... so slow, there is no atmosphere, too smooth. Where is the Blomkamp with rough and raw images? where is the realism? Its only my point of view... You dont agree?
Good to see you are back!
Came here from Netflix and Im absolutely in love with the horror. I really do hope to see more content on Netflix from you guys. Amazing quality
Yo and i took you guys for dead, still sad that the crowdfund didn´t work that i backed, but awesome to see you keep on going !!!
Bit of a step in the wrong direction. This doesn’t look good, and it just screams Call of Duty robots dunking basketballs knock-off.
Neill,my favourite director ever!
Excellent, great to see you back, hopefully we’ll get a movie done by you guys.
This is.... weird. Is this really from Mr. Blomkamp?! The characters looks very bad. In fact everything looks like 2010.
Hell yeah! Nice to see you come back!
Thank you so much i was so happy seeing this upload
Bad CGI, zero world building other than the cybernetic limbs. I feel like I just watched a cut scene from Call of Duty Advanced Warfare.
Me too, also, bad acting.
This looks really generic and confusing, cause they all look the same, there's no context to the action, and the grayness makes it not visually pleasing. But this is promotion for an equally dull looking generic NFT battle royale game, so at least it's consistent?
The stuff you guys produce is amazing.
Been waiting. Thank you!
Ummm it wasnt that good.
Agreed
This just seems very generic. Story doesn't seem particularly interesting. Doesn't feel like something that belongs to this channel sadly
I live for these types of films
About time. OATS Studio always delivers!
I wonder which Chinese mobile game sponsored this nonsense.
Yes ! Oats Studio - great stuff !!!
Talk about waking up to a surprise! This is epic
Hacía mucho no veía nada de su contenido!! La verdad muy bueno... Espero saquen alguna nueva parte de esto
