As a preschool teacher, THANK YOU for starting by talking about the readiness element! Some parents really push kids towards reading before they show any natural interest, and forcing it too early can make some children think that they hate reading! Following their interests and cues and thoughtfully selecting books are really two of the most important early steps.
Thanks Julia!!! I really appreciate this comment-- I think Tess loves reading the most and started the latest!! I'm not going to lie, I definitely worried and wish I hadn't so much! ;). MUCH LOVE! xoxo Elle
Also, as a specialist, let me tell parents who may be concerned about slow or delayed readers- kids absolutely take reading at their own pace and there’s no need to compare, but also don’t be afraid to get a specialist’s opinion. There might be something else going on, like dyslexia or a decoding issue that can be tackled, but it’d be difficult for the kiddo to go through without support.
please dont let her give this amazing habit up! my mother taught me how to read when i was very young. she would read to me and then read with me. I built this amazing habit of reading because of her and i will thank her everyday for it because books are my whole life and idk what i would do without them
I can relate to Tess so much. My parents never really taught me how to read, but I could at least pronounce like 20+ words and sentences by the beginning of 3rd grade.
The timing is so important, I learned to read at age 4, by the time I started kindergarten at age 5, I'd read the newspaper. When my son turned 5 and he wasn't willing to give reading a try, I got worried and tried to push him but didn't work. He's now 6 and he just started to get curious about reading (he's great with numbers). I need to constantly remind myself that he has his own process and rate of progress.
Hi Elle! I loved this video so much! Seeing Tess read is the sweetest thing after seeing her grow up in the past few years in your videos! Hope you all are doing well!!
Good job Tess! Reading 📚 is so important! It can open your mind & imagination to a whole new world! I was a bookworm before I had kids, now I'm too tired, & my oldest has been since she was a toddler. & that led to being an artist 🎨 This is amazing 👏🏿
Hi Linda!! Love that! And can totally relate -- I think I need to bring reading back into my own life. It's been forever since I've sat down with a book just for fun! We should start a book club, haha. xoxo Elle
You guys are great at producing, thinking, creating. It’s like unbelievable how great the kids are at acting and how the moms talk it out so nicely! 💕💕
I always enjoyed Biscuit and Mittens books, they are both really good series I definitely recommend especially for kids who enjoy animals, and still to this day I enjoy reading these books every now and then because they are cute and bring back memories.
I loved this video! Thank you so much for sharing! We don't always have to follow our own timeline. Each child is an individual, special and unique and we can meet them where they are at!
I absolutely loved to read with my parents or twin sister when I was little (and I still love reading), so this was such a nostalgia trip. I can still remember learning how to read, memorising words, and going through sentences with my parents (anyone else use the Biff, Chip and Kipper books a lot in the earlier years of school?)
Great job Tess! Keep learning. As for you Elle, I’ve been watching you since what’s up Elle when I was a little kid! Press is a little younger than me, and it feels like I kinda grew up with you guys! Keep doing what you’re doing!
My oldest daughter due to her autism and ADHD, she always had a hard time reading. She showed interest but would get frustrated with herself because she was never at the level of the kids around her. But just keep at it and find what works for your kid. I found reading for a few minutes at a time worker far better for her than trying to finish a whole book.
You are doing a wonderful job... Starting a child to early in reading is not good. By waiting till she was interested and ready for kindergarten probably mad all the difference in how fast she picked it up. Keep up the good work. Both you and your children.. 😊
My daughter was very much like Tess. She is a bit of a perfectionist and so she just did not enjoy the struggle of early reading. We definitely did some Bob books and some other early readers. I am a librarian and one thing I have noticed is that level readers can really really vary. My first readers are great because they're perfect for brand new readers but often a level one can be a challenge for new readers, some level ones are very challenging.
Ah!! You bring up such an interesting point I didn't even think about it-- it definitely had to do with being a perfectionist (oh jeez, she probably got it from me). She really didn't want to read until she knew she could do it well... And yes, I agree, you have to be ready for level 1's, they can be tricky! Thank you so much for this thoughtful note!! xoxo Elle
I remember when I was around 5-6, I would come to class excited to read and I made huge progress. I was reading lots of books and made some of my own. By the time I was 7, I was presenting up to the class and when I was 8, I would get called up to read in class because I always had so much passion and was very good at reading.
Ok! I’m just now watching this bc I was grounded bc I was sick and did not do dishes which I think is a little weird but other than that reading is the most fun subject in my eyes!! It’s just rlly fun! I love watching you!
this is amazing and i am so glad you did'nt push her and get upset, i was just like tess and it was hard though kinder and first grade. i got Diagnose dyslexia
My parents would just read to me every night before bed. They didn't try to teach me or anything, they'd just read books to me. By the time I was about 4 ½, I was reading all on my own and I LOVED reading. I turned into that bookworm kid 🤣 My writing skills left something to be desired for a while but they improved pretty quickly during primary school 😄
I have a good memory now but I was a sponge when I was a preschooler. I used to memorize books after my parents read them to me once and I said what I memorized while looking at the words. That’s pretty much how I learned lol.
Also I taught my son to read by using the LeapFrog LeapReader. It's a little toy pen with special books that help sound out the different letters and blends. SO worth it!
Just want to add a quick note about reading; if you’re child still doesn’t really like to thought of reading when they are a bit older or they are still having a bit of a hard time with some words after repeating them after quite a bit. Make sure to monitor them as they could be dyslexic (these are the signs my parents noticed when I was younger). And don’t worry dyslexia is not as scary is it might sound/seem I promise as someone with dyslexia. But the earlier you can catch some signs of it the better! Again not here to be a downer or to scare anyone just thought this might be helpful to some.
OMG! YESSS! I love how you support giving your child time. When I was smaller, I learned how to read very quickly, yet I never really enjoyed it. I wish that I learned it this way 😀
when I was little this was the same for me. I did not like to read until I found Pete the cat and fancy nancy these along with some others help me learn that reading could be fun. I remember the day the crayons quit, it was my favorite book ever. These books were still hard for me to read though and I hatted when someone corrected me on a word, but at the same time I wish that people just told me what it was on some other words, and you can't ever tell witch one it is. This may make it hard for you as a parent, but Tess is a grate kid and very smart just like you so I hope you both will figure it out. best wishes!
We are huge Pete the Cat fans. They even do a great episode on going back to school which we plan to rewatch before the switch from kindergarten to 1st grade. I swear teachers are wizards. He went from writing a bit and knowing a few words to reading books and typing funny sentences on signs in minecraft.
Ooooh! I've got to watch that one!! We never did Pete for my first 2 kids, and they really are such adorable books. I'm glad I grabbed one on a whim! That's so funny about the Minecraft, sounds like Ford, ha. xoxo Elle
We used a website called Starfall which I loved and that got me reading my first book the day after my fourth birthday, but I’m also always in the gifted programs, so most won’t read around that age- wait until your kid is ready folks
Thx so much for this! I love rewatching this, have been watching this since I was a kid This video is perfect for me to teach my baby sister cause we wants to read but she can’t talk that much and she only reads certain books

My kid reading journey - only child, during pandemic got limited 1 hr TV. I started bringing different books from the library . The kid getting bored picked one and never stopped reading. Got through 2 summer reading challenge. 📚 😊
That's AMAZING!!!! We definitely needed the peer pressure of Kindergarten... but limiting the TV is so clutch... if they are bored enough, right? Ha. Thanks so much for watching! xoxo Elle

FIRST! I love you Elle I learned to read all by myself so I love how Tess is growing up so fast! Edit: when I saw I was first so I’m very sorry if I’m not first
Okay when I was 9 I could barely read a second grade book I was in third grade you have to understand Tess was a better reader than me when she was five I'm 11 now and I can finally read at 5th grade level but more of a fourth grade level but I'm still going considerate a fifth grade level but good job with teaching your child it's not because I didn't want to read it's just because I couldn't my office went ADHD affected my reading so much that I basically couldn't do it at all so I got this amazing teacher named Mrs Sullivan she helped me so much also I love your videos also I think what would be a good book for Tess is dog man one two and three they're hard covers so they're a little bit more expensive but I think it would be worth it it's way introduced her to a lot longer words but it's still at that level where they can read most of the book without any help
As a British kid we had ‘biff, chip and kipper’ books that were great and had so many levels all the way up to almost full books so if you can find them they’re amazing to read

Omg I remember those
Yay tess good job im so proud
