Yeah, I've always had a personal disinterest in male dolls. Even as a young boy, I just didn't connect with them. They were all either blank love interests, or too... stereotypically jocky and masculine. Which is so weird when you think about it. If they wanted to get boys to buy dolls, why wouldn't they represent the boys who are buying dolls... i.e. the more effeminate ones?
This is one of the reasons I’ve loved the lol omg boys that have come out so far, because they have actually dared to give nice fashions with cool prints or colors, wacky hair, and add jewelry accessories for the boys. I still feel like they’re only scratching the surface, but it’s a step in the right direction. I think the question of “why wouldn’t they make the boy dolls represent the boys who would buy dolls so they can market them to them” all comes back to the fact that they simply weren’t try to market to boys at all. The doll industry has been heavily entrenched in gendered marketing for decades now, and it is only recently we’ve seen any cracks in that as more millennial parents have started to reject that as the basis for how they buy toys for their kids. Boy dolls were never made to sell to boys, and have mostly existed to be an accessory to girl dolls for girls to play with, and even then there has been an overall lack of creativity in how to make their designs appealing to girls. After all, would you rather get a boring, blandly dressed Ken doll or spend the same money to get another sparkly poofy glitter Barbie when mom says you get to pick one toy from the isle? 😂

Seriously! Now as a customizer I love to customize male dolls because most of the guys have a very one note style that makes them feel more like a good starting point for your ideas. I hate adding to criticism of fashion dolls that but I would love there to be room for interesting boys to exist in the fashion doll world. Not just in origin because some have some interesting family dynamics and origin stories but their design, their interest in fashion and hobbies on the same level of the girl dolls that would translate to the play line dolls would be really cool. For some of them I feel like their personality doesn’t really read in their outfits after watching the show, in the girls it does but in the boys it’s a bit hit or miss because monster high is so “on the nose” lol it normally is like getting hit in the face with a shovel what their personality is and I like that about them!
Drawing on a grey background should help you with that issue you had with the colors looking too bright. It's also better for your eyes, too. Great job on the redesigns btw!
i’m so glad you mentioned how important ghoulia is to autistic people! reading her diaries felt insanely personal. even if lore wise she’s “speaking another language” a lot of autistic authors have used that as a metaphor for how autistic people have different communication styles and body language. i’m also a scene kid so i LOVED her whole section of the video

I adore the Cleo hair color change, it just suits her with the gold and lapis lazuli colors of her clothes which just look better with her pale sandy blonde... Also, love the Gil take out. He was by far the most boring monster like... I remember when they introduced Finnegan and I was like: "That should have been Lagoona's boyfriend." like... he does not even have a style of clothes like Deuce's scene or Clawd's 70's style.
Yes I never thought of that but yes her and finnegan wake would be a great couple because her still being with Gil sends the message that you should stay in a relationship like theirs even if it’s stressful and makes you unhappy
Something that I think would be cool in Cleo's design is her Boo York makeup. For those who don't know her eyeliner is inspired by a symbol named eye of Horus. According to Google it represents strength, safety, health, etc. I'm a huge mythology nerd and I remember seeing this symbol in a book that I read about Egyptian mythology. I think it would be really cool if she incorporated some Egyptian symbols on her makeup depending on the situation.
Your art and redesigns are amazing. I especially love the direction you took with Ghoulia! As an autistic girl, I really resonated with Ghoulia. She and Lagoona are still my favorites to this day. ❤️🩹

I feel like I should have known Lagoona was your favorite, but it wasn't until you mentioned H2O that I made the connection. I love the colors you picked!! The OG art you have on 5:34, I can tell they want aqua, but the solid black and the blue water in the purse are just... Yours works much more nicely. :) If I were doing the Cleo design, I would have gone all-out with the Egypt references. Lot of great history there, and if she's dating a Greek god, all the better. I love how you changed her nose shape and gave her some more intricate patterns. You're making me want to go at it myself, although I don't know nearly any MH lore. I do like her darker colors in the original design and would probably keep the dark hair - it's part of the Egyptian revival vibe. I would probably be designing something to highlight that contrast and let her kohl stand out. Sheer clothes are VERY legit for her, although for that same reason, I would probably put wrapping around her chest lol. But I wouldn't want to imply ace bandages on the chest, which is how that design decision would read. Hmm. Honestly, I would probably approach this design by doing one design looking at all her monster high looks, then one design that's historically accurate (more or less, or at least with a bunch of Legit Easter Eggs), and then do a third pass to try to merge the two with parts I liked from both. I will say though, I personally don't like heels on dolls or on my own feet... so sadly... I would not have those, which would get me kicked out of this MH Redesign Club I'm making up in my head. For the last few weeks I’ve been creating my own dolls, from toes to head to clothes to personalities. I am gonna have an entire book of characters, their stories and everything. Your videos are the first ones I watched that restarted my interest and love of dolls. Love the designs you went with! Definitely a redesign I could picture on shelves. One thing about Deuce that bothered me was they said he loved cooking and his Greek heritage, but never really did anything with it as far as outfits.
I love the idea of leaning into wigs for Cleo. Why not give her a unique feature where she’s sort of like the Avery doll from rainbow high? She could come with a few different wigs and really branch out as an experimental style who is constantly changing things up in her fashions and color schemes.
Your Cleo redesign in particular is sooooo gorgeous! The colours are beautiful and I can’t believe I’m saying this I prefer it to the original, I would’ve preferred if her hair was still kept black but oh my Ra I just love the palette and style- when I first saw the lineart I wasn’t too excited but the result is so beautiful. *** the blonde hair looks gorg I still think it looks amazing but I think her black hair is just too iconic I also love your Ghoulia redesign! I love the brain beanie, the leg warmers as ode to the pants, the new shape and colour of the hair, the mismatched socks. The only thing that throws it off is the colour palette- just feels awkward. But I love her fashion! The overalls are so fun lol.
usually i hate bucket hats, but lagoona makes it work so well!! and cleo's dress too, the dress would probably be a bit ugly and dated on a real person, but cleo makes it look like a royal gown. and im so obsessed with your idea for cleos character arc. and ghoulia looks so adorable!!!! she reminds me a lot of how i dressed in high school lol

I was never in love with lagoona original design, its not bad but I never got why so many of my friends were in love with her, but damn I LOVED your redesign!! she's absolutely adorable and I can totally see this as an actual line doll
Lagoona, loved her for ages. I always believed she was based on Sandy from Grease. Played by Olivia Newton John, an iconic Australian Ambassador. Your take on small Jean shorts and a small crop over surfing suit, very much the norm on the Sunshine Coast, Queensland. In the 80’s a lot of girls were encouraged by parents to be self sufficient. Equality was a big issue being addressed, and a great structure of individuality was taught in schools. As an exchange student that has a lot of self assurance she could very easily become a councillor helping others find and express themselves.

i LOVE how you did lagoona. she was my favorite growing up and i was for sure an h20 just add water fan lol the style you went with is so perfectly matching for her in a way i feel like a lot of people dont quite consider when they redesign her (no shade to other redesigns though theyre all gorgeous!!!)

I think instead of giving Cleo blonde hair or multiple wigs I’d give her short hair like what you see in a lot of Egyptian art, perhaps braided even (if possible) I think her look was supposed to be celebrity chic with a lot of moderness with her very Egyptian inspired look. I think I’d make her a bit darker too

Cleo came out gorgeous 😍 her style I could see her being more of that sleek, minimalist fashion. Basically how Kanye styled Kim when he was using her to model his clothing line lol. So her outfits although might come off simple but her accessorizing would sell it. Gaudy gold jewelry with lots of emeralds and lapises 🥰 and with wigs I could see her doing a long, dark 30in one day a chic bob the next
Obsessed with your Ghoulia. She's my favorite and I love your emphasis on comfort in her outfit. It really feels realistic for a character like her but also looks cute and aesthetically pleasing!

6:25 - In general, both designs are not much to my taste, but I will give preference to You'res. I really like the ponytails, the bangs, the tracksuit, the decoration on the belt and the jacket (?), as well as the complexity of the shoes, but there seems to be not enough details. Probably just shadows. And I generally like the mischievous pose 👍 11:20 - You know.. She looks so much like Louis Griffin xD the new design turned out .. Attractive, like a gyaru, I think 🤔 Looks nice, but here I will give my vote to the original, I love the balanced suit and these golden bandages so much.. Well, the "standard" hairstyle of the Egyptian empress 15:50 - Her design turned out to be really stylish and the jacket is not so eyesore with its sharp stripes. She looks so cuuuute now, (and good combination of gloomy red and pastel blue) although the original also has something.. Glamour, maybe. I love this one the most [:

I love lagoona because I think of her as the down to earth one that seems like she has her shit together (compared to the other characters) kinda like applejack from mlp or Miriam from turning red
My only complaint is Ghoulia's hair. The color is a good color that I would keep, and so is her hairstyle. I would just do more with it like adding patterns to her hair, at least some type of streaks in her hair. Big loud crazy patterned hair is a big part of scene culture, and in the OG monster high franchise, everybody had some signature type of hair that always included streaks, I don't recall anybody without at least some streaks in their hair. Though this is a reboot, incorporating everything from the OG part of the franchise would defeat the purpose of it being a reboot. So I wouldn't care at all if not every redesign has streaks in their hair, I would just at least have Ghoulia have them because her style
Ok new HC that was sparked watching this: Duce and Cleo are in a poly relationship (fits with their heritage) and Ghoulia is Cleo's gf, also Ghoulia is ace. Also also Duce and Ghoulia are bros who chill and play video games together (Duce is so jealous of her comic collection), and like to watch their sparkly gf shop for them
I would love a biker inspired clawdeen. Basically a lot of chains jeans and jacket. I hope they let Laura baylee voice draculaura she basically played her in critical role campaign 2. Also i hope they make cleo and ghoulia a couple. Ghoulia was my favorite i hope she gets some cosplay options. Ghoulia reminded me so much of penlopy from criminal minds. I tried to do a frankie inspired by ironman that sucked lol. I like seeing another artists methodology. And like most reboots im pessimistic.
Though I like that you gave her brown/amber eyes, I personally find the hair color change for cleo too dramatic- I find her original dark hair color presents a nice contrast against the bright blues and beige of her clothes, while also allowing a character of color to have both brown skin and dark hair (I think she's the only middle eastern/north African character in fashion dolls that I've seen). Maybe if you'd make her hair like nefera- where it's straight up blue, with black/dark brown and gold streaks, plus the brown eyes then it'd look better.

I wonder if there will ever be a "next generation" type reboot with different characters going to MH and cameos from the original students, I'd probably have most of my ideas closer to that
I love all of them! I really like that you want to lean more into Ghoulia being neurodivergent/autistic. I think that a really good way of doing that would be to add in fidget jewelry/accessories. The character N from pokemon has a lot in his design (he’s not canonically neurodivergent, but is often head cannoned as). You could also look at this Etsy seller called Divergent Minds Club that sells fidget jewelry for inspiration if you want. (although their store was on break last time I checked) I think it would be a great way to incorporate representation as a physical thing that could be part of her outfit. (Also I’m autistic and have adhd, not just talking out of my *ss, even though fidget toys have become more mainstream they are super useful, I carry one with me everyday and subtle ones like jewelry are super nice to have)

She might not have changed much from the original aesthetic, but that blue dress is so so cute!
I love the idea of leaning into wigs for Cleo. Why not give her a unique feature where she’s sort of like the Avery doll from rainbow high? She could come with a few different wigs and really branch out as an experimental style who is constantly changing things up in her fashions and color schemes.
Her second wig should be her old hair colors
Your Cleo redesign in particular is sooooo gorgeous! The colours are beautiful and I can’t believe I’m saying this I prefer it to the original, I would’ve preferred if her hair was still kept black but oh my Ra I just love the palette and style- when I first saw the lineart I wasn’t too excited but the result is so beautiful.

I also love your Ghoulia redesign! I love the brain beanie, the leg warmers as ode to the pants, the new shape and colour of the hair, the mismatched socks. The only thing that throws it off is the colour palette- just feels awkward. But I love her fashion! The overalls are so fun lol.
usually i hate bucket hats, but lagoona makes it work so well!! and cleo's dress too, the dress would probably be a bit ugly and dated on a real person, but cleo makes it look like a royal gown. and im so obsessed with your idea for cleos character arc. and ghoulia looks so adorable!!!! she reminds me a lot of how i dressed in high school lol
I love how you redesigned Ghoulia🖤She’s my favorite character and too many of her outfits dulled down her monster elements so I’m glad to see the bones, blood, and brain look more prominent.
I was never in love with lagoona original design, its not bad but I never got why so many of my friends were in love with her, but damn I LOVED your redesign!! she's absolutely adorable and I can totally see this as an actual line doll

Lagoona, loved her for ages. I always believed she was based on Sandy from Grease. Played by Olivia Newton John, an iconic Australian Ambassador. Your take on small Jean shorts and a small crop over surfing suit, very much the norm on the Sunshine Coast, Queensland.
In the 80’s a lot of girls were encouraged by parents to be self sufficient. Equality was a big issue being addressed, and a great structure of individuality was taught in schools. As an exchange student that has a lot of self assurance she could very easily become a councillor helping others find and express themselves.

I think instead of giving Cleo blonde hair or multiple wigs I’d give her short hair like what you see in a lot of Egyptian art, perhaps braided even (if possible) I think her look was supposed to be celebrity chic with a lot of moderness with her very Egyptian inspired look. I think I’d make her a bit darker too

Cleo came out gorgeous 😍 her style I could see her being more of that sleek, minimalist fashion. Basically how Kanye styled Kim when he was using her to model his clothing line lol. So her outfits although might come off simple but her accessorizing would sell it. Gaudy gold jewelry with lots of emeralds and lapises 🥰 and with wigs I could see her doing a long, dark 30in one day a chic bob the next

6:25 - In general, both designs are not much to my taste, but I will give preference to You'res. I really like the ponytails, the bangs, the tracksuit, the decoration on the belt and the jacket (?), as well as the complexity of the shoes, but there seems to be not enough details. Probably just shadows. And I generally like the mischievous pose 👍

the new design turned out .. Attractive, like a gyaru, I think 🤔 Looks nice, but here I will give my vote to the original, I love the balanced suit and these golden bandages so much.. Well, the "standard" hairstyle of the Egyptian empress
15:50 - Her design turned out to be really stylish and the jacket is not so eyesore with its sharp stripes. She looks so cuuuute now, (and good combination of gloomy red and pastel blue) although the original also has something.. Glamour, maybe. I love this one the most [:

i loooove ghoulia! she and abbey have always resonated with me as an autistic girl. I also struggled with redesigning Cleo when i did some she's tricky
I love lagoona because I think of her as the down to earth one that seems like she has her shit together (compared to the other characters) kinda like applejack from mlp or Miriam from turning red
My only complaint is Ghoulia's hair. The color is a good color that I would keep, and so is her hairstyle. I would just do more with it like adding patterns to her hair, at least some type of streaks in her hair. Big loud crazy patterned hair is a big part of scene culture, and in the OG monster high franchise, everybody had some signature type of hair that always included streaks, I don't recall anybody without at least some streaks in their hair. Though this is a reboot, incorporating everything from the OG part of the franchise would defeat the purpose of it being a reboot. So I wouldn't care at all if not every redesign has streaks in their hair, I would just at least have Ghoulia have them because her style

Ok new HC that was sparked watching this: Duce and Cleo are in a poly relationship (fits with their heritage) and Ghoulia is Cleo's gf, also Ghoulia is ace. Also also Duce and Ghoulia are bros who chill and play video games together (Duce is so jealous of her comic collection), and like to watch their sparkly gf shop for them

I would love a biker inspired clawdeen. Basically a lot of chains jeans and jacket. I hope they let Laura baylee voice draculaura she basically played her in critical role campaign 2. Also i hope they make cleo and ghoulia a couple. Ghoulia was my favorite i hope she gets some cosplay options. Ghoulia reminded me so much of penlopy from criminal minds. I tried to do a frankie inspired by ironman that sucked lol. I like seeing another artists methodology. And like most reboots im pessimistic.

Though I like that you gave her brown/amber eyes, I personally find the hair color change for cleo too dramatic- I find her original dark hair color presents a nice contrast against the bright blues and beige of her clothes, while also allowing a character of color to have both brown skin and dark hair (I think she's the only middle eastern/north African character in fashion dolls that I've seen). Maybe if you'd make her hair like nefera- where it's straight up blue, with black/dark brown and gold streaks, plus the brown eyes then it'd look better.

I use clear tiny hair ties to keep Lagoona's fins on! They've had to be replaced because of plastic rot over time.

I love all of them! I really like that you want to lean more into Ghoulia being neurodivergent/autistic. I think that a really good way of doing that would be to add in fidget jewelry/accessories. The character N from pokemon has a lot in his design (he’s not canonically neurodivergent, but is often head cannoned as). You could also look at this Etsy seller called Divergent Minds Club that sells fidget jewelry for inspiration if you want. (although their store was on break last time I checked) I think it would be a great way to incorporate representation as a physical thing that could be part of her outfit.
(Also I’m autistic and have adhd, not just talking out of my *ss, even though fidget toys have become more mainstream they are super useful, I carry one with me everyday and subtle ones like jewelry are super nice to have)
