Richter was a musician of genius. One may not neccessarily understand something he does, initially; but, later, one thinks, ah, yes, now I see what he is getting at. There is a divine simplicity about his playing and, even, a sort of ingenuousness. He makes the difficult and complex seem simple and transparent. There was, and is, nobody like him. I was privileged to hear him live once at the RFH and will never forget the sheer perfection of the sound he extracted from the instrument.
He is the only musician that we have recordings of that I have ever referred to as a 'genius' as his piano playing has left me lost for alternative words to describe just how good he is. Stunning technique and control over tone, combined with a supreme artistic vision embedded in simplicity of approach.
The keyboard suites by Handel, here presented in the magistral rendering of Sviatoslav Richter, present a suggestive relationship to those of Bach. This should come as no surprise. After all, JS Bach and Handel were close contemporaries. Handel was born a German and trained and worked in Germany for a significant period before moving to London. Moreover, Handel keyboard works were less known than his orchestral and choral works such as Messiah or Wassermusik. Handel suites include preludes and fugues, highly complex and beautiful, reminding of Bach WTK. Handel was a respected organist master as well. It has been said that his productivity exceeded that of Bach. Many thanks Classical Music for posting this monumental and less known work

Thank you ALL for commenting on my humble observation. For me, the "aha" moment to understand Richter's uniqueness was the first movement of Schubert's sonata D.894 (ruclips.net/video/E7_OW2__ZR0/видео.html). It is a very profound interpretation and completely unique. Please, compare with other genius piano interpretations to feel the difference. Listen to the tempo and phrasing of the first couple of bars. If there was a Nobel prize for music, this interpretation should have won it. The lyricism of Richter's interpretation for me is quite moving. Of course, personal interpretations and differences in preferences make classical music so great and thriving after centuries of playing the same works over and over again. By the way, Richter admitted in an interview about his special connection with Schuber's music and specifically this sonata (look from 15:10 onward in ruclips.net/video/iVhxqEN9j7k/видео.html). Therefore, I assume it could be a quintessential example of his mastery.
This recording has been a total revelation to me. Richter's playing is so mesmerising and beautiful. I can imagine him with a glass of French wine after such a wonderful and very intimate evening in France. Definitely Desert Island Disc stuff.
Marvelous, and criminally underplayed/under-recorded pieces! Richter’s performance brings out the undulating melodies and astounding poetic nature of Handel’s masterful compositions. Thanks!
Yes. Who is Haendel? Listen up:"Armida abbandonata" HWV 105 by Haendel (Janet Baker, arr. Leppard). Pay attention to the Recitative: 3. Recitative: "Per te mi struggo, infido" here at 9:16 (Bach) and 10:50 (Telemann) we hear the 1707 paradigm - the "musical gene" - which will later be Bach, Telemann.
Magical! Therapeutic (helped me to get through some tough times); brilliant music and playing. Thanks for posting and thanks MAESTRO Richter and Maestro Handel. What a contribution to civilization!
Hit on this accidentally and I can’t stop listening. Wonderful music unexpectedly played by of the very greatest piano artists of the 20th century. What a wonderful way to end the day. Thanks and thanks again!

Like the Bach WTC, these works by Handel are given a superb interpretation by the amazing Sviatoslav Richter...Both have given me infinite enjoyment throughout the years and i thank you for posting them on you tube!!!
Another treasure of immortal music, brought to life by the pianistic genius of Richter…..Among the many sublime moments in this collection I must mention his mesmerizing rendition of the slow Air in the d minor suite.
Hmmm. Yes, the pure and wonderful Richter. One of Ukraine's great gifts to the world. What could that great man be thinking as he looks down on us today?
King Georg III used to play some Haendel on his harpsicord, when the porphyria let him enough tranquility. When I listen these Sonatas, I always remember him with profound emotion
They no longer make such pianos. Nor Yamaha, nor others. It is too expensive. They take money for brand, but materials, execution - all is far more primitive and worse than 50 years ago.
in light of virtuosity, interpretation, and repertoire, richter is perhaps the greatest pianist of all time. through the clip, i'm again reconfirmed of it. thx for sharing!
Usually I don't listen to Händel. I love Richter. The combination Richter and Händel is unexpected and I couldn't believe that Richter bother to spend time on this but I'm so glad he did. This recording means lots to me, it brings calm, comfort, lust for life and a feeling that things don't have to be complicated and one of a kind to be beautiful, sometimes you wake up, open your eyes, it's sunshine, it must be spring because I hear lots of birds, it's as simple as that and Richter together with Händel put a precise finger on that.
What do you mean by " ....Richter bother to spend time on this" ? I usually don't comment but this is way too disturbing observation from you. Why am I bother spending time with this anyway? :D
@@arpadkato2020 I am not sure I understood your question. I tried to expose my own negative prejudice about Händel. No less. Since I love Richter I took my time to listen to this recording and was deeply seduced. I have listened passionately to this recording many times, mostly during spring when life wakes up, the music is full of sparkling life in a subtle way. Still I am not sure what you thought I tried to express.
@@franr.3691 I suggest you read my comment to A.K above as an answer to your own input coloured in your special way. Sometimes you have to read between the lines and understand what is trying to be expressed. About Bach, if I'm a fan as you choose to express it. Of course I listen to Bach sometimes, some of it is impossible not to respect, admire and love, but generally speaking, he's actually not my cup of tea. My emphasis in classical music is more modern, late romantic era to the postmodern. Works I also love, written during the romantic era, as two examples, are the grosse fuge by Beethoven and Liszt's famous work in b minor, works very far from both Bach and Beethoven. But I dearly respect a good craftmanship, if I can express it like that, never mind what era, and composer, and a superb performance fills the sails fully.
Thanks to this upload from CMRR I discovered these suites for clavier from Handel played by the greatest maestro Richter. What a revelation! What sheer beauty and soul comforting music Richter can create as nobody else. Technically perfect but maybe more important a master of soulful play full of emotions! This is why so many people love Sviatoslav Richter! Also hat off for Händel for these wonderful compositions, which are easier to listen to and therefore maybe more beautiful than some of the work o Bach.
I love this wonderful amazing music! What a gems these keyboard suites of Handel! But it is due to the unique qualities of the MAESTRO Sviatoslav Richter that they go straight to your heart. He is able like no one else to play like a poet or a painter, whereas a lot of other players play more technical and mechanical. With Richter even Bach becomes a pleasure to listen to. You can see the master in action thanks to an upload of Ola Lokken. It is the 5th part of the Suite no 3.
Brilliant playing. CMRR deserve our heartfelt thanks for their superb selection of repertoire and for their skilled remastering. What they choose to upload for us to enjoy always sets a great standard.
I got comfortable impression. My feathery heart calm down. The performance is lively and crisp ,and it is a wonderful technique. The sound quality is powerful and the ability is outstanding. Greetings from Japan. Sayonara!

Bach was my favourite until listening to these. They are filled with personality and charm, unlike Bach's similar compositions. I adhore Bach, but Handel is my favourite!
Please consider adding an "English" (per google) version of L Gerber's comments above: It was at first an indecisive, mysterious presence, whose recordings of mediocre sound from Russia were only vaguely recorded. But as his recordings accumulated, including a dazzling Schumann disc from Prague and a titanic version of Mussorgsky's '' Paintings of an Exhibition '' in Sofia, the obvious became obvious and the fans of piano soon convinced the West that Sviatoslav Richter (1915-1997) was one of the great pianists of his time or of any era. This perception became a certainty hardly had Richter started to occur outside the Soviet bloc, with a series of concerts in the United States in 1960. For those who could attend, it was a revelation. At his death, Richter left behind a considerable discography. No doubt he was the pianist with the most extensive repertoire. He greatly preferred live performances to studio recordings, and many of his best engravings were made in concert. The 1979 Tours Festival was one of Richter's most remarkable projects, a typical example of his relentless exploration of the keyboard repertoire. Richter and pianist Andrei Gavrilov collaborated on an integral Handel website. A video of these concerts shows the pianists turning each other's pages .. Leslie Gerber

These splendid suites for keyboard were written two or three decades before those by Bach. Why are they less known? Perhaps England was too far away from continental Europe? After all, Handel was hidden there until the Elector of Saxony (Handel former employer) came to the British Islands as King George! The story goes that Handel was terrified and to recover the new King's favor composed the Water Music and the Fireworks suite. The keyboard suites are certainly masterworks. They deserve being better known. This Sviatoslav Richter splendid rendering was a deserved homage.

Surely grand MAESTRO Haendel played by maestro Richter.
Immense Richter, merci pour tout !
What joy. You do a worldwide service through your posting. God be with you.
Hit on this accidentally and I can’t stop listening. Wonderful music unexpectedly played by of the very greatest piano artists of the 20th century. What a wonderful way to end the day. Thanks and thanks again!
Enjoy :-)
Genio Haendel!!!! Genio Richter!!!!! Gracias Genios!!!!!
Emil Gilels =The KING OF THE PIANO! Grigory Sokolov= THE TITAN OF THE PIANO THE GIANT OF THE PIANO! Artur Rubinstein=THE GOD! Who is The Greatest! The TITAN? The KING? The GOD?
The incredible genius of Richter...!! This is sublime ....!!
Like the Bach WTC, these works by Handel are given a superb interpretation by the amazing Sviatoslav Richter...Both have given me infinite enjoyment throughout the years and i thank you for posting them on you tube!!!
The really interesting thing is that by 1979 Richter was well beyond his prime.
Another treasure of immortal music, brought to life by the pianistic genius of Richter…..Among the many sublime moments in this collection I must mention his mesmerizing rendition of the slow Air in the d minor suite.
This is up my street, the sound feels genuine and complete for me emotionally,
Hmmm. Yes, the pure and wonderful Richter. One of Ukraine's great gifts to the world. What could that great man be thinking as he looks down on us today?
Emocionante! Viva S. Richter!
King Georg III used to play some Haendel on his harpsicord, when the porphyria let him enough tranquility. When I listen these Sonatas, I always remember him with profound emotion
Za slušanje bez daha. Sublime.
The play of Mr. Richter is ripe and mellow and to the point ...
I love sound of this piano, so clear and bright and cheery!
They no longer make such pianos. Nor Yamaha, nor others. It is too expensive. They take money for brand, but materials, execution - all is far more primitive and worse than 50 years ago.
Exactly right! I especially adore the III.Allemande : Allegro moderato (53:03)
IV.Courante : Allegro (55:55) V.Gigue : Presto (57:49)
Crystal sounds ))
Finalmente su RUclips! Perfetto Handel, e peretto Richter. Una coppia perfetta! Il mio CD preferito per sempre! :)
Masterpieces plaid by a great piano Master
in light of virtuosity, interpretation, and repertoire, richter is perhaps the greatest pianist of all time. through the clip, i'm again reconfirmed of it. thx for sharing!
First time I listen to these... they are wonderful! fantastic discovery for me. Thanks a lot for sharing!
Absolutely breath taking. Handel is largely ignored. This performance should be a source of inspiration to many pianists.
Still I am not sure what you thought I tried to express.
... Bother to spend in this? 🤦🏻♂️What a dumb jajajaja This is one of the best music i have ever heard. Fuck yourself Bach's fan.
@@franr.3691 It's a very good music, but is more simple like, say, Skriabin, Rachmaninov, etc (and less demanding technically for Richter)
5!
This is a wonderful version. No one here seems to have commented on Eric Heidsieck's recording which is also wonderfully sublime.
Siamo nell'empireo, paradisiaco cielo degli interpreti assoluti.
So beautiful..heavenly!!!
Never, never !!!!!!!
oui, never ! !
Maravilhoso Handel! Maravilhoso Richter!!!!!!!❤❤❤❤❤️❤️
You can see the master in action thanks
to an upload of Ola Lokken. It is the 5th part of the Suite no 3.
And also the sixth part (Presto). It is really amazing! What an atmosphere and location. The people who were there are really privileged!
Thanks for sharing))
Brilliant playing. CMRR deserve our heartfelt thanks for their superb selection of repertoire and for their skilled remastering. What they choose to upload for us to enjoy always sets a great standard.
Only Richters amazing pianism and extraordinary musical insight can make the piano sound a perfectly cast instrument for Handel.
Andrei Gravilov also interprets these suites wonderfully. For me however Richter is at the very summit here.
Has this man played everything?! He's everywhere.
A very good point. As opposite to, say, Horowitz or Gilels, he played all sorts of music, from pre-Bach to the most contemporary.
I got comfortable impression. My feathery heart calm down. The performance is lively and crisp ,and it is a wonderful technique. The sound quality is powerful and the ability is outstanding. Greetings from Japan. Sayonara!
oh my god! Thank you for publishing this recording! (Thank you again!)
Still my favorite pianist
What... wow. I'm loving this.
A wonderful performance of these Handelian suites. Many thanks for uploading!
A wonderful recording. Thank you for sharing it with us. I had front row seats to see Richter in Japan. Unfortunately he cancelled and then passed away soon after. One of the biggest disappointments in my life. This made my day!
Yes, you really missed the GREATEST (not only of piansts...). Try to see Daniil Trifonov, if he will come to Japan...!
💙🌹😪This is so COSY, COMFORTABLE AND peaceful. EVEN POETIC,Thanks 💙🌹😪
Thanks! Muchas gracias por compartir esta belleza. Saludos! Thanks for this beauty.

Felicitaciones y gracias. Prosigo disfrutando de esta magnìfica funciòn.
gracias por tu comentario :-)
El agradecido soy yo, por tanta generosidad.
As a "die-hard Bach fan", I could say these suites are ENORMOUSLY GOOD !
Bach was my favourite until listening to these. They are filled with personality and charm, unlike Bach's similar compositions. I adhore Bach, but Handel is my favourite!
It's like the die hard apple fan saying this pear is very delicious
@@mairaleikarte43 Indeed... :)
PERFECTION.
Please consider adding an "English" (per google) version of L Gerber's comments above:
It was at first an indecisive, mysterious presence, whose recordings of mediocre sound from Russia were only vaguely recorded.
Complete bliss...
Meget smuk og følsom seriøs musik. Flot spillet af den ældre herre.......
Thank you very much... Splendid!
One of the greatest.
Swjatoslaw Richter. Der Titan.
NOT TRUE! THE TITAN OF THE PIANO THE GIANT OF THE PIANO is Grigory Sokolov! Emil Gilels The KING OF THE PIANO! Artur Rubinstein THE GOD! Who is The greatest? The TITAN THE GIANT= Grigory Sokolov? The KING Emil Gilels? The GOD Artur Rubinstein?.
Love this. Keep coming back to it. Thank you. Great to work to.
what a sound!
Beautiful
I first bought these on LPs, with Gavrilov playing the other suites.
Thank you very much for the rare and most wonderful upload
Gorgeous.
Genial interprete!!!
Most excellent recording!
Fabulous! Thank you for posting this.
Sublime!
Healing Music!!!!
Spiritual music ....very nice
Sure we will glory the Lord at the Sky with such music forever......Eternal life with the Christ.
Beautiful...Thanks.
I don't know if this is just for the magic of Richter, but I didn't think that Handel was so joyful!
70% is the magic of Handel, 90% il the magic of Richter - 160% music !
Bravissimo!!!❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Supremely brilliant playing.
Richter, yes, and then there was Horovitz--Russia produced so many great musical performers and is still doing so today.
Leonid Kogan. God of Violin
My violinistic god for the last seven decades has been David Feodorovich Oistrach, Давид Федороцич Ойстрах; but Leonid Kogan is a great second. 😋

What a legend ~ Glory to Richter for ever and ever ^*^
yes ! !
Glory to God who gave Richter such magisterial talent.
The Air in D minor is gorgeous
