Ohhhh just found your channel and this video :) I'm Vietnamese, and also, at first, I thought that driver was a good guy, until the price of the hat, haha :) That is rather expensive, and he didn't negotiate/bargain for you; fyi, bargain everything and ask for the price before buying or using the product to avoid scams :). Anyhow, I hope that you will have more great adventures in Vietnam and be more aware of the surrounding

Always stay away from those guys who offer you a motorbike tour in Saigon . Most of them are scammers like that guy . He is very well known for scamming tourists . Next time order a Grab taxi ( the equivalent of Uber in SEA ) and you don't have to worry about scam . Their prices are very reasonable and they are very honest .

    • @Jarod_Abroad

Thank you! Yeah I know about Grab, and normally I would know better than to fall for a scam like this, but this guy was smooth haha. To be fair he did straight up lie and say it was free or I could pay him whatever I felt was fair. I don’t take it personally, I still love Vietnam so far! 🙏🏻🇻🇳

It's normal in Saigon, you didn't get scammed really. He tried it & you stood half your ground well. There are a lot of hard drug users. Harshly, if they are missing 2 or more teeth, just turn around. Males your age will keep you safe.

I remember staying in D1 for about three weeks and every few days I'd have people ask me where I was from and if I needed a ride. I always politely declined and told them I would walk to my destination (which I normally did) a good rule of thumb for me is if a stranger starts asking you questions about where your from and what you'd like to see they are setting up a "sale."

Dude, ask them to write down and if you can, take a photo with your phone camera. Even restaurants in Commie Vietnam are known to scam foreigners by overcharging them with higher prices than on the menu. And get this, they even have 2 different menus, ones to show you before with lower prices, and another one showing you afterwards with higher prices if you try to dispute. Take photos!

I spoke a bit about this in one of my previous videos. I know that you it is probably the right thing to do, but I choose not to because it makes for a much more authentic first impression of the countries I visit. Although it has caused some problems for me in the past where I had not done my due diligence I still prefer it this way, maybe it’s old fashioned of me and perhaps a bit naive given that we have the internet in modern times I wouldn’t have it any other way. I don’t recommend it for the faint of heart though because like when I went to Jakarta I got the shock of a lifetime 😳😂 it wasn’t what I was expecting at all! Still very sound advice for all my other viewers though, thanks! 🙏🏻😁

@@Jarod_Abroad After posting that video on RUclips , the police will go after that guy . It's already happened to a sock vendor at Bên Thanh market who wanted to charge a Japanese youtuber 700 000 VND (28 USD ) for 3 pairs of socks and a street fruit vendor in Hanoi who tried to charge an European couple 200 000 VND ( 8 USD ) for 10 jujubes that normally cost only less than 10 000 VND ( 0.4 USD ) Both events were filmed by those tourists and posted on youtube like you did .
