well watching this and your other vids on ur suspension. gave me the motivation to get back out here and try mine again. knowing i don't have to lift the truck up and put it on my jack stands again... i got tire ramps so i can get a little room to work. not fun worrying about stands when you gotta beat on things... i gave up for a while because i couldn't' get my stuff off and was afraid i wouldn't' get it back on if i did get it off... also working on the ground... not fun.. glad i found this stuff same exact rusty parts of my truck same suspension problems. all bushing are shot. wheel bearings (whoel nother issue not being able to get the bolts loose..) are shot and brakes are bad. only thing i wish you had was a vid of that pitman arm. and the wheel knuckles... to finish the job...so i coudl get and idea on those... i got a whole kit. very helpful vids tho. i can't afford a mechanics labor costs and extremely high quotes and risk of them not doing it to my satisfaction.. so maybe i can get as much done on my own as i can and then get the rest done later....... so wish me luck....i gotta go buy that fork.....and bigger hammer
It's nice to watch back on old channel content and learn something, especially since I have just recently replaced the tie rods on my '96 4x4 too lol. But I was wondering, when your driver side tie rods were installed, were you able to rotate them by hand? Because when I was tightening the sleeve down, the rods rotated with it. Just wondering if thats normal or if I got a bad set of driver side tie rods from rock auto? Anyways great video as always and I'm looking forward to another Midnight Maroon Episode! :)
Hey that’s awesome! Thanks for supporting the old content too! 🙌🏼 Yeah you can spin them by hand but there shouldn’t be any “slop” or “play” in them. You’ll be good. Just get everything tightened back up. Then in a couple hundred miles do a bolt check again and snug things up again. That’s especially important on the sway bar. I could’t figure out what broke, but it was just a bolt that needed some more muscle out into it! “Goot N Tight” (it’s German, so I’m told 😜)
Hi buddy. Took my 95 into the shop with a full kit for the front end. Its a 4x4 1500. I had a feeling the track bar was going to be bad since I guess those always do. Steering wheel was not centered and there was play in the wheel. Other than that drive smooth. I had shaken down the tie rods which I thought were bad since i coukd move them pretty easily by hand but they don’t clunk or bang around but move smoothly easily. I told them to let me know what they found when they got it up on the lift. They ended up throwing the track bar in as it was definitely bad and said everything else was ok and aligned it lol. Drove it down the road and wheel is center and that play seems to be gone. But I was thinking that those 4 tie rods ends had to be shot They say the way they move is normal. Idk. Seems like they should be much stiffer. I know you e done this work. What do you think ? Main thing I’m concerned about is a tie rod end breaking while driving that’s it Seems to drive nice down the road
I have a couple questions. I just purchased a 2001 Dodge Ram 1500 SLT Laramie. I believe it has the 5.9 as well. My question is this, "Does the 99 and the 01 have the same setup for tie rod?" Also, my tie rod has a lot of play, I can twist it and see the ball joints move. Is there supposed to be any play in it? One more, my girlfriend was driving behind me and she said that my back wheels seemed "wobbly". Do you know what may cause this? Thanks for the video. Would also like to see how you adjusted each wheel.
They are the same setup. You should have ZERO play or looseness in the ball joints or tie rod ends. I’d replace all of them at once cuz if not your just gonna wear out new parts quickly. Do the work yourself and save money on the mechanics shop expense. The parts aren’t super expensive. Not sure on the rear wheels. Is there any grinding or droning sound coming from them? If so it could we a wheel bearing. But even then it shouldn’t “wobble”! 😱
One thing that caught me. I didn't tighten the bolts tight enough and started getting "knocking" when hitting small bumps like manhole covers. Torque those things down!!! haha
Just commented on your other video I’m wondering if I should do the track bar by itself or just go for it and buy the package that comes with the tie rod ends as well really a dumb question I guess but I can get the track bar for 50 bucks then I can get the package that comes with the tire rod ends for 150 can I watch the video no thanks
Thanks man! Lots of work went into the interior. That’s also a brand new dash cap. The old one cracked really bad and had to be completely replaced. Did that right before starting my channel though. Was a huge undertaking! Yeah wandering issue is now resolved. Got my laser alignment done and everything is rock solid! For the record my eyeball alignment was only off by 0.08%. Not bad for an amateur in the driveway. 😜🕺🏼
Hi! I just had my upper and lower tie rods replaced on my 2001 dodge 1500 5.9 4x4. They needed replaced because I have large aftermarket wheels. Two days later, my steering seized up and the power steering fluid level is pretty much bone dry. I checked underneath and it looks like it’s dripping fluid from the bottom of the tie rods. Never saw this before! Did the mechanic replace the tie rods incorrectly or would I need a new gear box? Should I have possibly needed an alignment after having the tie rods installed? Any info would be helpful, I appreciate i!😇🙏🏻
You definitely need an alignment after doing suspension/steering work on any vehicle. As for the leaks 🤷🏼♂️ too many factors to say if it was caused by the work done. Depends on where it’s leaking from. Sometimes cycling the steering without the pump running can cause it to overflow from the filler cap. Hope that’s all it was. 😬
@@troysgarage It’s leaking from the bottom of the steering box where the tie rod connects. I spoke with the mechanic and he said changing the pitman arm shaft seal is too much work to change out. He wants me to replace my entire gear box. I want to try and buy the tools and attempt to fix the seals on my own before buying a new gear box. Would you advise this?
I just looked. Didn’t include parts in the description. Sorry about that. Here’s a kit that includes ball joints and tie rod ends - amzn.to/3evJm5S. Addd the link to the description too. 👍🏼
@@troysgarage nice ! Yeah I hear about alot of dodge v8 s guessing yours is the big 360 with big miles. Mine has 164k and I’m just getting it ready to start actually using it besides around town. My neighbor has one with 270k. Great trucks

Tie rods shouldn’t move easily. If you can move them by hand it’s time to replace them.

I just replied to your other comment to with steps to isolate your issue. See that comment and let me know if you have any questions.

I’ve never attempted it. Do some research. Maybe it is a big job or harder than it makes it worth time wise. Not sure how much a gearbox costs. 🤷🏼♂️
@@troysgarage thank you for your reply! It’s appreciated 🙏🏻
I have a 99 dodge 1500. 4wheel 318. Title says nothing about what model it is. Sport etc...how can I find out. 2dr with 1/2 doors . Club cab I guess.
That’s what this truck is. Crew cab Sport model. But these parts should be the same across all 4x4 models.
@@troysgarage ok cool. Thanks.
🤔my 98 4x4 Ram doesn’t have that steering stabilizer mounting bracket. Mine is more of a welded bracket. Did the prior owner put the wrong front end?
No idea. Or someone with a welder was having some fun with a repair. 🤷🏼♂️
DIY Home and Auto 😂 well I hate that guy
Do I need to jack up the truck for this?
Nope. I had plenty of room under to do everything I needed to.
How much did all those parts cost? I’m looking into this. I know my outter tie rods are shot but want to change all

DIY Home and Auto how are they holding up?
DIY Home and Auto I almost ordered this exact kit but realized it’s for a rear wheel drive. Mine is a 4x4. How are they holding up?
When is the next video on the ford going to come out??
Today! Just posted. Check it out! 😜🕺🏼
Do you still have the truck ? How many miles?
I sold the truck in Oct with 309k miles on it. I still use it driving around so it’s still alive. 😜

Yup fact. I miss it. But I LOVE my 2016 RAM Rebel too. It’s got 148k and going strong too. Hemi also for the win

You didn't show the sleeve adjustments 🤷♂️ Oh well, I'll figure it out.
Pipe wrench. One way pulls in the other pushes out.
I know this is old but GOD DAMN dude you NEED bigger jack stands for that truck.
Those stands are made for Honda Civics.
Go big or get SQUISHED.
I have upgraded since this video! Safety first for sure. 👍🏼
