I love the framing of Joyce comforting Willow, who is vocally grieving, while Buffy suffers stoically and alone because she's silent about it. Her mother doesn’t see her suffering, so doesn’t know to comfort her. It's such a brilliant visual representation of what it’s like for Buffy to be the Slayer

Well, it seems like technically she did get back into Giles' good books before Angelus killed her. "Did he put on the music?" He put on the music, left a note, chilled the wine, spread rose petals and lit a dozen or more candles and placed them on the stairs. It's fucking brutal, but I do love how much effort Angelus puts into being evil.
Oh and re: the floppy disks, the one you see here is 3.5" floppy that were pretty much the final form of the floppy disk before we moved on to other media. They were fairly sturdy. They're called floppy because the even older versions (5.25" and 8") weren't in hard shells, but in thin, flimsy plastic covers and they were, in fact, floppy.

I love the Angelus narration, Chris Beck's score (the bass percussion especially), Giles at his apartment, the fight, Buffy punching Giles and then hugging him, and the cliffhanger with the floppy disk. @@vlad5042To be fair, Buffy's immediate reaction was guilt and responsibility and thinking she caused it to happen. In her own mind, this wouldn't have happened if she (1) hadn't gotten together with Angel and (2) had killed Angel when she had the chance in 2x14. She wasn't as close to Jenny as Willow was (Buffy still felt a sense of betrayal and hadn't worked with Jenny like Willow did). During the scene over Jenny's grave, the vocals were recorded by Anthony Stewart Head. (I never knew Giles himself was singing on that). He’s a notorious vamp who got fame for killing slayers, and now he is stuck in a wheelchair unable to walk, let alone fight his stronger, psychotic grand-sire who’s banging his girl! No wonder he cant stand angelus.

This whole “I told you so” moment, not even considering the very probable consequences for Giles, because all he’s thinking about is killing Angelus, something he’s wanted since Buffy got together with Angel is another instance of that for me.

4:45 well the creator and showrunner, had very little film experience before Buffy (he studied at Wesleyan '87 but mostly writing) and he was basically a writer. He directed the unaired pilot and he learned before his very first directing effort: Prophecy Girl. Even with his first attempt he was easily the best Buffy director (I mean: until Passion we have Prophecy, When She Was Bad, Lie To Me, Innocence...) and that was a very top down show and also in that period Joss did pretty much everything (story concept, storybreaking, he rewrote maaaany scenes, was on set every day, at the editing bay, with the musics etc). So yeah: it was his style. However he had an experienced director by his side, his 2nd in command and co-showrunner, David Greenwalt. He directed one of the most enjoyable and emotionals (very Buffy) teen films in the 80s: Secret Admirer. Finally, at this point of the series, Buffy had not its resident directors (they came around S3 and fully formed S4). The ones who Joss trust because they knew what he wanted. Same with writers (half formed S3, fully S4). By then Joss, Greenwalt and Noxon wrote almost everything.

RE: "Killed by Death." "I was expecting a heavy grief episode, but we had a "monster of the week" (episode). Good point. But, I think at least with Giles, he's kind of "prepared" himself for hardship. In S01 Episode 5, "Never Kill a Boy yadda yadda," Giles talked about being raised, knowing that his father and grandfather were Watchers, and that was the progression intended for him. His Ripper years may have delayed it, but now, here he is, a full-fledged Watcher.
Plus, there's the stereotype of Brits (or, ya know, everybody) "keeping a stiff upper lip," "keep calm and carry on," etc. Not saying it's healthy, just that it is a thing that might pertain to poor Rupert.
Also, in real life, grief tends to have its own messed up timetable. On TV, grief usually occurs on a more predictable schedule. I think this show shoots to reflect the more genuine aspects of the complexity of human feelings, than the average TV show does.

The siring process for turning someone into a vampire in the Buffyverse: The vampire drinks your blood, but not quite enough to kill you right away. Then they make you drink a little of their blood, which evidently attracts a new demon to your body. Sometime after that you die, your soul departs and the demon takes over and re-animates your body; the time that takes seems to vary from a few hours to a couple of days. Your body can be embalmed and buried during that time, then you have to wait to crawl out of your grave until after sundown. If your family cremates you I guess the demon is SOL.

Joss Whedon really only did TV, but he did direct the first two Avengers films and Serenity (which was the finale to his show Firefly).
He did write Alien: Resurrection, Toy Story and other films.
    PASSION
Oh yeah, one of my favorite episodes of the series, such a turning point and another example of main/recurring characters that are not safe. Angelus is here like a cat playing with his food and what's even more evident here is he doesn't feed on her, showing that Angelus is even more devious.
The scene of Giles finding Calendar was very shocking, the music just amplified that.
Giles busting in there was amazing, showing that Giles is actually holding back and we get to see a hint of his Ripper persona.
Buffy's reaction by hitting Giles and saying "I can't do this alone" is important to note since her first Watcher died protecting her (you can either see the film that butchered Whedon's script or read the comic that Whedon made)
The Floppy Disk is actually floppy, I remember the original floppy disc. Those that you see here are 3 1/2 A Floppy Disk that aren't actually floppy. They were like flash drives or SD cards back in the day.
    KILLED BY DEATH
The thing on Buffys face is never addressed.
The Freddy Krueger companion is something many have talked about.
I think Cordelia's reaction is understandable, she probably doesn't feel like Xander would protect her like he's trying to protect Buffy (or even Willow) and remember too that Cordelia did give up her social circle for Xander so he should be giving her that confidence
The demon may not be the exact same one, it's possible there's more than one, we'll never know though.
How do the writers come up with this stuff? Well a demon sucking the life out of kids, the eyes are the windows to the soul and that's how he sucks in their soul.
Buffy has a strong immune system but she's still human. It's possible that Buffy overworking herself is what weakened her but she can still get sick, it's just rare.
Get ready for the finale, we have 1 more episode I'd say is great, 1 that's not so much but then the fantastic two part finale
    Also love AC/DC

Making a new vampire in the Buffyverse needs the vampire to drain someone of blood until they're almost dead, then the victim needs to drink some of the vampire's own blood (meaning that they still need to be alive at that point). The victim then dies, and as far as normal people are concerned, they're just a corpse which died of neck trauma and blood loss.
The victim rises as a new vampire some time later: hours or days (the exact time seems to vary). A Buffyverse vampire is the corpse of a dead person walking around with a demon controlling it, though it retains the memories of its previous human self.

I'm pretty sure it was there that they said that Jenny's death was completely deliberate, because 1) It raises the stakes for the whole show, because it says they aren't afraid to kill off a major character. 2) It makes Angelus into a full villain so that Buffy and also the audience can fully commit to being against him as the antagonist. 3)It continues Giles's character arc from mild mannered librarian into becoming a braver person.

Since I don't see it near the top of the comments, just a refresher on how to become a vampire in the Buffy universe:
    1. Vampire bites a human and drinks from them to the point where they will die from blood loss if nothing else is done
    2. Vampire feeds the dying human their blood (it's unclear how much is needed, but it's not very much)
    3. Human dies
    4. The next night, the human rises as a new vampire. Sometimes by that time they've been buried already, sometimes they are in a morgue. Often, since making a new vampire is an intentional act, the maker (or "sire") will bury their new vampire-to-be themselves or otherwise make some sort of arrangement for their return.

They were an improvement over earlier 5.25" disks in that they had a rigid exterior and could hold more data. At this time, there was also optical storage (CDs), but floppy disks were more common as they were much less expensive and could more easily be rewritten. There were also a technology called zip disks at this time. While zip disks could hold much more data, they were significantly more expensive and were killed off by optical storage in CD and DVD media. I do not believe there were USB sticks commonly available at this time.

  • @Xhalph
    @Xhalph 9 месяцев назад

Since you asked, here's a refresher on how siring a vampire works:
First, the vampire bites the human and drinks a lot of their blood. Then the vampire cuts themself and lets the human drink some of the vampire's blood. Then the human dies; their soul goes off to wherever human souls go after death. The corpse remains dead for a while, often long enough to be buried. Then a particular type of demon spirit, let's call it a vampire spirit, enters the corpse and reanimates it, and you get your regular Buffyverse vampire. It has the memories of the human, but it's a different consciousness with a different mentality (drive to prey on humans, lack of conscience, comically sadistic, and so on).
In the case of Angel, the curse crammed his soul back in his body without displacing the vampire spirit (we saw in The Dark Age how that third spirit tried to possess Angel put got wrecked by the vampire spirit). So Angelus was still there, but the human soul gives him a conscience that leaves him wracked with guilt over the things he did. The curse had that weird "moment of perfect happiness" clause so that Angel, fearing the return of Angelus, wouldn't ever let himself be happy; he was supposed to actively keep himself miserable for the rest of his days. Unfortunately, love causes people to make bad decisions...
