Black Tongue is criminally underrated. The last riff to Abuse Ritual will put you in a trance its so good just to give a stank face when it comes back slower. Love this whole record
Genuinely that is one of my favorite riffs of all time. That riff, 40 seconds into Conditional Healing from Fit for an autopsy, 3:19 into Castrophize from Humanity’s last breath, and the verse riff from The Art of dying from Gojira.
Oh man that riff is just absurd. I finally learned it on guitar this week and I've been loving playing it. Its Such a groovy riff with different higher notes and vibrato that make the heavy open chugs hit that much harder . That open chug makes me pull a stank face every time lol
On isntagram someone asked abt it and alex said "you cant rush perfection". I said "i though you guys broke up" and he said "black tongue is eternal" so maybe we will
Dude, I have been borderline obsessed with this record ever since it came out and a huge reason for that is Alex's vocal performance. If you could manage to get him on the channel and do one of these "Reacting to the song with the vocalist himself"-type for him to explain some of the stuff he does and how he approaches his vocals it would be a dream come.
I got into metal late in the game and I discovered black tongue from infant Annihilator. Alex has the most brutal, violent, hateful voice I’ve ever heard. The Latin part of “tired of sighing.” I could go on. Truly one of the hardest vocalists to ever live
A dying God in human flesh is sooooooooo dam good, my goodness, these guys like you saud portray emotion so well through vocsls, its crazy. You can feel the hate, the despair, the sadness, the darkness, to good!
I'm so glad you share such a love for Black Tongue and this album specifically. This album is my absolute favorite of all time, nothing has come close to it besides shadow of intents reclaimer album. The pure feeling of emotion you get from every track in this album, you can do nothing but respect the blood and sweat that went into the creation of it. I never get tired of listening to it, and it gets me so hyped anytime I give it a listen. I yearn deeply for new Black tongue all the time. Much love
Gracias.
Nadir is my go to album to not treat people around me badly when I'm really angry. Works at work and at home. I'm a very relaxed and chill dude and don't want to misbehave. So when I get angry I withdraw and listen to Nadir. This triggers my deep aggression and anger so much that I'm able to cool down very fast. It's not often that I have to rely on this but I'm glad it's such a good way to treat myself. I'm thankful for this masterpiece.
I have been utterly entrapped by this album since it came out. Obsessed to the point of covering multiple of their songs just for the practice. He's truly phenomenal. The story this album tells is so wriggly and nasty i love it
me as emotional music listener i enjoy black tongue a lot. lots of room to breath for the emotions to show themselves within the music. fucking amazing how something can sound so heavy and emotional
Honestly you should've done a mega-breakdown on the whole album 😄 Nadir is such an underrated masterpiece and it NEVER gets old. BT's music always gets me and I've heard it 100s of times. I know you've done a few songs off the album before but I'm sure you understand my excitement.. Please do more from this band, even if from their other albums! :D
I'm so in love with Nadir that I have been working on a custom D&D themed campaign based off of their lyrics. I am no where close to calling it complete, but I was able to DM some sessions with my players and watching them interact with the world that I was able to put together thanks to Black Tongue was such an experience. Alex's vocals absolutely punch on Nadir. By far my biggest vocal influence and is easily my most practiced tone. There's not a single song that I can stomach skipping over. I am desperate for another album, though.
Alex is hands down the best lyricist in metal. I sometimes forget to even mention them in the conversation of best "deathcore" bands (or whatever you wanna call them) simply because they stand in a league of their own. Truly untouchable S-tier band
I'm usually not into Deathcore, but the second I heard Nadir I instantly became a fan of them, Alex's voice is just so primal, I really hope they drop something new soon
holy shit, i cannot stop listening to Nadir after watching this video, especially The Cathedral. thank you so much Mark! i gotta find more music like this lmao
INB4 eventually, one day Mark has made an analysis for every song on Nadir. XD (Also, youtube video player pro tip, pressing the left or right arrow keys will jump backwards or forwards by exactly 5 seconds. Easy way to rewind even long videos by 10 or 20 or 30 seconds if you want to.)
YESSSS, this is by far my favourite song from black tongue and performance from Alex. Fantastic track and really happy you did an analysis of this one!
Absolutly love black tongue they are definently one of the bands im dying to see live sometime. Also I was wondering if you could take a look at Beyond deviation - Oni ? The vocalist does nazgul/banshee screams, Would be interesting to hear an analysis of it rarely ever hear other vocalists do it.
I’ve always wanted to hear you review Abuse Ritual, too! This whole album is pretty incredible. Pretty amazing to have this be the first album you create after leaving the music industry and doing everything on your own.
Thanks so much for this! I'm a huge fan of Black Tongue, I think Nadir is their best release. I found them and Humanity's Last Breath around the same time, amazing stuff. I'll definitely be hitting you up for some vocal lessons before long!
Found Black Tongue through Parting Soliloquy and fell in love with the bleak brutality they deliver. That song remains my favourite but their whole catalogue is incredible.
I'm 40 and I love that Black Tongue newly entered my top 3 (and I generally hate deathcore). There's something so much deeper and more fulfilling in this album than the general "I'm a toughguy" message of most metal records. I love that this album "crashed in" to my favorites. My late uncle listened to GNR until he died and described his musical tastes as in a "time warp." That sounded terrifying to me.
This album definitely hits deep, I agree there. It's also true that it can be very easy for all of us to get stuck in what we are familiar with and have always enjoyed. It takes effort to broaden one's horizons, and also - who even has the time anymore? Haha!
I absolutely love Alex, and I've never even met the guy. Dude has a way of poking at something visceral in me, and that's before even taking lyrics and music into account. Edit: Also yeah, with Second Death, ya just fucking _can't_ until you've done a few mental windmills.
Second Death. I think I listen to this song at least 5 times a month. Used to listen to it more.. because ya know, you find that one song to kill babies to and have to have it on repeat 143 times in a row until you don't hear the same song anymore.
There working on a new IA album rn probably a black tounge after that i think they were just fatigued from touring so much and took a break props for the LLNN shout out and baulders gate lol. You have some good tatse.
Are you going to talk about how Daniel Tompkins screams now? We just have to talk about this. He's normally a cleanboi, but now we have a solid fry comin' out of this throat.
I started learning false cord back in August of this year. I knew that I had an OK hang of it, is as you have said, when I was able to normally speak in false cord without hurting my normal voice in any way. I still need to work on my breath support and duration of my distortion during screaming, but the basis of regular fc scream along the stuff like gutturals and tunnel throats I am quite fine with.
Speaking of favorite vocal performance. You have to check out circle of dead children - human harvest album. Raw and filthy and probably the most underrated vocalist ever.
it is just so funny that to be able to do the most burtal vocal techniques, so many teachers tell you to "hey if you want to sound like satan himself, just practice talking like kermit the frog!"
so many "metal fans" shit on black tongue and this album specifically... i dont understand how. This is DEFINITELY one of my favorite albums of all time. Its so good.
Hey Mark how important do you think being active and physically fit is for a vocalist? Would being good at cardio or weights for example be beneficial for something like breath control or just general endurance for vocals?
