I have zero interest in vlogging...but I just gave 30 minutes of my life to this video because it's a Philip Bloom video, and every Philip Bloom video is worth watching. I will say though...watching his camera reviews has cost me $11,000 so far this year. Just got my FX9 yesterday and it's amazing. On the flippy side, I probably would have bought the C500 Mark 2...so in a way Philip saved me $5000....
Haha, I'll just have to wait for your R5 feature film to hit theaters and see if you can save me any more money. ;) It's definitely an interesting looking camera. These camera manufacturers know how to intrigue us.

This is about the tenth review of this camera I’ve watched over the past two days, but yours are always the best. It’s like listening to a trusted friend. Thanks for another informative review with your highly valued opinions. I’m also not looking for a vlogging cam, just came for a dose of Bloom.

Seriously Philip Bloom is the best gear reviewer on RUclips, covers just about everything in detail, his reviews are planned out and always leaves us fully informed after watching! thank you Philip for your time and effort in doing these reviews, I much appreciate it! Lol @ Tina Turner wig 😂😂 Best review on the ZV-1 I have seen on here and I've watched plenty of them. Well done, Sir! Enjoyed the Catalyst Browse segment because no one else talks about it.
I'm surfing online for past couple of days and your review seemed to be the most honest one! Thanks for a detailed review like this but I think people would like to see a review from a professional photographer's perspective. You've already mentioned that it's also capable of good stills, so it'd be really helpful if you do a dedicated review based on the photography performance of this camera like, landscapes, street photography, portraits, sports etc. Thanks a lot for this video btw!
I got the Sony A5100 tented to get the A6400 - But I AM SO IN, to get the ZV-1. I saw already the reviews of others wellknown RUclipsrs. You gave me the last kick. I´ll definitely get the ZV-1 not only for the fun factor, but for carrying around. It Is the small factor, and indeed more professional than The Smartphone.
I got the ZV-1 recently, and what can I say. Program Mode, Defocus Button and Gyrofunction just transforms the way I shoot video... Nobody EVER noticed (even if specifically asked for it), when I used different shutter speeds, but most people notice, if the depth of field is different. Up to this point I would hassle with 180 degree rule, variable NDs and stabilizers and such - scrapped all of it for daily shooting, Auto+internal ND+Defocus+Gyro in my pant pocket all the way...
This supposedly ''V-loggers'' camera featuring the wrong lens, no headphone jack, a 10-year old sub-mediocre model battery, an optical stabilizer that doesn't stabilize anything and with no USB-C, plus, all it's other features, pros and cons, are all lavishly and thoroughly obliterated by Sony's completely spectacular name given to it's companion Bluetooth grip: GP-VPT2BT Pure genius. This naming is surely where most of the R&D and engineering attention went so we have to forgive everything else around this camera that is less than perfect. Thank you for a wonderful review as always, Philip :)
This camera will sell, this camera is for simpleton people which doesn't care much, real camera nerds is not part of segment of this. All they need is small camera, easy to use, automatic mode, and flippy screen.
I agree with everything but the battery. Battery technology has progressed pretty much nowhere in the commercial space in at least the last ten years. Sony (or whomever their suppliers are) would struggle to produce a battery of the same size with any noticeable amount more capacity. And I doubt there's any room left in such a feature-packed device for a bigger battery.
In my subscription feed, your video was the last one posted. The old saying was right, the last one is always the best and the first one I watched on the Sony ZV-1.
Two and a half years of shooting vid on GH5 with my mid forty's something eyesight with my glasses de jour, and just realized it had/I could change the diopter on the EVF! Embarrassing, but game changer, thank you Philip!
...Don’t be ridiculous! (crickets) ahaaa!!! Brilliant! Bravo!! 👏🏻 The Only one on this entire platform that can make a NEW VLOGGING camera demo video more interesting and entertaining than most television shows on these days... 😂🙏✌️
As always, great review. I don't vlog but this camera almost makes me want to. Really interesting point about the gyroscopic data tracking. I would imagine we'll start to see that in more cameras and I can't imagine it'll be too long before the video editing platforms start to make use of it. Seems like a no-brainer.
Hopefully! It’s easier to do with fixed lens cameras. With my FX9 I have to turn off any OIS on lenses as it has no way of knowing the exact movement of it for the data.
I know this was a while ago now... but as someone with no interest in vlogging, I see this as the perfect ‘keep in my pocket’ camera with excellent AF to document my 7 week old... is there something better I’m missing?!
I love to watch your reviews, even when it's about a camera brand I have no longer have an interest in. Loved the link to the Vegas slo-mo/infrared video with the music. Very nice touch.
This was a damn good review as always Philip! Hope you review the S1H and/or X-T4 at some point but I understand that it takes a lot of time to do so no worries if not! :D

Phillip, we all love you, I mean your voice is legendary from the "Introducing the Inspire 1" video and many other projects but I felt like you had succumbed to the Sony lunacy at 2:30 when you said you "prefer the flippy up screen". Madness! You know you're glad Sony bought a $2 hinge from Walmart so we can have a proper flippy out screen. Joking aside, I realize you give your reasons but when you said it, it hurt like a punch to the gut. I'm definitely buying a ZV1, even though the video codecs are pretty much identical to the Sony AX53 camcorder from 2016. *sighs*, the ZV1 is actually very nice despite the cripplings like "it dims the screen in 4K recording" ugh that's so embarrassing and "in your face" from Sony saying "haha". The GoPro Hero 6 Black from a few years ago doesn't even "dim the screen" when filming full sensor readout 12megapixel video (4000x3000) with good dynamic range in Native White Balance, -1 EV, Flat profile. Irritations aside, I'm grateful Sony accidentily left in a histogram and zebras. I think they are so poor now just recycling old technology that they couldn't pay the guy another dose of hourly pay to cripple the ZV1 any more after the "it dims the screen in 4K" ... the Sony AX53 camcorder from 2016 doesn't "dim the screen in 4K" but to be fair the ZV1 is smaller and has a much smaller battery. I'm guessing the ZV1 can't draw as much juice from that tiny battery, as downsampling that 20mp sensor to 4K and powering that slick autofocus probably takes so much energy that they have to dim the screen. Overall the ZV1 is a very solid camera though. It's the best we have right now at this pocketable size :)
Great review, but i'm quite happy with my Panasonic LX15 i've had for ages now ... despite having all my pro gear for professional use my LX15 gets used every day for practically everything.
The integrated ND filter is what keeps exposure constant for the 'background defocus' mode; that's why 'exposure compensation' can't work at the same time.
Have you got one? Because you are incorrect. Who says exposure compensation doesn’t work in this mode? It absolutely does. What I said in the video is IF YOU ADJUST it then it switches off. Same with some other functions. This is a temporary thing and you just have to press it again to engage it. It’s a very Sony thing. It uses autoexposure to make it work, how depends on the mode you are in. Please note the ND filter is 3 stops. The F stop difference between the defocus mode and clear at the wide end is a little under 1.5 stops. Cheers!
The lack of wider lens is a deal breaker because I don't want a selfie stick I want to just put the camera in my pocket some times and not be forced to use a stick. Shame... Such a great camera for its price and size otherwise
Would be nice if they allowed you to compensate the exposure with the ND filter on. That would solve a lot of problems whilst in the sun. :/ I guess you can always play with the ISO or the fstop.
Regarding the use of Sony’s ECM-B1M microphone on the hot shoe.. when you say that it sadly won’t work with the cameras small battery, are you saying that it is voltage incompatible, or that the mic draws down the internal battery so fast that it’s effectively useless as a audio input Mic.. the reason I ask is I have use case for this camera with that specific mic and wonder if attaching a USB power brick to the camera, I can actually use the ECM-B1M for better audio than the built in mic or the Rode micro.. great review video BTW !!
It says “incompatible” because it would draw too much power. You can use the UWP wireless receiver you just have to make sure you add batteries to it and not draw power from the camera.
Excellent review. Totally going to pick this up. Regarding the background blur button, I think I will do the same (just keep the lens at f1.8) and remap the button to slow-mo.
Thanks. You are limited in what you can put on function buttons. I’ve set my C1 to AF/MF switch so it acts like a focus hold. You can’t make it go into a different frame rate or resolution with a button. It’s quicker to get into HFR via the mode button than it is to go from 4K to HD continuous slow motion. That’s a menu thing.
David Addis you can set one of the presets in the mode button to HD 50p/60p which is what I did with my RX100 VII but it does revert to any other settings from when you creates them. Like white balance, ISO, picture profile etc. Just like any presets really
@@philipbloom Ah but not 120p? 60p would probably be enough in most cases... I guess either way I'll get good at hitting the mode button enough times to swap to Slow-Mo mode eventually. :)
appreciate hearing your take on things, Philip. I was thinking of investing in this camera myself, for small business advertisement and branding videos. having heard about the battery issue and lack of manual focus options however, I can see that this is sadly not the camera for me. It is a shame though, because I do not know where else I could find stabilisation and low light capabilities at this price point.
Thank you. Do you need "vlogging" type abilities? The manual focus isn't a massive deal, to be honest, it was never easy with the RX100 cameras. I didn't cover it but the touch screen focus is really good. Just use that instead of manual focus.
Okay, did you... A) come here looking to buy a Sony ZV-1, or B) come here looking for purely entertainment, because, after all, it is Philip Bloom we are talking about
How did you grade the ZV-1 Videos with film convert as there is no preset available yet for it on their website? This was the best video on the ZV-1. Thank you :)
hahaha . . . best rickety segway to the sponsor's message :p I think the RX100VIII is going to inherit the vlogging features and not kill the EVF nor manual controls. And maybe, just maybe, It'll get USB C, WiFi that's not from anno 1998 and an F1.8 Zeiss lens. Maybe Sony will finally re-open my upgrade path and stop me from peeking over the fence at Canon and Panasonic.. Inconceivable!
Wow! your review convince me about this camera! no other RUclipsr could make me feel like it's an ultimate camera like you did! even my favorite @potatojet couldn't!! by the way, I love your t-shirt! LOL
I was to Tweet "No more ZV1 Review please". I have nothing but ZV-1 review videos on my RUclips feed now, and then this video dropped in and I thought, let's see what his cats will do to ZV.
I'm very surprised to learn that this camera doesn't have audio AGC. I've checked the manual and no mention is given to any audio auto level settings - this is usually standard fare on amateur video cameras. This can't be right surely? Sony's ECM-XYST1M Stereo and the ECM-GZ1M microphones designed for their video cameras using Sony's MIS shoe, can ONLY work in AGC and can't be levelled.
"Vloggers always seem to be walking somewhere"
You're the best Philip, really.

I'm sorry but his ad segways are so much better than Linus's
Excellent review. Totally going to pick this up. Regarding the background blur button, I think I will do the same (just keep the lens at f1.8) and remap the button to slow-mo.
Thanks. You are limited in what you can put on function buttons. I’ve set my C1 to AF/MF switch so it acts like a focus hold. You can’t make it go into a different frame rate or resolution with a button. It’s quicker to get into HFR via the mode button than it is to go from 4K to HD continuous slow motion. That’s a menu thing.
@@philipbloom Ah okay, good to know, thanks!
You’re the onli one who mentioned the catalyst software in all the videos I watched in utube 💪
Its the first time I've heard of this software. Best of all, its made by Sony and free. Thanks Philip Bloom for highlighting this software 🔥
I’m looking forward to seeing the first tests with wide-angle converters.
Once more, great video Philip
You still got it Phil - great stuff.
Well, the one key feature that wasn't mentioned in vid is high ISO performance. Any thoughts Mr Bloom?
Same as RX100VII I reckon but the glass is slightly faster so low light will look better
Ulanzi has made a wide angle adapter which takes it to 18mm. I have seen great reviews of it. Would love to see your take on it.
Love your videos.
It's worth having for the gyroscopic stabalisation. Sort of in your pocket stabalisation.
appreciate hearing your take on things, Philip.
Thanks for the review Mr. Bloom
Okay, did you...
A) come here looking to buy a Sony ZV-1, or
B) come here looking for purely entertainment, because, after all, it is Philip Bloom we are talking about
That is the most brilliant sponsor segue I've ever seen. hahaha
How did you grade the ZV-1 Videos with film convert as there is no preset available yet for it on their website?
This was the best video on the ZV-1. Thank you :)
Can you do a color grading video? The hlg looked amazing on the zv1,
hahaha . . . best rickety segway to the sponsor's message :p I think the RX100VIII is going to inherit the vlogging features and not kill the EVF nor manual controls.
LOL
Do you know what the rest of the T shirt says?
@@philipbloom I think I know cuz I checked the website you linked before! "They don't!"
Takahiro Oda yup! :)
I was to Tweet "No more ZV1 Review please". I have nothing but ZV-1 review videos on my RUclips feed now, and then this video dropped in and I thought, let's see what his cats will do to ZV.
This is the review I need...thanks mate 😊
Best review ever made
A Tina Turner wig. That was actually really funny (because its true) 🤣🤣
I made and fitted those railings (19:18) lol stay safe bud.. Gaz
The best reviewer of all times.
Excellent review all around!
Probably the best review of this camera 👍
I'm very surprised to learn that this camera doesn't have audio AGC. I've checked the manual and no mention is given to any audio auto level settings - this is usually standard fare on amateur video cameras. This can't be right surely? Sony's ECM-XYST1M Stereo and the ECM-GZ1M microphones designed for their video cameras using Sony's MIS shoe, can ONLY work in AGC and can't be levelled.
