      The man who developed modern day marketing, Edward Bernays, was Sigmund Freud’s nephew. He used everything he knew about psychology to make products as appealing as possible by making you attached to the feeling the products gives you rather than the product itself, ex cigarettes (big Tabasco) in the 1920’s and now with social media (big tech). The product’s aren’t good, but when you get 100 likes on your picture you’ll keep coming back. As psychology becomes more bolstered their techniques only get more refined so people like Bezos and Zuckerberg can continue to fine tune their hold on people. It’s just like how a director in a horror film should make you scared and there are very specific psychological tricks to play on the audience to do this. It’s not inherently bad, but when used in the wrong way it will corrupt us all.

    True fact: The “carbon footprint” phenomenon itself stems from an ad campaign from one of the biggest oil companies: BP. Yes. They came up with the “ carbon footprint calculator” in 2005 to make consumers think about what they could do as a person to minimize the climate damage they do on a daily basis. This was just a deflection campaign from their own bad actions including oil spills etc. causing them to have a bad rep. but funny to see that we actually still use the term.

    The beauty industry is just as bad as the fashion industry. These “clean” beauty brands will label their products as clean, yet the packaging is plastic. They will also use terms like “chemicals” as a negative in skincare, when in reality a lot of so-called “natural” ingredients are not good or safe for the skin. Another example, they have a ton of new releases but will continue to say it’s “recycled” packaging with natural ingredients. Never are their packaging reusable or recyclable. Greenwashing in skincare happens far too often and the fear mongering of “unnatural” ingredients is ridiculous. Especially for people who struggle with acne, natural ingredients only cause more issues for their skin.

      Yes! And most skin care products are a complete scam. Moisturizer for one is the biggest scam on the market. The more you use it the more you need it. It makes your body stop producing its own oils and in turn It dries your skin out so you need to use and buy more and more moisturizer. I haven't used moisturizers for years but I randomly tested out some lotion a couple weeks ago and it dried my skin out so unbelievably bad. It was crazy. Wrinkle creams actually make you look older so you keep buying the creams.

      I think that there are few misconceptions here. Natural can be totally ok for acne prone skin, it really depends on the person. I usually use the most ''natural'' skincare like I prefer to use products with a short ingredients list. I only shower with basic organic soap bc shower gels are just itching me so bad. And my dry af skin totally needs its moisturizer, I use a organic plant based balm that is a live saver in winter. Vegetal oils are also good for my skin. This being said I also use SPF and Retinol. Let's just have common sense and use what suit our skin

    To add on the plastic waste with companies like Coca cola, i think we all know that they used to make exclusively glass bottles. Back then, you had to return the bottles so they'd be cleaned and reused in the factory and they'd give you back the price of the bottle for doing so. Then they figured they could make even more money by shutting down those parts of their factories and making all their bottles in plastic that aren't meant to be reused by the company. They ordered a study on the impact of that change on a global scale and the study showed it would cause to drastic increase in plastic waste given how popular their brand is. Just like the tabacco companies did with the studies they ordered that proved to them they were killing people with their products, Coca cola said "whatever, i prefer money", chose to ignore those results and ever since they have worked hard to reduce their glass bottles production to nearly zero. When they became the face of plastic waste around the world cause everyone noticed coca cola bottles trashing the planet, they developped an ad campaign putting responsibility on the consumers to get read of the waste.
    Now it's easy to say that it's indeed our fault but as an engineer i can tell you that the most important part of designing a product is thinking about how the consumer is gonna use it. All product designs imply the use of the product and influences the behavior of the consumer. That's why the studies said glass bottles were far better for the environnement, because the plastic bottles were MADE to be thrown away compared to the glass ones that were MADE to be reused. Recycling a plastic bottle is still far more complicated than simply washing and sanitizing a glass bottle. Plus not all plastic is recyclable while all glass is washable. PLUS the system the company made around glass bottles guaranteed that consumers all over the world would return their bottles, whereas there is no such system with plastic bottles (mostly because plastic is worth peanuts and that's the very reason they chose that material, to improve their profit margines). On top of that most countries don't have the proper means to effectively recycle plastic.
    Coca cola knows that very well. They know that they are only able to recycle roughly 1/3 of their bottles. They know it's a far cry from the proportion of glass bottles they use to repurpose. But they don't care. Also they and Nestlé are depriving a lot of people from access to clean drinkable water but that's a story for another day.

    Whats so frustrating is companies, trough their greenwashing efforts, not only are just trying to get you to buy more of their products, but the second part of the magic trick is getting you to feel like you have an individual responsibility to fix the problem. You, an individual consumer, have to "reduce your carbon footprint", recycle more, buy sustainable goods etc. When the companies themselves are what needs to change. Not to mention, recycling plastic was basically PR from oil/plastic companies so people wouldnt feel so uncomfortable about buying so much single use plastic, even tho the oil/plastic compaines knew that recycling plastic wasnt a feasible solution and it has only gotten less feasible since

    • @michellewu6689

      To me, it goes both ways. Let’s be honest- people *need* to REDUCE their consumption habits. I don’t believe people should shame those for buying fast fashion items because a lot of people can’t afford actual ethical items. However, it’s a problem when people feel the need to buy loads of items that they either don’t need or because they don’t want to wear the same shit every week. For ex- I had coworkers who bought new clothes from Shein almost every few days because the items were just cute despite how they complained that they had no more room for new clothes/items. Mind you, I had 8 shirts and I didn’t mind wearing the same shirt once a week. Companies need to be held accountable, but consumers do need to think reevaluate their spending habits on fast-fashion items.

    • @Siena12345
      @Siena12345 2 года назад

      @@k.d3983 i agree with you, especially because if individual consumers just blindly consume without considering the impact or even just considering how companies try so hard to convince them to consume. Like i guess it made it easier for me to recognize (and reduce) my consumer habits when i realized whichever company i was buying from didnt care about me or what i wanted at all, they are just doing everything in their power to get me to buy something so they (especially the top execs) get money. It felt gross to realize i was just playing into their game. Anyway, i think if we all became more conscious about our consumer habits, why we have these habits, and the impact these habits have, it becomes more obvious why blind consumerism is demoralizing and destructive. And ultimately, beyond not buying stuff blindly and its environmental impact, buying less hurts the companies. So i do agree that individuals have responsibility. More so i was saying that we can only contribute a drop in the bucket compared to the pollution and humanitarian crises that these companies create, and yet the companies try to convince us that we have individual power to really make a difference, and besides that not being true, its even more evil that they are just saying that so they can make even more money off of manipulating us all over again. Also, 100% i agree not to shame people for buying fast fashion because that is whats affordable, and i also know there can be issues with access to thrift stores that are actually affordable and close by and have clothes you actually like and that fit you. A thrift store by me has prices higher than shein so i can fully understand why someone would just chose shein at that point, and then another one by me is 90% just t-shirts from random events people have been to like "pie baking contestant " and 10% prom dresses from 10 years ago.

    just to add on to h&m’s wastefulness. i work in a warehouse for clothing, and one of the main brands that stores there is h&m. we normally pack the clothes in plastic totes to send to stores, but about 2 months ago we barely had any. apparently, that’s because they were still at h&m stores. turns out there was this whole season of clothes they didn’t get to sell (due to lockdowns) so they had just been sitting there. they had to send them all back to the warehouse, and while i don’t know what happened to those clothes, i wouldn’t put it past hennes and mauritz to just get rid of them all because they were “old” now

    Thank you so much for this video. I had quite a downer today as I found a deforested construction project for a luxury resort while going for a hike. Watching your video was healing, as it showed me what sustainability really means. Yes, our action matters. But yet, our environmental problems are a structural matter, with a lack of political action allowing companies to fooling us with false promises of green mass consumption (a contradiction in itself), while ruining our planet. I try to boycott as much as possible those global brands when going grocery shopping. However, as a university student I don’t have the money to buy organic and plastic free products from “really” sustainable companies all the time. However, something I’ve been doing for several years now is being vegetarian/since some weeks vegan, and buying seasonal and regional fruits and veggies at the farmers market, using a tote bag or basket for transporting it on my bicycle or by foot. This saves money, is healthy, supports locals, protects the environment and above all, it is wholesome to socially engage with your fav vendor on a regular basis. I am also up to read your further tips ❤

    When I went in for Advertising & Graphics Design at a local Community College and later on to an Arts School. I was stopped in my tracks ones day when my instructor used the phrase " Its like selling ketchup popsicles to a lady in white gloves" At that moment, I realized where the artistic expression stopped and the slick advertising part came in. The first year was very hands on, old school art where you made everything from scratch by hand and the 2nd year was a deeper and more intricate way to convince people how appealing some could be. It was at that moment I knew none of the advertising in the world was a good thing and my heart sank. That was 1999" to 2000" and I still feel the same. So sad how I realized, also, that if you wanted to use your art to make money you had to become part of the problem.
    Later when I went to art school, I wanted to bring attention to the amount of packaging every product has is way too much, ie, why are potato chip bags so big but the product amount is so little. Well, it's all for show so when you walk by it looks good. These fashion people, as you mentioned, do the same thing. I learned there is a panel that regulates product packaging and its a government office. In that moment I threw my hands up because, if it is government regulated, then there is no use in trying to change any of it because of the lackadaisical attitude of government to care. I did see an idea I had, used in this video, of refill bins. Like, if you need products someone could come by and refill everything that way there is no plastic waste but, we are a society of convience, and like you showed with quick sale fashion, why would people bother when they can just get something while they are out and about "real quick" and throw away later.
    My apologies for writing so much, its just that you hit a nerve I have had for a long time. I really appreciate you exposing the fashion industry as Hippocrites. When I would watch Absolutely Fabulous, a British satire show, I saw how the main character made her money off of PR, public relations, where ahe would attatch a new slogan, ie, save the planet, to fashion or one of her celebrity clients. I knew then, they all just functioned off of what would "sell" as you have so wonderfully portrayed in your video. Thank you for your work and great video! I hope to see lots more whistleblowing like this on real topics! Love To You Friend 💛🙏💛

I'm following all the court cases that are getting filed against him and others that are involved. I just want to say that I'm SO happy I found you/your channel.
