    Yep, this is one of ABBA's best hidden secrets, IMHO ! .. Great combination of a superb melody line and a rock feel .. Plus, there's those spot on lead vocals and harmonies .. This would be single-worthy for 99% of other artists, but for ABBA it ended up as another deep cut gem .. Please do another one of those gems, "Bang-A-Boomerang" ( Official Video ) soon !

    Yes, divorce and women's liberation (this was the 70s). At first, you think it's a bit judgemental towards the emancipated female protagonist, but then you realize it's not. By the way, Frida and Benny talked a great deal about feminism in some of their Scandinavian language interviews and how inspired they were by feminism, so also in their personal lives it was a theme.

    Its hard to have clear ABBA favorites more so then having favorite songs with other groups because all ABBA songs are so high quality overal, the overal standard is so great, but this one must be one of the coolest,and one of my favorite ABBA songs.. Everything in this song is so perfect, the drums are out of this world, the guitars and of course,as ever,the vocals. I really like that ABBA also could do more rocky songs,they were not limited to only do pop,one genre of music,they could do anything,and Hey Hey Helen proves that. For some for me weird reason,this song became a hidden gem,it deserves way more exposure then it got..

    • @medmon3476
      @medmon3476 Год назад +2

      Never heard this song live but you are correct - the production and singing is very sterile but I would argue it's not because it was rushed when it was recorded (it might have been rushed I really don't know for sure) but this 'sterility' was a deliberate choice to make it sound heavy (hence the heavy drum and guitar sound ) to match the heavy subject matter of divorce and single parent households which was a serious subject matter at that time .My own opinion is that they were successful in creating this heavy, ominous soundscape.

    • @herrbonk3635
      @herrbonk3635 Год назад +2

      @@medmon3476 Frankly, I did only hear it "live" on cassette tape. A friend that loved them taped their performances in Eskilstuna, in Gröna Lund (Stockholm), and perhaps other places as well. The sound was more raw and rough live. Like heavy rock or funk should be. Not this compressed studio-style sound.
      I belive most tunes was kind of rushed before they got their own Polar studio in 1978. Before that, they often got only one day a week at Metronome for the Abba project (although they also used Glenn studio and others). This meant they and their friends worked from around 10 am to lunch and then from say 14 (2pm) and well into the dark. Although pretty laid back and relaxed, they could not really finish many early songs like they would like, according to themselves.

    It is such a raw adult song - it's a pretty intense song with those lyrics about a single mum leaving a relationship. It's in the genre of the feminist movement at the time.

    Yes its ABBA's pre-divorces critical of divorce song from their 3rd album, just called ABBA, the "ABBA" album, not to be confused with ABBA - The Album.
    "ABBA" is a sort of mix between a compilation album and a double album with some new tracks. It is in some ways a re-boot album. Not only does the album 'ABBA' contain 'Waterloo', 'Ring Ring', 'Hasta Manana' & 'Honey Honey' again but major hits like Mama Mia, SOS, I Do (x5), I've been waiting for you, are on it.

      @@Lisa-M that one appeared much later with the 3 bonus tracks you mention, and others with just the regular album tracks, but there was one that took some hit songs from their first two albums and they were added as bonus tracks, which causes some confusion. The way to spot that earlier one is by the design of the "ABBA" logo which differs slightly in design to the later one. If you google on ebay you can see the varying designs, which though subtle can help you identify which one you have. There was also a "Deluxe Edition" with track listing the same as yours but with a DVD included as a double package. @@helenpeterson Fair enough .. If there are good quality videos existing for a given song ( official or non-official ), then I'd be more than happy to see them reacted to .. And yes, I totally agree that the Bang-A-Boomerang video does indeed show ABBA at their most joyful and happiest .. It always makes me feel good. 😊

    Your discovery of the meaning of the song is divorce, made me laugh, cause the majority of their songs are about divorce, splits, or marital issues.
