Hi all welcome back to another video Dereck Reacts back at it again! This time around we take a look at another ABBA reaction made possible by PATREON with "Hey, Hey Helen." ABBA this time around gets edgy with glam rock vibes, and funky rhythms. Benny is the highlight on keys for me on this one. See my reaction now!

This is one of my favorite ABBA album-only tracks.
Agree with you there! Keep forgetting that this album contained the track Intermezzo No 1! Love that tune 🙂
Benny Andersson said, they wanted to be rough and tough with this song, but, in his opinion, it came out as "the tamest thing ever". That's why the fans love ABBA. Even a "bad" song from the composer's point of view is such a pearl in their catalogue. Especially the innocent, but sharp vocal harmonies of A and A.
I think the ABBA guys music buds ,so to say,became more mainstream with the years and so they didnt later on appreciate as much their more,experimental,but just as good or even better in some cases,sounds in the first years of ABBA performing. I think Benny especially,are often too harsh with his ABBA work,too hard on himself. Can only imagine how good many of the songs they did but chose not to record on albums,,can be..what a treasure trove that must be...For me,this song,Hey Hey Helen is rough and tough enough...it has the best drum beat I ever heard in any ABBA song which says alot as their songs contains alot of that good stuff in the highest order...and I love the melody and arrangment of instruments,and of course,the super good guitar work in this song as well...its just SO good...

Here’s the magic of ABBA, 1975 was a transitional year for them. One can say that 73-75 brought them a glam rock identity which was so ingeniously transitioned into a new identity of lush sounds with the release of SOS. 1975 was a huge year for progressive rock with groups like Emerson, Lake, and Palmer. ABBA slid right in and stole the show. A year later they said “Let’s show the disco folks how things are done” and released Dancing Queen. True geniuses.
Very true. I feel the ABBA album was their Rubber Soul - the moment they found out new possibilities and started exploring them. And just like Rubber Soul it's a brilliant album.

Of all their hits and all the different tracks on all of there 9 albums I have to say Dance while the music still goes on and Another town Another train are my favourite songs of theirs.

"Gonna Sing You My Lovesong" with Frida leading and "I've Been Waiting For You" with Agnetha leading are two of Abba's prettiest ballads. "Bang-A Boomerang", "Ring Ring" (original version without the sax), "Another Town, Another Train", "Nina Pretty Ballerina" and "Tiger" are the best songs you have yet to react to.

This is an amazing song about a woman taking herself and her kids out of a bad marriage, back in an era when legal no-fault divorce was new, and frowned upon. Ground-breaking lyrics, and total 70s Euro-punk! ABBA inspired British 70s punk bands with this sound and subject matter.
Intermezzo No.1 is great instrumental.

Wow! This one has been a long time coming. One of my favorite early ABBA tracks along with SOS. I love the lyrics to this song especially the part where Agnetha and Frida sing “does it hurt when they ask for Daddy”. You asked for suggestions for other tracks from the same album and I recommend “Tropical Loveland”. While on their 1976 Australian promotional tour Frida dedicated the song to Australia when they performed it on a television appearance. “Bang-A-Boomerang” is another track off the same album which I think would be a fun one for you to react to. Obviously, a song with an Australian link as far as the title goes.
I can remember watching that show here in Australia, and it was absolutely brilliant ! .. I loved every song they did on it .. And yes, "Bang A Boomerang" is such a happy and fun song with a fantastic melody and harmonies .. It's one of my ABBA favourites, and Dereck will definitely love it too ! . Wayne

If you want more Benny on keys, you should DEFINITELY react to Intermezzo No. 1! Nina, Pretty Ballerina is great, too, but it's on the "Ring Ring"-Album. You haven't done a song from this album. It is their first, so you should take a look at it.
Yes, definitely. ABBAsolutely masterpieces 😁 He should react to "Arrival" also. I don't know why but when I hear "Arrival" tears come to my eyes by themselves. I know it's only instrumentation, but it's so emotional for me ❤️
@@mrfantastic8451 Yes, Dereck has some good songs to go. "Arrival" is just one of them. Tears come to my eyes too, when I hear it. The same with so many other ABBA-songs, especially when Frida sings them. Her voice touches me so bad. But also some songs with Agnetha in lead vocals make my eyes wet.

It was a single with Mamamia on the other side. We had it on the juke box in my father mother's pub,hotel back in the day. I still have the single of the box. I was only twelve here in Australia& they were huge back here then.

I was born in Sweden in late 60 , i was brought up with this and Abba totally over shined all others with a dominans that was @mazing , we love Abba untill forever

You should react to "Ring Ring Ring" that failed to make to Eurovision and ABBA had to wait for a second chance with Waterloo winning Eurovision. There you see a 7-member ABBA as Eurovision allows more artists on stage. So they added two guitarists and a drummer to the performance to make it 7!!!!
This is about Frida, the singer, who had two children in Sweden, when she went around the world, performing for Abba.
Watch out is probably the other really rocky one (even more so than this with a punk feel) to try!

This might be if I have to chose the best ABBA song,the one for me LOOOVE it...love the drums,electric guitar,the intro,all of it...its just so good...unfortunately,its a more hidden gems then most,that means among other things that very few youtube reactors knows about this wonderful song and few,very few,have done reactions on it..witch is a damned shame.....
One of my fave ABBA songs. It's so unexpected from them and it has always resonated strongly for me. Helen was a popular name in the 60s and 70s but I never hear it these days.

This record is my 2nd favorite album by them. Definitely check out Intermezzo No 1, Bang a Boomerang (one of my favorite examples of their harmonies), I DO, and I've Been Waiting for You (Agnetha's best vocal performance in my opinion).
I didn't even remember this one existed. Haven't heard it since the record was rather new. I was 12 and I believe this was the first record I bought.
As much older and divorced, I see it in a new light. I didn't even really know what they sang back then 😄

Imagine ABBA have been a pert of me since the release of Super Trouper I got the record as x-mas oresent.Hearing ABBA make impacton someone some 40 years later make me proud being s swede. You rock Derek.
SOS might be their best (loaded with hooks) pop song ever. In the late 2000s it was remixed it a digital dance classic that became a hit (again!) in the best (gay) nightclubs in Sydney, Australia.

Benny plays that clavinet so well. You should definitely listen to "Man in the Middle" from the same album. Benny's playin' the clavinet again, so funky like Stevie Wonder!
Even though tey are known for the hits which are very poppy, they have some album tracks that definitely vary their sound a bit. I'm a Marionette is another example where you don't expect a song that dark to be on an Abba album. This sound much more rocking then a lot of hteir other stuff.

"Bang a Boomerang" has a video! "Nina Pretty Ballerina" and "Tropical Loveland" don't but are definitely worth checking out, as is ABBA's only cover version, or trio of cover versions, the wonderful "Medley: Pick a Bale of Cotton / On Top of Old Smokey / Midnight Special" - go for it! x

There is a song that I love although it is not played as a typical ABBA sing called "Tropical Loveland" but it is a jolly tropical tune.

This one is always on my playlist. It was apparently inspired by a TV series called Helen a Woman of Today. It’s a brilliant album and I just love the album cover. The medley you mentioned with Pick a Bale of Cotton, Midnight Special and On Top of Old Smokey was a charity recording and the only time ABBA did a cover version.
Björn doesn’t remember being inspired by the show for the lyrics at all.

This was the B side to the single Fernando released in early 1976 in the U.K. Such a great contrast to the fantastic A side.
