    Best advice (this is mostly related to booking gigs and playing them):
    1. Never assume that an unanswered email means "no". Follow up as many times as it takes to get a reply. Always answer the phone.
    2. Be so nice to people (especially sound guys and promoters) that even grumpy people are nice to you.
    3. Ask for what you need but do so using rule 2.

    • @DamianKeyes
      @DamianKeyes  4 года назад +9

      Definitely great advice!! Generally in life, being nice to people is the best thing you can do. It really is life’s secret!

      @@DamianKeyes Yeah man. We had the meanest sound guy we've ever experienced last year and we were relentlessly showering him with love. By the end of the night, he didn't appologize but, he was definitely respectful and even gave us a compliment.

      Brilliant! 👏🏽 I’ve seen this go wrong so many times, it’s not even funny. Common curtesy is such an important asset, not only in the music biz, but life in general.

    One of my favorite bits of advice comes in the form of a quote: "I only write when inspiration strikes. Fortunately it strikes at nine every morning." Which is basically saying "I turn up to work". Pretty essential when you're self employed!

    • @matusgensky3764

      I remember that quote from The war of art by S. Pressfield, although the quote is not his I think.

    Best piece of advice I ever received:
    - Choose your battles.
    - Constraints don't hinder creativity, it rather focuses it.

  • @Outgardian

    Don Was, came to a class when I was at Berklee and he told us about when he had almost given up on music and was training for some horrible sales job. They were doing goal setting and Don was feeling awful. People stood up and said things like. "I'm gona sell this much tomorrow" or "I'm going to make manager in two years". He stood up and told everyone that with in the next five years he would produce a record for a Grammy winner. He did it within two years.
    Now his advice wasn't "set goals", although that was part of it. He reasoned that he was so terrified of ending up in retail sales that that it pushed him but also he wanted so badly to produce and work with exceptional musicians. The intense emotions that he associated with failing (pain) and on the other hand achieving (bliss) gave him the drive he needed.
    Boiled down I guess it would be: "Aim for bliss, with hell on your heels".

    "Invest in the tools to create your life's work" this is something im doing at the moment, many people are afraid to invest on their careers because all they think about is failure. In my opinion if you truly love what you are doing you will never fail, you are constantly getting wiser and more experienced.

    “Only spend time on the most important things” loved that one! The Best advice i am currently feeling connected to came from a Classical Voice coach i worked with early on in my singing career (she helped me with music school auditions and pushed me to sing Soprano material vs Mezzo). She said that i should always strive to stay true to the sound of my own voice even if sounding like someone else could get me work for the rest of my life. Because sounding like myself would be the only way i could have a sustainable career that would grow in time.

    One of the best pieces of advice I have heard is understanding its a team of people that helps make your music happen. A good team that supports you and your music and wants to see it succeed. I focused on the thoughts of the wrong people for too long, so many people are jaded about doing music as a career, they just never believe in it, or you. The right people will support you and love what your doing, and I needed to focus on growing that group.

    Great video! Thanks as always for the through provoking content.
    My best piece of advice is actually one I was given by one of my music instructors way back in middle school. "If you're going to make a mistake, make it loud." That idea of not being afraid to mess up and learning from it has been one of the cornerstones of my entire artistic journey -- and it applies to business, and all variety of other things as well.
    Of course...if you can practice a lot, go into things with proper preparation and planning, and NOT make the mistake...that's even better!

    Great practical advice. Thank you. Best advice given has been to take care of my health first (sleep, diet, good judgement)--we tend to take it for granted. Without it, we cannot pursue anything else. In so many ways, my wife is my guide and accountability buddy--my head's in the clouds and her feet are firmly planted on the ground. She anchors me, and has taught me a number of things you discuss here. DJ from NYC

    Best advice I recently had came from my partner: “don’t sell yourself short”. I never really bothered reaching out, always settling for less because I thought nobody really cared about what I did. All the small steps along the way that you hardly notice, they accumulate over time. Whenever I feel inadequate I try to imagine myself from 10 and 5 years ago, heck, even 2 years ago! It really is a night and day difference. And with that realisation comes the confidence to take active steps in building the next 15 years of my career 💪🏽

Tip 2 was absolutely crucial for me and is golden. I cant get anything done without time blocking.... and yes, flexibility is key. The best piece of advice I have ever been given is that my past and current projects are not my best asset... I am my best asset. It's so tempting to think that everything hinges on one project and if it doesnt deliver then that's it because that was my best work but most of the time I end up creating something even better later on.

Actually a week after this conversation I released the album and now after one year when I listen to those tracks I think it's satisfying.

    Hi Damian, great video! I'm wondering how your points of focusing on what's important and diversifying your portfolio (in terms if skills) can work together. If you're diversifying your skills do you not need to focus on several important things at a time? Figuring out which of these is more important - breadth vs depth - is a challenge for me currently!

    • @DamianKeyes
      @DamianKeyes  4 года назад

      Hey! Thank you 😊😊 I think in today’s market, making yourself slightly more diversified is a good thing.. but it definitely is a challenge. It’s all down to you, your goals, and the best way of getting there

    They best advice I've gotten is "If you take care of the music, the music will take care of you". Of course I'm completely broke but it sounds really nice. And I guess it has taken care of me, just not always. It's a wishy washy lover

    I really like your videos, Damo, and especially this one. The thing about "making yourself more employable" is so important, and I hope I can get this message across in my own music. Thank you

    I like how you’ve brought self development into the music world 😅👌 I think this comes under habits but mindset can also be changed in 21 ish days and I’ve found it such an important aspect of achieving success. Be positive, hang out with positive people and watch how you talk to yourself 😁

    Best piece of advice was to keep track of your activity with a spreadsheet. It keeps you accountable to yourself. It's one thing to say you did something like contacting venues and very different when you look down to actually see it. One of the better books I've read on habit forming is Atomic Habits by James Clear. One technique he advocates is habit stacking where you add a habit after a habit you already have. For example after you brush your teeth, go play scales for 15 minutes. Great content per usual.

      Great advice on habit stacking! It links in to holding yourself accountable doesn’t it - and it always feels good when you’ve scheduled your day and you then achieve it 😊😊

    AA for musicians....AA (artist accountability) basically living in renaissance type area where everyone is focused on music like Nashville, Brooklyn or any artsy town and help others accomplish their goals. All the while the artists are sharing their projects and becoming motivation tools and you get nice accountability buddies.

    I highly recommend the book "Psycho Cybernetics" as a guide to living, together with Napoleon Hill's "Think And Grow Rich", the New Testament Bible, and Stephen R. Covey's "The 7 Habits Of Highly Effective People". Music is more than a creative process, it is a lifestyle in itself. I think that this is what a lot of would-be to struggling musicians miss.
