  • Temperature And Steelhead Fishing In The Winter
Steelhead can be badly impacted by extremely cold water temperatures, but that doesn't mean they won't bite.
I've heard fishermen claim that water temperatures as low as 40°F make it impossible to catch steelhead, or that the fish stop biting around 37°F, or that you can't swing flies in water as cold as 45°F because the fish won't chase them there. Blah, blah, blah. I would have missed out on hundreds of winter steelhead if I had stopped fishing every time some know-it-all claimed it was too cold for the fish to bite.
When the weather and equipment are appropriate, I can catch just as many steelhead in 38°F water as I could in 54°F water.

You see right where that tree is? If you fish it in one of the most accessible places on the trib then you'll find it!
