Did he say,'entrepreneurship to bring these new technologies to the world' ? I want to bring new technologies to the world as an entrepreneur. super awesome.
The first rule of warfare is 'know your enemy'. If one starts by simply seeing them as villains, one will never truly understand them, and so one will never truly know how to defeat them, short of killing every last one of them. They of course make the same mistake, and the end result is a cinder for a world. I am not preaching that 'all you need is love', but I do maintain that the oversimplification of villainy leads to failure. If we want to coexist, they need to understand us, and us them.
Kurzweil and many others have indeed made this presentation many times in many venues. The difference here was Kurzweil's announcement of the start of the Singularity University. He felt it necessary however to devote the lion's share of the presentation to the idea of the singularity (which I surmise you have seen before), as even in an audience such as TED, there are many who are not familiar with it.
+Ying ~ Used to be 250, recently he's dropped to 150. Amazing how we already have the technology to grow younger, but we can't be bothered or are unaware to dedicate ourselves to it. With AI advancements, specifically intelligent assistants, we'll be aware of important stuff like this (the computer will know what we need and where to find out about it) and what we need to do will be summarised and worked into our plans.
The technological singularity is the runaway growth of our capability, not necessarily of our consumption of resources. Rather it is the approach towards ultimate resourcefulness.
Maybe once this university gets started humanity will actually start to improve itself and its environment. I'm looking forward to Jellyfish Technology tbecoming more mainstream.
I tend to agree. But I would also inject that we've never had the likes of TED before either, or the blogosphere, or any number of adjuncts to human communication. It is really up to us to foster that wisdom, in ourselves as much as others, and to use the medium we have at our disposal to communicate the same, however and wherever we may.
No you don't understand what he's saying: It's impossible to reach a plateau with technology, because technology is not just one thing, e.g. Chip size. For every advance it makes other advances possible. Read wiki's list of emerging technologies and you'll quickly see that this exponential growth is unstoppable. Read his Ray's predictions and he shows how it's going to happen. You share with many a human desire to have things remain the same, but that desire is never rewarded by reality.
Mr. K, mentioned his idea of the next 'paradigm', he mentioned 'self organized, molecular circuits', in a very assured manner of voice. Will admit he seems to be more able to have access to the papers that leads him to this, than I ever dream to be able to see. Seemed far from the possible applications a woman who researched the speed of light through material chilled to the lowest kelvin, that I never imagine reached first TED for me, that had me question its intent TakeCare JC
Pirates still go to the cinema. Advertisers still pay for services like product placement (not relevant to LOR specifically). The cost of CGI is going to crash through the floor. There are talented actors, talented screenplay writers, talented directors, talented photographers talented geeks and talented tecchies out there, that are unemployed and willing to make a movie for a handful of nickels.(except some tecchies) The concentration we see is a consequence of the means of diffusion.
I'd say he's already been proven right through the most difficult predictions. All he's talking about now is the natural course of our evolution. What's so epic about it?
0:18 Our intuition is not linear, it's exponential. If you ask a bush guy what he thinks lies in the middle of 1 and 9, he would say 3, because logarithmically, it does, which is a more native way for the brain to think. It is only if you ask us, who have studied math at school, and watched a lot of TED videos that would say that 5 is in the middle of 1 and 9.
@aahuggett Unfortunately, aging is also kind of exponential. Each year we age to a higher degree than the we did in the entire year before. In other words, generally we age more from our 39th to 40th birthdays, than we did from our 38th to 39th birthdays. Sorry to break the news.
There are orders of infinity. The mind is limited in it's extent, but unlimited in variety. And with increases in technology, the extent of mind may well find itself, infinite as well.
Excellent point. I also might add, it doesn't fit the business model of major universities either. Nobody will study what you're proposing due to the way profits are doled out. We will need an economic paradigm shift in order to allocate resources to the proper research projects. We will get there, just not at the speed Kurzweil envisions.
Sorry that I have a silly question: what software makes those charts/diagrams in this presentation. They look so beautiful and professional. Don't think Microsoft Office can make them easily. Are they made by software from the world of Mac?
I agree. I was talking about this issue with a Christian minister friend of mine recently. Exponential technological growth must go hand in hand with a growth in wisdom and ethics otherwise mankind faces a massive increase in existential risk.
they've estimated that we will have flying cars in the not so distant future about 2050, we already have prototypes. first we are making the transition from our current gas cars to electric cars that consists of carbon nano by 2020 which you seem to know already, making then 10x LIGHTER. This would help alot on our journey to making flying cars.
simple. imagine theres a specific region for, say, memorizing numbers in everyones brain. for some reason, in a savant this region occupies a bigger space than it normally would. hence, the savant can memorize numbers better than average. of course this means that he also performs less than average in other activities. basicly, this explains why some are better at math while bad at socializing, and in some you find the opposite.(its cliché, but i just wanted to illustrate my point there)
I am working on the album now, and the film is much more like a ten minute webisode, but it is looking great. If you are implying that art/creativity is secondary to economic gains, then chances are you are not an artist.
If Photovoltaic production doubles every two years and we are only 8 doubling (16 years) away from meeting 100% of our energy needs, why should we worry about our current dependence on foreign oil? Let the oil producing nations do the worrying.
My point has nothing to do with meaning. Alas, Immortals can have fulfilled lives for all they want, yet, as death would become unknown to them, they would loose their view on life as something precious in itself. Let me make an example: A person grown and raised in abundance will not notice how priviledged they are, if they dont know poverty. So, for a society of immortals, death would become something theoretic, abstract. Thus, an immortal society would ultimately lead to stasis.
Productivity 'per worker' is most definitely up, and up by a lot. That has nothing to do with the cause of unemployment. In a free market, money could be made by hiring those unemployed and putting them to productive work, so they would have job offers (though very likely at a lower wage than they might prefer). If they are not working it is because impediments have been put in place (for whatever reason) to inhibit the free market from functioning as it normally would.
I agree, except that id like to add a thought. intuition of a concept, as opposed to knowledge, is subjective. Therefore I need the polar approach. Because, and not in spite of, intuitive grasping of death is impossible.
so, the reason why technology "slows down" is because of money. for example, we don't have an abundance of solar panels, because once everyone got one in their home, you couldn't sell anymore, and you couldn't sell anymore electricity. technology is approaching a point where money is becoming obsolete, because we have the ability to create abundance for everyone. but we can't because in the monetary system, "profit" is the bottom line, and those that have the most money make all the rules.
Ok, 1st, this was supposed to be a reply "FAIL" that didn't get posted correctly. 2nd, as coincidence would have it yes, google is backing an endeavor of mine. 3rd, whether or not someone has been invited to talk at TED or not has zero bearing on what they are or aren't accomplishing in life. slow your roll.
Downloaded human consciousness - is that the goal? Fucking hope so, I'm getting on, and wish those science folks would get on with the immortality project.
Stem-cell generated body part replacements to increase life-span to sart with. Eventually downloading consciousness on to some kind of storage device - biological, digital, or a mixture. We consist of 2 kinds of information - our memories/personality/sense of self, and DNA. Once we learn how to save consciousness, then we have the leisure to create a body to house it.
I don't really think immortality is achievable - nor desirable in the grand scale of eternity... but we're talking practical immortality. Living for as long as you want, then choosing death. Biologically, we can extend life out several hundred years - but for the extra-long time spans, we're going to need to (and will have achieved) brain emulation on a viable scale.
Skynet..Has anyone seen Big Dog??....Its amazing but Bloody Scary!!. When I first saw that Robot/Creature thing and its Cousins I couldnt' belive what I was seeing and to think they have most probebly got far superior Prototypes in the works!! I dont know if its a good thing or a bad thing really?..I suppose it depends on whomever has control over the Technologys intentions, whether its used for our benifit or for more incideous ends. Anyways..Good short discussion from TED. Peace and all That.
I think a necessary first step starts with ourselves. We must learn to not ever allow ourselves to vilify those with whom we disagree. If we do, it demonstrates that we do not understand their perspective, for if we did, we would not see them as villains. That first step of mutual understanding is crucial before any meaningful dialog can be established, and is also necessary if we wish to be truly persuasive. In the words of Gandhi; "You must be the change you wish to see in the world."
No. I wouldt have posted a question, if i knew its answer. Still I think that polarity is intrinsic to physical existence, thus to understand death one must look at life, and the other way round. I know what the biological definition of life and death are, every human has an intuitive knowledge of being alive, but no one knows how to prove that one is, right now, alive. so, my question is, whether there is a definition of life can be possible without having to define death as well.
In a world fraught with poverty, in which half the world's population lives on $2.50 a day (!!!), it is a good thing that some of us produce more than we consume, else there is no hope for humanity. And that by the way, to produce more than one consumes, is the very definition of profit. Certainly speculators and criminals can get rich by means other than production and they call it 'profit', but that lie is not an indictment of those who produce the wealth of the world legitimately.
Horny4bears, no, it is not fake. Gandhi was very much an 'original thinker' and that means that he had notions and eccentricities, many of which do not jive well with the way most of the world thinks or lives. To me this makes him more human, more interesting. Gandhi is idolized, seen as a saint by much of the world. In truth he was every bit as much of a fallible human being as the rest of us. He was simply more inspired and possessed of much more courage and conviction than most.
The curve was decreasing for each year except from around when the Indian Ocean tsunami was where it goes up a little. There was a high production of some electronics components in some parts that were hit by the tsunami, which was temporarily taken out which in turn made those components more expensive worldwide. But I realize now that the anomaly in this curve is already in 2003, and the catastrophe was not until 26 December 2004, so it cannot be it unless the curve has been translated backwards in time by a couple of years or something.
What do you mean by 'must' - you are still under the assumption that there is something controlling our developing wisdom. There isn't, our great thinking has already been done, there isn't much new in the way of ethical reasoning since being done, whereas the progress of technology is a runaway process we struggle to contain. Perhaps we can develop AI that does our ethical reasoning for us, we will then just have to decide on a purpose. Continuation of the species?
Well, we'll still need stem cells and tissue engineering for organs and body parts damaged due to environmental factors - like car accidents or battlefield injuries. Eventually, our lifespans may stretch out far enough that we'll face environmental changes our bodies will need to adapt to. So we will have to actively and specifically mutate our own DNA to accommodate.
However, once we get to the point where we're no longer tethered to our physical bodies for the survival of our mind, what's the point really? Even if we do not have to bear brain death, we will have to institute some form of population control to prevent resource over-harvesting. For the long term, I can see "cyberspace" being the main residence for humanity - while real space may be a kind of timeshare deal.
Scary really that this will certainly make humans obsolete. We build our demise. We tie our own noose. Can we rebel? Can we, or will we become extinct?
He was a scientist, not an omnipotent god. See the difference between the two is when a scientist says something that is later proven to be incorrect it is not blindly clung onto for a millenia.
Couldn't disagree more. Our world of superstition and religion is still very much alive, but we have the irrational beliefs in Patriotism (large P), demagogery, consumerism, etc, and mankind's need to alienate and dominate is still pervasive. All our great thinking has been done? How come the most powerful nation on earth came to be led by Bush/Cheney, and I'm not too persuaded by Obama either.
that's because the world is severely undereducated on the right stuff - like transhumanism. Once people start becoming aware and thinking about it all - then it'll be better.
no offense taken, but you missunderstood my point. what i wanted to point out is, that life would not be discernible as something unique and valuable without its opposite. Then also the consequence of eternal life, given that a species achieves it, implies that the only way the population can keep from exploding is either stopping to breed, or starting to kill each other. My death, someday, will be my final contribution to humanities ongoing surival; but not at all what gives my life a meaning.
But that's the point, I do not wish to coexist with people whom perform mass-slaughter for the Golden Calf, I want to see them tried and convicted for their crimes. As a principled opponent of capital punishmeny I would like to see them languishing in gaol, but if they did end up on the gibbet, I wouldn't protest too loudly. It might make the next Principe think twice before blowing the ram's horn.
How much of this Singularity University will be delivered in the form of MOOCs? I don't mean xMOOCs but cMOOCs. cMOOCs to promote an interplay of ideas from a broader number of participants. THIS would seem to be a natural expectation from a University that seeks to look at best use of technology for the benefit of humankind.
i just don't see it going any other way, given the trends. i have asked those same questions that you have, but i really don't have an answer... i mean we'd have to completely change our value system, the way we think about human reproduction and understand how prolonging our lives will not hinder our evolution, but force us to take control of it. we really won't have a choice. check out Juan Enriquez: tech evolution will eclipse the financial crisis. it's on my channel favorites
why not, exactly? of course no one wants to die in the immediate future (excepting suicidals and suchlike), but think on the following: If there was no death, would we know what being alive means?
felt you'd help me with a issue I had with others telling me about Mr.G., doing eurine-oligy or something of sorts, his view of women was non-christian like, as in open love, multiple partners, by supposidly 2 people doing research and another documentary had some family related to him. Both people basically were saying stuff I never heard of? had hope if you knew this was fake. it'd be appreciated.rather hear it from a person, than sifting thru ppl hiden behind web sites Peace JC
The technology is moving faster that the market can profit from it. Two of the largest websites in existance, myspace and youtube cannot seem to turn a profit. We seem to be moving into a new paradigm where profits cannot be the motivating factor in creation of new information technology, music, software, art, movies, ect. How Awesome is that. Information is what is exchanged not currency.
I'm afraid I'm no expert on Gandhi, but I know that he has been romanticized by Western punditry, and wasn't as opposed to use of force as we have been led to believe, he simply did not believe it to be defensible due to the cost/benefit situation that would have ensued. As for not behaving in a Christian manner, I'm not so sure that is such a bad thing, and can't see value in passing judgement on his intimate relations. He hastened the end of colonial rule, albeit with mass death as a result.
Ray Kurzweil is either going to be proven stunningly, amazingly right, or he's going to be proven stunningly, laughably wrong. In making such epic predictions there's really no middle ground! If I had to put money on the table I'd bet against him on the grounds that extrapolation is not one of the exact sciences.
@@irfanulkarim4992 It continues, 2024, we have moved to the sixth paradigm, she was right, because she is a billionaire, he has more control over the companies' R&D projects than we do.
Utterly fascinating. I strongly recommend his book, "The Singularity is Near". Really mindblowing stuff.

True.

It may sound sick, but that's how you were grown.
There are more, the figures are seriously doctored.
All these simulated and tested regions are related to perception and mapping the trail of thought - not what thought and self awareness actually is.
Really? How many digits of pi can you calculate mentally?
How long a text can you memorize in one reading?
there's no stasis in nature. everything has to ripple.
@ThreeSC Wow, you really missed the point. Technological singularity has nothing to do with infinite quantities, oil or population. Try again.
Scary really that this will certainly make humans obsolete. We build our demise. We tie our own noose. Can we rebel? Can we, or will we become extinct?
not so long ago i didn't think it would happen. not even in 500 years.
I don't see any evidence for parallel growth in human wisdom or ethical political leadership, which provides mankind with a dilemma.
when i first heard of morrs law from Ray, i would figure that mores law would have its own morrs law lol
I enjoyed this and found it fit nicely into my reflections on a book I am reading, advanceducation.blogspot.ae/2014/02/the-abundance-of-big-data.html
A huge deal of the brain power is devoted to subconscious processes.
i just don't see it going any other way, given the trends. i have asked those same questions that you have, but i really don't have an answer... i mean we'd have to completely change our value system, the way we think about human reproduction and understand how prolonging our lives will not hinder our evolution, but force us to take control of it. we really won't have a choice. check out Juan Enriquez: tech evolution will eclipse the financial crisis. it's on my channel favorites
why not, exactly?
of course no one wants to die in the immediate future (excepting suicidals and suchlike), but think on the following: If there was no death, would we know what being alive means?
@aahuggett He has traveled at light speed.
felt you'd help me with a issue I had with others telling me about Mr.G., doing eurine-oligy or something of sorts, his view of women was non-christian like, as in open love, multiple partners, by supposidly 2 people doing research and another documentary had some family related to him.
Both people basically were saying stuff I never heard of?
had hope if you knew this was fake.
it'd be appreciated.rather hear it from a person, than sifting thru ppl hiden behind web sites
Peace

Anyone else noticed how much Ray Kurzweil is aging more than most do on these videos over the years?
He’s doing ok on 2020
Want to see what progress looks like. Check out Billy the Kid, Gasoline Vapor, here on You Tube.
It continued till 2017. Latest update.
@@irfanulkarim4992 It continues, 2024, we have moved to the sixth paradigm, she was right, because she is a billionaire, he has more control over the companies' R&D projects than we do.
