I have had that aircraft and the DC-10 super tankers over my house during local fires. Always glad to see them along with all the other air resources and ground equipment. I'm a retired wildland firefighter of 32 years with the US Forest Service.
Hey simple flying, what I love about your upload schedule is that you upload every day, and at the same time perfect for when I get back from my run to cool down.
The Queen is an amazing plane! I worked on one during my entire career with Northwest Airlines. Glad to see she's saving lives in her new role of service.
The 747. Queen of the skies. Just look at it. Such a legend. Never has been disputed in its iconic position. A pioneer widebody passenger transporter, the best freighter, a VIP transporter, a space shuttle carrier, a dreamlifter, a firefighter, a queen, pls. add more to it guys.
I haven't this Air Tanker in operation yet, but when I was based at CFB Comox, on Vancouver Island, back around 1990, the brought the Martin Philippine Mars water bomber for a flyby drop, extremely impressive, soaked us all. Where the Abbotsford Air Show takes place is the home of Conair Water bombers and they have various types of water bombers, including c-130 Hercules and SF2 Fire Cats, converted Tracker Navy aircraft fitted with turbine engines now.
Supertanker went out of business at the end of summer 2021, the plane was sold, another company has purchased a front loading 747 w00 and stated converting it and getting it certified! So the net says. The sooner the better for the west coast. Fire season is well underway. Pretty cool seeing it in and out of the Gilbert/ Mesa airport in Arizona.
I live in the Phoenix area. I was watching FlightAware. That aircraft was circling Marana,AZ this week. We have numerous fires in the state. However, it did not seem to venture out to the fire lines.
I just finished spending over two decades in California. I’m aware of the Spirit of John Muir and happily have not seen her in real life. This video informed me with lots I didn’t know in a short time. Thanks! This video also reinforced a non-fire reason I’ve heard to heed evacuation orders: Leave so you don’t get knocked to the ground, injured, or doused by aerially delivered fire retardant.
@@aviationlba747 can you please shut your Boeing fanboy ass up. I knew one of yall would say something like that. So here if the 747 is queen the much prettier a380 is king and an225 is god. Lol just stay out your feelings😂🤣 And dont like your own comment that's weird.😔
Impressive airplane! How do they fill it with water? it takes over a lake like other similar airplanes or different Way? How much time for a water refill?
I saw it today in Norther California being filled with fire retardant. It takes approximately 45 minutes to fill. The tanks are pressurized, so it shoots the retardant strait down. Amazing.
There is a lot of turblance when the air craft flies over the drop site. The smaller aircraft have almost no turbulence when they fly over a drop site.
How interesting i thought it's home was in Sacramento at Mcclellan Business Park? Throughout the year and a half that i've been working there i've always seen it parked there.
I Wonder If for Long trips, Like to Asia or Europe, would the plane fly fully loaded, or without any retardant loaded for increased Speed and range, and loading the retardant closer to its destination?
The 747 is cool but having flown BAE 146-200 I have to say that it's probably the best med/large sprayer out there. We used to call it the baby jumbo and the jumbolina 😐
@@bhall9537 actually clearance was a issue. For starters the way it had to be mounted created aerodynamic issues and it also affected it's thrust output. Even though GE made it fit for testing purposes clearance was a major problem and it could never operate with any kind of weight and that's just the begining. You'd have to redesign the wings, tail section and more. Then when you factor in the heavier weight of the older design. It'd be cheaper and faster to simply redesign the 777 fuselage to accommodates a second level.
Fun fact! This plane is based in a airport near my house it’s about 3 miles away and I always see it flow over my house at less than 3000 feet. How cool is that ?
This makes me sad because the last 747 just rolled off the production line and now that part of the factory is done producing the queen of the skies. What an amazing era of aviation and great and reliable aircraft.
It'd be interesting to know how much retardant it can carry. Many years ago, I flew DC-7s that were converted to tankers, they could carry 3,000 gallons of retardant, roughly 30,000 lbs. The 747 can carry a bit more........
I think the company needs more 747 super tankers at least 20! For worldwide. We all know that the 747 are retired. But there are also retired a340. 767.you need big planes for this job because there are more fire s coming.to take care off the fire fast you need more bigger planes!
You are right. The company that owned this plane sold this 747-400 global firefighting aircraft (minus the RDS) to National cargo after financial difficulty during covid. National re-converted it to a freighter for delivery service in operation currently. They also sold the retardent delivery system (RDS) to another company, who is currently finalizing it's conversion of a 747-200 with the RDS system that was initially in the 747-400 in the video here. After testing and government approval, we will hopefully see this enter service this year so we will once again have a 747 global fire tanker back in the air.
Its kind of a odd choice to me. While it is a good aircraft, it also have an operational empty weight of 185 tons (original spec). A smaller aircraft tend to have a better balance becasuse they are not made for that large of a range. A smaller aircraft would also be able to land at a smaller airport. The number of airports that can take a B767 or a A330/A300 is accessible to far more airports. Would also have two planes for the cost of one.. While, yes, to half the capacity. There is a reason why the medium size wide body is dominating as air refulers. The bottle neck really seams to be the turn around and refill time
Still not as cool as the Martin Mars. With a big enough body of water nearby a fire, those magnificent old bombers could deliver way more water way faster because they don't even need to land to refill the tanks. While the 747 is busy getting to a huge airport to refill the Mars could go skim the nearest lake repeatedly and loiter around a fire literally all day.
this is what australia should get !!! rather than hiring craft!! from overseas 🤔🤔🤔 aspecialy there are so many 747s sitting in desert around the world going to waste

As Australia approaches the fire season, I hope to see it serve this Country.

It could really make a difference...
Maybe the UN should buy a couple of used 747-400.
Such an amazing aircraft. Thanks for the video. I do believe the fire boss is more cost efficient in operational costs and per gallon drop cost.
How interesting! I'd have loved to know more about how it loads up water/retardant, how long it takes, how it's released, what the retardant is, etc.
I saw itt do a drop near cloverdale CA in 2017. hree years later a wilfire devastated the other side of the valley.
So who operates the DC-10 version?

You left out the most important thing on how long it takes to fill up with water
We could definitely use that old girl here in Arizona right now!
really would love to hear how can 747 get cheaper drop per gallon with its massive body and 4 engines.
Fewer runs required vs smaller aircraft, it has a wider & longer water or retardant drop pattern per load.
