Thank you for this tutorial. You saved me $$$$$. I fixed my 45 year old Kitchenaid stand mixer. Took it step by step. Works great now.
Cheers, man! Nice clear concise instructions with excellent video and audio quality. That's an extremely rare sight for tutorial videos. My mixer is back! God bless!
You are welcome! Glad you were able to fix your issue! If there is anything we can help you with in the future please let us know.
I used this procedure to setup my machine. Thank you to share your knowledge to rest of the world. God bless you.
You are a wonderful teacher 👍
If there is anything we can help you with in the future please let us know.
Thank you so much for this tutorial!! I needed this to help me replace the control plate on my Artisan mixer. I also replaced the board while I was at it. Now my mixer works just like it supposed to. I couldn’t have done it without this tutorial, thank you!!!
Thank you. Found it very helpful, especially as there weren't many videos specific to this. I was able to get away with just tightening the screw for the speed lever fix. All went pretty smooth until I was replacing the rear cover and pinched the power wire, shorting out the machine! That led to another video, trip to Harbor Freight, and wire repair. All is well now. Needless to say, be careful tucking the wires back in and putting on the plate.
This was great! Followed your instructions step by step (except I used hemostats to hold the spring) and the mixer is back in business. My wife is happy!!
Glad to help!
That was great: solved my problem. I had been fumbling about with the screws back there trying to figure something out; and, my mixer would not work anymore. Well, runs like a charm, now! Thank you very much!! :)
Mine wouldn't turn on. What I found was simply dirty contact on the points of that copper bar across the bottom. Cleaned the contacts. Works!! View @ 6:08.
Our mixer was turning on from the off position, we took off the controller cleaned the parts reattached and found a short in ground wire, all fixed now. Thank you for the great tutorial.
Wife's mixer is working again. Much appreciated!!!!!!
Really good, helped me to fix my wife's KitchenAid. Thanks for sharing
This is a great tutorial, but I thought I'd share my experience. Our stand mixer suddenly stopped working and tripped the GFI circuit in our kitchen outlet. Once we confirmed that the outlets were working, the stand mixer still wouldn't start. So I searched the internet and found this tutorial. However, the problem wasn't with this part. The problem was with the carbon brushes located on each side of the main housing (the big black regular screw heads). I took these out and found them to be quite dirty. I brushed off the residue and reinserted the brushes and the machine worked. You have to be careful, the brushes are rectangular pegs, but one side is chamfered at a 45 degree angle. Pay careful attention which direction the angled side is facing when you pull it out. It has to go back the same way. The other side will be the opposite. For example, the right side brush had the angled side pointed in the upper left corner, the left side was pointed in the lower right corner. Anyways, check and clean your brushes first. If that doesn't fix it, then give this part a try. Hope this helps!
James, thank you so much for your comment. My mixer was having some weird issue that I suspected was the kevlar gear (it was) but I must have replaced the brushes in the wrong orientation when checking them. your comment reminded me to check those, and sure enough I had them the wrong way. thank you again!
Thank God, I saw this comment. It was just what I needed to get my kitchen aid mixer fixed.
My mixer was running intermittently up to speed 6, and would not start below 6 unless you moved the speed control to max and then slow it down. It was suggested that I needed a new speed control. Taking the rear cover off and observing the contacts I discovered the main contact was not always making contacting. You could see small arcs across the contacts , especially in the lower speed range. Before the new control as suggested I slightly bent the contact on the control board upward to make better contact and the mixer runs just as new. My experience, your may be different.
Big help! Thanks for ending my search!!
Excellente explication , excellente présentation, un grand merci, je n'arrivais pas à trouver les réglages .Thank you so much.
First off , THANKS for this video. It has helped many of us . Secondly, should I be able to measure some value of ohms from the motor winding while I'm working on the control plate? Right now I get open circuit from the TWO motor leads. Thanks
Hi, good video, thanks. I am having a problem with the mixer not even starting at this point. its almost new. The wife was cleaning it and it tipped over on the counter and fell on the speed control lever. i fixed the control lever, but it still won't start up. Any ideas on where I should start, and what I probably need to replace? IE, speed control plate or chip on top of the speed control plate? Thanks again.
Quick question. Is it possible to test the motor by connecting the line and neutral wires directly to the red and white wires on the motor, thus bypassing the phase and control plate? I have a dead machine and not sure what to buy? I have checked the brushes and OHM tested the cord, all good.
Great video - thanks a lot. Helped me mount the speed control plate and adjust the speeds to their proper setting.
Try fixing a Kitchenaid mixer in the UK, you can't find spares anywhere. I had a similar problem with the speed control arm slipping back and not switching off. I discovered it was the flat spring that goes under the lever was missing and when I applied tension to the lever it stayed in the stop position. The problem is trying to find spares, I wanted a new gasket but couldn't find anything beyond mixing blades and bowls.
Excellent video. From Colombia , have a Nice day!!
I replaced both the governor and speed control plate on my mixer. Your instructions were really good. I had to loosen the stir speed adjusting screws more than the 3/8" factory setting. I actually had to go out to 9/16"; that's about a little more than 1/8". Is that normal? At first I thought the governor wasn't fully engaged, but after checking it again, I found it to be seated. The governor must be a little bigger than the original one. I was wondering if something was wrong since I had to adjust it out so much. It runs well at that setting, so everything seems to be fine. Thanks!
That's not unusual. Glad we could help you get it repaired!
AppliancePartsPros: Thanks for your further comments and have a good day!
You too! Glad we could help!
Thank you for this video 😭 you saved my kitchenaide!
Hi, thank you for your video. I’ve fixed my KitchenAid Heavy Duty (uk) because of your video. Can I ask, are the RPM’s the same in the UK as they are in the USA? I cleaned my speed control plate with 70% alcohol as it had managed to get gunk on the contact plate areas and with a little re-adjustment all seems well to what it was and back to normal.
It looks like I lost the locking plate (05:45) (where we set the high speed), as I don't see it in my mixer when I opened it? My mixer doesn't stop even when its on off position and even at the lowest speed, it runs faster. Doesn't the locking plate come with the actual speed control plate WPW10119326?
a guy on tiktok diagnosed my problem for me... but shipping the unit to him in Tennessee was really expensive ... so I called a shop here in carlsbad and over the phone he quoted me $200. I found the part on Amazon for $16 and your video .... and I have my machine working again While I understand that the Carlsbad guy has rent to pay.... $200 is completely unreasonable for a 5 minute fix and a $16 part. I have to wonder how many people have thrown their units out because of quotes like this. Had he quoted me $50 or $75 I probably would have paid it and not thought twice about it
thank you for your helpful video! (im off to make sausage now)
And what if we weren’t quick enough with the towel? Do you sell a tiny replacement spring?
What is your model number?
Do i have to have the screw spring on for it to work ? Thanks .
Yes, you will need to have that part installed for the unit to work properly.
Excellent video. I was hoping you would comment on the paper seal. At removal, you could see it was broken and you repaired it with a little bit of tape on replacing it. What is the purpose of that ring?
I think it keeps flour out of the motor
Any videos on how to fix the spring if it popped out?
Awesome video,is the mot well explained on this matter on RUclips, easy on every way, very good price on you site thank you, keep doing those fenomenal job for all of us,just excellent...from Puerto Rico!!! 👍
Can you tell me if inside the speed control plate is any tipe of diode or it's just like a bridge between contacts?
Can you please provide your model number?
Hi, very good video, I have a kitchenaid bought in the USA but I live in a country with 220V, therefore I use it with a transformer.
Now I have a problem, it only works at maximum speed 10. What do you think is the problem? If necessary, where can I order the parts ?
It's a Kitchenaid, Super Heavy Duty model : KSM50HDPBK.
Thank you in advance
From 60hz to 50hz the motor runs slower, so it is necessary to check the centrifugal switch weights which must stop the motor through the adjustment plate. Very rare, the small circuit, above the plate, if it is defective leads to this failure= impossibility of adjustment, but appliance will be able to say more , Good day !
Great video. Thanks for posting. I successfully replaced the speed control plate; however, the mixer will not turn off when the speed control lever is put in the off position. When plugged in, the mixer automatically flips to the 2 or 3 speed position making it impossible to turn off without unplugging the mixer. Can you advise me on what is causing this? I'm wondering if the spring on the speed control switch is not applying enough tension to the plate to keep the lever in the off position? Thanks for any advise you can offer.
Brint Driggs ñ
Thanks for your feedback, Brint. It sounds like the plate may not be adjusted correctly.
Brint Driggs the screw holding the lever is loosening.
I didn’t unplug it before taking the brushes off and there was contact with the outside of the mixer. There was a big spark. Did I just blow the motor? I originally took it apart to replace worm gear. Which I did successfully but now it won’t run. I could hear the motor running before but not anymore
Very good video. My mixer motor was noisy and reving up and down. I replaced this board and now it runs like normal
Do replacement speed control boards come with the locking plate
Are you referring to the black plate with the terminals? If so, yes. If you're in need of a separate part, the model number of the mixer would be needed.
That "spring locking mechanism " or "locking plate" as he called it must not be essential to the mixer because my older (15 year old) and newer (1 month old) mixers never had one and I haven't seen it sold with any speed control plate.
I have a very old model of this mixer. The mixer won’t turn off, it just springs back and keeps mixing. Do I replace what you show here or is there just an adjustment I need to make?
What is the model number of your mixer?
excellent explanation, although I have a question those adjustment measures work for the artisan model or are they different? Thank you
What other possibilities are there for no power? I replaced both boards and still have no power to mixer. Any help woulb be appreciated, the mixer i am trying to fix is a keepsake from my best friends late mother and i would love to get it running again.
Did you try replacing both carbon brushes?
Did you fix your mixer?
Our Classic Kitchaid mix was making a rubbing noise, so I took the back cover off. I discovered a nut had fallen off and the other side was loose. I could not reach the thread to put the nut back on. I took the mixer speed control plate off and when I did I counted the number of turns. I had not seen your video yet. I put the plate back on and used the measurements you gave (3/8 & 9/32). It would not turn on. I adjusted the screws, but still nothing. The bottom screw is not long enough to get a measurement of 9/32. Any thought on what I can do? Thank you!
Are the screws with springs for adjustments for speed before replacing?
It's stuck on one speed.
This is a great video as you may have just told me what I did wrong while trying to clean mine and put it back together wrong. But I cant get over the mechanics gloves. Whats up with that?
I had to replace the speed governor as it only worked at top speed. My wife plugged it into a 220 outlet. While I was taking the plate off the end of the spring got bent and then it bounced inside so I had to dismantle everything to put the spring back in place. I then reassembled everything but now I am getting no power at all. Not sure if something isn’t secured enough on the speed control plate. I’ve tried to crimp down on the wires so they aren’t moving. Am I missing anything?
Hello I have a Kitchenaid Pro Hd mixer. The head was loose so I went in and took out the board etc and tightened the screws at the back.... I just went to use it and it is running really fast and then shutting off... it won't run on a slow speed. Can you tell me what I did wrong when putting it back together? thank you!
when we power the mixer on it starts to turn but within a second or so it shoots out sparks from the back and it trips the gfci outlet. would a damaged speed control plate cause sparks? if so, I found my fix video :)
You will need to check for damaged wiring and the speed control plate, also check the motor brushes for damage.
It seems my back cover is too close to the speed control plate. Whenever I touch the back cover, the mixer slows. Is this a typical problem? How can it be fixed?
Without knowing what you have, I would suggest posting the problem along with the appliance model number on our repair forum and the techs can help you troubleshoot the problem. forum.appliancepartspros.com/
Hey, thanks for the response. I think the previous owner messed the thing up by not putting the locking washers back on the threaded rods that hold the motor field assembly in. The nuts were backing out, allowing the field assembly to slop around. The machine was knocking and grinding. There are lots of other issues too, but I think I am getting it back together. I hope.
Hello, my mixer is making a grinding noise. Did you get yours to stop? Thanks
Mostly. I just replaced the locking washers on the threaded rods that hold the field assembly in place. There are still some little bits of broken magnet that are getting ground up inside, and eventually I'll most likely need to replace the field assembly.
Hi teacher. I have a mixer, the same as without load, it works perfectly well, but when I put it to work making pizza dough, for example, after a short time of work, it begins to have ups and downs in speed, and when placing it on high it does not suffer any change. reducing the speed from top to bottom it stops at 4 and you have to keep going down to turn on
Excelente !!!
Muchas Gracias!!!
Mine works except in the first or lowest speed. Is it an adjustment or bad plate
Mixer making a very loud, high pitched noise. When I press against top of speed plate the sound stops. Have just re-greased and noise persists. Any ideas?
What is your model number of the mixer?
Would be. Ice to see what steps you took to actually troubleshoot out the fuse and components-where to ohm amd the like.
Would a faulty speed control plate to cause the mixer to always be on
MY MIXER ONLY WORKS ON HIGH SPEED. WHAT DO I NEED TO REPAIR?
brushes are good contact is touching still wont turn on any suggestions
Thnks very helpfull, itn worked for me. The only problem is I cant reach 15 reps in 15 seconds, I tried to adjust de screw but it only get 12.
15 reps in 15 seconds would be the proper speed for the "Stir" speed setting. This is supposed be adjusted using the two screws at the top of the speed control plate. The single screw at the bottom is used to fine tune the higher speeds (3 reps per second for Speed-6) after the "Stir" speed has been adjusted.
@@peteduncan921 Thanks sir, very helpful. I'll try.
Is there a thermal fuse.. my mixer doesn't do anything.. what do I check first before buying parts?
Hi, I was working on this and the spring shot back into the mixer. How do I hook it back on?
If you can see the spring up inside the housing, you may be able to hook it with something and pull it back out. Maybe a piece of stiff wire with a short hook bent at one end would work. If you can't see the spring to grab it, you can remove the top of the mixer from the lower part. There are "re-greasing" videos online that show how to do this.
great video and understandable
At 4:20 the video says the size (in inches),. what it's size (in mm). Thank you
I searched and it came up on a conversion chart, 3/8 inch is 9.525 mm!
Can the spring be replaced?
What is the model number of your mixer?
@@appliancepartspros ksm5pswd
I figured out how to put the spring back, but the small white plastic piece that pushes back and forward with the speed control broke. I don't know the name of the piece. I laid it down on the back and it broke.
Also, my mixer won't turn on at all now.
Hi , my kitchen Aid was kept for long , long time .When i used it a smoke comes out at the back and loud sound too. Can this be fix . What is the cause of it ? Thanks
Hi, after two attempts, I finally let the spring slip out and now it is in the mixer. What do I do? Help;
going to have to fetch it, possible dissembley to get it, also the other end needs to be hooked in to place, idk if it came unhooked.
I am near to retrieving a spring from a K45 I took off speed control plate, seal and removed electrical cable In that area below is where your spring may be
my machine is a bit different when it comes to the power cord. it hasn't worked as I plugged it in a socket there was a spark and stopped working. where can I get parts in south africa
how can I determine if the control plate isn't woking? I see black hot wire going in - but how can I tell if it doesn't work.....the machine doesn't come on at all. thx
The pin on the base part of mine is coming out all the time. Why and how to fix it ? Mine is pretty new.
Did you figure it out?
@@BringItOn31124 Yes, i did. But the construction with that pin on mine is not good.
@@josephinenguyen6055 I'm assuming you're talking about the hinge pin that the mixer head pivots on. It's just a pin and a screw that holds it in place. What kind of construction problems are you having?
My kitchen aid mixer moter is pulsing.. I have a video I can show you... could it be a faulty goverour?
My setting 1 is off how many revolutions should be on setting 1 & so on ?
For most of these mixers, I believe that the revolutions should be 1 per second (60 per minute) on the lowest speed setting.
My mixer would only run on speeds 1-6 so I bought a new control plate. When I took the back cap off I noticed white wire on lower right side was disconnected. Put it back on and runs great. so now I have a spare controller if it fails in the future.
We're glad to hear you got it fixed!
Where do I buy a locking plate?
My Kitchenaid will not start on the lower speeds, once I set it all the way up to fast, it will start... I can then slowly back it down to the lower speeds and it will slow down and continue working. Will this repair fix this problem?
You could first try adjusting the two Philips screws on either side of the top of the control plate. Mine were WAY too loose, and I lost the first three speeds. Once I tightened them securely into the mounting posts, I got all my speeds back.

can we convert 110 volts mixer into 220 volts please reply
You have to change the whole motor. Better you buy it 220 volts. ( or, you can buy and use converter transformator , you have to buy a minimum 1,5 time bigger then the wattage on the machine, but not recommended this way) So, you need these for full convert
1 x Armature
1 x Field Coil Assembly
1 x Phase Board
1 x Power Lead

How to convert 110v mixer to 220v
hi how much is the measurement of the screws in cm not in inches?
Lee Ramos did you got an answer?
7.5mm worked for me. measured from secrew till base of mix plate
i reccomend eye protection or replacing the back cover before turning on, when the governor throws its weights its not pretty.
Thanks for the tip, hope the video helped you get the mixer fixed!
how do we know that the motor brush need to be replaced?
We have a repair video for the motor brushes here ruclips.net/video/PvC3nP2RJ7c/видео.html You may need to replace the brushes if they have worn down to the point the motor is not running.

è fantastico, ma io vorrei trovare la scheda di controllo come posso fare? grazie
Se vivi negli Stati Uniti, puoi acquistarlo da noi.
Great video, but holy crap, you should remind people to unplug the machine when adjusting the speed. That’s live mains voltage in those wires back there!
I work live all the time, with the right safety equipment and tools that are insulated. That being said I still short something now and again, it's wise to wear safey glasses. So YES, always unplug.
Which is thread? 3.3L stand mixer thumb screw.
this " How To" sure beats the hell out getting a bigger hamm er. Thanks
My mother's mixer was acting up. She got it back in about 1984 and was just about to toss it. She was really upset. It kept shocking her and then finally wouldn't even run. I took the back cover off and found that the motor control plate was filthy. I cleaned it with an old tooth brush. Then I removed the brushes and blew out the brush holders. I put the brushes back in and tried it out. It started running. It runs through all the settings now. It does sound kind of loud. It may need the grease changed. Not bad for a mixer that is over 40 years old. I wonder why it has worked so well and lasted so long. Oh. It says that it was made in Ohio. Now I understand.
After replacing this part my mixer keeps buzzing when turned off.
Adjust the speeds 11:05

What is your model number of the mixer?
That's right, kids. The only thing keeping your $400 mixer from chewing through the insulation on the main power lead is a thin bit of cardboard.
If you have any questions just let us know!

Why would you replace this particular part? It is just a plate with electrical contacts. No electrical nor mechanical use that would put any sort of "pressure" on this item ...
Mine cracked, cheap plastic. The screws were loose, so it wasn't getting good contact. I lost the lowest 3 speeds.
everything was put back correctly, all new parts, has power, won't turn on!!!

so you think you need to show people how to remove attachments and the bowl but then let them dig into the speed control? Think about what you are doing.
Wait. What? I bought a new control plate and it does not have that spring behind the screw. You mean I'm supposed to take part of the old control board and put it on the board I just bought? That's nonsense! I assumed it was an upgraded design. BTW- My new control board was defective, the arm was bent and the breaker points would not make contact. Poor quality control. And now they just leave the screw spring off?
Yes you would have to put the spring on the new board. It isn't part of the new board. If there is anything we can help you with please let us know.
how do you know if the governor doesn't also need replaced.
