1987 I was 17 years old living in the projects in Camden NJ with my family. There was Black dude 2 years older than me who wore a trench coat in the summer; he called himself ‘Stone’. He looked like he was 30 years old. Stone would buy beer. Stone, my buddy Johnie and I would drink the beer in front of an old dry cleaners and play Prince, James Brown, Isley Brothers, the Gap Band and the Ohio Players on a boom box. The cops didn’t bother us because we never caused any trouble. One day while we drinking beer in front of the dry cleaners, Stone played ‘THE CONJURING’. It blew my mind. I didn’t understand what I was hearing but I loved it. Stone let me borrow the Peace Sells album. I’m 54 years old now. Megadeth has been with me through my enlistment in the Marine Corps, my combat tour in Iraq with the Army, my 26 years as a police officer, and two marriages. I fucking love Megadeth.
never realized how much of a turning point peace sells was for the band. i really thought it was rust in peace that did it for them to be completely honest. cool video!
peace sells dropped the day before my 16th birthday…. as a fan that was there when it all happened, yip this was the album when everything changed. funnily enough, when rust came out no one really kinda knew at the time that it would become their most revered album. they were certainly firing on all cylinders with rust, but sells was the game changer.
Thank you! Oh yeah - and it was the title track really that just so put them on the map. I was there when it came out, and we were all like - now this is metal with attitude.
2 music videos and mtv using your bass line as a opening for headbangers ball...mustaine said that after peace sells the band was treated like rockstar royalty. Sells really hit the nail in '86, after that their every record went platinum.
The timing change in Wake Up Dead is legendary. Marty may be the guitarist most know and love but Poland and Mustaine made some magic together and Poland was there because of Gar (RIP). And f**k you, heroin. Great video, mate!
Yup. I'm no musician, but listening to that album enough times, I began to hear how in the background, Gar was doing all sorts of variations during the periods where the guitars were pretty straightforward.
This album changed my life. About 25 years ago I was kid listening to various rock and metal bands, I was learning guitar too. I got this on casette in a charity shop and it blew me away and could not stop litening to it. It was at this moment I decided thrash is the genre for me! I listened to this every night for a year or 2. The musicianship was/is mesmorising!
Gar's drumming was off the charts. The master of the ride cymbal. This album is witchcraft, murder, betrayal...everything that makes life worth living.
Megadeth always had great members throughout its numerous lineups with the Marty/Nick lineup being called by the fans as the "classic" but the Chris/Gar lineup with the Daves is always my favorite and wished they continued longer.

Gun's N Roses and Metallica are what got me into metal music. When I saw "Wake Up Dead" video on MTV I was blown away and still love it just as much as the first time I heard it.
Yep... this album was a kick in the head directed at Metallica.... they sure sacked the wrong guy alright. Look how wicked he shot back after being basically dropped.. by his supposedly brothers. Truly my favorite metal album of all .
My parents were real christians & Megadeth was completely out of the question to listen to, so I stole this cassette from Kmart & listen to it under my pillow when everyone went to sleep every night!!
I saw them open for Motorhead at the Santa Monica Civic Center in 1985. I can remember me and my friends watching them not knowing what we were really listening to, it was so new. It was my first introduction to speed metal......my mind was blown.
Peace Sells is my favorite Megadeth album. I love the dark and menacing tone. I definitely prefer the original mix and do not like the remastered version. Some of Mustaine’s nastiest guitar solos can be heard on this album. The only thing that annoys me is the goddam cover. I skip it every time! Other than that.. solid 🤘🏼Finally saw Megadeth live August of 2024 and they played The Conjuring!
Megadeth was still very much an underground band going into Peace Sells. If I remember correctly the album was already done when Capitol bought their contract from Combat and remixed it. A few of the original Randy Burns mixes are on the 2004 reissue and RUclips. His version sounds more sparse and raw than the final product and it definitely has the feel of a grimy underground thrash record. Capitol's version is much more polished and definitely shows what they saw in Megadeth, that they could be a huge hit-making metal band.

I still remember the day I bought this cassette tape with my best friend (he also bought it rather than copy it since this album is that good). Between this and Metallica, I was hooked on this type of metal. Slayer followed soon after.
Back in 1984 I had just graduated high school at 17 in Sacramento, CA. Most of my friends and myself played guitar or drums. Some had gone down to Los Angeles to play in bands or find one. The next year my buddy brought back a few demos or copies of metal tapes. One was Killing is My Business. We had all heard about Megadeth from a pirate radio station called KYDS......which operated at El Camino high school in Sac. The album's production was crap or course, but it absolutely set the bar of what we wanted to hear. The El Dorado Saloon in Carmichael had all the Bay Area metal bands come through and in 1986 Megadeth opened for Kind Diamond. I still have the ticket stub. On that night they were on point and played an awesome set. Pretty sure I saw them again that year there.

Its not a "bad" album by anymeans, but when you look at KimB, Peace sells, and Rust in Peace, it felt like there is a story behind it. The other 3 are some of the most insane thrash albums ever made.
Thank you so much. I definitely plan on digging more into these. Sorry about the link - I got dinged for it so I will just give you the answer right here.... Kerry King's signature guitar 🤣

That will always be a debate in my mind, but yeah, that’s the one. The angst, politics, inner turmoil, and the right time / place. Perfect.
Peace Sells was awesome but Rust in Peace is the crown jewel for Megadeth if you ask me. I am just lucky to have been a kid in the 80s catching the first wave of thrash!!! What a time to grow up in, ripped jeans, long hair and patch vests just skate boarding around being a nuisance to society lol!

My 1st Megadeth record as a young kid in the 80's who only picked it due to the cool cover, man I wasn't prepared for the masterpiece I was about to hear. Thus putting me into that rabbit hole. Wasn't really a fan of So Far So Good So What? at first listen other then Darkest Hour and 502 but became more of a fan of it later on. Once Rust in Peace came out I was totally floored. Megadeth opened the door for bands like Metallica, Anthrax, Slayer, Testament, Exodus, Overkill, Death Angel, Motorhead, Iron Maiden and Danzing. Once I saw these bands live I became more of a fan and even bigger fan of Slayer 🤟🏼♥️
Aww, terrific video so far! … … so what! Haha jk Like I said, terrific, but I wished u included some brief samples to your stories… copyright issues?? I’m a “big” megadeth fan, but I have not heard bad omen, conjuring; or alas; my next searches on YT. Devil’s island is such heavy, catchy song. I’m gonna listen harder to those lyrics: sounds pretty brutal.. Megadeth>>metallica
Thank you so much! Yes, for a music RUclipsr of any sort - copyright is always the bane of our existence lol. Plus I find sometimes it interrupts the flow, I hope that people can sort of play this as they're doing things and if they want to see clips they're there, but otherwise they could just kick back and enjoy the story without a bunch of abrupt audio changes. So it's kind of a double-edged sword if you will. Thanks for the kind words I'm glad you like it!
@@guitarmeetsscience Lars thinks if he makes really intense metal drummer faces while playing the most basic stale beats ever will make people think he's really rocking out
They would have been bigger than Metallica if Dave got a real singer, but his ego wouldn't allow that. Yes they had success, but only a small fraction of what could have been.
Im a huge Megadeth fan but to me there's only two good songs on the Peace Sells album. The title track and Wake Up Dead which is one of the best metal songs ever written.
Two good songs?? Are you kidding me! You haven't really listened to the album properly if you think that! How could you have missed Good Mourning Black Friday, The Conjuring and Devil's Island?? Three of the best songs they ever did. In fact I'll stick my neck out and say they never topped Black Friday. Jazz meets classical meets the blues. That song defines what Megadeth are!
@@rushshukla4636 I dont like jazz or classical and blues is hit or miss to me. I was being nice in my first comment, I think those songs you mentioned are not just filler but objectively bad. Thank goodness they never played any of them in the 3 times Ive seen them live.
Would be cool if you did an episode like this on So Far So Good So What. I see you have an episode on Rust in Peace but not that one. That album is overlooked and doesn’t get enough attention imo.
Thank you - I have their whole catalog in the works, I just like to mix things up a little bit. It's definitely on the bucket list. So far I've gotten three Megadeth albums in - killing is my business, peace sells, and rust in peace. They all have interesting stories behind them for sure!

Lonnie's mix is 2 times better then Randy's. I have the expanded CD and it's not even a debate.
Aww, terrific video so far! … … so what! Haha jk
Like I said, terrific, but I wished u included some brief samples to your stories… copyright issues??
Amazing ❤❤❤❤
Those were the days.
Thank you!!! 🤘😎🤘
great album and it would be their last great album
Lars Ulrich was actually got the c.d he was secretly listening to it away from his own band
And crying
@@hammondOT into his hello Kitty pillow
@@frankmartell2063 I could see that - and making really crazy faces with his tongue sticking out with the headphones blaring on his head
@@guitarmeetsscience Lars thinks if he makes really intense metal drummer faces while playing the most basic stale beats ever will make people think he's really rocking out
Hahaha has to stick the tongue out in a zany fashion - works every time lol
WHERES THE LINK ARRRGHHHHHHH 😆
Lol.... Apparently RUclips frowns on the links so, here's the answer: Kerry King's signature guitar🤣

"Peace. ... ... Sells."
They would have been bigger than Metallica if Dave got a real singer, but his ego wouldn't allow that. Yes they had success, but only a small fraction of what could have been.
50 million albums…
@@outis439-A And Metallica have sold nearly 140 million....
This sounds like such a depressing environment to be around I would’ve quit the band lol
At least the album was finished
They made it.... But yeah definitely wasn't easy for sure
@@rushshukla4636My Last Words is also great
@@sole__doubtu arent a real metal fan, that’s all
@@outis439-A If being a "real metal" fan means agreeing with you, I can live with not being one 100%.
Old Megadeth is really good/ New Megadeth is really BAD
Still my favorite Megadeth album. Sorry, Rust in Peace..
