"We have such sights to show you!" Fun Fact: Film debut of Ashley Laurence. Lost In Adaptation Fact: Clive Barker adapted his own novel The Hellbound Heart (1986) to film, and in doing so, made many changes from his own source material. Make-Up Effect Fact: The Chatterer (Nicholas Vince) and Butterball (Simon Bamford) Cenobites had dialogue in the original script. However, when their make-up made coherent speech impossible, their lines were given to the Female (Grace Kirby) Cenobite and Pinhead (Doug Bradley), which helped to cement his reputation as the film's trademark character. Cenobite Legend Fact: During a post-production party when filming had ended, Doug Bradley was dismayed to be ignored by the other members of the crew. He thought that he had gotten on rather well with the cast and crew, and it wasn't until later that he realized that none of the crew had actually seen him without his makeup when playing Pinhead and therefore did not recognize him. Location Location Fact: In his DVD commentary, Clive Barker explained that filming the movie in an actual house forced him to be creative in his cinematography. There was often only room for a single camera and this explains why many of the shots are from only one angle. In particular, vertical movement was often the only movement available to the camera operators, which explains many of the overhead and zoom shots. Only one room in the house, the attic, was shot on a soundstage, but only the FX shots used this attic set.
In the novella, it’s not really about the house so much as what happens there. When Frank gets taken by the Cenobites in the beginning of the novella, he’s given a sensory overload and he-uhm-relieves himself sexually onto the floor. When Larry accidentally cuts himself moving into the house, his blood falls onto the place where Frank’s…fluids dried, and that gives Frank the opportunity to come back by way of a link to his physical presence on earth. Also, one thing they changed from the book to the movie that I really wish they hadn’t: in the book, Kirsty is Larry (his name is Rory in the book)’s friend and unrequited love interest, not his daughter.
Cenobites are extra-dimensional beings who appear in the novella The Hellbound Heart, the sequels The Scarlet Gospels and Hellraiser: The Toll, and the eleven Hellraiser films. They are from a religious sect in Hell known as the Order of the Gash, describing themselves as "explorers in the further regions of experience", and granting sadomasochistic pleasures to those who call upon them. Author David McWilliam notes that the Cenobites are described in more explicitly sexual terms in the book compared with their depictions in the film adaptations. Clive Barker drew inspiration for the Cenobite designs from punk fashion, Catholicism, and by the visits he took to BDSM clubs in New York City and Amsterdam. Each of the four primary Cenobites from The Hellbound Heart were featured in the film, with appearances based upon their descriptions in the book. The first Cenobite became Butterball, the second Pinhead, the third Chatterer, and the fourth The Female. The Engineer was drastically altered for the film, taking the form of a giant creature with characteristics of different predatory animals. The original trilogy is fantastic; albeit one that it’s definitely starting to show its age despite the practical effects still being stunning. But I really do feel that the planned prequel; Hellraiser: Origins would’ve been incredible had it gone fully into production. The trailer, the concept art & make up tests looked absolutely incredible….the trailer should still be online somewhere.
if some of the voices sound weird it's because the british actors were dubbed with american voices. frank's VO actor sounds like he belongs in an anime
ALWAYS thought he was meant to say " *WHO* the hell is that?" and they left in a blooper. Also, when he says " *ONLY* when I drink", I thought it would be the opposite...
The cenobites are Pinhead, Chatterrer, Butterbal w sunglasses., and Open/deep throat. The lament configuration raises hell. I really can't remember my reaction the first time I saw it as it's been a long time. One of my favorite franchise for horror. Classic.
Clive Barker is legendary as an author. This was a return to Gothic horror in the midst of the slasher boom. The monsters in this are Frank and Julia, while the Cenobites are simply a force of nature. They are what they are. Demons to some, angels to others. You call them, and they take you. Despite their short screen time, however, they leave such an impression, it's not hard to see why so many latched onto them as the face of the franchise. Unfortunately, this franchise can be very uneven. 1, 2, and 4 are the most essential movies in the franchise. 3 is far more slasher-movie fare and, honestly, not really crucial, plot-wise. You can stop at 2, but despite its problems, 4 is still a good entry in the series and gives a lot more context. Just a shame that the studio meddled so much in its production. The rest of the movies are either one-off stories of varying quality that didn't start as Hellraiser movies, or reboots/remakes that don't really do the original justice. Of those, Inferno and Hellseeker are the best of them, with the latter featuring the return of a certain character. I strongly advise against Hellworld and Revelations, unless you want to see how dire sequels can get. Overall, this movie series is worth exploring, but I recommend taking a guide. We have such sights to show you.
Part 2 picks right up after part 1, just as good. 3 and 4 are fun Pinhead movies imo. That's it. The rest are just different movies with cameos from Pinhead mostly imo.
I believe stranger things character vecna and his voice was inspired by pinhead. How he hangs in the attic is similar. Hellraiser what a classic I own all of them.

You should definetely watch Hellbound Hellraiser II - we get some interesting answers for the lore, the effects are even better and it's such a cool and creepy sequel, with genuine horror and fascinating fantasy. PLEASE never ever waist your time watching from 5 on, it's just incredibly boring and stupid cash grab sequels. 3 and 4 if you want a complete Hellraiser lore and well-round story with a decent end. The remake is a very good movie too and I definetly recommend. This first movie and II scared the hell out of me when I was a kid, and that was just by looking at the VHS covers. I will never forget when we finally got the guts to watch them, and it stick with me to this day.
I word for word typed "hellraiser reaction" in my search bar only to find this was uploaded 6 days ago?!! Talk about timing, I love reactionary channels especially for horror and music. All the comments on this video are gold and very insightful to the Hellraiser franchise and I feel like I literally arrived just in time for the party. Awesome!
"Hellraiser" was the penultimate franchise of the indie horror cycle of the late '60's-'80's beginning with George Romero's "Night of the Living Dead" in 1968 and ending with Stan Winston's "Pumpkinhead" in 1988. It is the most unique and layered member of this group. Clive Barker was ascribed the mantle of successor to Stephen King when the maestro famously said in a blurb, "I have seen the future of horror and his name is Clive Barker." A number of his books and short stories have been adapted to film including "Lord of Illusions", "Midnight Meat Train" and "Books of Blood". "Hellraiser" is based on a novella entitled "The Hellbound Heart". Producers asked for a name change for the film version because the original title sounded too romantic. At a loss, Barker put it to the production staff to come up with an alternative and a middle-aged woman on the film crew came up with a winner: "What a Woman Will Do for a Good F**k!" Lol. I thought the cast of mostly unknowns was excellent! Andrew Robinson as the cuckolded Larry was the best known and would later play the choice role of the tailor-cum-spymaster Garak on "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine". Uncle Frank was played lustily by Sean Chapman in flashback and menacingly by Oliver Smith in the skinless present. Clare Higgins' descent into absolute depravity is thrilling to watch as she wrestles with any moral qualms less and less. Finally, Ashley Laurence is tremendously underrated among Scream Queens as her virtuous ingenue Kirsty willingly consigns Uncle Frank's soul to eternal torment when the Cenobites come calling for her. Doug Bradley's role as Pinhead is small but his character design leaves an indelible impression becoming the emblem for the franchise. When he says, "We'll tear your soul apart!", it gives me chills. In a later entry, he has a great line: "Your suffering will be legendary even in Hell!" The film is about gradations of evil running the gamut from selfish self-preservation to evil personified. There is Kirsty's desperate exchange of Frank for herself, Clare's willing murders born of twisted lust, Frank's monstrous predations and fratricide, the Cenobites' revelry in exploring the further regions of experience and ol' Beelzebub himself monitoring the whole affair as a homeless vagrant only to reveal himself at the very end. The practical effects are extraordinary ranking with Rob Bottin's work on "The Thing" and Rick Baker's work on "An American Werewolf in London". Watching Frank reconstitute from protoplasm and brainstem is an Oscar-worthy set piece. The first three sequels are okay but they take a nose-dive after that. The fourth film, "Bloodline", is the most interesting because it shows the origin of the puzzle box in the 18th-century, tells a story in the present and continues with a descendant of the puzzle maker in the 22nd-century! Hulu recently released a reboot with a female Pinhead!
The Box, otherwise known as the Lament Configuration was commissioned during the early 14-16th Century, as a gift the a Magician... By Philip LaMerchant a local clock and toy maker... The Lament Configuration is one of over 250 different puzzle boxes hidden around the world.... And they all are designed to exactly what you saw..... The Box feeds off of your desires and hungers.... Your need to go beyond yourself.... Each position of the box has a name... And each shape opens different doors into Hell, with LEVIATHAN being the FINAL SEQUENCE to unlock...
Not sure if someone already said this, but no Pinhead isn't his real name, it's The Hell Priest or just Priest. Pinhead was given to him by both fans and the main character (as an insult) of the 3rd movie. However, Clive Barker hates that name, and to him it's always been the Hell Priest or Priest. Which, in the remake with a female "Pinhead" they call it by its original name.
just another 80s dark fantasy i watched when i was a child. the neverending story, labyrinth, hellraiser. normal kid stuff. i was allowed to watch anything and i paid for it in unspeakable nightmares. oh, there's a photo floating around on the internet of doug bradley in pinhead makeup, holding a baby. whenever i see it i think: "your blubbering will be legendary"
Shortest verse in the bible is "Jesus wept". Which was after being told his friend Lazerus was dead. Love the Hell Raiser movies. This and the 2nd are my favorites.
Excellent choice guys! One of the best 80’s horror flicks for sure. I saw this little orgy of the macabre at the movies when I was 11 years old. I remember I fell in love with Kirsty.😍This has everything you could ever want in a horror film: S*@, Torture, Demons, Blood Thirsty Creatures. What more could you want?! Sadly they don’t make ‘em like this anymore.😢 Killer reaction guys. Have a happy Halloween.“ Your suffering will be legendary, even in hell.” This line is a sneak peek from part 2. 😈
I won't even touch a rubrics cube because of this movie lmao but seriously i wont this movie is so good but it terrified me as a child when i watched it for the first time in 1998 thanks guys love your reactions
Not Pinhead, The Priest, and yes Cenobites. The series is mainly straight to video, the 2nd and 3rd were in theater. But the original is true Clive Barker, the remake is also is excellent and on hulu
When I first saw this movie, after it hit the video tape rental places in 1980-whatever, is that the story was stupid and confusing but the Cenobites and effects and music were great. I wouldn't ever watch it again but it's nice to see reactions/get other peoples' thoughts on it. Thanks!
Originally titled sadomasochists from another dimension ( changed to the much more snappy hellraiser ) came from the novella ' hellbound heart ' in the book pinhead had no name and was described as androgynous creature that took offerings of dove heads and came with the sent of vanilla ( the creatures design was based on some of the people he witnessed at new York S&M clubs,he at the time regular frequented )the engineer ( the down and out guy )had a head comprised of pure light and was the architect of the cenobites, Frank's resurrection was by semen not blood. These things were changed due to commercial and budgetary restraints and studio interference. Barker was tired of his work being translated to the screen poorly,so this movie was entrusted to this first time director because he guaranteed to make it for one million dollars made in north London on a very low budget and some of the effects were done out of his own pocket by Barker himself on weekends when the crew were at home because of the lack of money they had to heavily compromise the ending. the movie was redubbed for the American market
I imagine you've already been counseled by others, but as interesting and unique as the concept is, I would say that it's only the first and second (Hellraiser 2: Hellbound) films, as well as the Hulu reboot from like 2021, that are worth watching. There's something like nine other titles--many straight to video--that are out there and they are mostly all atrocious. Clive Barker as an author, if you're readers, is definitely worth checking out. This is based on his novella The Hellbound Heart. Other books of his that are very good IMO include The Damnation Game, The Great and Secret Show, Everville, Imajica, and Cabal (adapted into the film Nightbreed starring director David Cronenberg).
Most of them were not even Hellraiser films but re-worked scripts to turn them into Hellraiser films. It is never going to work out well. I do like Bloodline as it is good closure to the series until the reboot.
If you continue on you'll find out where the box comes from. This was how horror was done. There's a magazine called Fangoria that been published since 1979. It always had behind the scenes creature shops and how these movies were made. It's wild it's still published 43 years later.
You'll get the full story of everything with Hellraiser I,II and III, check them out. Unfortunately the series got cheesier and off track after the first three films IMHO. You can also get a better idea of the lore and back story if you read the novella The Hell Bound Heart, which this film series was based on. Great choice guys, Hellraiser is one my favorite horror film series. Hope you enjoy them as well. Warmest Regards JPD
What I like is how most reaction channels have now gone through the "big name" Halloween spooky movies (Friday the 13th, Halloween, Nightmare On Elm Street, Scream, Texas Chainsaw Massacre) and have to start looking at the funny weird classics like Hellraiser, Reanimator, and hopefully Phantasmagoria, Puppet Master, and Subspecies
The mysterious hobo is called an Eremite. They are demonic guardian to the puzzle box. They 'distribute' the boxes to the unsuspecting mortal souls all over the world. Hellraiser 2 is okay, but the rest is no no. The new one however, is dope 👌
Love the intro so 80' , Hellraiser 1 was awesome but the real Lore gonna arrived with HL 2 (take the uncensored version) then 3, 4 and the reboot in 2022. The other except the last one than i think was good because it called about hell and heaver, are not good and used just the box and Pinhead for say "It's a Hellraiser movie" lool
To have so little screen time Pinhead has become one of the most iconic characters in horror movie history. He's also misunderstood. I don't consider him a villain. He only comes when he's summoned and he's just doing his job. Like he says - he's an angel to some, a demon to others. You should watch the sequel and then stop after that. It gives you insight to Pinhead and the other Cenobites.
Against the odds, Clive Barker produced a unique, imaginative, if not somewhat stomach-churning, work that has since earned a place in the annals of horror cinema.
So unpopular opinion, i think this movie is bad, but pinhead and the cenobites are so amazing their 10 minutes carry all the other bs on their shoulders.
I actually watched all of the Hellraiser movies... Pinhead was in military when he got the box, The lady with the open throat was once an opera singer before she got the box too, The Teeth Chattering monster was once a child that is addicted to sweets and chocolates before the box took him last was the big guy with shades he is an obsessive food eater before he was taken by the box.... Hope this little background helps... luv your reaction to this movie ❤
I know you seem to find this film funny, but way back when this first hit the screens it revolutionised how sex and violence in was depicted in Horror. Also the look of the Cenobites were something most of us had never seen before.
If you have read Clive's books it gives a greater understanding of what's going on and there is a lot of symbolism, a lot! That most people miss. Not just the story that this is based on, "the hell bound heart", but all I'd other books and stories. His take on how other worldly things affect reality is great. I recommend highly reading his books and stories, but who reads these days. The rest of the movies are not written or directed by Clive. Hollywood builds it's owe lore for the bad guys.
For me, this is an unscary mess let down by the acting as well as the script. Pinhead has to be one of the least scary “horror” characters of all time, whose threats are laughable. On the plus side, the character makeup/designs are mostly well done.

I can't remember - is 2 the backstory of Pinhead?
"We have such sights to show you!"
Fun Fact: Film debut of Ashley Laurence.
Lost In Adaptation Fact: Clive Barker adapted his own novel The Hellbound Heart (1986) to film, and in doing so, made many changes from his own source material.

Clive knocked it out of the park with this one. The score is so epic too, I don't know if a first time viewer notices how awesome the music is.
i have the score, and the sequels on my playlist!

The new Hellraiser seemed disconnected...but full of lore. Great!
Literally my favorite and scariest movie I've ever watched.
Good stuff! It's been a while since I've watched Hellraiser. Man, Hellraiser rules.
Many thanks to Robert & Vanessa! 📍 #LateToTheParty #CliveBarker #Hellraiser #Hellraiser1987
Great! It is very interesting to see your joint reaction to the film Robocop 1987. This is a cool movie 👍🔥🦾
The mysterious hobo is called an Eremite. They are demonic guardian to the puzzle box. They 'distribute' the boxes to the unsuspecting mortal souls all over the world. Hellraiser 2 is okay, but the rest is no no. The new one however, is dope 👌
Great Reaction Guy's
Part 1, 2, and the 2022 reboot are the best Hellraisers!!! The others are mid. Nice reaction 👍
“No tears, please. It’s a waste of good SUFFERING!!!”
Quit commenting a million comments 🤡
@@maul_360 all two of them?
You have to watch part two to find out everything you asked. Hope you watch it soon.
Think the house was just connected to Frank because it's where he did the ritual, Like it was his personal gateway.
We'll Tear your soul apart.....
Part 2 is excellent, one of the best sequels ever. You should react to it. But forget about the rest, the rest are rubbish.
the films is based on a book by Clive barker its pretty much the same as the film except Kirsty is a friend and not the daughter!
The practical effects alone are worth the watch . Cenobites are horrifying
Y’all should watch sleepy Hollow
We've seen it. Love it.
Robert
Many years ago, I created my version of leader, Pinhead for Halloween.
Was Pinhead always visible in the first act? I don't remember that.
Have y’all ever done Phantasm?
We've seen the first Phantasm. Long ago.
Against the odds, Clive Barker produced a unique, imaginative, if not somewhat stomach-churning, work that has since earned a place in the annals of horror cinema.
You need to watch Phantasm another great80"s horror movie and also pumpkin head both great classics
We seen the first Phantasm. Pumpkinhead is on the list.
My Favorite Horror Author, Besides Stephen King!😱🤯😜🫣🥰💗🖥
More Hellraiser please. :D
the sequel, hellbound is my favorite horror movie of all time, after that hellraiser movies are just kinda so so
So unpopular opinion, i think this movie is bad, but pinhead and the cenobites are so amazing their 10 minutes carry all the other bs on their shoulders.
"WE'LL TEAR YOUR SOUL APART!"
I was 8 when I first watched this on a late night movie channel. In hindsight... that might have been... a bit too young for this.....
Friday the 13th is a year round watch. C'mon people.😂😂😂
Took me a few times to get this flick
You look better with out make up...really pretty 😊
Great movie.I was lucky enough to see it first run,and it was an experience, especially since I brought my Christian girlfriend with me.
Can I make a request for a movie to feature?- Kristine
I actually watched all of the Hellraiser movies... Pinhead was in military when he got the box, The lady with the open throat was once an opera singer before she got the box too, The Teeth Chattering monster was once a child that is addicted to sweets and chocolates before the box took him last was the big guy with shades he is an obsessive food eater before he was taken by the box.... Hope this little background helps... luv your reaction to this movie ❤
spoilers for some future reveals!
Spoilers doh
Can you also start watching Chucky?
👍👍👍👍👍👍
To all the Star Trek: Deep Space Nine fans the father in this movie is Garek
Ah yes just a simple tailor.
Also he was the Scorpio killer in the first Clint Eastwood 'Dirty Harry' movie.
@@LoveThisRealWoman A tinker, a tailor, a soldier, and a spy.
Why do you start watching Riverdale on your channel?
Dude on the right dying? He looks I’ll compared to last videos.
"He kissed her CHIN!!" EVERY FUCKING UPLOADER! 🤣🤣
She didn't WANT to be kissed at first...until she did...
I know you seem to find this film funny, but way back when this first hit the screens it revolutionised how sex and violence in was depicted in Horror. Also the look of the Cenobites were something most of us had never seen before.
Lord Of Illusions is not a Hellraiser film...who told you that?
If you have read Clive's books it gives a greater understanding of what's going on and there is a lot of symbolism, a lot! That most people miss. Not just the story that this is based on, "the hell bound heart", but all I'd other books and stories. His take on how other worldly things affect reality is great. I recommend highly reading his books and stories, but who reads these days. The rest of the movies are not written or directed by Clive. Hollywood builds it's owe lore for the bad guys.
Why do you have a whole reaction of some laughs? The movie is really scary, and it's like you're watching a comedy!!!! Is this your reaction to fear?
😂
For me, this is an unscary mess let down by the acting as well as the script. Pinhead has to be one of the least scary “horror” characters of all time, whose threats are laughable. On the plus side, the character makeup/designs are mostly well done.
Pinhead isn't supposed to be scary. He's supposed to be badass, which he is.
You'd better do reactions to comedies with Leslie Nielson, Bette Midler or Danny DeVito! You're nothing! Don't spoil the classics with your reaction!
Denis de Vito? 🤣🤣🤦♂🤦♂
@@tomseville2345 Sorry, of course Danny DeVito. I apologize.
This is one of those movies you can’t watch leisurely. Like requiem for a dream. So fd up.
why you think talking over an entire movie is somehow entertaining is a mystery - please stop talking - you add nothing of value
Our value on this platform is more than you could ever achieve.
Love how you have to censor the "nastiest" parts, when Frank is completely skinless for most of this, and uncensored...🤣🤣🧠🫀🫁💀💀
