It's funny, that, when this song first came out, everyone thought it was new Zeppelin. Everybody looked for it in the stores, or called the radio station. No one realized it was a new band out of Canada. Little did anyone know what heights they would climb to. They only turned out to be the best three-man band ever! And better than most bands with 4-8 people. And to me, they never sounded anything like Zep. Or anyone else for that matter. Rock wouldn't have been the same without Rush
I'm glad I'm not the only one who thanks that because I don't hear the Zep in their songs. You must have a good ear like me and can hear the difference.
Their 1st album, Rush, has so many different styles its crazy. Of course at the time I didnt know that. But being 57 and having listened to decades worth of music now, I can hear everything from Yes, Black Sabbath, Skynyrd, LZ, Jethro Tull and many others in this album. Its evident they were still "Finding their Way" stylistically. But for a LZ sounding song, try "What You're Doing". That one riff is straight from Led Zeppelin no doubt... ruclips.net/video/EBvJRI_Ftm0/видео.html
The song that opened the door for them. A Cleveland DJ used this song for her bathroom breaks due to the length of the song. To this very day they are still tight with this DJ, because that's just who these guys are. Take care ✌
Rick Haddad, I was born and raised in Canton Oh. It’s 60 mi. South of Cleveland. We used to get WMMS and would listen to this while she was on her bathroom break.
@Tim Dunn: I've already had the opportunity to use it at work and my co-workers cracked up, however, I didn't use it to describe a pleasant experience such as listening to Rush but rather an unfortunate incident involving an irritated customer whom I suspected was bat-shit crazy. Lol
The early Rush is what I grew up with (I'm 57). I'd suggest listening to "Anthem", "Fly by Night" and "Bastille Day". Peace out from New Brunswick, Canada

John Rutsey on the drums. He left the band after the first album and Alex and Geddy found Neil after that. The rest is the history of Rush with the professor.
This song is not only the greatest Rush song, but one of the greatest songs of all time. It just kicks ass, and is one of my favorite songs to jam to when im driving with the windows down. Just an amazing jam tune....
All of the lyrics on the 1st album were supposed to be written by the original drummer but, as Geddy Lee recalled, they had not been done by the day before they were set to record. Therefore, Geddy stayed up all night and wrote all the lyrics himself in 8 hours. IMO, that's why the lyrics are so straight forward on this album. Before the next album, they picked up Neil Peart as the new drummer and, impressed with how many books he read and the words he used, they were happy to let him take over the lyrics. If you haven't watched it yet, check out Beyond the Lighted Stage, the Rush documentary.
I love this song so much. Im a working man. this song represents me and all my fellow man that work hard for a living. the guitar of Alex lifeson sings to me.
a little late to the party here, found this from watching your Ren reactions 3 years into the future, lol - to find out you do have indeed a great taste in music! Love this song, going to watch your YYZ next!
Was in High School when this came out, wore the record out. This hooked me on Rush, I saw them 8 times live in my life and each time was better than the last. First time I heard this song live they lifted the roof off the arena. Then they added Neil to drums and they just kept evolving, love seeing you getting hooked on Rush too, join the club!
I love Rush. First time I saw them was in 79. We were so close. I was SOOOOOO young. Fell in love with ROCK and ROLL This is a jamming song. All of their songs were.
But we got teenage SoundCloud rappers who are geniuses now! That is a impressive piece of work for a band that young and it holds up overtime. (pun intended)
@@markstill8258 It takes a lot more work to be a n accomplished musician that it does a rapper. Not saying a rapper isn't talented but to master a musical instrument is 10,000 hours.
When you love what you do, it is almost certain that you will excel at it. Geddy Lee certainly enjoyed performing his music. I watched a concert of Rush in which he and his main drummer had a drummer jam session right there on the stage. Geddy played mostly hand beaten drums, and the main drummer matched what Geddy did with his stick beaten drum set. There were a lot of drums on that stage! Rush is a phenomenon of awesome power.
John Rutsey was a great drummer and founding member of Rush who released himself from Rush for health issues after their Debut album paving the way for Neil Peart which was extremely admirable RIP to Both
I like how you ''don't waste no more time'' and get right into the song. To describe RUSH in one word I would have to say intense. Nobody even comes close. Everything about these three guys just meshed perfectly. They were born for a reason and that was to make awesome freaking music. Such poignant lyrics. RIP Mr. Peart. Rest in peace. You are missed so much.
You and everyone that replied are nuts. There is nothing Sabbath sounding about this song. It's purely RUSH 100%. At least to me. Maybe I'm mishearing something. All I hear is RUSH.
I agree as well but the original version is so raw and just so early Rush so I'm kind of glad you did this one because it is the original Jam and Alex is just on fire in this song as he is on time machine.
@@Snowdogkh I saw it in Houston, TX. One of their best concerts. Jamal, if they EVER come around again, you have to see them live!! You'll love them even more!!
Pretty straightforward composition and Its right in John rutsey's wheelhouse. Fantastic drumming. What it shows to me is how masterful they are of their instruments at 20 years old. Amazing.
They recorded this album in a few days IIRC. Also, IIRC, Geddy wrote all of the lyrics in a day. Rutsey was supposed to do the lyrics but didn't have any.
To my brother from another mother, you feel songs like I do. What a blessing you are in my life. A friend of mine handed me an eight track tape of RUSH's 1st album and said, "Try this out." I took it home and listened on head phones in 1974 and have been a RUSH fan ever since. I have seen many bands live since, but have never been physically beat up like I am after a RUSH concert. Thank you for the video!
I loved that you just went for the original version but at some point in your life watch Working Man - Live in Cleveland. And turn on that record button so we can all enjoy your reaction. You will love the way the song has evolved. Thanks for all the Rush reactions!
This was the hit of their debut album, the only album they wrote (entirely) before they replaced their original drummer (left due to health reasons while touring mainly) and the new drummer brought all sorts of intellectual ideas in, which is evident from everything you’ve heard from them already!! ✌️🔥🤘🤘
Rush is king here in Toronto, this is there home town. this is there debut album, came out in 74, this album had John Howard Rutsey on drums, who was a fantastic drummer as well, no comparison to Neil of course but still good . He had to leave the band due to health reasons . Unfortunately John Rutsey died back in 2008.they were 21 and 22 years old at the time...
Geddy's lyrics tended to be straightforward descriptions of his own experiences. While Neil sometimes did the same, his lyrics often include fantastic imagery, historical and literary references, complex themes, metaphors, and allegory. Neil Peart didn't have to relearn how to drum-it was great the way he was doing it. But with all the family death that came his way, whatever kept his head straight is fine by me...
I digested Signals, but after that, album after album was a disappointment, and I can not tell you how big a thing that was for me. I am much more tolerant nowadays 😆.
This song has such sentimental value to me. My father introduced me to RUSH as a little girl when he used to drive me to school but I was too young to understand why he got teary-eyed. My parents gave up vacation days and worked weekends in order to give my brothers and I everything we could ever need in this life. I can't hear it without my heart going to all the work they put in for us.
I heard this for the first time on the radio in my car. The next day I was telling everyone Led Zeppelin had a new really cool song out at school. I had never heard of Rush at that point. They have become my favorite band of all time since.
That's the song that put Rush on the map and got their professional career going, back in 1974! They were able to sign an American contract with Mercury records because of the response of Cleveland fans -- classic working class, factory town -- to the song. The song reflects the general tone and production of the first album. It is a totally rocking album, very ambitious for them at that time. But, because of the success of Working Man and the signing of the American contract to release the album and go on a major North American tour, Rush had to get a new drummer. The drummer on this album was unable to make the tour happen. So, Rush had 2 weeks to audition a new drummer, choose a new drummer and get him/them ready for the tour! Neil Peart, come on down! The rest, as they say, is history!.
Their live version from the Time Machine Tour in 2011 is something to behold! This original is just comfort food for my ears, but as they age, they become fine wine! the Reggae blend into the hard rock is pure gold!
This drummer on this track preceded Neil's entry into the band but his drums on the live album ... AMAZING! I believe this drummer's name was John Rutsey.
I lived in Ohio in the 70's and saw Rush when they were a opening band and were recording their debut album. I saw them perform this song before it was recorded. I was in awe...hooked ever since.
Mannnnnn Alex was such a force so under rated guitarist. Man bowing down to them all. for sureone of the best bands of all times. Thanks Mike Good for hipping me to them in my youth. .
I remember my dad going into a 7-11 back in 1976, and he bought this tape, and this was the first song. I fell in love with Rush from this day, until now. And, the original drummer was John Rutsley, who I fell in love with at age 15!
Great trio from my hometown of Toronto, Alex went to the same high school as my aunt, my dad and I back in the 70’s I graduated 3 years ago and they did around the same time as him and Geddy went to the same high school I attended for summer school back in 2018, my aunt was also best friends with Geddy’s wife Nancy In college, my dad told me that she always pulled up to campus in a limo
Not a huge Rush fan but Working Man is one of the best hard rock songs ever written. They bring the smoke on this one.
Alex is criminally under-rated on the guitar.
Except by guitarists. 😁

You got there! Good man..and great shirt. Now onto that Sabbath requests
Lance Cornell I’ve been hitting him up for Sabbath as well... so much to get into..
Every time I here this song it's a beautiful New England Summer afternoon In 1978. Every Time, Nice!!
Here Again - Rush
One of my favorite early Rush songs 10/10 son 😎
This song has such sentimental value to me. My father introduced me to RUSH as a little girl when he used to drive me to school but I was too young to understand why he got teary-eyed. My parents gave up vacation days and worked weekends in order to give my brothers and I everything we could ever need in this life. I can't hear it without my heart going to all the work they put in for us.
Love your reactions! "Red Tide" or "Ghost of a Chance" next. Different era, same perfection 😎. Greetings from Argentina 🙌
Ghost of a Chance! Rush's perfect "love song"! :)
I heard this for the first time on the radio in my car. The next day I was telling everyone Led Zeppelin had a new really cool song out at school. I had never heard of Rush at that point. They have become my favorite band of all time since.
Time to do the other songs in the trilogy of fear series. Esp. The Enemy Within.
AHA, back to the beginning. Barely out of their teens they show off their talent!
Their live version from the Time Machine Tour in 2011 is something to behold! This original is just comfort food for my ears, but as they age, they become fine wine! the Reggae blend into the hard rock is pure gold!
Keep the Rush going ☺️☺️☺️☺️
Alex is top five of all time..! Dare I say maybe the best? My mind is made up and has been since 1980...RUSH forever...... !
Rush's 1st album has got a blues feel to it.
There's a bootleg album (some title it The Fifth Order of Angels) that has a really bluesy sound - - Fancy Dancer, Garden Road, ...
This drummer on this track preceded Neil's entry into the band but his drums on the live album ... AMAZING! I believe this drummer's name was John Rutsey.
Anthem!
I lived in Ohio in the 70's and saw Rush when they were a opening band and were recording their debut album. I saw them perform this song before it was recorded. I was in awe...hooked ever since.
It must be said again . They were 17!! When they did this . Alex/Geddy were shredding it in their
diapers!
1974, a year with a lot of songs that haven't aged well, but this one song makes up for all of that.
The Doobie Brothers - Cheat the Hangman (one of the best songs ever imo)
Agreed!
@Joe Maldonado yea but this one alone is similar to Led Zepplin Stairway to Heaven because of the switch up at the end
Thats what I love about Rush, one song is mystical and the next is just flat out hard rock!!
They do it ALL!!!!
Gotta do "Weird Al: You Don't Love Me Anymore"!!!! Funny stuff!!!
Al's original's are criminally underrated.
I'd love to see your reaction to "I Think I'm Going Bald".
They could do it all...way ahead of their time. This may very well be their best over rocking song...
I need some "Fly By Night"
Any time my life takes a turn, this is THE song that helps me through it. "It's time I was King now, not just one more pawn."
Can we get The Necromancer by Rush next
Who's a big D20 nerd? Yes you are.
Gotta do By-Tor first!
Amor odio Amor Yes!
One of my favorites, along with By-Tor and the Snow Dog
Ha. So long
I worked midnight shift for 6 years steady and listened to this song on my way to work all the time. Thank you Geddy, Alex and Neil!
@knightowl50 thanks for the correction 👍
The Rush stinkey- stank face ......
Enjoy (;- }
Peace
