totally agree with kris about rain code, very frustrating game to play, very repetitive and unwilling to challenge any concepts they present like truth vs justice, the necessity and morality of the mystery labyrinth. for a while I wished that Halara especially took the MC (Forgot his name because he really is the worst mc kodaka's made) to task over him using the mystery labyrinth at all, and praised him for solving the murder back in the real world, completely clueless of how he actually solved it. I couldn't really take any of the characters seriously because this game has made me hate catchphrases. Or characters derailing the flow of the story to show off their character wacky quirks in a distracting and meaningless way, looking at that yellow dude the most. I cant say i'm looking forward to hundred line because rain code seriously made me question if I actually like kodaka's work or I was just younger and dumber and didn't know much better.

Im glad im not the only one who felt like the SH2 remake overstays its welcome sometimes. Its a pretty good remake all things considered but good god. The hospital is literal hell. Also, Dan. Set the combat difficulty to easy. Youre not missing anything by doing so. The enemies are still plenty annoying. Easy in this game is basically the normal difficulty from the original.
Its kind of interesting listening to the gang (well, Kris and Dan in this instant) talk about how they think fans of og will perceive SH2R as inferiour while i been following those fans and with rare exceptions those fans been mostly fine with this? Like, the complaints for length is something that i *only* heard here, on this podcast. I wonder if its one of those cases where its Gigaboots doing a metaphorical "jumping over the maze" while everyone are still in and those complaints will rise up a few weeks later? Regardless, to me, a person who is currently playing OG SH2 (thank god for Enhanced edition, I will play 3 the same way) the *biggest* complaint that has weight is that they made James more puppy eyed. Fuck that.
A sad reality is that a large majority of SH2 fans have never actually played the game, just watched youtube essays on it. And so they have some grasp on the essentials of what the game is about, but have no personal experience with how it achieved anything. Take James for example: fans know that James is a messed up guy because they heard about that in a video, but there's little to no frame of reference for how SH2 portrayed that through things like vocal performance or cinematography. As a result, when they're given a puppy eyed James who sounds like smooth action guy, is just really nice, cares about the plight of all the other people around him, and does stuff like apologize to Maria they are unable to register all the issues with that. Because the nucleus of "James is a messed up guy" isn't completely shattered on a narrative level. It will ultimately take that moment when the honeymoon period is over and an essayist does a video about stuff like the excessive padding ruining a game's once immaculate pacing, worse cutscene direction, and screwed up characterization for them to see these problems.

If the majority of og fans love a remake, it’s probably a really good remake. Every remake is gonna have a small group of og fans that are not gonna be satisfied with it no matter how faithful it is. There’s absolutely going to be videos focusing on its flaws and maybe one will have “soulless” in the title. At the end of the day, it’s a really good game with a lot of love put into it.
I've only watched the Spectacular Spider-man animated series. It's still great, but it ends abruptly. I'm now intrigued to watch the 90's animated series going by what Dan has said about it.
The 90s Spider-Man series is good. It's probably the most "complete" Spider-Man series that's actually been made since it had a pretty long run and had a real finale unlike Spectacular. I still prefer Spectacular but the 90s series is worth a watch.
Of all the horror protagonists to take inspiration from Rainbow 6 Siege to deal with obstructions in a building, James Sutherland wouldn't have ever been high on my list.
CPU efficiency gains are a pretty big deal for data centers, and consumer lines are basically where they dump the chips that don't make the cut for enterprise models. That doesn't make the Intel/AMD clown shoes any less squeaky from a consumer perspective though.
Unrelated to this episode, but as Dan is a fan of Harvest Moon (Unless I'm misremembering), does anyone know if he's ever said his thoughts on/played Stardew Valley? If so, where? A vague point in the right direction will be fine as an answer. I'm curious as someone who's played Stardew but not Harvest moon, on how it compares.
I haven't played Stardew Valley. I find it aesthetically repelling so I won't give it a chance. Spiff has played and really likes both (and by both we mean Story of Seasons and old Harvest Moons, the new HM games are slop cause the publisher wrestled the rights to the name away.)

I know it's trendy to shit on remakes here, unless they somehow "justify" themselves... But as a millennial who just barely missed most of these games when they got released, I honestly can't picture myself going back to play the originals. The best example in my mind, is FFX and X-2 remaster. Yes, there are some problems. But I never got the chance to play the original, so I don't care. I do care that the remaster has multitudes of QOL features, without which the games can be a real chore to play! I'm so grateful to have remakes and remasters, because otherwise I simply wouldn't bother going back to many classic games. The modern sensibilities of QOL shouldn't be underestimated!!
I mean you should care that FFX looks completely butchered in every conceivable way and the only positive was some "QOL" that was barely necessary in the first place
The thing is that you don't actually play those classic games, you play different games that have some relation to the originals. Nothing wrong with that in particular, but playing through something like RE2 remake is in no way equivalent to playing the original RE2
I mean remakes are fine but they shouldn't be half of the industry's output and they should at least just be throwing roms of the original up with those remakes to preserve that, because the point of remakes are that they are different games then the original
To be fair though this is the exact reason why you should be critical about modern ports of older titles, it replaces the game culturally. Unless someone is really into retro stuff 99% of people will just play the newest release version; so changes should be scrutinized. Preserving history is important! You can make modern changes while still adhering to the original developer's intended experience, and sadly many such things like the FFX port you mentioned do a really bad job of it and its right for people to want better. Also specifically though horror is like its own game design genre; restrictive gameplay is a design thing not really a chore its part of the way it makes you feel while playing. sorta extra but I hope you can reconsider playing old games or even older media in general it gets So much more interesting when you consider that so many old products of their time literally Cannot be made anymore going forward because of how culture has changed and the value in that as a snapshot of history.
personally i was disappointed in RE3R just as a fan of RE2R, never played the originals. it's such a downgrade from that game in every way! finding about all the stuff they cut compared to the original was just the cherry on top

A vague point in the right direction will be fine as an answer. I'm curious as someone who's played Stardew but not Harvest moon, on how it compares.
I haven't played Stardew Valley. I find it aesthetically repelling so I won't give it a chance. Spiff has played and really likes both (and by both we mean Story of Seasons and old Harvest Moons, the new HM games are slop cause the publisher wrestled the rights to the name away.)

I know it's trendy to shit on remakes here, unless they somehow "justify" themselves...
But as a millennial who just barely missed most of these games when they got released, I honestly can't picture myself going back to play the originals.
The best example in my mind, is FFX and X-2 remaster.
Yes, there are some problems.
But I never got the chance to play the original, so I don't care.
I do care that the remaster has multitudes of QOL features, without which the games can be a real chore to play!
I'm so grateful to have remakes and remasters, because otherwise I simply wouldn't bother going back to many classic games.
The modern sensibilities of QOL shouldn't be underestimated!!

Those are bad ports, not remakes in the sense that Silent Hill 2 and other games are. Different thing.
The thing is that you don't actually play those classic games, you play different games that have some relation to the originals. Nothing wrong with that in particular, but playing through something like RE2 remake is in no way equivalent to playing the original RE2
I mean remakes are fine but they shouldn't be half of the industry's output and they should at least just be throwing roms of the original up with those remakes to preserve that, because the point of remakes are that they are different games then the original
To be fair though this is the exact reason why you should be critical about modern ports of older titles, it replaces the game culturally.
Unless someone is really into retro stuff 99% of people will just play the newest release version; so changes should be scrutinized.
Preserving history is important! You can make modern changes while still adhering to the original developer's intended experience, and sadly many such things like the FFX port you mentioned do a really bad job of it and its right for people to want better. Also specifically though horror is like its own game design genre; restrictive gameplay is a design thing not really a chore its part of the way it makes you feel while playing.
sorta extra but I hope you can reconsider playing old games or even older media in general it gets So much more interesting when you consider that so many old products of their time literally Cannot be made anymore going forward because of how culture has changed and the value in that as a snapshot of history.
personally i was disappointed in RE3R just as a fan of RE2R, never played the originals. it's such a downgrade from that game in every way! finding about all the stuff they cut compared to the original was just the cherry on top
