Mrs. Dalloway is one of my all time favorite novels. I have read it about three times so far - in college, grad school, and then just for leisure. It can be difficult to follow but its historical context and literary importance makes it so rewarding and wonderful to read.

Fellow southerner here. I read "The Sound and the Fury" a while back. I later read "As I Lay Dying." I'll have to re-read "The Sound and The Fury" (crazy book) before I can make heads or tails out of it. A second read of "As I Lay Dying" hit home with me, because my own mother had died by the time I re-read it. After that, there was nothing bewildering about it. As for "Lonesome Dove," I've been a lifelong reader, and could never choose a favorite book until I read LD. Finally, if anyone asks me what my favorite book is, I now have an answer. Lonesome Dove is not intimidating in the least. You should put it at the top of your pile. There was a miniseries made out of it, but I've never seen it, and never plan to see it, because the actor portraying Gus is not the Gus of my imagination. Gus is my everything. There are prequels and a sequel to Lonesome Dove, none of which I plan to read. I need LD to be a standalone. I also give a top rating to "The Count of Monte Cristo." It's a masterpiece.

Ohhhh wow. I'm excited for Lonesome Dove! It never really interested me much but so many people love it!

@@jacksontalley Lonesome Dove never interested me either prior to watching RUclips videos. Another book I was never interested in reading was "Gone With The Wind." I finally relented and read it, because it was continually on the "greatest books of all time" lists. Whew ... that book is something else. I dreamed about it and Scarlett O'Hara four days in a row. Talk about a character.

I read Anna Karenina a couple of years ago. It’s a pretty good book…but I remember there being a very large chunk of the book..that is literally just about farming….nothing even happens..it’s just about this guys farm..and how he’s working on it. Other than that section of the book..I highly recommend. It’s also not that difficult of a read. It’s a simple story and I think it took me less than a week to finish. :) I also read Jude the Obscure in January of this year…not my favorite book. I thought that it was incredibly boring and not as sad as everyone makes it out to be…except for one little part. I hope I didn’t discourage you! I hope you are able to make it to all of these books very soon!

I read Jude in July and 1000% agree! Not as sad as people make it out to be... I think he tried to be sad and I thought that one part 👀 was very melodramatic. But still excited for Anna Karenina. Thanks for watching!

Great list! I would prioritise Don Quixote 🇪🇸 and Mrs. Dalloway 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿
Talking about reading lists for high school, D.H. Lawrence's Sons and Lovers was on my syllabus in Scotland 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 in the 1970's!
I was traumatised by Jude the Obscure but equally enjoyed it, in particular the themes of class, education and religion.

You definitely should read Lonesome Dove. You do not have to be a fan of the western genre to enjoy this book. And also, do not be intimidated by its length. You will get lost in the characters and their story that the pages fly by. There is a 1989 miniseries based on the book starring robert duvall and tommy lee jones that was excellent as well. You should watch the miniseries after reading the book. Lonesome Dove is a 5 star read for sure ❤

A Room with a View is a perfect place to start and then I highly recommend Howard's End (EM's best imho).
