DIY Bike Saddle Bag - MYOG

  • In this episode of zipworks I make a very minimal DIY saddle / seat bag for cycling. I tried making it as discrete and small as possible while still being able to fit the bare minimum puncture repair kit; a spare tube, tyre levers and a CO2 canister. It's 4x3x2in with a #5 zipper from HHH and a 1/4 seam allowance. The main fabric is 1680d ballistic nylon, which I think works great for this application since it is quite thick and sturdy which means it holds it shape rather well. Also it's water resistant which is a good thing because it's likely to get sprayed at some point from the back wheel. Last but not least, I think it's damn good looking - although thick it's somehow sleek och elegant. Sews really easily. Final weight came out to 1.6oz / 49g. The mounting system is a simple 1" webbing strap that is held in place by a webbing ladder in the back, wraps around the rails under the saddle of the bike and then clips together in the front with a side-release buckle.
    Thanks for watching!

    ABOUT
    -
    This video is not a tutorial per se. This is how I enjoy documenting a few of my projects, it's not meant as a comprehensive sew-along guide. Some may find it useful to see how I like do things but my hope is primarily that some will find these videos inspiring - sparking creativity and ideas for making their very own bespoke gear. My thinking is that by showing the projects in a fast-paced and light-hearted manner conveys the message that making your own ultralight gear as a hobby is not very difficult and ultimately a very rewarding pursuit.
    That said, I realise that some people watching this may want to follow along and some of them will be beginners at sewing. I try my best to not leave any important steps out of the clips but for anyone finding it hard to follow even with a rewatch, leave a comment below and I or someone else in the community may be able to assist.

Often, I simply forget where I got something in the first place - over the years I have collected tons of MYOG supplies from lots of places. In those cases, I will link what I think is the closest equivalent and/or what I would have purchased.

    I love this tutorial! Just made my first saddle and stem bag with your tutorial and I am so happy with them :) I added a reflective strip to the lower side of the zipper for added security during night time rides 😊 thank you for sharing!

    Love that you're adding more 'instructions' in these, as I'll be following these when I make my own gear for sure, love the diagrams you're adding as well! Great videos!
    Question: Is the webbing on the inside purely for structural purposes? Or just to aesthetically clean it up?

    • @zipworks
      @zipworks  3 года назад

      Thanks! Glad you liked it, I’ll try to include more graphics in future projects as well 👌
      The edge binding on the inside protects the raw edges, makes it look neater AND adds strength and structure to the seam. So, both!

    Hey, great videos! I was curious how you calculate/measure before hand where you need to make the notches to fold? I see them dotted in the PDF but I am pretty dense when it comes to math and can't figure out that calculation. Thanks!

    • @zipworks
      @zipworks  2 года назад +1

      No worries, the calculation for the notch is the height + 1 seam allowance
