  • In this episode, we explore hell anxiety and ask ourselves three important questions to help spark the deconstruction of the indoctrinated belief in hell;
    1. Is this fear rational?
    2. Is hell a just punishment for sin?
    3. What do we believe about god?
Please keep in mind that all everything I say here is my subjective opinion, and is intended to deconstruct fundamentalist/evangelical/conservative Christian ideologies from an ex christian perspective

KARENboomboomROXX - Hello Karen. I appreciate your making that comment and would be grateful to have serious consideration to my reply.
I do not know where or how you came to such a conclusion regarding the crucifixion and the ascension. I can assure you that is not what I believe nor has it ever been the official teachings of the religion of Jesus Christ. In fact, it is darn near the opposite of what we believe. There is a lot to this, certainly more than we could sufficiently cover here, but God does not ‘blame us’ for the sacrifice of Christ, He willingly stretched out His arms for us. This signifies a God who loves us and wants to redeem us into that love, not a wrathful vindictive God seeking to punish us.
Please know I would never try and force my beliefs upon anyone and I darn sure would never tell you what to believe. That is your choice and all existence (in a Christian view) including loving God is predicated upon our freedom to make such choices. I do think it is critical though to understand the choices we make in life. I would not ‘tell you’ to be a Christian. For all I know you may not even believe there is a God. We don’t have to believe in something though, to understand what others actual believe. To not believe in something (or object to something) without actually understanding what we are objecting to isn’t actually an objection. It’s a misunderstand. If you are interested I would be humbled to offer you resources as to what Christianity has always claimed of the resurrection that is in stark contrast to what you stated. That way you can (if inclined) make objections to what we actually believe as opposed to a distortion of it.
I respect your freedom of choice more than you realize, so, I will only do so if requested.
      Peace to All!

You needed only repent the work Jesus started begins when you repent and finishes when your before him only then are you made perfect, if you truly believe then you will sin less than before and as you continue your walk you would become more holy and there would still be times of bountiful fruit and times of lil to none but you would still be saved because of your faith in Jesus would credited to you as righteousness

Hell was not originally prepared for man. It was prepared for Satan and his angels (Matt 25:41). Jude 6 states that fallen angels are placed in chains awaiting judgment. Yet, when men and women join the devil in his work and live in servitude to him, they must suffer the same fate that will befall Satan. If a person ends up in hell, he is lost by his own free choice, not God's arbitrary decision. Such a person has no one to blame but himself. Many see no need to be interested in spiritual things and are indifferent to the pleas of the gospel. Others refuse to obey the gospel or submit to the will of God. Some refuse to believe. Others just love sin more than righteousness. Some, though once obedient, have become unfaithful in service. Many put off obeying until it is too late.
Hell is real. The suffering of it is waiting for the sinful. You can escape the torments found there by giving obedience to Christ now. He will wash away the guilt of your sins and grant you hope of a life of eternal bliss in His presence. All you need to do is humble your heart, ask for forgiveness, and trust in Him, and You dont have to go to hell. Its easy, its free, and its worth it! Why take any chances? The Gospel is good news, why would you be against it? God sent Jesus to save us because God loves each one of us (see John 3:16-17). Jesus prayed for His followers, including us, to be protected from evil and to be one with Him and Heavenly Father. This life is short. Its temporary. You never know when your time is up. Its not about religion, or going to church. Its just between you and God. One on one relationship, through the Holy Spirit, who is given to you upon salvation. The Holy Spirit is the difference. You wont regret it, and you will peace in your heart, and mind, knowing you have assurance of where you will go once your time is up. So please think about it. Its never too late until your life is over, then there is no turning back. So today is the day for salvation. Dont wait! Be blessed!!

@christinawoodard6252there is a whole lot that has been said on this subject, look it up. The subject is called the pascals wager. This idea of doing something, ie being a christian, because it is not that bad compared to the consequence of being wrong, ie going to hell. Generally speaking, the pascals wager is considered a logical fallacy. Secular people use the same trick to manipulate people as well. Taking the shot from a well established criminal, ie pfizer, is not that bad compared to being wrong and infecting/killing your whole family. Fear is a weapon used against you. If you are unable to control your fear, it will control you and others will control you.
There is a thin line between bravery and stupidity, but it is less of a problem if you do something stupid sometimes, then if you never do anything because of fear. That is why those that are trying to control you always try to make the alternative to believing them seem horrible. Like you will burn forever if you do not do what i say or you will kill your family if you do not obey me. F all of them! ✊🏻

All you need to do is repent, which means to turn from sin, and trust in Jesus, by asking Him to take control, and live for Him. Its easy. And when you do that, He sends His Holy Spirit to come live on the inside of you, and transforms your heart and mind. The Holy Spirit is the Key and the difference between religion, and a relationship. It changed my life for the better. The Holy Spirit is Gods seal of salvation, and your evidence you have been truly changed, and are going to heaven. All its takes is faith. You have nothing to lose, and everything to gain. Trust me, hell is very real, and you do not want to end up there and realize you were wrong, and its too late. Look around you, Jesus is real. We are only here on earth for a short time, but eternity is forever. Please re-think about it, and give Jesus a chance. Humble your heart before its too late. We are not guaranteed another day. Are you willing to take that chance? eternity is a long time to be wrong. There is still time to ask Jesus into your life. He cares for you, and does not wish for you to leave this world without Him. Not trying to create fear in you, just letting you know you dont even have to worry about it at all if you just put your trust in Jesus. He cares for you, and wants to give you eternal life in heaven. Its a great message. He did it for me. He completely changed my life, and I know He will do the same for you. Believe me, its worth it. When I was 3, they took me to a “realistic” dramatized movie about hell on a big screen. I was genuinely moritfied by that experience. Throughout my childhood, I said the “Sinner’s Prayer” probably hundreds of times privately because when I would inevitably sin, I felt so guilty and scared of hell that I had to do it again…and again…and again. Years ago, I stopped believing and my life has improved greatly. But I still have anxiety and depression and I’m convinced it’s attributable to my toxic childhood existence.

I have a lot of moments In my life where I think I might die like getting shot on the street and instantly try to “repent” or pour my heart out. Love the way your mind works, Kristi!
I was a fundamentalist Christian for my first 20 years. But questioning basic tenets, as you suggest, brought me to a state of agnosticism. I was too afraid at first to declare myself an atheist, but I knew the god of the Bible was internally inconsistent and monstrous, therefore not likely to be real. Overcoming the fear of hell (because it's a cruel and stupid idea and at odds with justice and reason,) despite deep indoctrination, allowed me to overcome the more general fear of death, which greatly improved my life-even while I searched for some smidgeon of truth about my childhood god or a reasonable facsimile of a personal god like it who cared for me. Didn't find one. It took me another 28 years to finally admit I'm an atheist who is willing to become a theist if there were even a trace of evidence for some sort of god. There has been none.
So I happily live my life, being good just because it's the right thing to do, without anxiety about hell or heaven. I like Mark Twain's quote: "I do not fear death. I had been dead for billions and billions of years before I was born and had not suffered the slightest inconvenience from it." Eternity may or may not be real, but I'll not be around for it, so I don't worry about it. When I die, I figure I'll slip into that great void I came from, not as punishment, but as the natural order of things. I try to make the moments I have count. It's all I can do, and I'm at peace with that.

Hell is like prison. You should be scared of prison, but that’s not its purpose. It exists to uphold justice, to keep things fair for those who do things wrong. You do not have to worry about going to prison because you haven’t broken the law. You should be scared of Hell, but you don’t have to worry about going there. I trust that Christ’s sacrifice is sufficient enough for me *(Romans 5:1-2, 8:1, 8:31-34, Matthew 19:26, 1st John 5:11-13),* and I’ve also examined myself and I’ve ticked every box required to be a Christian *(Galatians 6:4, 1st Corinthians 11:27-31, 2nd Corinthians 13:3-5).* We know that God never lets us down *(Psalm 27, 145, Deuteronomy 31:6, 31:8, Luke 1:37).* We know that he never lies *(Psalm 111:7, Numbers **23:19**, Hebrews 6:13-20).* We know that he is very wise *(Proverbs 2:6, Romans 11:33, 16:27).* Finally, we know that his nature is unchanging *(Malachi 3:6, Matthew 24:35, Hebrews 13:8).* Finally, you do good for the sake of doing good and not out of fear of going to Hell *(1st John 4:19).* Although prison exists, it is not meant to scare you into being good. It is just to uphold justice, and it is the exact same with Hell. It is so much simpler than you realize. I have a friend who is a former Christian and he had the exact same worries about Hell. We debated over it and I proved to him with these verses that his worries were completely baseless. He quietly stopped responding to those points during our debate, so I assume he agreed with me. This video is no different to the arguments that he presented.

      • The reconciliation of all things.

      • “He who overcomes shall not be hurt by the second death.” (Revelation 2:11)
      • The ungodly, when they die, will be tested, purified, refined, and corrected until they came to a point where every one would willfully submit to the authority of Christ and confess that Jesus is Lord to the glory of the Father. This is called the second death.
      • With the crucible and furnace of gold, the Lord tests the heart. (Proverbs 17:3). The lake of fire is not literal, it is symbolism to overcome the second death, demonstrated by the process of a crucible with a body of fire.

I became a christian when I joined an essentially fundamentalist church at about 16 years old. Our teenage Sunday School teachers (beautiful elderly couple) taught us a lesson on eternity one Sunday. This was the illustration:
Imagine a huge steel ball as big as the Sun. And every thousand years a dove flies by it and brushes it with the tip of its wing. When that dove's wing finally wears that huge steel ball down to nothing, eternity will have just begun.
That terrified me, and that continued throughout my adult life until I became post christian. It really didn't matter to me if it was hell or heaven. It terrified me. The idea still does.

"Dear God, please forgive everybody past, present, and future so no one goes to hell." Then I believe "god" granted my prayer. It is not just fear for oneself, but everyone else in your life. Only Jesus provides the way to be right with God and to be assured of going to Heaven
Q - How do I get right with God through Jesus?
While the religions of the world falsely require you to do something like be a good person or observe certain rituals/ traditions to get right with God, Jesus already did what’s necessary on your behalf. What He did was pay the penalty that God, who is holy, justly requires for sin which is death.
Rather than you needing to die and stay dead for your sins, you can ask God to substitute Jesus’ death in place of your death so that the sin penalty is satisfied.
      It’s as easy as ABC.
Admit you’ve sinned against God. Tell Him you are sorry and ask Him to forgive you.
Believe [trust, rely/depend on] that Jesus’ death on the cross was in your place and satisfied God’s penalty for sin.
Confess that Jesus is your Lord and Savior
When you do this you’ve put your trust in what Jesus did on your behalf. God says it this way in Romans 10:11 of the Bible, “Anyone who trusts in Him will never be put to shame.” It means being saved from the shame that would have resulted from foolishly not accepting Jesus’ offer to satisfy God’s sin penalty on your behalf. Its a relationship, not a religious experience.

I'm glad that I freed myself of this worry. I know that some people spend their entire life tormented by this fear - some never have a happy moment. They are already in hell before they even die. It is a terrible waste of a life and many of them become evangelists in order to placate God but, by doing so pass the fear on to a new generation. Some Catholic priests specialise by hanging around in hospitals and hospices trying to get converts. They prey on those who are near death by playing on their fears. It is a ghoulish occupation.

One of the ways I as a former Christian and now atheist got over the fear of Hell was learning about its origins. Hell, specifically hell-fire, is based on the outdated idea of geocentrism (as opposed to the heliocentrism of Copernicus). Geocentrism says the earth is at the center of the universe and that the sun revolved around the earth, where at sunset the sun would descend into the underworld, travel through the underworld, get to the other side of the underworld where it would rise the next morning, then travel throughout the sky, and then have another sunset where the process repeated itself. When the sun was in the underworld (i.e. Hell), the heat from the sun set the underworld on fire, hence the idea of hellfire and torture. We now know that geocentrism is incorrect, which means that hellfire is incorrect. The second thing that got me was realising that hellfire was based on volcanoes. Also, when you look at Greek mythology and how the Gospels were written in Greek, you realise that the Christian idea of Hell was influenced by Tartarus, which was the torture pit in the underworld in Greek mythology/religion. Also in Greek religion, Elysium was similar to Heaven, and the Asphodel Meadows was similar to the Catholic idea of Purgatory. As for Satan or the Devil, Satan originally appears in the book of Job, which has parallels in the Babylonian myth called Ludlul bel nemeqi", which is about the nobleman Shubshi-meshre-Shakkan and the supreme Babylonian god Marduk. When the Jews lived in the Achaemenid Persian empire, they came into contact with the Zoroastrian idea of Angra Mainyu, an evil figure in that religion. They also came into contact with the Persian idea of daevas, which were demons from Persian mythology, which is where the word "Devil" comes from. The Persian daevas are related to the Hindu Devas, which were basically gods. After Alexander the Great conquered the Persian empire in the 330s bc, the Jews came into contact with the Greek underworld god Hades and the Greek half goat/half man god Pan, which is where we get the idea of Satan as a goat figure. The Devil's pitchfork comes from the Greek god Hades' bident, a two pronged weapon similar to the Trident/fishing spear weapon of the Greek sea god Poseidon, who was a brother of Hades. Poseidon and Hades formed a trinity with the supreme Greek god Zeus, whose weapon was a thunderbolt. The Roman god of the underworld was Pluto, who was also a god of wealth, which is probably the origin of the idea of "if you make a deal with the Devil, he can make you rich". This is not surprising because valuable precious stones and metals come from beneath the earth. This is also related to mines and mining.

6 months ago, I went on vacation, and even before vacation started, I was suffering some serious scrupulosity, just "is dirty jokes a sin" "is this a sin' "is that a sin" etc etc, I have had heard about universalism before but I DID NOT bother to look into it at all, after all the self debating on ahat is wrong and right and looking for loop holes and just fearing burning for ever I got tired, I eventually looked into universalism, AND THE THOUGHT OF IT made me so happy, I felt proper joy, and I went into the universalism sub reddit on reddit, and all the theology and everything presented there help me break free of this horrible idea of ECT, I'm so happy, I felt really free the past 6 months, I didn't have to overthink cuz either ways fod mercy will save me and alll my peers, it's just, thinking about it, why would God create everybody and create a framework where people he love has to be BURNED
And if I feel bad for them, does that mean I am more just than God, totally not I thought, so many other thoughts too like "And why would he let people be born fully knowing they'd burn for ever?"

I remember too as a child under 10, witnessing people from my congregation approaching the the pulpit, the pastor playing god and sending some to heaven and others to hell...after being condemned they ran screaming out the side door of the sanctuary....

Fear of being ostracized, fear of hell and by extension death itself, fear of abandonment and rejection and loneliness all have played a major role in my life and still do. I thank you for doing what you’re doing. It seems to me you are all about promoting good and love and joy in life rather than simply attacking a religion out of what seems like anger like I have seen some people do. You seem to do it out of love and compassion for yourself and for others so again thank you it means a lot to people like myself who are questioning a major part of our life.

@@wanderer44-xr5si I appreciate your concern. I’ve been told this my entire life I just don’t know that I believe it anymore. Maybe things will change but much of what I was taught I’m beginning to realize was bull crap and the fact that so few people are willing to engage in conversation about tough things in the Bible does not help. For me I have a real problem with the character of god as evidenced by the numerous atrocities committed in his name referenced to in the Bible let alone our own much more recent history through out the years. I mean we had witch trials, inquisitions, crusades, slavery, the practical annihilation of entire societies and their cultural remnants in the americas. I just don’t know that I can get behind all that anymore. On top of that modern Christianity at the very least is full of fear and shame and guilt from my perspective especially around sex and nonbelief and a plethora of other things. I appreciate the view of Christianity as I’ve grown up Christian my entire life but there are too many things that seem to be highly contradictory to what is proclaimed both in the Bible and in the world. One such example is the fact that most prolife organizations are against better quality sex ed and greater access to contraceptive measures which would be the number one way to eliminate most of the abortions from ever even being desired in the first place. The fact that so many Christian’s are now hypocritical of so many things such as this at least in America and probably elsewhere causes me some serious doubts. Along with that I’ve never felt god in my life never felt his love that I can recall none of my prayers that I can ever recall have ever been answered. The only one that I thought was answered caused me so much pain and suffering I don’t understand how that could have been from a loving god and not myself simply trying to make sense of things as I had seen them. I’m not against faith I hope one day I may find something that will reinstill that hope in me but for now I’m not sure that that will ever happen. Again I appreciate your concern and wish you the best in your endeavors wherever they may lead you.

That is proof that Yahweh was not going to make him "without sin." He will rebuild the temple, bring the remnants Jews back to Israel, end war and suffering, and bring back sacrifices. What helped me was when I researched NDE's. Testimony is what we do in religion when we have something good to say about what Fod did for us today. Testimony is what we use to judge people in court. Testimony is what we use to tell history. So peoples Testimony when they tell us they died and have a story to tell about the other side, must be believed. To me it's either these testimonies are all actors reading a script or there is something to it. Cause there are similar ties all through the narrative told. The stories I heard, is what helped me understand what happens when we die and that we are all here by choice to gain experience. I don't believe in any religion yet I believe all religions have a purpose and is necessary. We all need to strive for unity and food nature. Religion forces us to seperate based on who's in or not but it also brings peace to people's heart. Its all derived from culture. So do what you need to bring peace. Believe what you want. Just don't force others to believe in what you believe just testify and leave it there. Love everyone cause love is the only thing that matters no matter what. Love is the key.

I am literally 30 years into my deconstruction. The guilt has never left because the propaganda is so pervasive and it was designed to make you question everything. Those 30 years have taught me human manipulation of spirituality seeks only power over others, and this is all I think religion was ever built to do. What keeps me going, spiritually, and have been the most powerful things for me are that a) everything about the universe that I am a part of is rational; b) our best life is lived when we choose to put positive energy into the world around us; and, c) if God truly is jealous, irrational, and chooses to put negative, destructive energy into the universe, then I have come to terms that I don't want anything to do with that God, ever.

Same for me. I still have this fear occasionally, but not as bad is it was. I remember having restless nights worrying about going to hell. My deconstruction started when I realised my prayers were never getting answered. This all happened in my early teens. I was blamed and told that because I wasn't praying hard enough, reading my bible without fail, we didn't have food in the house. The old "you just need to have more faith". And at first, I believed it. But eventually those scriptures about "Seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well." and "the Lord does not let the righteous go hungry" when I was literally starving and eating just bread daily, made me understand that probably nothing was out there. It was crazy to see the manipulation tactics used against me when I voiced my thoughts. Some of those cliche "thought stoppers" they used against me, "God works things out for his glory, in god's timing, all things work together for good, etc., etc." I'm now an agnostic.

He was crucified for sedition. Then there was the corrupt priesthood; they saw him as a threat to their livelihood and control of the Temple. They charged him with blasphemy because he said he was God. Now here's the thing about that: According to Jewish law, a blasphemer was to be stoned to death. The realities of eternal damnation, eternal hell, and eternal punishment are frightening and disturbing. But it is good that we might, indeed, be terrified. While this may sound grim, there is good news. God loves us and wants us to be saved from hell. But because God is also just and righteous, He cannot allow our sin to go unpunished. We are not like God. He is Holy. He hates sin, and we love to sin. Therefore, we need forgiveness. Salvation is a free gift. The problem is, we dont want to give Him control, and live apart from sin, and the desires of this world. Its actually not as bad as you might think, because when you do humble your heart and ask for forgiveness, God sends His Holy Spirit to live on the inside of you, so its not like you are still the same person as you were before. The Holy Spirit radically transforms your mind and heart. You suddenly have a whole new attitude and desire. He fills you with this amazing feeling of peace, love, and joy like you never had before. And you dont even know why you feel so good, because your life might not even be so great. But its something you can only understand when you actually come with faith and call upon His name. Its a wonderful message of salvation, and once you truly invite Him into your life, you will know what I am talking about. Its awesome! Its a supernatural change that occurs the moment you become born again. Nothing to do with church. Its just between you and God. The Holy Spirit is the key. So I would really encourage you to think about it, and I pray you find it in your heart one day to give Him a chance. Once you seek Him and truly experience what He has to offer, then you are going to say, I was right. God is good, and I want to thank Him, and praise Him the rest of my life. All you need to do is simply, humble your heart and pray with faith, I repent of my sins, and I turn to You. You said in Your word that if we confess with our mouth the Lord Jesus,, and believe in our hearts that God raised Him from the dead, we shall be saved. I ask You Father to forgive me of all my sins, and ask You to fill me with the Holy Spirit, and take control of my life. Its not the words, its about your heart. Will pray the Holy Spirit touches your heart, because He cares for you, and He has a special purpose for you. Draw near to God, and He will draw near to you. Be blessed.

I was taught about hell in graphic ways as young as 4 years old in Sunday school. It was terrifying! I would cry if anyone I knew who wasn’t Christian died because I thought they’d be in hell. I’m 29 now and still have hell anxiety even though I’ve left the church for about 8 years. Something I thought about even at a young age was what is the cutoff regarding people sent to hell? What age is the cutoff of being cognizant enough to “accept Jesus” and, if you don’t and die, you’ll be sent to hell? How could God send an infant, a child, a special needs person, someone who he allowed to be born somewhere where they’d never be told about God to hell? This was a big reason for the beginning of my deconstruction and decision to leave the church. Thank you for talking about this!
