GMBN Tech #AskGMBNTech Hey Doddy, I‘m thinking to upsize on my Dh bike, by going for a Mondraker Summun in XL. ( I‘m 1,82m) It is a bit too big for me so I want to adjust it with headset-cups. If I use the geokit, which changes the headangle Cups ( +\- 2 degree) on both sides up and down, is it possible to shorten the wheelbase and reach? If so, for how much mm? (20mm?) Love the channel 🤙🏼
#AskGMBNTech hello Doddy from Australia. I have a 2018 norco sight a3 womens model, size medium (but i am a guy) and i am looking to go coil, what can you reccomend on a budget.
#askGMBNTech what do you think of the box three 9 speed drivetrain and will it fit on my bike which previously had 11 speed sram nx. it is a 2018 norco sight a3w.
The only thing you should use on the stanchions is the same oil that's in the fork lowers. Oil in the lower legs is used only to lubricate the fork seals. If the stanchions seem dry then it's worth while topping up the oil in the lower legs.
I've used a dab of Triflow or Boesheild for years and never had an issue. I had a spray called Forxfixion or something that was decent. Funny thing is I've never used actual fork oil and have lots on hand....
I'm so glad that Suntour's instruction about maintaining their basic coil forks is literally just "keep it clean, don't scratch it, and wipe it with an oily rag" might be enough
Pure silicone shock oil used in rc car shocks, I use 20 weight. Put it on and fully wipe it off so it looks dry. No dirt or grime will stick to it and it glides as smooth as a ball bearing on glass.
#AskGMBNTech Really enjoying the recent in depth service videos for the major components such as shocks and forks. In relation to the 125 hour/yearly service interval for shocks and forks, how much further do these services actually go compared to the lower leg service etc? I don't want to be spending extra £££ sending them away if I can be doing it myself at home with a few extra steps. Thanks.
thanks to you and the comments below like MrORosso..I was afraid some would have a bad chemical effect on the seals, I tried wet lube on a rag very slightly applied a coat but frankly all it seems to do is make dirt stick to the fork which quickly ends up doing the inverse of what you wanted
hello, i am from india.. can you just tell me my fork lil bit stock when i ride lil bit offroading i fell my suspension didn't work ... what can i do please suggest me can i put oil or what i donn't know what can i do now pls suggest me
If going for the bossnut make sure it's the new frame with the kink in the seat tube. I have the older model sold with 27.5, I found there isn't enough clearance under full compression. So I have put 26 wheels on.
I spray silicon (CRC) onto stanchions after every ride when bike is upside down & front wheel off. I spray then clean off dirt & dust with rag, pump lowers, wipe again, then spray again to leave clean silicon on stanchions. Same on dropper. Next wheel goes back on then flip bike upright again.
Shims void your frame warranty in most cases, because the great a gap between the seatpost and frame beneath the shim, which makes like a fulcrum and can potentially crack your seat tube
For anyone thinking coil shock too soft, mine is really stiff, like the spring im gonna leave it stiff because it has the low bump sensitivity, but it is incredibly progressive, it has only bottomed out ONCE on a 2 meter high drop but the other sends on that it takes it no problem, just a tip for people
Does it have a progressive Spring? The frame dictates the feeling of a shock for any shock type, so if yours is very progressive, this might just be the frame having a very progressive linkage. Because a regular coil spring is not progressive, that's just physics. I think the question can't be generally answered. You gotta look at the frame in question and either check charts or have a feeling for how progressive the linkage is before getting a coil spring.
A get yourself a tub of Slickoleum and use it on everything but your chain. Made for reciprocating parts including suspension. No need for a dozen different specific products. Dry chain lube and a tub of slickoleum is all you need. Some wd40 for cleaning is nice. Then re-lube whatever you cleaned.
#askGMBNtech Hi guys In june this year is was told by a doctor that I wont make 50 because if my weight, I was 27.5 stone. That day I went out and bought a Kona lava dome 29er (hardtail), joined a gym, started a strict diet, and as an extra push to myself I enrolled myself on the London to Brighton off road ride for the British heart foundation. 6 month on I am now 20 stone, I completed the london to brighton ride in 8 hours but I was finding that on the 29er my centre gravity felt far too high for me and I lost all confidence on descents. Three weeks ago I went and bought myself a Calibre triple B, full susser, 27.5 wheel. I feel a lot more grounded and confident on decents, and it is a much more comfortable bike but the issue I'm having is I know can ride up to 50 miles on a sunday off road with not much exhaustion but the full susser seems to be zapping my energy, I rode the Dirty Santa event in Surrey two weeks ago and had to give up 13 miles in coz I was so exhausted, is this normal? Cheers guys Love the show
More power to you!! I envy your dedication. About the full suspension bike: i personally only ride fullies, tho factors that rob me energy are: too little air in my tires and too little air in my shock (or not flicking the climb switch) How is your progress so far?
Could you guys please produce an episode about creative storage solutions? Many of us living in cities are storing our bikes in our apartments. A comparison about different non standard wall mounts would be GREAT.
I have a Rockrider 9.1 2014 and that has a internal seat tube of 29.2 and had to get a shim to fit a dropper it is fine. Decathlon has change that to a normal size now.
#AskGMBNTech I have just bought a new bike (The 2015 kona hei hei hei) and it has rockshox suspension front and rear. In the front there is a rockshox recon gold rl and it is making a slurping noise and a sucking noise. Can you tell me why this is happening or how I can fix it? Thanks, Will
I’ve used Muc Off Silicone Shine on my MTB fork and Motorcycle Stanchions for a while now and it’s superb 👍 I’m sure it looks after the seals aswell as keeps it super smooth sliding too
Don’t do it I always got 50 hours before my Ohlins got sticky and needed lower leg service. I saw a video that said lube the fork did it and had to do a lower leg service within a week at 20 hours. Don’t do it!!
Dry lube wound be better! Wet will attract dirt which will be pushed and or caught by/in your seals while riding potentially causing micro abrasions on your stanchions. They are internally lubed, keep them clean after/before a ride.
I just use Fenwicks suspension lube. Works every time. No stiction whatsoever. Just make sure you protect your discs otherwise you’ll contaminate them.
Anybody remember or got a link to the video in which Doddy is actually lubing his forks. I thinks one of those videos like ‘10 maintenance must do’s’ or ‘how to maintain your bike’ something along those lines thanks
Ok, well, muc-off silicone spray is around £10, a generic silicone spray can from a hardware store or an autoparts store between £3 and £5... Is it the same?
I concur with Henry .at the dh races Jordi will absolutely drill it into you not to use silicone suspension spray on your fork seals . It offers no benefit to a well cleaned well maintained fork and really is only to be used on a fork not been serviced for a while to offer a little help to dry seals etc .it can actually dry out the foam rings of there nice fresh oil . Tf the man himself suggests using a wet lube or indeed a drop of your fork oil but insists in must be thoroughly wiped off of any residue after.
Hello, I recently put a RockShox Recon on my 19” 1990 Fisher Supercaliber.. What I would like to know is, is the stand over height supposed to increase bad enough to have an effect on the ability to stand over the bike when standing over with feet flat on the ground. Is there anything I don’t know about to increase the ability to stand over this bike? Thanks Scott Anderson
#AskGBMNTech Just wanting to say that I have been running SLX levers with SAINT calipers for few years now and I get the modulation that works for me as I've found saint levers seemed either on or off and in a over the bars violent way. And add to the talk about the FUEL EX7 I have a 2014 and I run it with a dhx4 coil and its my jump play around bike as it just wants to jump off everything around unlike my DEVINCI WILSON that wants to swallow up everything i put in front of it and at the speed I've got the nerve for so hopefully this may have helped someone out there from BEAUTIFUL VANCOUVER ISLAND VANISLEREDNECK P.S . Hey guys, know I'm late watching this vid, but I had a question. How are you liking the muc-off products compared to wd40 bike lubes? I was thinking of getting the wd40 all conditions lube and would love your opinion on both brands if you can spare the time. Cheers
Love the show! As a rider recently returning to the sport, your videos have helped no end! How does seat angle and position on the rails affect climbing ability? Specifically on punchy steep sections. #AskgmbnTech
#AskGMBNtech Doddy, I’ve recently just bought my first bike, a used ‘16 Trek Marlin 7. I’m already in love with riding and considering upgrading. Would I be better off upgrading my bike with a new fork, dropper, and the like, or would I be better off to save up and spend more on a new bike at the end of the model year? Cheers
#AskGMBNTech Hi, I have recently just got myself a Trek procaliber 9.5 and was wondering if I could upgrade the shimano microspline freehub for something else for better pedal engagement as the lag is annoying when tackling technical uphill sections?
#askgmbntech Hi guys! Loving the content. I'm currently running a manitou fork and would like to install a mudguard. However, finding one that fits a reverse arch fork is proving a little tricky. Any recommendations?
I sprayed the stanchions of my Marzocchi Z1MCR (2002) with silicone spray before every ride. No wear whatsoever of the anodizing after years of riding.
#askgmbntech hi there, love the show. I just bought a Cube Reaction Pro 2021 and I want to fit a dropper. The seattube size is 27,2. I can't find a hole to route an internally cabled dropper. Can I just make a hole in the frame or is my only option an externally routed dropper. Thanks!
Question: I'm building a dirt jumper up and was wondering what are some good tires, would the Maxxis holy roller in 26 inches be good or any other sort of tires? and what would be a good frame for a taller rider
#AskGMBNTech Hi doddy, I have a specialized pitch (bottom end hardtail) with some cheap sr suntour coil forks on them. Somehow they're is now 20mm more of the stanchions visible than there should be. I was looking to replace them with some cheap air forks but can't find any with straight steerer tubes. Is there an alternative? Thanks.
If your bike also has a 100mm quick release axle then I’d strongly recommend a manitou markhor. If it is that you consider $250 to be cheap but as far as I’ve seen it’s the best upgrade to my bike so far so it’s well worth it in my opinion
#AskGMBNTech Hi Doddy. What are your top 5 ranked personal favorites for rear suspension designs? My personal favorite is Giant's Maestro design which I believe is a derivative of some earlier design. I liked the rigid rear triangle.
#askgmbntech Hello again. Another fork question. Whenever I let air out of my Fox 34 2014, blue liquid comes out. I want to check if there are volume spacers in the air chamber, but I am scared to let any more out. I think the amount is decreasing on each release, but I am to scared to find out if it will stop eventually. Any help much appreciated!
It is just Fox Float Fluid, an anti friction lube to keep your sleeves on the air piston lubricated. There will be more than plenty in your airchamber, so dont worry about that little amount you are releasing when you let the air out. It will get refilled (about 5ml) when serviced.
measure before you buy: you probaly need external cable routing, bottle cage mounts may limit insertion dept, check how much seatpost you need sticking out of the frame and how much travel you can fit in that space
#ASKGMBNTECH Hey Techies. So i just got my new bike. It is a Cube Stereo 120 Race 29 2020 that have this rear shock: RockShox Deluxe Select+, 190x45mm, Rebound Adjust, Lockout. I would LOVE a remote lockout so i dont have to reach for it while riding. Lots of ups and downs trails in Denmark. Thanks in advance and keep the GREAT content coming :D
Are you sure you need one there is not much of a purpose to them, like you have bought a good bike and if remote lockouts really made youre ride better theyd be on youre bike. Otherwise email rockshox and ask them is there a specific lockout damper.
#AskGMBNTech G’day there, greetings and a merry Xmas from Down Under. I’ve done myself a mischief on the rear wheel of my 2021 Norco Sight A1 - properly wrecked the E13 LG1 rim. I’m considering building it up again on a DT rim because I’ve had good experiences with them. I’m a bigger rider at 105kg/187cm and ride quite aggressively - or so I’m told. I’m considering whether the EX511 or the FR560/70 might be the better option to go with... perhaps even running CushCore or something similar. My main goal is to never have to rebuild a rear wheel again if I can help it - 4 rebuilds is enough for one year. Any help or advise would be appreciated.
Hi Guys, Running my Trek Roscoe 7 2020 for just shy of three months and the Judy fork has developed a new sound. Sounds like water or air in an oil fork on compression and rebound. Still runs fine but is this I should be worried about and take a look at. Thanks in advance for the expert advise in advance. @
Hi Doddy #AskGMBNTech. Which bike frame to go to if I set up a mullet bike, a 27.5 or a 29er (27.5 frame with 29er wheel and fork or a 29er frame with 27.5 wheel?) And what size of tyres to get? I hope my query makes sense. Cheers!
#ASKGMBNTECH Hi Doddy, I recently broke a frame and want to swap the parts over to a new one myself. Where would you suggest I start to make sure the new frame I purchase works with my old components. I am mostly concerned about the bottom bracket fitting. Thank you Doddy!
Well I believe BB is the least of your concerns unless you were running some high end BB, BB-s are quite cheap and easy to replace most Shimano stuff is around or under 30$. If I were you my first concern would be the headset, as the fork and good headset are quite expensive combo, Dropouts, were you running QR wheels or thru axles ? Seatpost diameter, especially if you were running a dropper this can be a expensive mistake if you get the wrong size, however as mentioned in the video there are shims that you can use, but keep in mind that will only work if your seatpost diameter is smaller than the seattube diameter on the frame. At this point if everything matches you can consider BB. And also one quick thing be sure if the old bike was Boost, get the new bike Boost too.
@@mstvir Interesting and thank you for the reply. The bike was a 9Zero7 frame. If I can find the specs from 9Zero7 will that give me every thing I need or do I have to measure the headset, BB and seat post to have accurate measurements.
@@vincentclaps2375 well yes the spec sheet should contain most if not all of the details that you need. If you don't mind me asking, what model and year bike it was ?
#AskGMBNTech Doddy you legend. have learnt alot off your knowledge since getting back into two wheels, thank you for blessing us. Same goes for Blake, Neil and the rest of the team. My question is on the Norcro FS Fluid 3, Ive got myself the brand new 2020 model in the dark green which Ive had for about a week or so now and have been absolutely loving it since getting back into riding two wheels, pretty much riding it everyday. What do you think of this bike? What about the rest of the GMBN team thoughts? What upgrades do you think i should give to her if any? The tektro brakes it runs are pretty weak for stopping power, i have to really pull them in with two fingers on the front and they only slow down to say the least and ive been on them hard so they should be worn in by now. They have seemed to also get some bad reviews, so not sure if i should upgrade anything to do with the brakes or try giving them a bleed/adjust something like that? And also with my fork/shock im running what came with them which is a suntour 130mm fork and x fusion 120mm shock, in future if i wanted to say upgrade to more travel maybe 140mm, am i able to do that or is that going to weaken or damage my frame? Hope to see you guys in Aus Perth so we can have a shred!

thats what he wants keeps the bike industry coining it in just put gators on the forks and forget about them.

It’s always a bad idea to use any lube on your forks because this only helps transport the dirt into the fork while compressing. Something to consider

#AskGMBNTech Hi, I have recently just got myself a Trek procaliber 9.5 and was wondering if I could upgrade the shimano microspline freehub for something else for better pedal engagement as the lag is annoying when tackling technical uphill sections?
I use fork oil, compress the fork, wipe the dirt lifted out the seals and polish off the excess oil so doesn't attract dust.
Can I install a double barrel rear shock on Santa Cruz Bronson C.??
#askgmbntech Hi guys! Loving the content. I'm currently running a manitou fork and would like to install a mudguard. However, finding one that fits a reverse arch fork is proving a little tricky. Any recommendations?
what brand silicone spray is the cheapest
I sprayed the stanchions of my Marzocchi Z1MCR (2002) with silicone spray before every ride. No wear whatsoever of the anodizing after years of riding.
Nice one Alan! Not a bad idea at all
I have a giant stance e+2 2020 it has a sr suntour xcr 34 with 130mm of travel what would be a good upgrade
Hi #AskGMBNTech my bike when I try to fakie it down shifts when I back pedal is there any way to fix this or do I just have to get on with it
Maybe consider a bigger front chain ring so chain line is more straight with your rear gear chosen for coming into a fakie at the speed you need.
What happened to chain lube question ?
#askgmbntech hi there, love the show.
I just bought a Cube Reaction Pro 2021 and I want to fit a dropper. The seattube size is 27,2.
I can't find a hole to route an internally cabled dropper. Can I just make a hole in the frame or is my only option an externally routed dropper. Thanks!
Question: I'm building a dirt jumper up and was wondering what are some good tires, would the Maxxis holy roller in 26 inches be good or any other sort of tires? and what would be a good frame for a taller rider
Yes
Thank you for this information I apply triflow to my stanchions before every ride and to my seatpost)
Can I use super lube multi purpose synthetic oil for my forks
Can i use silicon based gun oil?
what size is the rear shock
#AskGMBNTech Hi Doddy. What are your top 5 ranked personal favorites for rear suspension designs? My personal favorite is Giant's Maestro design which I believe is a derivative of some earlier design. I liked the rigid rear triangle.
Hi can i put silicon grease
#askgmbntech Hello again. Another fork question. Whenever I let air out of my Fox 34 2014, blue liquid comes out. I want to check if there are volume spacers in the air chamber, but I am scared to let any more out. I think the amount is decreasing on each release, but I am to scared to find out if it will stop eventually. Any help much appreciated!
I would look up what it is but its probably oil or something but double check with fox or the internet and you should be ok
Jude Chandler I had that for a little while, mine was red. It stops eventually, after about 5 deflates and reflates. It you are unsure visit your lbs
It is just Fox Float Fluid, an anti friction lube to keep your sleeves on the air piston lubricated. There will be more than plenty in your airchamber, so dont worry about that little amount you are releasing when you let the air out. It will get refilled (about 5ml) when serviced.
@@braedenwallace4698 cheers. I live in london so no lbs for forks unfortunately. looks like its all okay now tho!
@@orrprosegaming7851 cool. thanx
Can you put a dropper post on a budget bike
Of course you can, there is nothing limiting you, just get the right diameter.
@@mstvir cheers man
measure before you buy: you probaly need external cable routing, bottle cage mounts may limit insertion dept, check how much seatpost you need sticking out of the frame and how much travel you can fit in that space
You might be able to find an upgrade kit online
Or sell it and upgrade
@@tonymcnally9355 i have been trying to. But i cant seem to find the rotate thing with a spring for the rear shock☹️
Are you sure you need one there is not much of a purpose to them, like you have bought a good bike and if remote lockouts really made youre ride better theyd be on youre bike. Otherwise email rockshox and ask them is there a specific lockout damper.
@@tonymcnally9355 since i lock it and open it many times on a ride id love to get it😬

G’day there, greetings and a merry Xmas from Down Under.
If I were you my first concern would be the headset, as the fork and good headset are quite expensive combo,
Dropouts, were you running QR wheels or thru axles ?
@@mstvir it was a 2014 aluminum frame.
Hope to see you guys in Aus Perth so we can have a shred!
easy upgrade would be bigger rotors and metallic brake pads
@@ultiss Thankyou for the advice! I did think maybe the best bet was to either go some new brake pads or rotors so will be looking into that for sure
