A Train Almost Ruined the Town But Something Saved People

- Traveling by train is one of the safest ways to get somewhere. But what's that? You feel it accelerate, and soon it's already moving at breakneck speed, ignoring stop signs, stations, and other trains. You're pinching yourself in a futile attempt to wake up, but it’s no nightmare - you’re on a runaway train!
It was a cold winter night on January 11, 2004. Two people were supposed to arrive at the train yard that night: 31-year-old engineer Eduard and his 24-year-old assistant Alexander. But when it was time for their shift to begin, the engineer was nowhere to be seen. They eventually got hold of Eduard, and the engineer simply said that he’d overslept. His health readings were normal, and he was totally sober. Everything was fine, nothing out of routine here, except maybe the fact that instead of his uniform, the man was wearing a suit and tie, as if he was going to some important event. But nobody seemed to find that odd…

SUMMARY:
- After the doctors gave him the green light, the engineer was ready to go. He climbed up into the cab, and that's when his assistant noticed another oddity. Eduard didn't put a new tape into the train's speedometer, which was a serious violation of the rules.
- After the train left the loading station, the engineer broke protocol once more by refusing to check if the brake system was working correctly.
- As the train came toward the railway haul Volkhovstroy 2 - Kukol’, the station operator reported that there was another train approaching the station. Alexander the assistant screamed in horror when the engineer hit the controls to accelerate!
- When Alexander tried to bring his co-worker to his senses, the much stronger engineer answered back with physical threats.
- At 2:58am, the train blew through the red light at Kukol’ station, careened on a totally unscheduled route, and dashed toward the main track.
- Everything changed at Valya station. At 3:02am, when the runaway had already blown through the previous stop at Myslino, the Valya station operator came up with the idea to cut the power on the line.
- At 3:45am, the train finally lost its forward momentum and came to a stop. Alexander the assistant immediately saw his only chance to escape.
- When the police got to the train at 4:14am, they discovered the engineer on the floor, completely out of it. The delusional man was taken to the hospital for mental health treatment.
- Had the train continued its crazed path to destruction, it would’ve made it to the town of Tikhvin, population: 60,000.
- It happened on May 15, 2001 in northwest Ohio. Locomotive #8888 (hence the nickname) was moving a string of 47 freight cars on the Walbridge - Kenton line.
- Things were going smoothly until the train's 35-year-old engineer noticed that one switch was strangely misaligned. The man decided that since the train was moving quite slowly, he’d have more than enough time to get down, fix the switch, and climb right back up into his cabin.
- Before the engineer left the cab, he’d set the wrong brake.
- When the engineer tried to switch a special brake that would’ve slowed the train down to a crawl, he accidentally set the engine not to brake but to accelerate!
- At first, they tried to stop the train with the help of a portable derailer, but these attempts failed. Then the police started to shoot at the emergency switch, which serves to cut off the fuel supply.
- As soon as the runaway's speed dropped to 11 mph (18 kph), engineer Jon Hosfeld, who’d been waiting up ahead, managed to climb into the cab and shut down the engine.

Hey there, BrightSiders! Do you remember any movies about vehicles that lose control?

Unstoppable
Unstoppable is was based on the crazy eights incident.
The second train incident almost matches with the 2010 movie Unstoppable
Same idea
Even I thought of the same movie.
Me too
The guy after me is going to say the same
the movie was actually based on the crazy 8's incident.

For those of you wanting a bit more of info on the actual locomotive 8888 here you go. It was a SD40-2 owned by CSX transportation. The locomotive was painted in CSX’s YN2 paint. The engine was a former Conrail unit which CSX acquired in 1999 after the brake up of Conrail. Multiple museums attempted to purchase it, but in the end, it was rebuilt by CSX into a SD40-3 numbered 4389.
Nice information. I’m Trying to figure what happened To CSX 8392 after it was sold to NRE
pretty scary knowing this train went flying by my home town
I love that you added the crazy 8's incident. I love the story because it inspired the movie "Unstoppable"
Unstoppable is my favorite movie with real people in it and is realistic
CSX 8888 is something you can not miss
Unstoppable was filmed in public
Unstoppable is actually my favourite movie!
8:42 actually applied the independent brake and the dynamic brake, the dynamic brake uses the train's generator to power the brakes, and the engineer set the throttle to 8 (basically: full throttle) but the independent brake disabled the dynamic, so the train sped off on full throttle. Also, what are those readings? BTW there was another conductor, but they were now actually on the train, and the two ppl were in contact via radio, the conductor ran to get help when the train sped up and the engineer didn't radio back. But that was after the conductor told the engineer many times that the train was getting a little to far for comfort. The conductor radioed 4 times in total, but only got two through to the engineer.

When I saw the title. I was thinking back to how the Cloquet Fire of 1918 started. It was a dry time of the year and sparks flew from the train. Igniting the brush. Thing is, the train engineer disobeyed the management and got many of the townsfolks out.
but one runaway train i know about is the cojan pass. it's weight was underestimated, and when it went downhill, it's brakes failed, and exploded into a neighbrohood.
I remember seeing a video of a train crash when a GNR excursion un coupled from some of its coaches on a hill so it could climb to the stop, the engine slipped back into the uncoupled coaches and causing them to roll into another passenger train

the El Cajon pass derailments of 1989 1994 and 1996 are some good ones
CSX 8888 wasn't able to be preserved then went from an SD40-2 yn2 to an SD40-3 yn3 in 2017. CSX 8888 is now CSX 4389

Yes, the following was a real disaster: "The Lac-Mégantic rail disaster occurred in the town of Lac-Mégantic, in the Eastern Townships region of Quebec, Canada, at approximately 01:15 EDT,[1][2] on July 6, 2013, when an unattended 74-car freight train carrying Bakken Formation crude oil rolled down a 1.2% grade from Nantes and derailed downtown, resulting in the fire and explosion of multiple tank cars. Forty-two people were confirmed dead, with five more missing and presumed dead.[3] More than 30 buildings in the town's centre, roughly half of the downtown area, were destroyed,[2] and all but three of the thirty-nine remaining downtown buildings had to be demolished due to petroleum contamination of the townsite.[4] Initial newspaper reports described a 1-kilometer (0.6 mi) blast radius.[5]" (Wikipedia).

Well i do remember the run away that went straight into a house in the middle of the night while people where inside luckily it was night and the bedroom was upstairs and the train crashed trough the downstairs wall
Did you know that a train got directed onto the main line, it stopped, but an express train was going full speed on the same track. The driver decided to make the train go extremely fast so it could run away. He jumped out the cab and ran. The express train stopped, but the other train had already reached a high speed. It finally stopped 6 miles after it lost it’s water.

You forgot to mention something about the crazy 8 incident: Many people attempted to board the engine while it was still moving, but they all chickened out last minute because of how fast the engine was going.

Nowadays most class 1 locomotives in North America are equipped with PTC (Positive Train Control) where a set of buttons have to be pressed every few minutes to make sure the engineer is alert. If they aren't pressed in time, the locomotive hits the brakes and shuts down.
I would like to ellaborate on 8888: when they claimed the setting was to accelarate, it was also that the dynamic brake was turned on and activating the throttle will slow the train down, but since the brakes were completely burned, that was how the runaway even started
There was on that exploded in Québec coming from the states the engineer whent to sleep
"Bright Side"
I love the 8888 CSX train incident.. there’s also a movie about it.. it’s called “unstoppable”
So, you have a crazy Russian putting lives at risk.....and you have heroic Americans who worked together to stop a major catastrophe. I am proud to be an American.
*Legend has it the train is still Driving to this day.*
Legend has is that Crazy Eight incident was staged to make news topic and a movie. The engineer secretly said.

We love our trains in Clemson SC. Go Tigers!
11:09 28 Apr 2013, a single U20C locomotive runs from the train depot, reaching a top speed of 145 km/h without a driver while warming up the engine, the brakes are also damaged during the trip because the locomotive is at full power when the brakes are applied and the reverser lever is in the forward position.
this is the crazy Eights incident, which is what inspired unstoppable

Recently the Hoboken Terminal had a train that nearly destroyed the entire station. Some died, many injured. It was awful to see and how scared everyone gets in addition to event. It’s basically a NYC station, and it’s always the fear of the public when accidents happen like this that it’s another terrorist attack.
In Scotland about 30 years ago there was a train that did almost completely destroyed a station
I’ve heard about 2 separate trains that lost their brakes while going down the same hill and flew off the tracks and destroyed houses on separate occasions.
