- You might think that the times of the Titanic are long gone, but what if I told you that less than 20 years ago there was another ship that almost followed in the steps of the Titanic? This time, abandoned by their captain, around 600 passengers would have lost their lives if not for the quick-thinking and courageous cruise ship entertainers.
The Oceanos, built in France and first launched in July 1952, was a Greek-owned cruise ship. On August 3, 1991, after a serious delay, it set off from East London, South Africa, on its fateful voyage toward Durban. Even before the journey started, the ship had already started to wear...

SUMMARY:
- The Oceanos, built in France and first launched in July 1952, was a Greek-owned cruise ship that traveled along the Marseilles - Madagascar - Mauritius route.
- Usually, the ship's crew would’ve organized a "sail-away" party with the entertainers and musicians on the deck outside. But everything seemed to be going wrong this time.
- The problem was that, in an attempt to make up for the previous delay, the Oceanos entered rough seas. But it turned out to be a fatal mistake.
- The situation was much, much more dangerous because the Oceanos encountered rogue waves, also called monster waves. They’re incredibly large and unexpected; they appear all of a sudden and can wreck even large ships and ocean liners.
- The ocean water was flooding the ship through the main drainage pipes, which meant that it was uncontrollably spilling out of toilets, showers, and the water disposal system.
- As soon as the crew realized that the ship was beyond hope and couldn't be saved, they got ready to abandon it. They didn’t follow the standard procedure of locking the portholes on the lower decks, and they even failed to raise the alarm!
- The captain and his crew weren't going to save the day. They departed on several lifeboats without looking back. Luckily, the ship still had its entertainers.
- Moss Hills performed on the Oceanos as a singer and guitarist. He could tell that the ship was having a problem, but at that time, he hadn't realized yet how serious the situation was.
- As soon as Hills realized the horror of the situation, as well as the fact that they couldn't expect any help from the panicking crew, he sprang into action.
- The South African Air Force and the South African Navy sent 16 rescue helicopters that were to arrive at any moment.
- Meanwhile, Moss Hills organized an orderly evacuation process where children and women were the first to use the remaining lifeboats.
- All 571 people who were on board the ship after the crew abandoned it were saved. Moss and Tracy Hills, as well as Butler and Boltman, were among the last to leave the ship.
- At about 3:30 PM the next day, the Oceanos touched the sand bottom, 300 ft (90 m) below the ocean’s surface.

The fact that there’s a video of Oceanos sinking is just insane. Seeing a somewhat modern cruise ship just sinking is mind blowing. And the fact that not a single life was lost is even more mind blowing.

Thirty-two passengers and crew died when the Costa Concordia struck an underwater rock and capsized on Jan. 13, 2012. Francesco Schettino, Italian ex-captain, was charged with manslaughter, causing a shipwreck, and of abandoning his crippled cruise ship off Tuscany while passengers were still on board. As of 2015, he is serving a 16-year prison sentence.
he should get Life sentence ! capitans get paid huge amount of money they have all the privileges possible on board they are like Semi-Gods.
They have responsibilities and they must pay twice as a regular person.

Carlos Robins you would think it would be more than 16 years . I still think it’s laughable that I’m the 100th year of the Titanic ( it Olympic ) they still have manhood mistakes like this.
The Captain and senior officers should have been prosecuted for abandoning ship and not alerting the passengers that the ship was sinking

A Greek board of inquiry found Avranas and four officers negligent in their handling of the disaster.
He [the captain] was never incarcerated and Epirotiki gave him command of another ferry until his retirement.
I remember when this happened. Still amazed that the captain was off the ship before his passengers. Sheeze

The difference between this story and the Titanic is that the Titanic's captain and the senior officers loaded and lowered the lifeboats knowing that there weren't enough for everybody and that they were probably all going to drown. Only 2 of the senior officers survived, 1 was ordered into a lifeboat with very little crew in it, and the other managed to swim to a boat after the rest were lowered.

alright. The Cruise lines Claimed It was somehow safe... when the passengers would leave the ship. they will comment on how rusty it was. That was the last Trip of The oceanos.
I really hope that Captain and officers got in deep deep trouble. They should have set off the alarm and helped everyone off instead of running away like cowards. Thank goodness there were brave music players who helped make sure all the people got off.
The captain was protected by his company (Epirotiki) and wasn't given a punishment from what I can find. He's most likely retired now, but looks like he got away with it.

It was actually all the high-level staff oddly enough, the stewards and other low-level crew were left to die by the officers. The captain was dragged onto the ship before he could leave by the staff and later pushed a passenger aside and forced the South African diver to haul him into the helicopter.
The captain was charged with manslaughter and is know facing a 16 years prison sentence so he has 8 more years left I got this information from somebody else in the comment section

It’s amazing to me that he was never incarcerated and was given another ship to operate. Through all this he never once apologized. What a sad little man. Moss hill should have been given a ship to manage since he and his friends were the only true men here.

Pity that Greek coward had minimal legal punishment. Should have been charged with multiple attempted manslaughter charges and imprisoned for life, rather than running another Greek ferry for a number of years, and now enjoying retirement (74 and free as far as I can tell). 👿

It was the officers, not the crew entirely, that jumped ship. Stewards and regular sailors were also left to die by the officers.

Finally a titanic replica that was actually saved completely
The Oceanos was saved by two performers, not one guy. Also, the hull's plating didn't give in. The Oceanos was being rented by another company which didn't take good care of the ship. Passengers were surprised by the rust and grime on the ship when they were boarding, and the ship's water pumping system had recently been "repaired." The repairmen did a bad job repairing the pump. Eventually, from the waves hitting the ship, the pump broke and water filled the engine room very slowly. The engines were running when they short-circuited and exploding, plunging the ship into darkness. The crew all prepared lifeboats and boarded, leaving the passengers on the ship to save themselves. The captain was pulled back on board by the performers, staying on the ship until rescue arrived. No lives were lost, and the whole thing was caught on video.

The big difference between this and the Titanic is that the Titanic sank in about 2 hours, Oceanos held on until everyone was safely off the ship and didn't sink until 18 hours had passed.

At a museum, I am good friends with a security guard, he said that he was on the ship and that he was just reading a book, when he felt water, he said that he immediately went to escort his family which included about 16 people but went to find out that they were already on a life boat

There was no excuse for Captain and officers bailing out. Thank goodness for the musicians. If I'd been one of the men who helped passengers get to safety and the captain asked me how the evacuation went, I would have been tempted to puch his lights out.
