A Man Who Failed to Save the Titanic

- The sinking of the Titanic is, to this day, one of the worst catastrophes to come out of a long chain of unfortunate and untimely events. And that chain that would decide the cruel fate of the great Unsinkable Ship started with… a tiny key.
It seemed like such an insignificant little thing. So trivial that the man who’d had it with him completely forgot to hand it over to the person who’d desperately need it at a critical moment. That man was 37-year-old David Blair, and he was holding the key to the locked cabinet where all the binoculars for the lookouts were stored.

SUMMARY:
- White Star Line, the shipping company that owned the Titanic, decided to replace David Blair with Henry Wilde, the Chief Officer of the Titanic’s sister ship, RMS Olympic.
- Blair wrote in a postcard to relatives that he was pretty upset about being replaced. In a hurry by the unexpected change or perhaps because of this distress, Blair forgot to hand the key to the binocular cabinet over to Officer Wilde!
- Soon after the Titanic left the port, the crew realized they wouldn’t be able to open the cabinet.
- Yes, the huge iceberg could’ve been noticed earlier even without binoculars, but perhaps in different conditions.
- There were no waves crashing up against the iceberg to give an audible warning, and there was no moonlight reflecting off the giant hunk of floating ice to make it sort of glow.
- Once Fred Fleet finally saw it at 11:39pm on April 14, 1912 and famously reported “Iceberg! Right ahead!” to the command bridge, it was already too late.
- Another cruel twist of fate is that there was a desperate shortage of lifeboats, with 2,224 people on board and only enough boats to save 1,178 lives.
- So what ever happened to David Blair and that cursed key? Well, he realized his mistake too late. But he continued to work as a mariner and even received a Bravery Medal from the Royal Humane Society in 1913 for saving a crewmember of the Majestic.
- As for the notorious key, for a long time he kept it as a reminder of the tragedy he’d miraculously avoided.
- It was sold in 2007 for £78,000, which would be about $135,000 by today’s rate.
- On the 100th anniversary of the sinking, they sold a letter written by 33-year-old Wallace Henry Hartley, a violinist and the bandleader on the Titanic. The letter was sold for £90,000 (equivalent to $125,000 today).
- But the most expensive, and no doubt the most exclusive finding, is Hartley’s violin. It was sold for a jaw-dropping price of £900,000 ($1.3 million today).

They could have simply broken the lock.
They didn't realize how important they needed it at the time
But good point
As the narrator said
The ship was thought to be unsinkable so they weren’t necessary
Pride tragically comes before a fall
exactly my point.
Rob S The general consensus among the crew was that The Titanic was "Unsinkable"
So therefore they'd foolishly assumed that it was unnecessary to get a pair of binoculars from the locked binocular cabinet anyway
Unfortunately, they'd put their Faith in the hype about The Titanic being an "Unsinkable" ship only to discover that their faith in that hype was sorely misjudged
But wat with
If 78,000 pounds is $135,000 in today’s money how is 90,000 pounds only $125,000 in today’s money?????
Different years purchased with inflation.
yelp i thought that odd too.
I thought that weird too
Inflation. The key was sold in 2007, 12 years of inflation. Not to mention pre financial crisis. The letter was sold in 2012, with only 7 years of inflation.
The most expensive tickets for the Titanic II in 2022 are estimated to be at $100,000.00...
Its insane how a key could just change course of history

I think the real culprits are those engineers or whoever who declared/claimed that the ship was unsinkable.
You know I think you're right. Think about it, because of that no one cared about shortage of life boats. Why would they "its unsinkable" I mean if there had been enough, so many people could have been saved.

In hindsight the captain should've sailed in reverse to the ship they could see 20 miles away.
If they sailed in reverse the water pressure would be much less on the damage sections so the flooding would have been less, and who knows maybe the pumps could had kept up.
But hindsight is always great in these circumstances.
Everytime I listen about titanic. The only thing that comes to my mind is "We should never be 100%sure about anything". Overconfidence can definitely cause damages😟
I don’t know the full story of the titanic but I’m still so interested in these kinds of vids
Totally unprofessional of the captain and crew to not make sure that they had access to all their gear
Even if the lookouts had binoculars, they still may have trouble spotting the iceberg due to the weather conditions - no moon and calm seas causing mirages
No global warming = no icebergs
No icebergs = titanic saved..
Bruh..
Not a spoiler!
Nice video thanks
Love how they are talking about a violin and show him playing a cello...
Great information about the missing key. However if the key was turned over, there could have been a chance it could have giving the passengers and crew to be saved. I enjoyed the history update.
No it wouldnt have saved them... The night was cold and the iceburg was blue as it had flipped over before coming into sight - A mirage formed over the burg they only could have seen it when it was far too late
Blame two watchers on the poole, for being distracted with Jack and Rose smooching each other beneath them . 🤣🤣🤣
This was really interesting and I took some notes on this🚢📝
You forgot to tell us about that poopy head that thought there were too many lifeboats and they were blocking the view of the ocean (which had enough seats for everybody on the ship) and commanded to remove some lifeboats. He literally was a big cause of people dying. Then he lived his life really sadly and I'm happy about that because if it weren't for that poopy head then 99% of the people would have survived.
I always jump to the part where the window crash and the water wash over the captain in order to get to the most exciting parts in the titanic movie.

Back In February of 2000 in my 6 grade Social studies class we did a unit on the Titanic and this story is coming back to me now
BS Times is right...not prying open the key cabinet for The Most Important item is RIDICULOUS.
The term unsinkable is so wrong, the designers never said this, she was equipped with more lifeboats then needed by law. She also wasn't going fast to prove anything, the normal thing most captains did at that time was speed through icefields, the quicker you can get through the better. I have seen so few video's on the Titanic that get the facts right.
If one wants to get technical Both technical calculations and structural engineers said that the Twin Towers were built to withstand the impact from a passenger jet. And like the Titanic their gone why. Like the Titanic they figured under normal conditions they should be OK. Like Titanic it wasn't designed for the damage it took due to the fire, as the Tower's indeed survived the initial hit just like they were designed to do.
Where do you come up with only two comparts flooding in a head on collision? I would think the sheer force of the shockwave would ripple the hull and pop off all kinds of rivets....
Keep up the great stuff
I would love to see a video of Queen Mary 2 from this channel....
Pls do one on it 🙏🙏🙏
A navy captain I knew said had Murdock gone full speed ahead, even with the turn to port (Hard a starboard means to turn to port (left), they would have cleared the berg. Reversing the engines cavitated the rudder, creating a flood of bubbles around it, meaning the rudder had no water into which to dig. But think about the moments Murdock needed to make the decision. Would Captain Smith have made the same decision?
But it’s not proven that Murdoch ordered the engines reversed. From what I understand historians have agreed that there was no order to reverse them. He may have called full astern and it is fair to say if he had just called hard-a-starboard the momentum of the ship would have allowed him to clear the berg.
I love your channel
Where do you get all the information? I liked the video☺
So how are binoculars going to help at night... This is utter nonsense.
Jamie Ross The lookouts saw the iceberg so it really mattered if they had binoculars.
Another documentary stated that binoculars were useful for inspection, not detection of an object and the lookout would have only used them to get a better look at something they already saw.
So they can call the safer team earlier
I'm a seafarer have been in situations countless times where there's no light coming from the moon. We manage to avoid fishing vessels and other huge floating objects because of those binoculars even though it's pitch black because our eyes eventually get used to the night after a while standing watch.
There are night glasses for use st night and were used by North of skittertland Orkney and Shetland steam navigation company
I am going to buy a binoculars now😬😬

It's easy to play "Monday Morning Quarterback" and wonder why there wasn't a backup set of keys - and a regulation to use them, or why not a light shone ahead to see that the way was clear, not to mention the lifeboat thing. But no matter how much effort you put into it, something is always going to happen. But rather than be fatalistic about it, just think of all the little "coincidences" that kept something like the sinking of the Titanic from happening, and therefore from our ever knowing about them. Let's hope your life is filled with enough of those to keep you safe and happy.

WildL23 okay you are big brain (500 iq)
9:20 that's funny, with so much commitment they carried on playing. Respect.
A couple things I see wrong with this. 1) Binoculars are only for confirming what do you see at a distance after you spot it in your regular field of view. 2) Simply ramming the iceberg would have crumpled the ship only up to the first two watertight compartments only yes, but it would have also warped Titanic's superstructure and prevented the watertight doors from closing. Without the ability to close the watertight doors the ship would have flooded even more rapidly and sank sooner.
First Officer Murdock did nothing wrong.

Um I'm sorry to disappoint you but even if the cabinet was unlocked they would still be useless because it was pitch black but still if the captain just let the front of the ship hit the iceberg it would be fine. The crash would only destroy 2 compartments but since the captain turned the iceberg scraped 6 compartments thus making it fill up with water a sinking. Honestly I don't know why I wrote this its not like anyone will read this or even care but I already typed this and spent like one hour doing so. Welp this was pointless
i care and read the whole thing, i respect you for this
I watched Titanic for the first time yesterday!!! Are Rose and Jack real people?
No. They are fictional characters. James Cameron only added them to the story for an emotional effect. I think the actual story was emotional enough.
@@eshnz506 Oh ok! Thank u
From t he "titianic movie" Wikipedia page:
After filming the underwater shots, Cameron began writing the screenplay.[49] He wanted to honor the people who died during the sinking, so he spent six months researching all of the Titanic's crew and passengers.[45] "I read everything I could. I created an extremely detailed timeline of the ship's few days and a very detailed timeline of the last night of its life," he said.[47] "And I worked within that to write the script, and I got some historical experts to analyze what I'd written and comment on it, and I adjusted it."[47] He paid meticulous attention to detail, even including a scene depicting the Californian's role in Titanic's demise, though this was later cut (see below). From the beginning of the shoot, they had "a very clear picture" of what happened on the ship that night. "I had a library that filled one whole wall of my writing office with Titanic stuff, because I wanted it to be right, especially if we were going to dive to the ship," he said. "That set the bar higher in a way - it elevated the movie in a sense. We wanted this to be a definitive visualization of this moment in history as if you'd gone back in a time machine and shot it."[47]

Crazy! I hope that ships today have binoculars attached to the lookout stations now.
I think it might have changed history. But that is only if someone happened to use the binoculars in time. Someone would have been looking through them without a break. Who would do that. And they had way too much confidence in the ship.
Yes it would have made a difference someone locked them up and he felt guilty about not being able to see the ice breg he felt he was responsible
All lookout people need binoculars.
It would have never made a difference... The air was cold and chilly and the night was one without a moon - The burg wouldnt have been visible with the binoculars anyway plus the iceburg had recently flipped over making it blue and not white like a normal burg - Harder to see
No the Key's to the Binocular locker wasn't important at all in fact the keys not being on board Guaranteed that the look outs didn't have tunnel vision when looking for Icebergs. in fact the another factor that has been resently discovered is that a due to the strange weather that night that the horizon was visibly higher which hid the Iceberg till in was closer. However the thing about ramming the iceberg is true in fact the Titanic could of steamed into New York had it rammed the iceberg however it would have been been late and they were under orders from Ismay and Smith to keep time and Show up a Day Earlier due to the great time they were making in the voyage.
Can u make it a little shorter .not to be rude. Id get it
Dallen: Better to be late than not at all
Did you know that commas exist?
Not to mention that if Titanic had steamed on to New York nobody would have ever known that trying to dodge the iceberg would have resulted in catastrophic loss of life, meaning that the guy who made the decision to ram the iceberg would have had to explain to some very angry White Star Line executives why he let their brand new ship get pranged when it was his job to make sure it didn't hit icebergs. I think most people would have made the same call to dry dodging it under the circumstances.
