If you want to add that white pencil over your already set pencils, spray your art with workable fixative. You can go over it because you are drawing over the fixative.

oh yes, I feel you there. We have only recently been able to get the brush and pencil products here in Australia.. and while I do love them, there are definitely ways to get the same effects without it. Good luck!
Hi! I can't not get the Brush and Pencils touch of texture or a textured fixative! I understand you completely! I live in Puerto Rico, a Territory of the US...and I don't know why I can't get them! If you like... there's a product call Liquid white colored pencils from Pearl Barnish, you get it on Etsy...if you want it. That's what I had to do.🤷🏻♀️

I can buy the titanium white, and powder blender, but I can't buy the touch of texture and textured fixative spray! Because they have a warning about the hazard and flammable issues, I contact customer service from Blick, and they told me, it was USPS restrictions.... 🤷🏻♀️

The Luminance white pencil is probably the most opaque. As for using the white Polychromos, you can blend with it and you can also use it to knock back brighter colours in order to better show perspective.

When you had the Prismacolor crumbs on the paper, I found myself leaning toward my monitor, lips pursed to blow them away. I only realized what I was doing and stopped myself as you blew them away yourself! ;-D
Great video - I will buy both as I think both the polychromos and the prisma have their uses. The softer edged lines of the 2nd one would look more natural when trying to bring out the veins of a leaf.

I love the Poly pencils as well as the Prismacolors. They do things deferently, not necessarily better. I get a better blend with the prismas than the Polys. I believe this is do to the wax content. (Blending with a solution that is). Also you need to sharpen Prisma pencils with a good school type sharpener (Screw blade type). The soft wax does not do well with a straight blade (Unless you're sharpening by hand going from back to front. Also!!!! Big for me, because of the bad rap on the Presmas, I can find good deals on these. So yes, the Polys are very very good, but don't think the Prismas are bad, because I love them and use the Prismas almost exclusively if I know I'll be using a solvent blender. And indeed, work with what is best for you guys.
I have a pencil sharpener that screws and it sharpens all my pencils very well. It's adjustable and I am able to get a fine point or a shorter, stubbier point. The only pencils that get mangled are my Prismacolors. The sharpener has an autostop feature that does not work with the Prismas so I have to check it every few turns until I reach the desired length. The leads look chewed up sometimes and I'm tempted to use sandpaper to sharpen them cleaner. If Prismas weren't so cheap and available open stock I'd have to use another brand for fun coloring. Thanks for sharing your tips.
@@1Letter23Numbers. Yeah, when I use the screw type sharpener, I'm very slow with the lowering of the prisma. The sharpener spins fast and I use 2 hands to insert it very slowly. I also use sandpaper for the final part of the sharpening. Sounds like a process but not that bad really. All the best to you.

What about blotting the lines after applying each layer of thinner, seems like that would help? I am a big fan of the Poly Chromosome but I find that the Prismacolor white works better. Your tutorial is new info to me and I will try.
Yes, in many ways the white prismacolor works better as a white pencil. unfortunately I have found if I put it on the first layers though, it spreads out and causes a milky/cloudiness to my colours that i really dont like. I have found that using polychromos white to protect my highlights first, then using my white prismacolor in the final layer for highlights works the best for me
I have both brands as well and I find this exercise makes sense. The Prismas have slightly more blendability and the Polychromos white seemed to dig a bit deeper into this paper and doesn't blend quite as easily ....
Great info about using the white polychromos and other techniques to preserve the white of the paper. One thing I wanted to note - that is not a fountain pen. It's a dip pen. Fountain pens have internal ink reservoirs.

Thankyou very much! no I haven't tried the powder blender yet :( unfortunately Australia has very strict customs rules... awesome for protecting our flora and fauna, terrible for allowing fun new art products onto our shelves. We are still waiting for a way to ship the textured fixative into the country and the powder blender is pretty much useless without it :( I will be ordering some to play with the minute it is allowed in!!!

I think that both Primacolors and the Polychromos are both excellent products. However, were each one seems to fail in a certain area. It just means that you need to find a solution that works for particular pencil. I mean like the wax of the Primacolor would work well doing portrait work on water color or a paper with some tooth. Where as the Polychromos would work well with doing animal paintings. The paper would be similar except, as you have shown here. Pastel paper can work well with the Polychromos. I hope I made a tiny bit of sense. I'm new at this after all. Lol
I find that the prismacolor white blends well and in my opinion, prismas blend better because they're wax based pencil, unlike polychromos with are oil based.
I have 2 NEEF brand, Taklon bristle, oval brushes that I use for colour pencil a large one 3/8 and a smaller one that I think is 3/16 but the writing has long worn off!! Just look for the white soft bristles with a bit of a rounded tip and it should serve you well for many years!!
Thanks so much Cassandra for this super video:) I only just started using PastelMat for the first time so like Mi -Teints it has a rough sandy surface and I discovered that I could use my white Polychromos over the darker areas. It is so different from working on a smooth paper. Since buying an X-Acto electric sharpener not a single one of my Prismacolor pencils has broken. Do you like the Mi-Teints? I've heard it is very thin which is why I got the PastelMat
I have very much enjoyed working on the mi-tients tex (branded "touch" outside australia) so far.. but i havent really tried out any other kinds of sanded paper yet. Canson does make a thinner mi-tients pastel paper (160gsm, or 108lbs) which is kind of like a textured coloured card.. but the the Mi-tients sanded paper is pretty thick (350gsm , 236lbs) the pastelmat is a little thicker at 360gsm, 246lbs. I have heard people remark they have different tooth patterns, so I am curious. The results were so different to regular paper, that i really want to try out some more texured surfaces, I feel another trip to the art shop is in order!! (did i just hear my wallet cry out??? lol!) I usually dont have too much issue with breaking prismas. while they certainly break more than the polychromos, breakages are usually pretty mimimal ... I think this pencil just wanted to show off on camera!!
So what do you you use to add highlights after you drawn and coloured your drawing? Or how do I just draw white on top for say, a white line or white circle without preplanning, what the best pencil or type of pencil for just laying on atop a pure white on top of your drawing (after it was coloured) I've heard maybe to use a wax based, or oil pencil that will basically leave the pigment behind and on top. As fart as I know for the prisma colour which demonstrated perfectly was how well it blends together to create whole new colours, allowing you to get a away with 12 or 24 pencils and having literally 1000's of colours available just like mixing paint. That was shown pretty well with the white, as you drew black on it. So you could work with the black and white pencil and be able to create a wonderful grayscale image. anyway was wondering what type of white pencil would be best for me to lay down some great pure white lines (without have to pre-empt the lines before you start drawing)
so far i have found the prismacolor to be the best for laying down over coloured areas the luminance pencil works about the same but for a much higher price.... however it really doesn't turn out pure white without a little planning an advance :( I do like the idea of a greyscale image though.. it might need a little practice, but that could turn out very nicely.

You're a good teacher (🍐🥭 🌹). I've heard tell that the Caran D'Ache Luminence white pencil is good and unlike the Brush and Pencil products is available to you in Australia.
I am relatively new to color pencils. I am using Polychromos and Luminance. On RUclips, I notice artists use Polychromos way more than luminance. What is your take on why?
Well, if I had to choose a personal preference, I would use my polychromos over the luminance pencils any day... I own both, and they are both wonderful, but I find the polychromos to be more versatile. (Personal preference only) I also think the polychromos are probably more affordable and more easily accessible world wide probably really helps skew the percentage of artists that lean towards using the polychromos? It’s a bit tricky as this is one of this things that really boils down to personal preference, but I think that it probably boils down to availability and versatility

Yes, I did use odourless mineral spirits. I probably use “thinner” as a description because I also use it to thin my oil paint.. my bad, sorry And yes, I’m On the Sunshine Coast! Good to hear from Another Aussie :)
Yes! Absolutely. You just have to have more patience to build up more layers the old fashioned way. It helps to have a very sharp pencil tip to do this

I have heard it is good! Unfortunately it is not something I often see in physical stores where I am (which is strange because Derwent is kind of the #1 pencil brand available in Australia??? I’ll have to give it a try some time
Well, I think I’m some places then yes, you might be able to get away with a very light yellow, but if you want a really bright highlight on something, you may be better off leaving the area blank and letting the white if the paper do the work for you. It’s a bit tricky to work around an area like that, but sometimes you really need that pop of white!

+zapole yeah, it should work. I have tried this with Derwent artists and some cheap monte marte pencils and it worked pretty well. The only ones I've really found not to work very well are the super soft waxy ones like prismacolor or luminance because their white just kind of spreads and mixes instead of leaving nice clean lines
It was awhile ago, but it would have been Either sand coloured canson mi teients tex (or touch depending on your location) paper... or a colourfix sheet
What are the colored pencil makers waiting on about making a white colored pencil that will actually go over darker colors? Surely there must be some kind of formulation that can do it.
+ANTHONY J MARTINEZ canson makes a couple of papers called mi-tients... this one is their sanded paper line which is called "tex" here in Australia, but it's also called "touch" elsewhere in the world. I picked it up at my local art shop, and it comes in larger and smaller sheets.

I tried using my white Polychromos as a blender over light colors just today! *looks at time* Er, I mean yesterday. It worked pretty well, though it did lighten the color slightly. However, I think I like it better than my Lyra Splender, at least for light colors.
It's canson mi tients tex paper (or sometimes called mi Tients touch ) it's a sanded paper that is usually used for pastels, but can be used with colour pencils too! (I have a video where I use it and the ampersand pastel board with my pencils ruclips.net/video/gorg4iYwUU8/видео.html

You didnt even try with the prismacolor, in where you actually had to fast forward perfecting the polychromos.... plus you just made the lines wider and didnt sharpen your pencil well..... anyone who actually breaks a prismacolor the first time trying to sharpen it shouldnt be making a comparison video.... i use both, like poly more, but the prisma white is the better pencil....

Now I love the prismacolor white for different techniques... it's more opaque and better for the final layers.. but for the resist technique and to make fine white lines, I would choose the polychromos.. it's not about which one is "better" because they are best used in very different ways.

Unfortunately I have not yet had a chance to play with the Caran D'Ache pencils :( But they are most certainly on my wish list!

I use several brands of white and some of white colours keep them with blending and burnishing kit.

It just means that you need to find a solution that works for particular pencil. I mean like the wax of the Primacolor would work well doing portrait work on water color or a paper with some tooth. Where as the Polychromos would work well with doing animal paintings. The paper would be similar except, as you have shown here. Pastel paper can work well with the Polychromos. I hope I made a tiny bit of sense. I'm new at this after all. Lol
Good idea, but what if you etched with the pen (or other item) then put the white pencil in the 'grooves'?

I find that the prismacolor white blends well and in my opinion, prismas blend better because they're wax based pencil, unlike polychromos with are oil based.
Have you tried the Derwent China white or the Luminance 6901 white? They’re both quite opaque.

I have 2 NEEF brand, Taklon bristle, oval brushes that I use for colour pencil a large one 3/8 and a smaller one that I think is 3/16 but the writing has long worn off!! Just look for the white soft bristles with a bit of a rounded tip and it should serve you well for many years!!
Thanks so much Cassandra for this super video:) I only just started using PastelMat for the first time so like Mi -Teints it has a rough sandy surface and I discovered that I could use my white Polychromos over the darker areas. It is so different from working on a smooth paper. Since buying an X-Acto electric sharpener not a single one of my Prismacolor pencils has broken. Do you like the Mi-Teints? I've heard it is very thin which is why I got the PastelMat
I have very much enjoyed working on the mi-tients tex (branded "touch" outside australia) so far.. but i havent really tried out any other kinds of sanded paper yet.
Canson does make a thinner mi-tients pastel paper (160gsm, or 108lbs) which is kind of like a textured coloured card.. but the the Mi-tients sanded paper is pretty thick (350gsm , 236lbs) the pastelmat is a little thicker at 360gsm, 246lbs. I have heard people remark they have different tooth patterns, so I am curious. The results were so different to regular paper, that i really want to try out some more texured surfaces, I feel another trip to the art shop is in order!! (did i just hear my wallet cry out??? lol!)
I usually dont have too much issue with breaking prismas. while they certainly break more than the polychromos, breakages are usually pretty mimimal ... I think this pencil just wanted to show off on camera!!

So what do you you use to add highlights after you drawn and coloured your drawing? Or how do I just draw white on top for say, a white line or white circle without preplanning, what the best pencil or type of pencil for just laying on atop a pure white on top of your drawing (after it was coloured)
I've heard maybe to use a wax based, or oil pencil that will basically leave the pigment behind and on top.
As fart as I know for the prisma colour which demonstrated perfectly was how well it blends together to create whole new colours, allowing you to get a away with 12 or 24 pencils and having literally 1000's of colours available just like mixing paint. That was shown pretty well with the white, as you drew black on it. So you could work with the black and white pencil and be able to create a wonderful grayscale image.
anyway was wondering what type of white pencil would be best for me to lay down some great pure white lines (without have to pre-empt the lines before you start drawing)
so far i have found the prismacolor to be the best for laying down over coloured areas the luminance pencil works about the same but for a much higher price.... however it really doesn't turn out pure white without a little planning an advance :( I do like the idea of a greyscale image though.. it might need a little practice, but that could turn out very nicely.

I am relatively new to color pencils. I am using Polychromos and Luminance. On RUclips, I notice artists use Polychromos way more than luminance. What is your take on why?
Well, if I had to choose a personal preference, I would use my polychromos over the luminance pencils any day... I own both, and they are both wonderful, but I find the polychromos to be more versatile. (Personal preference only)
I also think the polychromos are probably more affordable and more easily accessible world wide probably really helps skew the percentage of artists that lean towards using the polychromos?
It’s a bit tricky as this is one of this things that really boils down to personal preference, but I think that it probably boils down to availability and versatility

Yes, I did use odourless mineral spirits. I probably use “thinner” as a description because I also use it to thin my oil paint.. my bad, sorry

Yes! Absolutely. You just have to have more patience to build up more layers the old fashioned way. It helps to have a very sharp pencil tip to do this

I use odourless mineral spirits, (which you would usually find in the oil painting section of the art shop) but zest it would certainly work!

You should try the Derwent drawing Chinese white it's the best I've seen cost about 2.36 US dollars but worth every penny
I have heard it is good! Unfortunately it is not something I often see in physical stores where I am (which is strange because Derwent is kind of the #1 pencil brand available in Australia??? I’ll have to give it a try some time
I have Crayola color pencils, they do not come with white, but I do have a very lite yellow will that do?
Well, I think I’m some places then yes, you might be able to get away with a very light yellow, but if you want a really bright highlight on something, you may be better off leaving the area blank and letting the white if the paper do the work for you. It’s a bit tricky to work around an area like that, but sometimes you really need that pop of white!

+zapole yeah, it should work. I have tried this with Derwent artists and some cheap monte marte pencils and it worked pretty well. The only ones I've really found not to work very well are the super soft waxy ones like prismacolor or luminance because their white just kind of spreads and mixes instead of leaving nice clean lines

+ANTHONY J MARTINEZ canson makes a couple of papers called mi-tients... this one is their sanded paper line which is called "tex" here in Australia, but it's also called "touch" elsewhere in the world. I picked it up at my local art shop, and it comes in larger and smaller sheets.

I tried using my white Polychromos as a blender over light colors just today! *looks at time* Er, I mean yesterday. It worked pretty well, though it did lighten the color slightly. However, I think I like it better than my Lyra Splender, at least for light colors.

i ordered these pencils "polychromos". i found the white pencil can be somewhat opaque over dark acrylic paint.

Wow.... such bias.... You didnt even try with the prismacolor, in where you actually had to fast forward perfecting the polychromos.... plus you just made the lines wider and didnt sharpen your pencil well..... anyone who actually breaks a prismacolor the first time trying to sharpen it shouldnt be making a comparison video.... i use both, like poly more, but the prisma white is the better pencil....
+KonTro113d KhaOZ to be fair it's not really a comparison video! ...it is how I use the polychromos white! Now I love the prismacolor white for different techniques... it's more opaque and better for the final layers.. but for the resist technique and to make fine white lines, I would choose the polychromos.. it's not about which one is "better" because they are best used in very different ways.
